[Q] What tool for flashing Recovery on KitKat? - Verizon LG G2

I would like to know what app, tool, or method people are using to flash recovery (particularly CWM or CWM touch) on KitKat ROMs these days (whether they be stock 24a, CM11, or anything KitKat). I used to swear by FreeGee back in the 12b days, but of course it's not KitKat compatible. I know of Flashify but I've seen very mixed reviews on that over time. Any recommendations?

Autorec will do TWRP for you, not sure if there is a one click tool for CWM. You may need to do the aboot downgrade and flash it via adb or use Autorec to do the downgrade and install TWRP then flash your recovery of choice via adb.
Autorec automatically does steps 5-8 for you - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2702958

I had tried a few like Flashify, but they didn't work for me the first time. I ended up using AutoRec which was really simple and straight forward. Highly recommend AutoRec.

[Q] Can't just replace TWRP with Stock 12b Recovery?

Can someone point me to a thread that explains why someone on rooted stock 12b with TWRP can't simply flash a stock recovery to get the OTA? No one seems to be doing it, or even talking about doing it. Not knowing why is driving me crazy!! Thanks guys

Yup can do it as long as nothing else is modified but most people who root modify system, files. I did exactly what you're saying except a little different. I used flashify to back up stock recovery, then I flashed twrp and when kitkat came I restored to suck recovery uninstalled xposed framework and manually installed kitkat. Then I used Autorec to install twrp again and backed up recovery worth flashify first. This time though I forgot to backup the kernel too because Autorec modifies it. So now I'll probably have to kdz to stock uhh f a later update comes unless there's a flashible zip for it.

I found a repository here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48794341&postcount=4
When I renamed the 12b version from .bin to .img and flashed with Flashify, it factory reset my phone and even wiped internal storage. So I restored my nandroid (that I'd backed up externally), then flashed the 11a version. That installed on my 12b phone successfully.
The OTA then errors out with 0x1111004.
Upgrade Assistant tries but fails to detect the phone in ethernet mode.
In download mode the phone is detected but PC displays "Authentication fail"
I can't recall doing any mods outside of g2xposed and I've uninstalled the framework but maybe I did?
Was recovery was updated when 12b rolled out?
I'll try to dig up an earlier nandroid of my system partition and see if I can rule out other mods. Ideas welcome, thanks

[Q] Where's my recovery?

So I just recently decided to flash the unbloated OTA offered in the download section. I was on the 12 radio before running a regular ROM with ROM Manager and everything working perfectly. I flashed everything and all went smoothly. I flashed the OTA and the other required .zip. I then tried to root with IOroot25. Well my phone is detected, but when it goes to reboot into recovery, it never really does. So I tried to adb reboot recovery and the same thing happened - not going into recovery, just kinda' sitting at a very dark, though barely lit, screen.
Everything functions fine but it appears I do not have any sort of recovery at all. How would I go about fixing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
What debloated ROM did you flash?

It got removed, you need to downgrade the aboot to install a recovery once you upgrade the firmware to 24A. 24A plugs the exploit that was being used. Easiest route is to use the AutoRec app in the LG G2 Development section.

How can I use this program if I can't attain root? It says it requires root, which IOroot25 cannot do due to not having a recovery to boot into to apply the .zip.
I'm going to try the KDZ method here to flash the factory version in its full glory. Hopefully that will restore recovery mode and allow me to root the thing. I'll report back with my findings, and whether or not I was able to do this using the above link, IOroot, and AutoRec.
I am having the same issue. I was running CM11 on a verizon lg g2 with CWM recovery. I flashed prerooted 4.4.2 from MicroMod777 along with the KK baseband. It worked, but I lost root AND recovery. Now when I tried to use ioroot 25, my phone won't boot into recovery at all. It appears that I lost recovery. Is there a simple way to install recovery back?

Return your phone to stock, let it take the OTA then rroot and install recovery.

Running TWRP and am happy with that but would prefer CWM touch recovery. Have tried several methods to install from various XDA treads with no luck. Any info you know of on that?
CWM installed fine for me using their purchased app and just flashing the touch version after selecting my device model.
I have also installed it using .img files provided in the forums and using Flashify to flash them.

I was able to use .img files in the forums with 11a...I never took 12b...just stayed on 11a and ignored the update.
I returned to stock to get to 24a and was able to root but can't for the life of me get CWM recovery installed. I have tried flashify, installing zips, pushing .img with adb...no dice. I get error messages every time or the black screen you described in this thread's original post.
Just tried to load the zip from TWRP...no dice.
I purchased touch through the paid version of CWM and chose my device...nada...it's killing me!
I can live with TWRP but love CWM touch. Really at a loss.
Are you running 24a? If so, can you point me toward the forum link you used to get CWM loaded?

With 24a I pushed it with adb instead of flashing it via Flashify and it worked decently for me. Personally, though, I do like TWRP more, albeit it doesn't have that convenient application like CWM does.

So you took the OTA and you're on 24A now? If thats the case you need to push the 12B aboot first before you can flash recovery. AutoRec will do all that. And flash recovery for you. After its finished you can flash CWM touch if you want.

Have you ever seen this? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jmz.soft.twrpmanager It flashes recovery for you, you can manage backups, with a donation you can even make live backups while still booted in Android. I haven't tried it yet because I keep forgetting. Sounds so cool though.

Root, Backup & ROM Verizon LG G2 on 4.4.2???

I can't seem to find a process for backing up my current "stock" setup, then rooting it and installing TWRP and ROM's.
I had a G2 previous to it getting kitkat and had done all of this with that, fairly easily too...but can't seem to find the same process to do it after the kitkat update (4.4.2)...?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This worked to get twrp on it thanks! ks (i was able to eventually get it rooted using ioroot and did a nandroid backup), i am however not able to flash a new rom (using cm's latest nightly for the vs980 now...going to try the snapshot next, but the nightly just fails almost immediately and i did have twrp fix permissions????
thanks again!
EDIT: And crap, stuck in a boot loop...said it flashed the snapshot ok, almost immediately, rebooted and boot loop.

It's official, I'm bricked...lg logo boot loop, nothing else. Somehow in the process my nandroid and twrp backups no longer show up in twrp either (have to do the factory reset (hold down vol down and power twice, then power twice to confirm reset)...I've looked in the backup folders using twrp file manager and the folders have lots of stuff in them (not sure if it's correct stuff though?) and the folders are named as I named them when I did the backups...also, most other data seems to be on the phone and only 13gb's free according to twrp, so has to be a "system" there, but just get boot loop...
I've since read that the cm builds dont work on 24a kk 4.4.2 vs980; results in boot loops, but I can't get adb to work either so I can't even download a different rom to get it going...
I'm stuck...way stuck....

Did you use jackpotcalvin's cm11? If not then you're in a bootloop because the official cm11 for our phone users 4.2.2 kernel base, whereas jpc's uses kk kernel.
Can you get into download mode? If so, return to stock using kdz or tot method (I've used tot, fairly easy).

Recovery explanation needed

Alright everyone... I'm confused and getting more confused by the every thread I read. I'm going someone can offer clear advice and direction.
I'm very much used to flashing ROMs on Nexus devices. Unlock bootloader, flash recovery and away you go.
My current situation is this. I'm bootloader unlocked and have ressurection ROM installed. I was able to do this by flashing TWRP to BOOT. Then flashed the ROM. I now want to flash gapps, but can only get access to CM Recovery. Which doesn't allow zips.
His can I get a normal recovery scenario?
I think the easiest option is this:
Put two flashable zips on your phone, a zip containing the kernel for your current ROM and a zip containing a flashable TWRP recovery.
Fastboot any kernel which has TWRP, enter recovery and FIRST flash the kernel from your ROM and then without leaving recovery flash the TWRP zip. This should give you access to TWRP. Note that you might have to wait for a second vibration when booting since sometimes it will first check for the CM recovery and then the TWRP recovery.
Another option is to use an ADB based installer for recovery. I assume NUT's XZdualrecovery also works on CM based roms. Download the installer zip and with USB debugging enabled install NUT's dual recovery.
Hope this helps

Hey, thanks for the reply.
I finally flashed dual recovery again and realized that you do in fact need to wait for the second vibration. So I now can get access to TWRP.
But, again, thanks.

Haha, I've spend so many hours on my old Xperia V wondering why I never got in the right recovery, never noticed there was a second vibration either
Good luck with the phone and hope you enjoy the rom with gapps

Recovery Corrupted?

Do I went to upgrade my wife's G2 to a newer TWRP version. Instead of smartly doing this by flashing the new zip in twrp, I used JMZ's twrp app to flash the newer version. It said success and thought all was good.
When I return to recovery, it's just a black screen nothing loads. I rebooted and tried again. Same problem. Rebooted and tried flashing CWM through ROM manager. Same result - black recovery screen.
By now I've tried to access fastboot but fastboot doesn't recognize device (although ADB had no problem). I've attempted flashing the IMG file from the official TWRP app and also using the "dd" method on terminal Emulator.
I'm at a complete loss here. My guess is the recovery is corrupted and anything short of using KDZ or TOT method to return to stock and re-root is going to just keep frustrating me.
Thoughts?

yeah those twrp apps are more trouble than they are worth on the G2 at least.
I think there was a lollipop version of autorec floating around might have to google it
or you could try and pull the recovery.img out of one of blastgators zips and flash with dd then flash the zip in twrp
I dont understand one thing, can you boot the phone? It can turn on normally? Anyway about the recovery, have you tried with AutoRec.apk? Google for it and it should install some old version of TWRP then go and find 3.0xx bumped TWRP which is recommended in most of roms and flash it through the old one, after that reboot recovery and youll have the latest recovery

Yes the phone boots just fine. It's just the recovery that's been blasted. I'm gonna try the autorec you guys mentioned. I'll let you know how it goes.
When you say find a bumped version of TWRP, that is something different than the one on the official site right? Also, the version I found of autorec was the kitkat version. I believe I rooted her phone from Lollipop. Will this cause problems with running autorec? Moreover will it mess up my boot?

So tried autorec for the vs980. Unfortunately it can't find or install the Loki_tool. With that it closes the app. I've tried looking up info on the Loki tool, but I'm not finding anything that is being helpful.
I'm familiar with using the kdz method and might just do that and start fresh. Really wish I hadn't used that stupid twrp app now. I'll take any further suggestions that could save me from restoring stock.

Autorec works , it must. You have SuperSu? Go in supersu settings and uncheck something about 'name spaces' cant remember the whole thing. Then reboot, run autorec again.
I should have probably mentioned I'm on a custom rom already. Don't know if that's part of it.
I'm on RR MM 5.7.4 using built in root manager in the rom.
