Help me change the future of education! - Off-topic

Let me preface all of this by saying:
I'm looking for input and help on my project, I'd love to answer any clarifying questions anyone might have. I'm trying to put my idea out there beyond the academic world/my social groups/peers/family members/etc. I've been getting a lot of positive feedback and emotional support but not much hands on help and mentoring. I'm sort of stuck in terms of upward movement without proper funding so, in addition to applying for competitions and grants, this is another way I'm trying to spread my project.

Simply put, I was one of those kids that was known in my class for disliking school. I never had trouble getting good grades, I had plenty of friends, I participated in lacrosse, played percussion in the band, and I was very involved in ceramics. However, when it came down to it, nothing I was learning academically was captivating. It seemed like I was piling on one distraction after another to get away from the fact that I had this burning desire to be passionate about what I was learning that wasn't being met. It wasn't until my junior year at West Chester University that I was introduced to a dialog style classroom. It was so much more engaging and interesting to hear and discuss other people's perspectives on the topic, using their own experiences to frame how they saw today's problems.
In class education and online education is not engaging enough. Students rarely have the opportunity to share and have a dialog about their perspectives on the topic. There is a huge disconnect between what is being taught and what students experience on a daily basis and it has caused me to see that our education system lacks a comprehensive way of connecting individual perceptions to the logical education framework.
Allowing students to interact in a structured dialog platform that leads the conversation into an area of sharing perspectives and developing a personal connection to the topic will allow for more interested and engaged students, critical/creative thinking and a passion for life long education. It also allows a safe space to raise concerns or issues the students are curious about. I want to create an optionally anonymous online structured dialog platform that is to be used as a supplement to traditional methods of teaching. I want to provide students a safe space and allow them the opportunity to share their experiences that are relevant to the topic and help each other broaden their world view. I want to inspire passion in education.
I believe if I can introduce this method to schools that are in need, they'll have more passionate kids graduating and going to universities. Unfortunately, I also understand that these same teachers are also pressed for time, must use their own funds to buy classroom supplies, and have to teach to the test in order to receive proper funding.
The dialog platform aims to influence students to have a dialog outside of the classroom, online. That's why I want to target universities first; I hope to inspire passion early on in students so they aren't wasting too much money trying to figure things out, especially with the insane increase in tuition costs. I want to show them that anything you choose can be an advantage depending on how you use it. I want to introduce passion back into the classroom and allow students to see that we all have limitless potential.
After an initial MVP is set up and tested in a classroom setting, I'd like to market my proof of concept to MOOC's to increase their 7-15% completion rate. Eventually I'd like to see a pro bono service provided for high schools in need to set up their dialog platform. I want students to understand that just because the options aren't presented right in front of you, it doesn't mean there aren't tons available to you; it just takes commitment, creativity, passion, time, and practice.
I'd love to answer any questions, receive feedback, your vote if you like my idea Place Vote Here (you can vote 3 times daily, top 3 projects gets a chance to win $3,000) and if you know anyone that may be interested in helping/joining me in trying to create this platform, please send them my way.
If you do in fact like my idea, it would mean the world to me if you'd spread it along your social and professional networks. The prize money isn't as important as the exposure I'm trying to gain for my project. I'm really looking for dedicated and talented individuals who want to be part of my project.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. You can contact me at Glenn.Chon[at]gmail.com

is it illegal to mod g1 and give them root

Hi to all i was just wondering if it is illegal to mod other peoples phone because i am in school and i mod peoples phone you know give them root and change boot img (like the T-mobile G1/My Touch 3G) and my dad thinks its illegal and want me to stop he also thinks that some one is going to connect it to a bomb and blame me i just want to get some other peoples views and such thanks for you feed back!-)
I'm pretty sure the "modding G1 and giving them root" police are only in Oregon, so you should be ok. Although I hear they are expanding their field offices to include Fargo, ND and North Grovesnerdale, CT so be on the lookout if you are near those areas.
In all serious, I think you are fine.....

**** good lookin out. I don't want to go to jail... haha
Ahahhhahahahaahahahahahahhahahahhahahaahahahahahhaahha! Ok, now that I got that out of my system. It is not illegal to mod an electronic device. When it becomes illegal is when you mod the device to do illegal actions, like play burnt copies of video games, or run illegal version of operating systems, etc. With that said, modding your g1/mt3g is just fine. As long as your not modding the phone to be a detonator for a nuclear bomb, your fine. Be sure to issue a disclaimer before modding anyone's phone. You don't want anyone coming back to your demanding money for a bricked phone. Just let them know that your trained in what you do, but there is still no guarantee that everything will go as planned. I've modded a couple of peoples g1's and I had them reply to an email with my personal disclaimer. Just as a back up...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SUPER FUNNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but seriously...when I was younger I ALWAYS questioned if my actions hack/mod wise were legal......
fyi, it's now only illegal to load an old cyanogen mod with the proprietary google apps (for now, who knows what the future will bring legislation wise) .....according to google.....and probably their power lawyers.
While we are on the subject of legallity?
Hi to all i was just wondering if it is illegal to watch interspecies erotica? Because i am in school and i watch people you know give them root, and my dad thinks its illegal and want me to stop. he also thinks that some one is going to connect it to the web and blame me. i just want to get some other peoples views and such thanks for you feed back!-)

LOL
just keep clear of any suspicious activities.... if someone asks for your help in making something that goes boom...its more than likely an fbi agent
It's not illegal unless you distribute copyrighted software. If you are simply rooting the phone you are fine, but if you have to downgrade it you are technically redistributing software without a license to do so. Either way I wouldn't worry about them coming to knock on your door for flashing a few kids phones.
On another note. Although it may make you the cool guy in class who can mod phones, I would advise you tell them to learn on their own. Otherwise you will end up being tech support for countless idiots who don't know what to do with root. Do you really feel like spending hours walking people through a Hero rom install, or SD partitioning? Cause that's what you are asking for by doing so.
The whole point of performing such mods is for the learning experience, and expanding the capabilities of your device for personal enjoyment. It's not so people can say "look what I can do" or "my phone is cooler than yours". My opinion is: If you won't put forth the effort to read and learn how, you don't need it.
You probably spent a good bit of time learning what you have. I know it feels great to be able to show off those skills, but in the long run they will thank you for making them learn rather than doing it for them.

I'm With Adobe

The battle has begun.
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=113492765344092&v=info
Adobe Vs. Apple War Generates Rage, Facebook Group
It was inevitable. Adobe has an unofficial Facebook fan club: “I’m With Adobe,” an allusion to the viral “I’m With Coco” campaign for jilted ex-Tonight Show host Conan O’Brien. As of Saturday afternoon, the group (started by John Addis, a Web & Media Director at Rizzi Designs) has attracted more than 1,200 members in less than three days.
The group’s manifesto is:
The recent war between Adobe and Apple reached a breaking point on April 8, 2010, when Steve Jobs not only recommitted to never allowing Flash to run on the iPhone or iPad, but even banning Adobe’s new Flash-to-iPhone C compiler which was to go on sale Saturday, April 10.
There is no longer any debate as to who the “bad guy” is in this story — Apple has proven themselves to be anti-competition, anti-developer, and anti-consumer.
I stand with Adobe.
While you would expect a club like this to attract rabid Adobe supporters (and there is a lot of that), several members expressed their longstanding support for Adobe and Apple and the difficulty of reconciling their frustration with the new SDK agreement and their fierce loyalty to Apple. As one Facebook user put it :
How did we get to this point? The tension between Apple and Adobe has been simmering for quite a while, but the clear breaking point (as we all know) was the release of the new SDK agreement which essentially blocks Flash developers from the iPhone.
I tried to put together an (incomplete) collection of Adobe employee reactions— from the iPad release to Adobe’s “Viva La Resistance.” In my last post, “Adobe: Go Screw Yourself Apple,” some commenters pointed out that the title was unfair because it was the words of Adobe’s Platform Evangelist Lee Brimelow and not Adobe’s official position. True, Adobe CTO’s carefully worded (sadly, less colorful) blog was the “official” response, however, Brimelow’s post and comments by several of his Flash colleagues forms an interesting constellation that outlines a deep anger. Adobe is furious. Further, as we previously noted, Adobe did look at Brimelow’s blog and let him run with it anyway— only pushing him to extract one line and add a disclaimer (the disclaimer was added roughly one hour after he sent a Twitter link to his post).
First, before we look at the iPhone OS 4.0 fallout, let’s skip to somewhat happier times (to last weekend) when Adobe’s employees lined up at the Apple store to eagerly purchase Steve Jobs’ latest offering. Arno Gourdol, a member of the Adobe Air team, documents their morning: “After queuing for an hour at the flagship Apple Store in SF this morning, we finally got our hands on a stack of magical devices. We’ve spent the rest of the day having fun getting the first Adobe AIR apps running on the iPad….We have also been working on bringing up the first “HD” apps that take advantage of the gorgeous screen of the iPad.”

Go Adobe and Smash them apples!
Not really sure where I stand here. On one hand I'm kinda pissed at Apple, but on the other I can understand them not wanting developers to be lazy by producing poorly ported apps.
I dunno, in all honesty I don't really care. This was inevitable, and really Adobe can't do ****e about it.
Are you serious ? We all know that your personal vendetta against Apple is way over the top and you need help. But are you seriously sitting here in a mobile phone forum comparing Apple computer to Nazi Germany ? Comparing a company that has sold 50 million iPhones to " willing " consumers that voluntarily spent their hard earned money on what they think is a great product , to a regime that rounded up 6 million jewish people and exterminated them ?
Are you trying to offend as many people world wide as you can ?

Now that would be a trick, threading a square screw into a square hole! I figure if we could find a way to do that, the universe will be able to make square planets. Then the world really would be flat lol
I'll tell you what...
..if you watch all the Wimp.com videos from beginning to end it will be a greater mind-altering/learning experience, than all the LSD on the planet +/- ten years ivy-league education!
I've learned more about about the human condition in 6 months of watching these videos than i have in 38 years of my real life. If you want to see what people are really capable of creating, instead of being drowned daily by what people are are capable of destroying, this is the answer for you!
If this planet is being ruined by 99% of the population, it's the 0.1% that you see in these videos that make the continuation of this species worthwhile!
To do a thread-type inception...were i to bring a person from history back from the dead?.. i would pick Leonardo De Vinci. In an era where dogmatic practices were holding the world back from immense discoveries, the few that dared to challenge the 'accepted' facts, Copernicus, for example, who 'dared' to suggest that the Earth wasn't the centre of the universe..only a part of it, these people, these innovators, led the world into an new era of understanding..these are the people who have driven the advancement of mankind.
In a thousand years from now, who will the future historians be thinking back on as the 'greats' of our time? The Physicians like 'Hawkins'? The artists like 'Dali'? Perhaps the visionaries like 'Asimov'?
Who know's who it'll be...but i'm willing to bet that the first ones for consideration will be the same people who are currently pushing the boundaries, doing the things that that we consider unimaginable, and yet are out there doing the impossible for the enjoyment and betterment of mankind!
I personally have a deep-seated hatred for the ignorance of mankind, but an overwhelming optimism that a select few can make a wealth of difference for the many!
/FridayNightPhilosophy!
EDIT: God only knows, as i sit here ,pissed, listening to great tunes..that out of 7 Billion souls currently on this planet, that my contribution to the planet as a whole is next to useless.
In a million years from now, the best that i can hope for is that my skeletal remains are part of the 0000.1% that may become part of the geological fossil record, that future generations can study and glean an ounce of information from. (Their deductions being that i came from an era where DNA destroying substances, and a penchant for warefare led to the extinction of an entire race...and that we were all obsessed by self-destructive paradigms that ended with us donating nothing more than a few genes to the generations to come, rather than being the fathers of a new and enlightened epoch of history.
Homo-Sapien? Pfft..
..in a million years from now we'll be nothing more that an another branch of the evolutionary tree that suddenly became a bookmark in history! The only hope as i see it is if people wake up to the fact that all we have is what we are now! We're living at at a turning point..and if we don't do the right things now, we'll be expunged from the record books, forever.
That's impressive!
More to the point, a square drill bit boggles my primitive Mind.

Internet Censorship - EMERGENCY ACTION REQUIRED

Please
WatchAnonymous: Internet Censorship - EMERGENCY ACTION REQUIRED
THIS IS AN IMMEDIATE CALL TO ACTION! There are two new immediate threats to internet freedom: Obama's Cyber-Security Executive Order and the TPPA. We must mobilize resistance immediately.
Transcript:
Greetings Citizens of the United States and the World.
Emergency Action Required.
We have been valiant thus far in protecting our internet. We stopped both SOPA and CISPA. Then they pushed for the international treaty, ACTA, and the entire world pushed back. But we're not finished yet. There are two more threats that we must unite together again to defeat.
The first is a CISPA like executive order that the White House is considering. In order to pass these bills that Congress has rejected, the Obama administration has taken to the use of Executive Orders so that they may bypass Congress entirely. This is incredibly concerning as the process is very complex for Congress to overturn laws passed this way. The Supreme Court may also declare it unconstitutional, but such incidents are very rare. With enough opposition, we can stop this before it even gets off the ground.
The second, and more immediate threat, is another international treaty. Like ACTA, this treaty has been negotiated in secret. The Trans-Pacific Partnership is so secret that not even the Congressional Committee in charge of such treaties can even see the bill. It is however, viewable by six hundred corporate representatives. All we know is what has been leaked thus far, and it reaches well beyond the scope of simply censoring the internet. It's yet another bill to grant more power to multinational corporations. If this treaty is ratified, the only way it can be altered is through the agreement of every country involved.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation has tried to rally the troops: "Don't Let TPP Become the Next ACTA: Contact Your Lawmakers and Demand Transparency!"
...the TPP is being negotiated in secret, and on a fast timetable. We don't know what's in the TPP IP chapter, and that's what worries us. Entertainment industry executives who are members of the Industry Trade Advisory Committee will likely get to see the agreement drafts -- again -- but the rest of us will be kept in the dark unless we speak up now.
And they are not alone in attempting to warn everyone. The Huffington Post, Guardian, ACLU, Examiner, Alternet, Current, Techdirt, DailyKos, Truthout, and many more have all reported on this atrocity. Even members of Congress have introduced legislation due the extreme secrecy of this treaty.
This is an immediate call to action.
Contact your members of Congress, educate your friends and family, create art, videos, and stage protests. Do everything you can to help raise awareness as they plan to push this through before the next election. We have very little time to stop this. Many around the world and a few in the States have been trying to raise awareness. Let us unite once again to protect the very few freedoms we have left!
We are Anonymous.
We are Legion.
We do not Forgive Oppression.
We do not Forget Censorship.
Expect us.

Ya, me too!! That would be awesome!! But on the other hand, i think those people, who don't know who Anons are and what they are fighting against and for, will just think of them as some hacker who hacked into the TV stations and well some others will be scared and few others will just LOL.. And If that really happens, we will be very pleased!!:fingers-crossed:
So basically there's 2 things that might happen, that you know nothing about, but there's stuff that you suggest may probably happen.
Sigh. I feel like performing a bit of censorship of my own right now, but I'll restrain myself.

1ASBAK1's Android [Apps] and [Tips] that survived years of evolutionary pressure.

Hi there guys,
I am a Medical student from Amsterdam. and have finally decided to participate in this forum with the goal Sharing My personal android [Apps] and [Tips] that survived years of evolutionary pressure. And I want to do so in a way that is a little bit different than that we are used to, via a mindmap that is (scroll down) :good:
Get me right here I am by no means even remotely related to the neighbor of the cousin of a Developer.
I am just one of you guys, a regular general xda users that is trying to distillate everything useful out of these Forums and put it to use
This is the moment I will spit some of this love right back in thy face.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Introduction]
Gone are the days of typing a text messages with T9 only to find yourself counting the characters to minimize it all to 1 SMS.
These are the days in which we use our phones (to) excessively for every little this and that.
I do believe that it is how we have set up our phones on a the basic level (not the Rom, kernel, ect we have installed on it) that determines most of our user experience. I know that I probably p*ss*d off several people right there.
Don't get me wrong here, these forums are full of GREAT Devs delivering GREAT work kernel-and-rom-wise. And YES I do think that for instance a different touch-screen driver can defiantly be a game changer in the way we use our phone. In addition, there are much more of these examples(charger control, screen calibration etc.) that quite enhance user experience.
In my humble opinion I know that eventually these things are not what makes my phone a great, useful or even mind extending tool. Trust me here, for quite some time I have been coping with well-known tendency to keep flashing and flashing.
trough the years I have gone all MAD- [ASOP-MIUI-CAF-CM(lots of its "distro's" included)-Sailfish-Stock'nd'Hybrid]-APE-Sh*T on my Phones (i9070 -> nexus5 -> Opo)
I have to admit that there are still times (*kuch*OFTEN*kuch*) my behavior relapses into the fatty livered Flashaholic I once was. :crying:
I know for a fact that there are quite some readers who are like "yup. I can relate to this". :highfive: ! so lets get serious.
Generally speaking, every time you flash a (non-major android release)ROM there doesn't really change anything essential in the way you use your phone right?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I do not want to get all to jibberish philosophical on the subject because initially I am here to bring you something hopefully useful. So you can skip this paragraph if you want:
All I know is that the PLACEBO effect does quite some magical things to the humans we are, so my best guess is that most probably "it" does also it's effect on these forums. In short:
If we expect X then we will experience at least a little bit of X.
For that, If we put effort into flashing a zip and we get an emotional stimulus accordingly (examples: "Look at me being awesomely geeky" or "Wow I hope I won't be destroying my phone with this flashable camera Hal") Chances are that what we will experience as
"THE SMOOTHEST ROM EVER" will at least partially be caused by this often seemingly paradoxical phenomena called Placebo.
Sounds familiar right. This example is simply written in about only 8 out of 10 threads you open. :silly:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But well, lets get to what it is this seemingly cynical person has you to offer :good: (don't worry) :
Over the years, there have been several "phases" In winch we have gone knee deep into a specific topic. I think this will not sound unfamiliar since I am definitely not the only one here. Just to name a few, I know some of you can relate to.
Launchers, Equalizer, gestures, photography(editing),remote control, and so on and so forth. my most recent for instance are Raw photo shooting and Google Cardboard. I say knee deep because as I said before I am no developer so I haven't gone in neck(code)deep.
What I want to do in this thread is described the Android deliciousness that have survived this strong urge to keep jumping from one '"Phase" to another and to combine this with the tweaks and general stuff that has made it so far trough the rising android evolutionary resistances by growing competition and the constant change of the technological world we live in.
Of course, I am not going to make this a freaking blizzardous long post containing all details and way to obvious apps etc. because that would
1]. Not be of any use for you. since you probably know everything already.
2]. Everything you have to setup according to your style. There are only a few MUST HAVE things which get a special treatment. (see photo below)
3]. Thiss will take me way to much time which I don't have since I am already typing this document to avoid studying.
Tldr:
I am going to superficially share my personal distilled [APPS] & [TIPS] and the way I use my phone every day. Hopefully skipping most of the way to obvious aspects. (facebook,Instagram, the power on button of your phone..or the fact that you are continuously seeing your nose without you even realizing it.etc) I want to keep it readable. agreed? See below

Did you notice how I did my best to emphasize the "personal" aspect of this thread in the first Alinea? If not let me just explain one seemingly simple thing. I am just a 22 y.o. Dutch student with his own views on the world and for that on the way we use our phones. If you think I suck because of the things I write in this thread. Then I want to congratulate you! You are as human as me. we all have opinions. Sharing them in a respectful/discrete way is MEGA appreciated. see what I did there?
