Im trying to help my friend with his Xperia Z1. A couple of days ago, it reboot when it got plugged into charge. Then after that, everytime its connected to USB the phone becomes unusable.
Its completely stock 4.4.2 and while plugged into USB it becomes really really hot, battery discharges about 10% every minute or so and the screen flickers and can't be used (Feels like 100% cpu usage).
When you go into running apps, you can't see it because it constantly refreshes the list, and when its plugged into a computer, it works for a few seconds and then stops responding.
It works perfectly while not charging, and can be charged using the magnetic plug (Dock). Plugging into stock charger USB, car usb, or a computer all results in a freeze up/100% cpu usage etc If the phone is completely off, it can charge up very slowly while using USB and does not get hot, however the fastest way to charger it is via the dock option.
This is Australian stock, and is the second phone he has had to do this, his first phone he bought in Nov 2013, updated it to a 4.3 build in December and it did a similar thing, got this late December 2013, and has lasted until now, and is unusable while connected to USB.
This means it can't be updated, backed up, rooted or anything and sony want it to be sent away for weeks. Has anyone had any similar problems or know of a solution. It doesn't feel like its a hardware thing, but possibly something has shorted in the plug.. Not sure?
Thanks

Haven't had this issue myself but it does sound like a hardware problem rather than software, but software could also be to blame too.
It's probable because the phones on pure stock that it's the apps that are installed on the phone.
To eliminate this, make a back up of media files like pics, videos, music. Then flash an FTF file so that you have bare bones stock.
These can be found in the mega collection in the general section.
Run some tests on the charging capabilities whilst it's completely stock and empty and you'll then know if it's a hardware issue or not, if the problem re occurs then it's hardware, if not then it's probably something that was installed or a load of things that were installed.
If it's the latter then try to reduce whats coming in and out of the phone, having a tonne of apps with a large footprint is going to bring any phone to it's knees and that's with any phone or even a tablet.
I don't think flashing an FTF while in flashmode should do much harm and the OS isn't loaded at this point either so the load should be minimal, if he or yourself are not comfortable with this then i'd suggest biting the bullet and sending it off to Sony.
Hope this helps.
Might not be the same, but I had this on the xperia s. Turned out the USB lead was defective.

Hi Dladz, thanks for the suggestion, can the FTF be flashed if its not rooted ? I dont know much about sony, I have a rooted/rommed LG G2, but not sure about the Sony files.
Also, can I flash it if I can't connect it to USB ?
And to the other reply, its definitely not the lead ,we've tried about 10 different leads.
Hi, I've had the same issue.
Try to plug in USB, than use system info *#*#4636#*#* -> Battery information
Look on "Battery status" line (dont know exactly how it sound on english ROMs) if youre see permanently changing status Charging (USB) <-> Battary the 90% probability you have hardware problem.
I fix it only in sony service center with motherboard change.

Hey everyone. Been using the Z1 for a while now and ran into a strange problem two days ago. For no apparent reason, my phone stopped charging unless it is plugged into computer that was turned on. If I use any normal charger, it doesn't recognize it. If the computer is off, no charge. Only when connected as MTP does it charge. And charging via the computer's usb charges much slower than it used to. File transfers and everything also work fine.
This happened shortly after I upgraded from the old momxdified to the newest version. Thought it could be firmware so I did a full clean flash of the stock 534 ftf and no luck. Did repair in PC Companion and no luck. Now I'm thinking it has to be hardware related?
I can now sometimes pick up a charge if I use a cheap wall charger with a very low power output. But only sometimes. The stock Z1 charger doesn't work at all.
Figure I'll go to the service center later, but wanted to check here first in case anyone has seen this or has any ideas.
Cheers

Sounds like a hardware issue, but try a hard power down, volume up and hold the power button down until you feel multiple vibrates, power the phone back up and see if that helps.

Thanks for the response. Tried that before going with the full wipe ftf flash or pc companion repair, and no luck. Finally took it to the service center today and they spent an hour reinstalling the software (no doubt doing the exact same thing I did twice before bringing it to them) then offered to replace it. Just going to miss the old Z1 for the next week, when I'll have to rely on my old S2 to take pics of my engagement celebration this weekend.
Appreciate the response and suggestion man.
I had similar problem with non original wall and car chargers because the output was to low so the phone do not recognize them at all. I didn't test the phone with the pc yet, I prefer take out the SDcard and copy anything what I need directly. I hope don't have this problems anymore so I will use original chargers only.
EDIT: SDcard not simcard..
Twice now since updating to official .199 UK unbranded i've been hit by a bug where my phone won't recognise charger unless its turned off. It's fine for a couple of days then gets very random about whether it will charge when turned on. Usually this followed by the next day it won't charge at all. This time i've noticed my laptop won't recognise Xperia T internal storage either and ADB/USB debugging don't work either.
I've hard rebooted, booted in safe mode and factory reset from within the phone and it makes no difference. Sony no doubt would tell me charger or port is broken and use returns process but when turned off phone will always charge... It also has no problems with the laptop flashing it or fastboot mode from turned off so this is no hardware fault with my lead, ports or charger. I've reflashed kernel on its own with flashtool, also fully without wiping and fully with wiping NO DIFFERENCE.
So the only thing that will fix this is SUS repair function, every couple of days? Very stupid bug worse than the 100% charge with .295. You can no longer rely on the Xperia as a main phone in my opinion unless your prepared to carry a laptop and internet connection with you everywhere. What a disappointment.
Further to this I have just repaired and even that hasn't done anything. Just used flashtool to revert back to ICS software and my charger is immediately recognised on first boot. I will now update using SUS again to .199 and I bet it will still work for a couple of days and then start to trip out again. Where the hell can this bug be lingering though if it can avoid factory resets and full SUS software repair?? What can downgrading reset that nothing else can... Very confused and disgruntled now. I suspect you could also revert to 4.1 with same effect but I just had ICS firmware handy so used that. I will test 4.1 next time
ICS only works. It gave me a update to 9.1.A.1.141 over the air so I did it and it broke my port again. I flashed 9.1.A.1.141 manually and its still broke - that was the software I was using before 4.3 and it worked fine. Is it seriously possible that these 4.3 updates have done something so bad to my phone that only the software it originally came with will work properly because thats how it appears to me now. I can't charge while turned on or have my laptop recognise the Xperia T internal storage unless using 7.0.A.1.303. Phone about to get thrown against a wall I think.
Maybe your battery power control is ruined.

Thanks for suggestion but i'm not so sure. I mean it charges fine turned off, it charges fine on 7.1.A.303. And another symptom is not being able to connect my PC to phone. Surely if it was just battery/power control it wouldn't charge from PC but would still connect and allow me to transfer files. I also don't have any of the random reboots the OP had. I'm so worried to send this in for repair. Last time they did a software update and sent it back with original problem. Then they fixed 2nd attempt but caused some cosmetic damage and it didn't last long. Then my operator replaced it as I said I lost trust in the repair centre. I only got this one Nov last year and already it's having problems... I'm either unluckyist T owner going or they have some serious issues.

Very unlucky... my T is one year old, I installed every kind of rom/upgrade/downgrade and still works flawlessly.
Could they have replaced your old phone with a regenerated unit?
Your USB port is ok, that's for sure.
Like any other electronic component, a fried power control could behave in many different ways.
Yours could have problem when it has to work with a firmware that manage the power in a certain way.
Even when you connect to your PC, the power control of the battery is called to manage the power coming from the computer: in fact the phone usually charges during any operation with the PC.
And this explains why the phone charges fine when turned off.
Now the question is: which is the power control ruined? The one of the battery or are there other power controls?
Let's make it clear: this is just my hypothesis
If you don't trust in reparing service, why don't you try to repair by yourself?
You need a screwdriver (for only one screw) and a guitar plectrum to open up the back cover.
That's all, it's very easy... on internet there are some video guides... but remember that this way you loose your warranty!
Device: HTC One (M7) Stock ROM
A few days ago, my never rooted, stock firmware, no unlocked boot loader, no custom ROM, never dropped HTC One (M7)'s battery died. Plugging in the charger had no effect, absolutely NOTHING. Tried 6 different cables and 9 different locations to charge it, nothing. Waited a while, dying in desperation. Then after so much of panic, I plugged it again, and randomly it started charging. But the charging had a loop - showed a bright orange LED with the power symbol on a battery for about 5 seconds, then a dim orange LED with the green battery charging, and a number, for about 10 seconds. The loop kept repeating. Eventually I could turn it on till the (incredibly low capacity) battery could live. So I did about 10 resets to it, and the situation would not improve.
Since my phone just decided to do this to me just before a long journey of mine, I was quite upset, and eventually infuriated to the limits. I decided to take it along and try different things to it - tried, tried, cleaned the ports, searched the net, nothing.
One fine day it decided to break the loop - now it charged, but only when off.
And today again its started the loop.
And here I am, begging for some help. I'm starting to hate this device now. Please help me.. :crying:
P.S. : I played a lot of Clash of Clans on the phone - it heated up a lot. Hope the info helps (Possible corrupted overheating charge instructions of the phone, etc.)
please help i love this phone cant lose this at all

I am having the same exact problem right now. its very annoying. I have to drain the whole battery to charge it again. and its in that loop that you mentioned. plus it does not charge when you put it on charge when its on. it doesnt even have that charging light. it only charges itself if its off and if there is no battery left, i have to put it on charge by draining the whole battery by using apps and stuff and i am so pissed right now i cant find a solution to this. Did you find a solution on how to get this fixed?
I am currently having a similar problem where I can only charge my phone if off. Hopefully someone can help!

I have found a solution to this. I am really happy since i am able to use my phone again.
Let me state what exactly i was going through.
I had to use the phone till it actually turned off completely consuming the whole battery and it was very frustrating because i had to deliberately use the phone till the phone shuts down and charge it. And once it started charging, it has a weird stupid way of charging. It shows that its charging and it goes off, comes back on and shows its charging, then it goes off... When it goes off the red light goes away...then comes back on.
I've read other threads and forums about people having the same issue. Others say they're not even able to connect their phones to the computer. You all should try connecting your phone to a computer and check if its able to transfer data.
If that happens, then you're saved. Because this really worked out for me.
Now, i'm not really sure what kind of bug this is, but here's how you fix this.
If you're able to transfer data to your phone, you must browse your phone on the computer and copy a file (or a couple of files - in my case i transferred a movie folder that had a couple files in it)
And guess what..i put it on charge and started charging like normal oh my god i was happy as hell
Thanks. I hope the same works for you all, people have been saying you have to clean the charging port but not really

I'm not sure how are you NOT able to get it connected to your computer. Since i connected it to the computer, it didn't start charging but it allowed me to transfer files. And so i did. You might wanna change the cable and check if its letting you connect to your PC.
So far its working perfectly alright. I don't have a problem as such. And wait, you could install a file manager and move a couple files around. Maybe delete some files or download some files and try.
I Hope it works for everyone who's getting this problem. I know its not a hardware problem and HTC support sucks BIG time. i don't even have htc headquarters so i couldn't get it replaced, bad. but if your phone is under warranty you must get it replaced

Hi! so you are saying that if i move some files from the computer to the phone it might get fixed? Well, i cant plug it to the computer, it just doesnt recognize the phone, if i plug it when the phone is on the pc doesnt show anything and the phone doesnt charge or anything, just like when trying to charge it with the ac charger, if i plug it with to the pc with the phone off then it shows a message that doesnt recognize the device, and the phone doesnt even charge aswell...
Right now the only fix i have found is to solve the problem of having to drain the battery in order to charge the phone, now i fixed it unticking the fastboot option in energy, now i can charge with any % but the phone must be off. Btw it gets a lot of heat while charging it this way... idk if its normal, i heard that because the aliminium case it gets more heat than normal plastic cases.
Thanks for your reply, ill try to connect the phone to the pc a few more times.
Hello guys , , I have the same problem , charging the M7 (On stock rom), I have tried many things ,roms and kernels , currently I managed to make it charge with the screen on with some conditions..
I installed SLIM ROM from their site (4.4.4) . To charge the phone with screen on I have to check "screen on while charging" (because if the screen goes off it stops charging /same thing if somebody is calling me )
To Charge my phone I just need to Reboot normally and charge it ( if you install this rom Activate the sound for the ac plug/unplug so you can know if it is charging well or not )
Eaven if i have to do these things its better then the OFF mode .
Hope It helps .
HTC M7 Only charges when it's off and the laptop can't recognize the device.
Hello, I've had this HTC M7 since last year. It's worked perfectly until a couple days ago.
The phone will not charge when it's on. It only charges when it's off. Also, my laptop won't recognize the device. I've tried with a couple different AC chargers, but no luck.
Sometimes my phone says "CAN'T CHARGE WHILE IN USB HOST MODE," and I don't know how to take it out of USB Host mode? I'm guessing this is a problem with the software. Before this happened the phone worked flawlessly.
Any help, please??!!

It can sometimes be caused by a defective usb port on the phone, does your port looks damaged? Boot your phone in safe mode and check if its doing the same thing.
I've already done that and it doesn't work.
I really don't know what the issue is? I mean this is a perfectly working unlocked HTC M7.
I've turned if off multiple times and even wiped it clean twice. I don't know what else it could be.
I mean it's been working perfectly since I got it.
But as I mentioned earlier it will only charge while the phone is off. And my laptop can't recognized it either.
It only appears and "Unknown Device."
But even when it is off it charges for a bit and then it completely stops.
Then you see the battery logo and then it starts charging again. But it repeat that same process throughout the whole time. So, it can never reach to 100%.
As I've mentioned before I've never really had this problem.
I've been looking for hours on the internet and so far nothing seems to work. There was an app I saw on to access engineer mode or something, but for some reason I can't use that app because it says that I'm missing another application.
Any thoughts??

I have the same problem, it can't charge, PC don't recognize when the phone is on android, but when i boot into recovery everything work fine (charge or data move to PC), so far i could't find any way better.
Hi,
had same problem.
Clearing system cache helped in my case.
Related cause for the trouble seem to be a couple of OTA upgrades I did recently.
(I was on a pretty old version.)
I noticed that there was something wrong while upgrading.
Even though the phone was connected to the charger while the whole upgrade process,
battery level went down...
The following procedure is your own risk!
Be careful not to choose any options that wipe all your data or factory reset your device.
This is how I cleared the system cache :
Boot into recovery (hold both volume-down and power buttons for ~30 seconds until menu shows - )
Press volume-down to choose RECOVERY and press power button.
Be patient ~60 seconds until menu appears.
Choose wipe cache partition and press power button.
Choose reboot system and press power button.
I hope this helps you.
Thanks

Alright, I noticed about 3-4 days ago that I was waking up in the morning to almost no charge gained on my phone. I figured my computer turned off or something and my phone just didn't get charged via the USB port. I've now realized that when using specific USB cords (Only one out of 5 that I have works without this issue at the moment), my phone charges for about 5 minutes and then goes into this weird mode where it displays the clock time as a screensaver sort of screen and it stops charging my phone WHILE being plugged in.
As soon as I unlock my phone, I see a steering wheel icon at the top left in my notifications that says my phone is in car mode. Before I can pull down to see what it is or go into the menu settings to see if I can disable it, it turns off and disables again. I went through my ROM toolbox and found no signs of "Car" or "Car Mode" applications installed since I remember seeing "Car" in most rom installations.
It's becoming very frustrating because most times, I plug in my USB cord and my phone begins to charge and then 2-3 minutes later it just stops and goes into that mode. Sometimes it's instant and sometimes it won't work at all. I don't think it's an internal phone problem though because I have a cheap USB cord I found in my closet that is flawless and doesn't bring me this issue.
What could this be? Is my HTC One on it's last legs or what? I don't have my upgrade for another year so I'm really hoping this isn't too serious. The USB cords I do own are in great condition and wouldn't all suddenly stop working at once, so I see no reason to blame those. If anyone is wondering, I'm using CyanogenMod 11 right now, but this is a fresh installation and previously was using a very stable ARHD 6.1 GPe ROM. I also don't think the rom's I'm using have anything to do with it.
I don't know much about this stuff so I'll just leave some other information if it's needed. I have the SuperCID thing done, my phone is rooted and my bootloader is unlocked obviously along with having S-Off. I'm also using TWRP's latest version.
Any help would be really, really appreciated...
Also, to add onto what I said about the screensaver/car mode:
When I unlock my phone while being plugged in and the car mode turns off, my phone doesn't go back to charging unless I un-plug the USB cord and re-plug it in. This is when it usually begins to stop charging seconds after putting it in.

I've been researching it and found a few similar issues and apparently there's no fixes for it. I'm more or less stuck with this for another year until my upgrade. There's a small fix for it but it's a pain in butt to remember:
I have to turn my HTC One off, plug it into the USB for charging and then turn it on and it'll charge correctly.
I've also noticed a major decline in battery life as well. I went from 78% to 71% in 10 minutes a bit ago. Really disappointing seeing as how I've already done so much to this phone I probably couldn't even sell it let alone have a conversation with HTC about it since I've killed any kind of warranty for it so badly.
Damn damn damn damn damn.

I've had the phone for over a year and I don't have warranty. Would there be a manufacturer warranty for this?
I guess this issue isn't fixable and I'm just screwed. Any suggestions how I could get a new phone without an upgrade for a good deal or something? God damn it.
Hey guys, i had some serious trouble here. My Z3C is now bricked (I'm not sure whether it's softbricked or hardbricked). The Rom is stock. I plugged the charger (magnetic) from 5pm and I went out for some works, and 3 hours late I returned home and found out that my device couldn't turn on. I've tried many ways like combo VL+ and Power, or Reset Button, but useless. Can you help me with this, thank you so much.

does your pc recognize the phone when you plug it in w/ usb?
if not, then the phone is most likely dead and your best bet is to take it back to the store for a repair/replacement

well i've brought it to the store already. They connected it to PC, then the Sony/Xperia logo appeared on the phone, but the device still .... I don't understand, I used the stock ROM, no root, no bootloader,... but this brick problem still happened. And after scavenging the internet for solution, I found out that there were many users had this problem like I did.
hopefully my device will be fixed without being teardown or the waterproof ability will become weak.

well if the phone responds when connected to a pc then it's not dead, which is good, so you can try to reflash the stock rom with sony Emma

Well my phone is now awake, after a electrical stimulus process. The technician said my device's power was weak. Maybe I should buy a Z2a to use along with my Z3C, well, for precaution purpose.
And I used the stock rom all the time, and I still didn't understand what've caused this problem. But thanks for your great help man. I am really appreciate your support.
I'm really curious, what magnetic cable were you using when this happened?
Was it some cheap magnetic cable or Magnector X or some other?
what the heck is "electrical stimulus process"?
mine gone dead just after 2 weeks of usage. the service center mentioned that it was the motherboard and battery failure. so i guess the best part of the phone is the lcd, huh?

What he probably meant is: if your battery is completely drained so that the circuit of the phone does not even recognize the battery anymore as to allow/start charging, it often helps when you connect the battery for a short time (few seconds) directly (without the circuit in between) to a power source/charger. This bings it back to life and charging it in a controlled manner via the phone charging circuit is possible again.
Well, in my case, my Z3C battery wasn't completely drained. I charged it when it was 17%, then I went out for about 3-4 hrs, and when I came home, the problem happened.
The store technicians figured out that my battery was hibernate, so they used high voltage electric to charged it, then it came back to life, just like we use electric shock method to save people.
Does it make any difference what is the charger?
well, I have just had the exactly the same problem.
And I can tell the magnetic charger cause this. I plug in with 65% battery left ( I charge it overnight as a habit) and In a morning it's completely dead ( like anyone who has this problem ). I was so panic ...
It could be the magnetic charge draw the juice out of the battery and make it completely drained instead of pump power to the battery, I guess.
can you please specify how to bring it back to life please !! thank you !!!!
