Just picked it up have root and WiFi tethering through xposed. What next? I'm doubting theres a possibility of the boot loader being unlocked.

Possible bootloader unlock (currently for 2014 models?) -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/china-middleman-t2751177
otherwise, if you can't unlock, do not upgrade past 4.4. i.e. do NOT take 4.4.2 if you want to stay rooted with write protection disabled.

If I boot to the rw protection off with locked boot loader I still can't flash a custom recovery without having to use safestrap correct?

With a locked bootloader you can not flash 3rd party parts like recovery or roms.
Yes, rooted and using safe strap you can somewhat get around this. I believe you can flash a custom recovery in safe straped rom. But I'm not 100% sure as I have an unlocked bootloader and don't use safe strap.

How are people rooting Dev editions?

The Dev edition comes with the software update right? Does the jcase method work, or are people installing a custom recovering and just flashing superuser?
Sent from my Nexus 7
My big red de did not come with the update (no surprise there). To root it you unlock the bootloader, flash recovery and upon rebooting it asks if you want to root. You then swipe to root and reboot. Once rebooted, you update the supersu app and you are done.

I have the dev edition and I rooted with Jcase's PwnMyMoto exploit. I was told that I didn't need to unroot it to unlock the bootloader. I thought I would have to start from scratch and did what you did. Any thoughts on this. If I leave it rooted and unlock the boot loader will it still ask me to root the device, or do I just go ahead and flash a custom recovery image?

When you unlock the bootloader it will wipe your device clean. So you will need to re-root anyway. Flashing TWRP would be the easiest way to re-root. Also you will want to back up your files too.

Rooting

What is the past of least resistance to root a 4.4 tmo X? In order to keep data, is it still that insanely long process?

Bump............
WIth the T-Mobile variant you have two choices to root..
1. Unlock bootloader, flash twrp recovery, boot into twrp and install SU (or use TWRP's option to root). But this voids your warranty (since you don't have the developer edition), and unlocking the boot loader will wipe your device and data.
2. Use SlapMyMoto which has a lot of manual steps, and you need to reboot to "recovery" (well its modified and you don't have recovery), when you want R/W ability. (Or you have to also do the MotoWpNoMo process to gain R/W full time). But this has many steps.

thanks - re #1, will upgrades be painful i.e., new OTAs?

OTA's will be more painful with #2 as there will be more to restore to stock. And of course the unknowns of if the new OTA will be rootable or not, and how long before a root process comes out.
For #1, you should be able to just put stock recovery back and take the OTA, then reflash TWRP and re-root.

Well, if you don't have an unlocked bootloader, SlapMyMoto (which now incorporates the MotoWpNoMo process into its steps) is the only way (there have been some efforts to consolidate/automate the process). And may not be usable if you're already on 4.4.2 (taking the 4.4.2 OTA update or flashing the full 4.4.2 SBF prevents you from flashing older ROMs which is a crucial step in using SlapMyMoto).
I've not see a 4.4.2 specific root process for locked bootloaders yet, but to be honest, I have a unlocked bootloader, so I haven't been completely paying attention.
If you have an unlocked bootloader, root process is still the same.
there is not going to be any new way to root 4.4 is not going to get a new exploit because 4.4.2 is out and Devs are working on finding a way to root it so the people with locked bootloaders can update.
if you want to root your device you have allready been giving the only 2 ways to do it
Locked bootloader - SlapMyMoto
Unlocked bootloader - Customer Recovery and SUPERSU
please dont bump your thread for info you allready have.
here is a link to both guides for both methods and a guide for unlocking your bootloader.

Is it okay to unlock Bootloader while rooted 4.4 slapmymoto?

I'm currently rooted with 4.4 using the slapmymoto method. I'm ready to void my warranty by unlocking my bootloader via Motorola. Is it recommended to unlock the bootloader the way the phone is set up now, or should I go back to factory 4.4 and then unlock the bootloader? I'm just trying to make sure I don't brick my phone.
Thanks

Doesn't matter how you do it. It will work fine.
Just know that unlocking the bootloader will WIPE YOUR DATA. That means everything that was stored on your SD card is not gone.

Humm.... Not really sure. I thought it loaded a modified version of the stock recovery, but with write protection disabled. If this is the case, then it will still wipe your data.
Hopefully someone with more knowledge chimes in. I have not used slapmymoto since I unlocked my bootloader.
SlapMyMoto 1.0 does not touch the recovery. Your recovery is completely stock. MotoWPNoMo disables write protection for the system. I unlocked my bootloader while rooted via SlapMyMoto and retained root so I did not have to flash a custom recovery to gain root. However, there is nothing wrong with playing it safe and flashing back to stock and then you unlocking your bootloader.

You can if you want to play it safe, but if you are already rooted with SlapMyMoto then you really don't have to. The only issues you may run into is if you modified the system and there is an ota update.

If you're rooted you can use ADB instead. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to do it, and I know it may be a little hard to use install recovery on a locked BL.
You can ask for help here but that's not our forum, it's the S4 Active. Hope that helps.

If you're on rooted 4.4.2...that means write protection is enabled. So won't whatever you flash get undone on a reboot or power off?
Just curious....never had a locked boot loader....building my knowledge.

If you have a locked bootloader, and are on 4.4.2, as @kj2112 brings up, write protection would have been re-enabled when you took the 4.4.2 OTA, so any "system" changes you make will be lost at power off/on.
Next, having a locked bootloader, you'll kind of stuck. You can't flash/install anything that isn't digitally signed by Moto. You can side load APK's, but that is about it.
Thanks a lot @KidJoe and all people responded to my post

is there a way to root an unlock bootloader running stock 5.1
im on the pure edition.
You have to go to settings > developer options > oem unlocking. Turn that on. Then you can do the normal process to unlock the bootloader.

Flash twrp recovery, then choose reboot to system. Before rebooting, it should offer to root your phone if your phone is not rooted. That should work.

If you're unlocked, flash TWRP and do whatever you'd like to do. Flash the latest SuperSU ZIP or install CM. That's the benefit of an unlocked bootloader...
