[Q] RED LED Light, Phone won't start up - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I am having some problems. Last light, my phone ran out. I charged it, and when I woke up this morning, it won't start up. Every time I plug it into the charger, it gives a RED LED light at the top. Every time I pull it out of the charger, the RED LED disappears. It is running a pre-rooted version of Android KitKat 4.4, so I guess that means it has lost warranty...
I have not tried plugging it into a PC yet.
Please help, thanks.

Sounds like it's bricked. Can you get into flashmode when plugged into pc?

No, it couldn't be recognized by any programs (SONY PC COMPANION, Flashtool etc)
Very weird: a minute ago, it was charging, wouldn't boot up, still red led like before etc... And I didn't realize my laptop was on low battery and ran out, and my phone stopped charging. And the phone started up automatically after that? It had 3% battery, so it was not charging.

The battery keeps going from 3 percent to 4 and back.

The phone will not be recognized when off, when off keep pushing volume up and connect via USB to PC, it will be recognized in Flashmode and flash a new FTF 4.4 from Flashtool.
If it turned on then leave the phone under charge (Wall Charger) for at last 4 hours and check again, if it still give you problems then I will recommend to do a Factory Reset or flash a new KK and wipe everything, Data, Appslog and Cache.

Dead xperia T

Well my GF had a lot of trouble with this phone, we replaced the battery 3 times due to them failing. Anyway I updated it to official 4.3 for her and left it totally stock, no root or anything. All was well for a few days. One night we left it charging, when we woke up it was still pretty dead. She used it for about 5 mins then it died, now it won't charge or switch on! Got it charging offline but still didn't take any juice. Flashed in flashmode several times, now if I connect to anything it goes straight into flashmode and still won't charge! I bought her a galaxy s2 for now but is there anything we can do? Is it possible it needs yet another new battery?
Just to add I tried all the fixes such as leave it on charge, remove battery, button combo etc. When it does "charge" it doesn't take any charge
Sent while my supervisor wasn't looking
Try replacing the battery again and if this happens again it is definitely a hardware problem
Sent from my EndeavorU using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I don't want to start a new thread, so I will post it here. My Xperia T is a dead phone in the moment and I was searching the web and of course xda to find a fix (like for Xperia Z).
How it happened: Yesterday my phone was working like a charm with CM11. I wanted to sell it and so I was trying to flash a stock rom. The flashing aborted with error every single time (Processing system.sin). I was able to flash all the .sin except for system.sin
After the phone was a soft brick I could enter fastboot/flashmode and flash the kernel from CM11 and install it without any problems.
I tried several times to flash stock until my phone bricked. Now it is charging and nothing happens, no fastboot, no flashmode, no sign of life. Only when the battery is detached the LED flashes one time (red) when cable is connected
Edit: The phone was able to go in flashmode but after few seconds it disconnected, in reconnected in flashmode. Also the phone is now recognized by the computer as "qhsusb-dload"
Edit Update: When I connect the phone to the computer an press Vol+ and Power Button for a longer time, the LED turn on (red color) and the qhsusb-dload disappears from device manager. After 2-3 seconds the LED turns of and the device manager shows qhsusb-dload again.
Now I have connected the phone to wall charger with a rubber band on the power button and sometimes the red LED turns on and stays for a few seconds

Phone suddenly died/ hard bricked.

The phone (C5303 - Stock ROM - Locked BL - No Root) was working normally. The last time I checked, it had 60% battery.
The phone suddenly stopped working.
I tried to turn on the phone. Nothing Happened.
I tried to hard reset. Nothing Happened.
I even tried to charge the phone... Even the red illumination light was not working!! Hence, nothing happened at all.
I couldn't find a solution to this...Please help!! :crying: :crying:

I would suggest for you to first, hold the off button under the battery cover for about 20 seconds. This might stimulate "battery removal" on the SP. Afterwards, try plugging in the wall charger and see if the device react.

Did that. Still no change.
No red LED light, no vibration, even the screen is not on.
If pressing the yellow button on the back for 10 seconds doesn't work after charging it for 12 hours, you either have a faulty charger or a dead phone. (hardware failure)
Last chance would be to use a different charger. If that doesn't work, you will have to return your phone and file a warranty claim if you have NOT unlocked your bootloader nor rooted it.
Should you have rooted or unlocked your phone then I can only suggest visiting this link: http://tinyurl.com/n35lsjn

Well, it's definitely not rooted or unlocked. And it's warranty has been expired (more than 1 year old).
I guess I'll go the Sony service center or else, the championship!!
Thanks for the support anyways!! :good:
Hi,
Couple of days ago same happened to me.
I just took phone to hand and realized that its completely dead. Just like this, without a reason. No vibrations, led blinks, no reaction for any button combinations, plug-in charger and so on.
After a long time of fighting, reading forums, youtube clips etc. something started to change and prevented me to buy another phone.
First symptom was that in time where power button is pressed the red light had blinked two times shortly and then again and again. When button had been released again nothing.
Then I've been trying to connect phone to PC in flashmode. It has failed but I've observed that right after usb connector is plugged, windows knows that something has been connected ( "USB device connected" sound) but 2 -3 seconds later
disconnected ("USB device disconnected sound"). In this moment PC companion even was able to complete step "connect the device" but right after that it returned error (disconnect device, connect again and try again).
Then I connected phone to wall charger again. Now, when I do this, in first moment i see short blink of red light and immediately after this it starts to shine constantly for a couple of minutes. After that red light goes out for another couple of minutes and whole sequence repeats again and again in loop (short red light -> long red light-> no light).
I've red somewhere that constant red light means that phone battery has not enough power even to run charging mode via kernel (not enough power to run kernel). The suggestion is to be patient and charge the phone via wall charger for 15 or 20 hours, what currently happens. I'm still waiting for miracle. I could buy new battery but I wouldn't like to do this for nothing.
If you have any suggestions or advices/confirmation what the red light sequence means please feel free to comment @karan please share with us the result of service intervention and root cause of issue if possible. Thx in advance.
ps. additionally I've discovered that usb cable which I used is broken. different phone connected via this cable to pc is not recognized (nothing happens) but under another cable it does normally. It might be the reason of problems but I have no Idea if it could result the battery dead.
Hi,
Anyone knows if phone should work without battery? I've seen such information on polish android forum however when I unplugged the battery and plugged charger nothing happened. Only one short red blink and then nothing. If phone should work in such state it means that my problem is not related to battery.

Xperia Z1 can't turn on

Hello guys.
I have problem - I have some problems with battery, and this is first time since that my Xperia Z1 (With Android 5.0.2) completely run out of battery. And now, i am charging for at least 3 hours, and there is still red led diod. Sometimes i dont have red diode neither, so i must disconnect and connect charger back. I trying push that button next to SIM slot, and Volume up + power button too. It responds by vibrate, but nothing happens. Still can't turn on phone, and when i try to do that (not conenct to chrger), red diode just start blink like when battery is empty. Any ideas? I wanna claim that pone because of battery, but i have root, so i must delete it first in some way...
I have Sony Xperia Z1 C6903 with Android 5.0.2 and ROOT by KingoRoot (i think)
I would be VERY glad for any idea and respond
Wait longer. Give it at least a day of charging before you give up on it.

Use the wall charger and OEM cable, if possible. Connecting it to a USB host just complicates the charging process.
Its Okay now, thanks god... I just left it charging, battery ico show up and i turn it on in normal way.
Thank's for respond man

Will only boot to fastboot mode

Hi everyone. my z3 compact got wet... waterproof phone supposedly but it soon turned itself off. i've had it in rice for a while but it wont boot up. I've used the yellow reset button and it vibrates 3 times and does nothing. when I plug it into the computer tho I am able to get fastboot mode. I'd rather not have to send it back to Sony as I am without a phone. anyone have any idea how I can get it to boot normally. I'm presuming as it goes into fastboot mode the hardware isn't bricked? thanks for any advice you can give me.
Did you already tried to flash full stock TFT via FalshTool (and Phone in FlashMode)?
I'm currently waiting for a password for the flashtool..... I tried running repair phone on sony pc companion and the pc seemed happy but the phone still wont start. 3 vibrations when I try. currently the phone is plugged into the wall hoping it will charge. it is showing the red battery icon that flashes. I suppose the first hurdle is to get the thing to charge altho last night before I tried the repair phone option when plugged into charger it did say 100% charged.

Waiting for a password for the flashtool? It's free and shouldn't need any passwords, unless you mean password from Sony for unlocking your bootloader? I hope not.
Three vibrations means turning the phone off. Two vibrations is on.
Try the power button while plugged into a PC to see if any USB functions start when the phone boots up. If the phone can be seen in your PC but nothing on the phone, then the screen is duff.
I think the next stop is Sony repair centre, or if it's out of warranty, $80 on a genuine screen on ebay, a guitar pick and a hair dryer.
thanks guys. ok i've done some googling. seems I have been looking at the wrong flashtool. I was looking at one called Emma..... the official sony one. I'm now presuming I should be using the one at flashtool.net? I'll have to download that at home later. works pc has all sorts of blocking things on it. the screen was working yesterday as I could see the fastboot screen but that was all I could get. Am I right in saying the led ligghts blue when it goes into flash mode?

Good news, if the screen comes on and it goes into flashmode then it should be possible to rescue it.
I'm still puzzled as to why the partitions/system would be corrupted from water damage, unless it's something to do with the motherboard itself.
I have had the phone plugged into the original wall charger for a while now. the screen goes from blank to the battery charging icon every 3 or 4 seconds. The battery is red showing low charge and doesn't seem to be going up at all. If the water indicator shows red (which it does) will this void my warranty with Sony? I'm going to leave it on charge here all afternoon at work til I go home. That will have given it about 5 hours on charge so if the battery isn't improving by then it isn't looking good is it..... I've managed to get flashtool on the pc here and it has detected a device in fastboot mode. Don't know if this is a good sign or not as without the battery charging it's useless
Just get an full stock FW (TFT-File) and put it in the correct folder for FlashTool.
Then flash the full tft rom - HowTo here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z/general/tutorial-how-to-flash-stock-roms-t2240614
To get into Flashmode (not Fastboot Mode) push Vol Down (hold it) and then plug in USB (while phone is off!)
But do this first if the Flashtool program ask you to do so...

You are right to be worried about trying to flash the device with a low battery. If power fails during the flash it really will become a brick.
Don't try a flash unless you have at least 7% battery.
Thanks for all your help. Battery won't charge at all so it looks like the only option is a repair shop..... Like you say it really isn't worth risking bricking it.

[Q] Strange (hard?) brick

Hi,
After many years of enjoying this magnificent phone the disaster came.
The phone discharged overnight and switched off. In the morning I had to send some texts, so plugged the wall charger into USB socked (a weak one ~500mA), after few moments a charging icon appeared and stated that battery has 1%. Ok, I really had to send those messages: I've pressed the power button and phone started to boot.
Sony logo: OK, purple wave, OK...
After 10-20 seconds it suddenly switched of, red LED started to blink.
I thought: OK, system startup needs a lot of power, maybe a charger is too week to keep up.
So I left phone for few more minutes to charge, but without success.
That was the last time I saw screen was on.
Phone is a C6903, running on a stock, rooted 14.6.A.1.236 with the recent XZRecovery.
Bootloader has been unlocked.
For the moment I've tried everything but opening back and doing the testport-trick.
When I connect the power only red led blinks (I left the phone charging overnight, no change).
When I try to enter flash mode: nothing happens but red blinking light.
When I try to start phone nothing happens at all.
But there is still hope:
I connected the phone to 2A charger using a magnetic cable.
Then I've connected normal USB cable to my PC, strange thing started to happen:
When I pressed volume Up (even after few minutes of connecting power+usb) the phone suddenly jumped to fastboot mode (blue led, it was discovered by PC, fastboot terminal was functional)
When I press power button, phone vibrates for a second, then the led pattern changes to: 1s red followed by 0.1s green, then long red, then it repeats...
I'm still unable to enter any recovery nor flashmode...
I'd really appreciate any help, have you got any ideas left how can I revive my phone?

Hi, this just happened to me, my phone has been dead for over 4 weeks with just the red led blinking. i tried the test point thing with no success at that point I gave up but last week i decided to get a new genuine battery and it worked it booted up. Your battery is just completely dead thats why it won't boot up!

Yup! That was it (at least I think so, I don't have new battery yet)
The Al part of positive battery terminal was broken: I have no idea why, maybe because of age, oxidation and high currents that were drained from this LiPo cell...
Anyway I've managed to temporarily join two broken Al parts, kernel and recovery booted successfully.
Now I need to wait for a replacement battery.
Phone is alive again, thanks tilakpatel for help!
But the magnetic cable trick might be useful in other hardbrick cases: just connect magnetic charger, connect normal USB cable to PC and hold volUp. Phone should be able to enter fastboot even with completely drained battery...
