Hi guys. I'll be heading to South America(Uruguay) in two weeks. I have heard that I can use a SIM card down there and get service on my phone. How exactly does this work? I would assume the G2 is unlocked since it's a 4G phone. I had heard the FCC wanted Verizon to unlock all 4G phones for GSM purposes. So my question would be, how do I make this work? I planned on borrowing a very old T-Mobile phone (MyTouch) and popping in a SIM card from ATCEL. It's in Spanish but here's the phone on that site. It states GSM and LTE I think.

Would I just have to buy a SIM and pay two weeks of service? I'd plan on using a stock ROM like XDABEBBS or Steel Droid. Or should I focus on using something from CM?

Exactly. VS980 is full unlocked for any GSM network. I live in Russia, so I bought this phone to use in my Russian operator "MobileTeleSystems", so it works perfectly. You should take microSIM card. But LTE will not work, only 3G.
I can live with that for a couple of weeks. So what would I need to do? Just power off the phone and insert the new SIM card or do I have to factory reset? I'll be running a stock rooted Rom.

No factory reset needed. Just turn the phone off, switch SIM cards, turn it back on and you should have service. I think I had to enter APN settings to get 3g data working properly in Honduras, but voice and text worked fine with no special settings. You should be able to Google the settings for ATCEL if you need to

Thanks so much! Just did a quick search and I think this is all I'll need. If not, I'm sure they'd know down there, right?

Yeah that looks like all you need. If ATCEL had any other weird requirements I'm sure they'll be able to let you know when you get down there, assuming you find someone who speaks English. You might want to download the Spanish language packs for Google Translate before you head down there if you don't speak Spanish

I am using the VS980 here in Mexico with good results. The only other thing I can think of that may give a problem is if for some reason you are stuck at the activation screen, then use this workaround: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2522646

Hey XDA - I've been a browser forever, but I just signed up;
because I am in diiiiiiiiire need of some help.
I'm really sorry this has to be my first thread.
I promise I'm not a troll, and I promise I'll contribute as
much as I possibly can!
I have a situation I am in -
I currently have a Nexus One, on T-Mobile U.S.
It's completely stock, no hacks or roots, mods or anything.
To make a long story short - I'll be switching phones and providers soon (Evo), but I would like to give this phone to my girlfriend, who happens to live in the United Kingdom. She's on the O2 network, and has all the data/plan stuff covered already, I just need to get the phone working for her when she pops in her SIM card.
From what I've gathered, it seems like the Nexus One WILL work on O2 with both 2G and 3G speeds, if this is true; can someone verify?
"O2 use 2100MHz for 3G and 900/1800MHz for GSM (2G - Voice/GPRS).
The Nexus One supports these frequencies for both services."
Also, I've never unlocked, or rooted a phone before. This phone would NEED to be unlocked for her to be able to use it, right? Is it possible to unlock a phone without rooting it? I really am new to all of this. She's not a power user, so I'd like her to keep the stock build and get all the updates. Is that possible? To unlock the phone and keep everything stocked?
Can someone maybe help with that? Or should I just follow one of those guides to "unlock and flash the rom" guides that I've found all over the internet? I really want to just keep everything stock for her, with the exception of the phone being unlocked.
Whatever happens, will the Android market still be working for her?
Does anyone know how Google Maps would work on the phone for her, in the UK?
I'm basically in love with the girl, and we're trying to do everything we can to make the best of a long distance relationship. The main reason I want her to have an android phone (mine) is for her to be able to use Fring with me, and Google Chat - so I'd really hope those apps worked in the UK.
Any help on unlocking this bad boy is much appreciated.
Thank you XDA,
You guys are awesome - and I have all the respect in the world for you.
Hey Dude,
my US Nexus is working fine on O2 here in germany and there are no problems with 3G and 2G, so no worries. And afaik no Nexus One is sim-locked.
Hope this helps.

That actually does help a lot - but,
did you purchase the unlocked Nexus from Google?
I can't confirm, but I've heard that both are different,
the T-Mobile version being sim locked.
I also have the APN settings from O2 U.K already
- I'm aware of that part.
Hi, I am on o2 in the uk and the nexus works Just fine (2g & 3g). Also, I thought the nexus wasn't sim locked, I certainly never had to unlock mine.

Was yours purchased unlocked though?
Thank you
Europe uses the same bands in every country. Its a direction from the European Union so every phone bought in Europe will work in every country in Europe.
Coincidentally, T-MO US uses the same bands so you won't have any trouble with it. I have the T-MO US version here in Romania and works fine on 2G and 3G.
I don't think its sim locked. You should put an att sim in it, although you're only gonna get 2G. But that will show you if its sim locked or not.
I am pretty sure that although Google were selling the Nexus with a T-Mobile option there are no sim- or netlocked Nexus Ones - simply for the fact that Google did not want that. That is also how Vodafone handles the Nexus distribution here in germany: There is an option for a bundle with a contract and the Nexus you get with it is not sim- or netlocked.
Also, to answer another question of you: Yes, your gf will be able to use all functions (market, maps, etc.) without any rooting-action necessary.

Siggi : Thank you also for that bit of information, you guys really just took a huge weight off my chest.
1. It will be fully functional on the provider you specified.
2. There is no such thing as SIM-locked Nexus.
3. It's fun using Fring video to show people places.
just for our your clarification: EVERY NEXUS ONE SOLD IS UNLOCKED, and, IT WILL WORK IN THE UK.
Settled.

I also got a Nexus One from Google US and it's working without any problems in germany.
Just remember, even though your Nexus One is unlocked, if you are on contract with T-Mobile and you cancel early, you will have to pay an ETF.
hey guys quick question
i brought a at&t nexus1 off ebay. the seller mentioned it will can and only work on tmobile 2g [i am t-mobile],
my question is if i factory reset/wipe the nexus1, does it lose complete compability with tmobile?
Factory reset only wipe data. you can still use the phone with tmobile
and still 2g only
so flashing roms, kernels, recoveries and all that good stuff, in the end i will still be able to activate the phone aka [ google sign in at the beginning activation ] with a tmobile sim card?

Yes. Just keep in mind that you'll need to stick with american firmware. With different ROM, you can even use 3g, but it depends on you provider too.

There is two version of Nexus 1, one made for Tmobile frequency and one made for AT&T. While they are both sim unlock, you can put sim card from either carrier into the other and it will work as far as phone calls. For 3G support a Tmobile sim in a AT&T N1 will only work with 2G not 3G.

I suppose that it is only T-Mobile's fault, not phone's. Phone itself do support 3g, and I do suppose that T-Mobile has just disabled 3g on the SIM or on the modem's side.

How is it T-mobile's fault? Their 3G work on a certain frequency. AT&T 3G work on a certain frequency. If you buy a phone that does not work on your carrier's frequency, it's the buyer's fault*.
*Nothing against the OP in this post. He knew he bought a AT&T N1 and know 3G don't work on T-mobile.

yeah lol i dont even have data on my phone, so 2G / 3G doesnt even matter to me,
im just worried if it i factory/hard reset the phone, that the phone will "lock" back on AT&T.
but imo, since the N1 is carrier unlocked by nature, it will stay that way no matter what i do right?

You cannot change the operating frequency of the phone - it's a hardware limitation.
Maybe if you flash a new modem it can run on Verizon.

It'll be good if you actually read before making false statements and insisting on them.
Read the FAQ, question 13.
Nexus has 2 HW variants, with 2 different sets of 3 frequencies for each variant. The variants differ in HW and use exactly the same SW, including modem.

Can you tell me (or better yet show me) what the Sprint HTC One compares to lets say a Sprint GS3 or other Sprint LTE device with regards to LTE reception. Really what I would like to see is the RSRP (dBm) values of each device sitting side by side. I myself have an HTC EVO LTE and love the (almost) all metal construction that HTC did with the phone. The one thing I do not like however, is the LTE performance. 3G is great and on par with other devices, but I want to make sure HTC fixed this in the HTC one before I buy it.
Thanks in advance!

Wow, they actually put earbuds in with this phone. I haven't gotten a pair of earbuds with a new phone from Sprint since my Touch Pro (Maybe the Touch Pro2).
I was actually wondering how it works with roaming. Is it possible you can force it to roam for a moment? Or is that a root only function (been on a rooted phone too long). I don't expect LTE to roam, but I also don't recall seeing any info about a 2g/1x radio onboard. There's a little get-away I go to often in the summer that has no Sprint coverage and hoping I'm not bringing a paperweight every time I go.
Is the phone unlocked? It has a slot for a microsim, correct?

Can you try the following dialer codes to see if they work?
##DEBUG# (##33284#)
##DATA# (##3282#)
*#*#INFO#*#* (*#*#4636#*#*)
If DEBUG works, can you see if there is an “LTE Engineering” menu to view the RSRP/RSRQ values? These values are also in the “Phone information” menu if the INFO code works.
If the INFO code does not work, would you mind downloading the following app?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mangelow.network
Basically, it’s a shortcut to the “Phone information” menu that you would find through INFO, but if they killed the dialer code, this might be the only way to access it (assuming the menu itself is still there).
I’m sorry, I know this is kind of a lot, but a lot of people are going to be eager to find out if they can use this phone for field testing to see if it’s a better RF performer than the EVO LTE. Thanks in advance!

Hello. Some one try to flash radio firmware from verizon sgs4(it has unlocked gsm) ? it work for nexus but vice verca
This method DOES NOT work. Sprint BLOCKS US GSM carriers. To get an international unlock you need to call sprint and ask for one. At this time there is NO way to get US GSM signal on the sprint S4.
EDIT: Apparently this will make your phone unable to connect to a femtocell. Be careful
Do not try this mod. It will mess up your phone and how it connects to the Sprint Airave.

There is another thread that is similar to this for unlocking the sim. I tried it, and possible messed my phone up. I was getting slow 3g speeds and mobile data drop outs. I fixed my issue by doing a complete factory reset/ clearing NVRAM. This is how I did it:
Dial ##786#
Choose Reset
Enter MSL
Here is the thread I mentioned just in case one of you wants to look at it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2282683
##786# as far as I know will restore your phone to stock .
##72786# should reset your network settings. Just make sure you are in a working 3G coverage area or have a WiFi connection or it wont re-activate. This method does not put your phone back to stock...just reactivates it on the network.
Sorry for the unusable info...
But i got this news from Sprint Htc One thread, that they are able to unlocked the device by simply rooting the phone and sending a line in terminal...
Is it possible to do this with ours?

5. Type "am start com.redbend.vdmc/com.htc.omadm.test.TestMainActivity" (excluding quotation marks)
6. You will get menu on your HTC
7. In that menu, select "API", then scroll down 'till almost end and select "simlock"
8. Reboot the phone and hopefully it would accept GSM SIM
9. Enter *#*#4636#*#* in your dialer
10.In the phone information section(the first one) set preferred network type to something that is GSM specific: "WCDMA Preferred", for example. The phone will switch to GSM mode

I just picked up a used verizon G2 to use on the Straight Talk service. First issue. I pulled the sim card from my old straight talk phone and put it in the G2. It instantly said unknown sim but, when i restarted the phone i had service. Problem is, i still have the unknown sim icon and cant seem to use LTE. Second issue. im stuck on 4.4.2 because it will not allow me to download any system updates. Im hoping there is a way to manually update. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you want to update hook up the phone to a windows pc and install the verizon software updater that is built into the flash memory when you plug it in. It will download and apply the Lolipop update. You should figure out what straight talk sim you have because it could be a verizon one, but most likely it's an at&t one so you'll need to edit your apn settings.
What provider is your Straight Talk SIM running off of? T-Mobile? AT&T?
The Verizon G2 only has LTE bands 4 and 13. B13 is Verizon-only, while B4 is used by multiple carriers.
If T-Moible, B4 is the primary band, but if you are in a rural area that TMO refarmed, LTE will be on B2 instead.
If AT&T, their primary LTE band is B5, but there are some select areas that have it on B4 also.
The "Unknown SIM" icon is because the Verizon ROM detects a non-Verizon SIM card. I'm sure there are ways to get rid of it via rooting, or just flash a custom ROM. If your Straight Talk is going through T-Mobile, there's a T-Mobile ROM in the dev forum that adds some TMO functionality like Wifi Calling.
I was able to upgrade to Lollipop using the verizon software and my pc so thanks for that!
The sim I am using is an AT&T straight talk sim. Do they have a sim just for verizon LTE networks?

For new lines, you can stick your phone's IMEI into ST's BYOP checker and if it checks out, you can order a Verizon LTE SIM. For existing lines, probably easier to just call up CS and ask.
I just ordered a verizon LTE sim card from straight talk. They transfered my number to a new sim once before, I'm sure they can do it again. If not, I can live with a new number to have a working phone again.

ccross13126, how did this all turn out? Are you able to use the verizon vs980 LG G2 on Straight Talk with 4g data speeds (using vzw towers)?
I am reading all kinds of conflicting stories. Some say it'll work, but 3g speeds only. BUT, it appears that MAYBE the VS980 can now use verizon 4g towers . . maybe in the last few months. Can you confirm? THANKS in advance. I have a rooted Verizon LG G2 (VS980) that I LOVE .. but i would really love to save a few $$$ and use Straight Talk. Thanks again.

I am using the Straight Talk CDMA service on a few of my phones at the moment. I usually use a Nexus 6 but I had to send it in for a problem and have a Verizon LG G2 and a Verizon HTC M8. The sim card works on both of these phones at LTE speeds. At least in my area, Verizon still seems the most reliable for me. It might not be the fastest service but I don't have issues with missed texts and dropped calls like I do with some other services I have tried.
Hope this helps.
