[Q] Google account sync error - "Sync is currently experiencing problems..."
Hi guys,
I'm having issues with my Google account sync.
Google Play Music is causing my account to have a sync error.
I get the error message:
Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly.
Click to collapse
And there is a sync icon with an exclamation point (!) by Google Play Music, when I press into my Google Account in Settings.
It's been like this for a few days now and I feel it's affecting my battery life, as the failed sync re-tries again and again.
Some forums have suggested disabling 2-step verification, removing the Google account and then adding it back, clearing app cache, etc.
I've done it all with no success.
For what it's worth, if I un-check the Google Play Music sync box and run the "Sync Now," sync all, their are no errors and the UI shows a successful sync icon.
I'm not sure what's going on here.
Thanks,
-Donnie

Try removing your Google account and then add it back. That sometimes fixes it.

I just came across your post from a Google search and thought I would post my solution. This literally happened to me today out of nowhere(never had a problem before) and it totally stumped and frustrated me to no end. I tried cache reset, factory reset, all that bulls**t and it didn't work.
This is how I finally got sync to work:
>>login into your Google account from a web browser eg: google.com, play.google.com, wherever
>>in the upper right corner go to where it shows your profile info, click on your picture, and click Account
>>on the next screen click Security
>>where it says Account Permissions click View All
>>you have 2 choices: you can revoke access on everything you see or just extra devices. Personally, I had 4 Droid DNA's and 4 Nexus 7's listed from where I've done factory resets or ROM installs and I had to reauthorize my Google account. All I did was revoke access for the ones that said "no activity in the past 60 days". Within seconds Google Play was already auto-updating apps on my phone, I couldn't believe it.
This may not work for you but it's how I got it to work. Good luck.
Google looks to be having issues today so I would bet that's the problem

I was happy with the NF, and added all the gApps after installing it. It worked fine. However the contact.apk was missing, so I reinstalled NF using CWR.
After that the contacts was back but since then I can't add google account after gApps are added. The "can't establish a reliable data connection to the server" error showed up every time.
I tried to reinstall NF, back to stock 1.0.1 and NF again, changing the time, delete settings.db, or even the YouTube trick. All of them don't work.
Any suggestions to solve it?
*update*: Youtube trick worked:
1. Go to youtube.com and sign up for a new account, using the email address you want to add to your phone
2. Open the YouTube application on your Adroid phone, sign out of your account if you're currently signed in (menu button -> sign out)
3. Sign in-menu button-my account, log in with your EMAIL ADDRESS (not your YouTube username)
4. Now You're all done - you can sign out of the account in the YouTube app again if desired. Go to Settings-Accounts and you should see your account in the list.

Market is not working anyway...
Getting the same error after installing Nookie Froyo v0.6.7 to SD, and adding the Gapps (per the nookdevs.com wiki), try to add account/Google results in "can't establish a reliable data connection to the server"
I can surf web, use the Facebook and Youtube apps.
Google's Blunder
Search google for can't establish reliable data connection change the options to 'latest' and it looks like this one's on google. I just flashed my firmware for my elocity a7 and got the same error all last night and this morning when trying to sync my google account. Hold fast, daylight will break soon. . .
update:
The YouTube worked when I try to add "@gmail.com" after my username.
However, the Market gives me a "A Server error has occurred. Retry, or cancel and return to the previous screen." error message and I can't get in. Contacts and Gmail is now working though.
Im having the same issue.
Picked up my Nook Color yesturday evening, I've booted Honeycomb off the SD card and then used HoneyGApps.v2 to install Market and a bunch of other apps.
However I get the following error when attempting to add my Google Account:
"Cannot Establish a Reliable Data Connection"
Tried a few things like clearing app cache and rebooting but I can get around this issue.
Anyone have any ideas for what I could try? Im connected to a strong wifi connection so its not a connectivity issue, I can browse the net no problem.
Signing into Youtube with your gmail account username/password gets you logged in, but it looks like a Google network server is down now, so still no Market access
It's Google's problem after all?
I used a WHOLE DAY trying to fix it...(censored)
you sure it's Google's server down?

I opened the Youtube app and tried to sign in.
Even though I haven't "setup" a youtube account before... I used my Gmail address I was trying to add to my Nook. Youtube signed me in.
I went back to Settings -> accounts -> Accounts & Sync.. it gave me a black screen that was there for about 20 seconds. Then I got the "add account" screen with my GOOGLE account listed. When I opened it, it had nothing listed. Then, Calendar showed up. As I sat there, Picassa Web Albums, contacts and Gmail later appeared and started synching.
The sync of those items took about 20 minutes. (I did uncheck picassa).
Trying to open Market, I now get "a service error has occured" so I tried...
Code:
Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> All -> Market
Clear Cache then Force Stop -- DO NOT clear data
Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> All -> Google Services Framework
Clear data then Force Stop
Reboot
It didn't help.
Also, I notice my browser seems a little slow, and while the facebook app runs, it takes a bit to load up... And when I launch the Gmail app, it shows about have the screen worth of mail, but I see the "loading conversations" at the bottom of the screen for about 5 or more seconds
I just turned my Nook on this morning to find that I can now add my Google account and open the Market. (Morning being 7.50am UK Time).
Must have been a glitch or a few reboots required....
@dhumpherson, what issue did you have previously with adding your account? Was it after you click ont he android robot (right at first screen) and attempt to enter your gmail account? That is where i cannot have success. I did enter into gmail before rooting, and i've read that may be an issue and i need to get rid of the data saved from that login, but i haven't located instructions yet for that.
If you had been unable to login at that initial screen but found an answer please let me know what you did. *If i enter an incorrect password the continue interface will tell me this, so it knows i'm entering the correct one when i do, but it just returns me to the login page, after the display blinks.
I'm on MoDaCo r12, and it has worked flawlessly thus far.
All of the sudden Google Talk started telling "Google Talk authentication error", and it keeps playing the notification sound at random and sometimes very often. Additionally Gmail has stopped synchronizing without any notice. Not a single error message!
I have never seen this strangeness in the two years of messing around with Android. Settings -> Accounts and sync sometimes tells me that "Sync is having problems and will be back shortly", but mostly it just doesn't work without telling me about any errors.
The log shows lines like these:
Code:
W/DefaultRequestDirector( 1373): Authentication error: Unable to respond to any of these challenges: {}
Sometimes there will be methods listed in the curly braces, but mostly not.
Code:
W/DefaultRequestDirector( 1406): Authentication error: Unable to respond to any of these challenges: {googlelogin=WWW-Authenticate: GoogleLogin realm="http://www.google.com/accounts/ClientLogin", service=""}
I have tried wiping /cache, re-flashing the ROM image, clearing data in any apps I think might be related to Google services. E.g. Google services framework, accounts, account and sync settings, Talk, Gmail, Market...
I have even tried changing the Google account password twice. The phone notices it and accepts my new password like it normally would, but the issue remains.
This is a @gmail.com account. I have a Google Apps account on my phone also, and that one works fine.
Does anyone have any ideas? I'm about to wipe everything and start fresh, but first I would like to know if anyone has any killer tips on to get rid of this. I'm thinking there might be a cached cookie/auth token or something somewhere that's causing this.

That's not it I'm afraid. Using ClockSync, so it was only off by about one second after a reboot just now. I tried fix permissions in despair, but to no avail.
As noted above, my Google Apps account works fine, it's just my gmail.com account that doesn't work. Somehow it seems that Contacts and Calendar are sync'ed. Meaning the time and date of last sync on those are a few minutes ago, but Picasa is dated two days ago, Gmail yesterday.
I checked it on my Nexus One too; it pops up the password prompt (because I changed my pass) and then goes on to synchronize everything perfectly fine. Wtf could cause this! I haven't really done anything but read Twitter, Facebook and some RSS via Pulse before it stopped working. I only updated a couple of apps that is not related in any way and have not changed any system settings.
Fcuk it, I wiped it all and restored apps with titanium backup. All good now.
Hi, i to have a problem with Google account sign in but its with Play store, every time i try to use Play store it asks me to ether use an existing Google account or make a new account even though i have a Google account set up on my phone. So my question is how can i get back on to Play store with my Google account? Tried by removing my account from my phone then going on to Play Store and signed in with my account but when i tried going back to Play store again it asked me to ether make a new account or use an existing account.
I guess its becoz in some parts of the world youtube services has been shutdown and it as affected google services communication badly. I live in pakistan and here we cant access to google play and other google services as well.

Once had the same problem and until I realized I had an error with my baseband, I pulled out a lot of my sparse hair.
Make a good backup and try to flash new bb, then Google will recognize you again (I hope!!!!)

Hi:
I just updated to 4.2 and now can't download from the playstore. There are updates available but whenever I try, I get the following error:
Update for xxx could not be downloaded due to an error. Error retrieving information from server. [RPC:S-5:AEC-0])
Pretty fundamental problem. Any ideas?
Tom
I have the same exact problem.

same here!
Me too. Already cleared cache and data of the play store app.
I've tried clearing cache and data from the Google Play Store in Apps as well as a force stop but no luck. I did the same with Google Play Services but still no luck. I've seen websites that recommend deleting your account and then adding it back in but I don't know if it's a good idea with the N7
Tom
I can confirm that deleting your Google account and re-adding it solves the problem.

Worked for me too. No reboot necessary.
That commonly happens for stopping and clearing data of Google Framework services. Also break Push Notifications in some cases.
Fixes:
1. Clear data and cache of Play Store or
2. Remove and re add Google account and worst scenario
3. Factory Reset

no re-install needed.
when you remove your Google account it warns you will "remove contacts, messages, and other data from the phone", but it is not as bad as it sounds because it is NOT your personal data, files, pics, vids, etc it is ONLY the Google synced data like contacts, messages, etc that YOU WILL get back when you re-add the Google account and re-sync.
TL;DR removing your Google sync account and re-adding it results in NOTHING lost and fixed the problem for me

I've had this issue numerous times with the play store not just on 4.2 update, a good set of steps to follow to recover from this and most other store and sync issues:
1. Tap Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications
2. Go to "All"
3. Scroll down to 'Google Play Store', 'Google Services Framework' and 'Google Play Services' and complete the following three steps for each:
Click on 'Force Close'
Click on 'Clear Data'
Click on 'Uninstall Updates'
4. Go into your Google account and disable all the sync options so nothing is ticked.
5. Reboot your device now, do not run any of the applications.
6. Re-enable all your sync options under your Google account
7. Re-Boot again, now you can go and try the Play store and let everything sync back up, should all be 'hey ho pip and dandy'.
I know deleting your account and re-enabling solves it, but I think it's always helpful to have different ideas and options
Hi,
I was doing a favour for someone who asked me to root their Kindle and install the Play Store.
I did this and I tested it with my own gmail account and everything is working perfect. However, now I want to give them back their tablet, but I can't see where I can remove my account/logout from the Play Store. Obviously, giving them back the tablet with my account logged in is out of the question.
I tried going into Applications and clearing the app's data. I also tried wiping the data in Titanium Backup. Neither worked.
Can anyone help me here?
Thanks.
Do you have 2-Step Verification enabled in your Gmail account? You could try revoking access to the device from your account management page I think.
No, I don't have 2 step verification.
Would it be worth my time to enable it just so this persons Play Store won't log me in? Surely there must be a way I can remove the Play Store, reinstall it, and let them log in?
When I was installing it initially, the steps told me to log in, and then continue with further steps where it upgrades the Play Store to the latest version and does some other stuff. If I could delay those steps, or put them into a shell script to be run from the terminal once this person logged in, then I suppose that would be good too.
Thanks.
Had this problem on a cheap tablet that I got play store on for a friend, add another account (theirs) then you can remove yours

Hi,
Thanks but that doesnt work either. The problem is that the actual "Accounts and Sync" menu isnt in the settings. The only indication I have of my account is in the Play Store app, when you go into Menu and Accounts. Its related to the locked down version of the Kindle OS I think.
It looks like I might have to wipe the whole tablet and put on a custom ROM.
Actually. I think I figured out a way of doing this.
I had my gmail account setup to use the Play Store, and had Gmail synced apparently. Then I added a second account but I hadnt opened the Gmail app yet. When I did, it asked me to setup sync for my second account since it was the first time I'd opened Gmail since I added the 2nd one. This gives a link to the default Android "Accounts & Sync" menu, in the form of a button at the bottom of the app.
I was able to go in there and delete my 2 accounts. So it seems we can get into the Accounts menu through a back door in Gmail!
PS, I tried it again to add the 2 accounts and make sure I could reproduce it, but it just went to my Gmail inbox and showed me my emails for my first account. Then I pressed the drop down menu up the top left of the app and it showed my 2 inboxes. I clicked the 2nd one and it then gave me the sync menu buttons again and I could reproduce it, ie delete both my accounts.
Now if only I could get the menu/nav bar to stay on when I don't unlock it straight away after a reboot, then I'd be done!
How did you you added a second account?
Hi, I'm exactly in this same situation.

Possible fix
When I downloaded Google Play onto my fire 10 HD I downloaded 4 apk (Google services framework, Google play services, Google account manager and Google play store)
Once I'd done that I mistakenly logged into Play on the wrong account.
When I went back to the home screen there was a 'Google setting' app icon there.
I tapped that icon and went to 'Google Account - info, security & personalisation', from there if you tap the small arrow at the end of the email address it gives you the option to use another account.
I added the other account and am now able to switch between email accounts.
Hope that helps.

This is quite easy and a two-minute task:
Open Plyastore on your PC/Laptop
Sign in to the play store using the same Gmail ID you want to remove from any device.
Once signed in Navigate to the setting by clicking on the Gear icon on the upper right corner of the screen.
Here you will find all the devices connected to your account.
Simply click and remove the device.
This will help you to remove the device or logout of the play store remotely.
This is the easiest and most effective way.
As @eoinzy & @Chotkach mentioned (Thank you)
1. Install Gmail app (Don't question it. Just do it)
Go to setting.
Manage account and here you can easily remove Play Store information.
I can't seem to sign in to google chrome using my account. My bookmarks and etc. were showing but every time I try to sign it I get the message 'this account already exists on the phone' and my history wouldn't sync. So, I removed my google account and signed it back into my phone.
The google account signed in on my chrome app then it just went back by itself, now I've tried to log in again and it says the same message now with no bookmarks syncing either.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled the app updates too, not sure what to do from here.
Anybody have any ideas?
same here. deleting the google account or uninstalling chrome does not help.

This happened to me when I changed my Google password while still logged in on my phone. I backed up via Huawei desktop software and factory reset my phone through recovery and it's all good now. Nothing else seemed to fix it.

Finally managed to fix it! I made sure the app had all the permissions set then I uninstalled all the updates again, this time I signed in first and it ended up working as normal then I just updated the app again and it worked perfectly. Not sure if the apps permission effected it but definitely try uninstalling the updates then signing in first before updating again.
