Used Verizon G2 questions - Verizon LG G2

I just picked up a used verizon G2 to use on the Straight Talk service. First issue. I pulled the sim card from my old straight talk phone and put it in the G2. It instantly said unknown sim but, when i restarted the phone i had service. Problem is, i still have the unknown sim icon and cant seem to use LTE. Second issue. im stuck on 4.4.2 because it will not allow me to download any system updates. Im hoping there is a way to manually update. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you want to update hook up the phone to a windows pc and install the verizon software updater that is built into the flash memory when you plug it in. It will download and apply the Lolipop update. You should figure out what straight talk sim you have because it could be a verizon one, but most likely it's an at&t one so you'll need to edit your apn settings.

What provider is your Straight Talk SIM running off of? T-Mobile? AT&T?
The Verizon G2 only has LTE bands 4 and 13. B13 is Verizon-only, while B4 is used by multiple carriers.
If T-Moible, B4 is the primary band, but if you are in a rural area that TMO refarmed, LTE will be on B2 instead.
If AT&T, their primary LTE band is B5, but there are some select areas that have it on B4 also.
The "Unknown SIM" icon is because the Verizon ROM detects a non-Verizon SIM card. I'm sure there are ways to get rid of it via rooting, or just flash a custom ROM. If your Straight Talk is going through T-Mobile, there's a T-Mobile ROM in the dev forum that adds some TMO functionality like Wifi Calling.

I was able to upgrade to Lollipop using the verizon software and my pc so thanks for that!
The sim I am using is an AT&T straight talk sim. Do they have a sim just for verizon LTE networks?

For new lines, you can stick your phone's IMEI into ST's BYOP checker and if it checks out, you can order a Verizon LTE SIM. For existing lines, probably easier to just call up CS and ask.

I just ordered a verizon LTE sim card from straight talk. They transfered my number to a new sim once before, I'm sure they can do it again. If not, I can live with a new number to have a working phone again.

ccross13126, how did this all turn out? Are you able to use the verizon vs980 LG G2 on Straight Talk with 4g data speeds (using vzw towers)?
I am reading all kinds of conflicting stories. Some say it'll work, but 3g speeds only. BUT, it appears that MAYBE the VS980 can now use verizon 4g towers . . maybe in the last few months. Can you confirm? THANKS in advance. I have a rooted Verizon LG G2 (VS980) that I LOVE .. but i would really love to save a few $$$ and use Straight Talk. Thanks again.

I am using the Straight Talk CDMA service on a few of my phones at the moment. I usually use a Nexus 6 but I had to send it in for a problem and have a Verizon LG G2 and a Verizon HTC M8. The sim card works on both of these phones at LTE speeds. At least in my area, Verizon still seems the most reliable for me. It might not be the fastest service but I don't have issues with missed texts and dropped calls like I do with some other services I have tried.
Hope this helps.

Verizon Moto X on AT&T

So I'm looking to upgrade but don't want to be stuck in another 2 yr contract. I'm thinking of using Verizon's edge program and getting the moto x and then paying the rest off when my contract is up at the end of the year. I would like to know if its possible to then go with an AT&T sim card and prepaid option in the same phone?
I have read all Verizon 4G phones come sim unlocked. I can't find either if the Verizon version comes with the GSM radios necessary to do this.
Any help on the subject would be great! Really tired of Verizon..

Won't work. Vzw uses Cdma for voice and lte for data. Unless someone proves me wrong, the phone can't do voice calls on att network

The carrier issue aside (see above) you should not even consider upgrading with Edge unless you want to pay for you phone twice. It is a complete rip off.
All newer Verizon phones are gsm unlocked and will be able to do voice and most of them hspa+ data on ATT. Weather the lte will work really depends on the phone and what radios they put in it.

It is possible to use a GSM carrier's sim in Verizon's phones for both voice and data. What would you like as Proof?
I don't have an X yet, but....
I have both Verizon and T-Mobile lines for work. (Verizon for personal).
My T-Mobile phone is a Galaxy S3. When T-Mo started supporting the iPhone, our corp rep swapped my sim to a T-Mo Nano SIM for me.
Since then, I have put my T-Mobile sim into my Verizon iPhone 5, VZW Galaxy S4, VZW BB Z10, VZW BB Q10, and VZW Nokia 928. Doing so works fine for voice, data and text messaging on T-Mobiles network, but at EDGE speeds since these VZW phones don't support the 1700mhz UMTS/HSPA/HSPA+ bands that T-Mo uses. They do support the 1900mhz band that ATT uses, but I don't have an ATT sim handy to pop them in.
Oh, and I did need to use a SIM adapter to convert between nano and micro since only the iPhone 5 uses Nano sim. I do not recall results of trying to SMS, I really don't sms anyway.

I hate seeing this response all the time on Verizon devices. Most modern Verizon LTE phones do GSM just fine. Verizon used to call this being a "World Phone", but really all Verizon phones are world devices now. Galaxy S3/4, Note 2/3, all of Moto's phones, etc.
From the Verizon Moto X specs page:
Network
Network: LTE, CDMA/1xEVDO Rev. A (800/1900 MHz)
Global Network: EDGE/GSM (850/900/1800/1900), HSPA/UMTS( 850/900/1900/2100), HSDPA 42.2 Mbps (Category 20), HSUPA 5.76 Mbps

The Droid Ultra connects to At&t without any modification required:
http://www.droid-life.com/2013/08/22/droid-ultra-can-connect-to-atts-hspa-network-out-of-the-box/
In the past some phones on Verizon with GSM capabilities were software restricted from connecting to US GSM providers.
Since the X works on ATT it should work with a Straight Talk ATT Sim card right?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4
Yes
i think in the past verizon phones were GSM locked for only europe / asia and not US GSM carriers.
i think the moto x, and the droid ultra/maxx/mini are not GSM locked for US.
i just switched from verizon to t-mobile. and my last phone was a droid razr m. i unlocked the radio to be able to use t-mobile for a week before my moto-x came, and it DOES work on at&t / t-mobile.
in this case it supported at&t / t-mobile on edge and voice. with 1900mhz hspa+ at&t 3g (and refarmed t-mobile band). no LTE support.
i think the xt1060 is the verizon moto -x and it doesnt havef support for t-mobile HSPA + 1700/2100 AWS or the t-mobile or at&t LTE bands.
so if you bought a verizon moto x, and used it on at&t in the future you'd only get hspa+ 1900mhz at&T "4G". and edge/voice. but it should work fine.
I can confirm that putting my wife's iPhone 5 nano-sim into my Verizon Moto X does work, and I get H+ (7-8mbit) speeds.
Okay so the next question would be, does this also apply to Sprint's Moto X? I hope it does but I am not holding my breath.

i don tthink sprint has GSM unlocked by default. you'd have to find a way to unlock it, which from the sounds of it on this forum from other posters is not easy. probably have to be a sprint customer and say you are going on a trip to europe etc...
Maxx works...ish
I got a T-Mobile SIM for my VZW Droid Maxx (same chipset as the Moto X). With no changes to any settings it gets voice and text, and after manually inputting the T-Mobile APN I picked up H+ and the 1900 MHz 4G in my area. There's an article on Android Central with pictures of a Droid Ultra on a GSM network (I think AT&T).
That said, Verizon's tech support maintain that their unlocked phones aren't allowed to use any non-Verizon US carrier. They also said that if I take a U.S. T-Mobile SIM card roaming outside the US it will work there. The last generation of carrier locks were based on the nationality of the SIM card, not the tower, so that doesn't make much sense. Further reason to question anything tech support tells you.
I have a Verizon moto x and I placed my Att nano Sim in and I can only seem to get hspa+ not LTE. Other than that everything else seems to work fine.

I think you would get LTE if you unlock the bootloader and flash the att modem files. I think some people with the Dev edition ultra maxx flashed the att X radio and it enabled LTE.

I put a T-mobile SIM in my stock 16GB Verizon Moto x. Here is what works and doesn't.
First off, 4G works! in the South Jersey area and it is Blistering fast, I have exceeded 40MB speed test downloads twice, Several in the high 30s and I am avg in mid 20s. Uploads are averaging 20+/- . Compared to Verizon this is like comparing Fios to 1999 era dial up. the best I ever got on Verizon 4G was 14 download but average between 4 and 9 !
The Network notification switches a lot between 4G, "H" mode, whatever that is, just bars and another which I didn't catch quick enough to read ?
Battery has been amazing compared to my galaxy Nexus, I got 7.5 hours of Actual "Screen on Time" which included some GPS use and an hour of music streaming total phone up time was 34+ hours. How long it will perform like this is anyone's guess, today i got about 6.5 of Screen on time. I hope this inst a trend
Now for the bad news - Using it as a Phone. Incoming calls are fine but, making outgoing is a Pain in the A$$.
When I dial a number, (which is a hassle on this KitKat dialer) it often goes to the home screen or back to the dialer. The Call Fails. I am not sure if my dialer is buggy or its a compatibility problem. the KitKat Dialer on the Moto X is an exorcise in futility. Google are you listening? Why reinvent the wheel. All I want in my Dialer is a Number Pad! and a phone book.
When I Open dialer I see Recent calls up top, the whole middle section says all contacts and is otherwise blank, the bottom has the number pad icon, History and settings dots.
Clicking the number pad icon enlarges the bottom section, which then goes all white and removes the three icons. I have to then click the back arrow and re-click the number pad icon to bring it up the actual dialer. .
At this time I can dial. and then the call always fails on the first attempt. Sometimes it takes several attempts to go through.
When I click send on the dialer the 4G disappears and I am left with just the bars. they come back when call is done but sometimes take a few minutes to do so.
If you Kill the dialer app or swipe it away, coming back to it you will have the same issues when trying to get the number pad (two attempts) if you dont, the number pad will open on first attempt. but the calls will still fail on the first try.
I also cant use the internet when in a call, whether WiFi is on or off. Is this a T-mobile problem? I could use the net in Verizon when in a call when on 4G or WiFi
The Data is set to global mode but I have tried both the other settings. On boot up I get a warning saying the SIM is not recognized which I just swipe away.
I am also having this problem. After making a call, the music player and the phones "volume" aspects cease to work., Meaning, I get no sound out of the phone, Music, notifications alarms etc.. This happens almost every time and the only fix is a reboot
I disabled all Verizon Bloat and a lot of Moto Bloat as well This could be causing some of the bugs? But i have tested several different configurations all with the same outcomes.
Hope this helps and puts an end to the - Will it work or not questions. There seem to be a lot of Net Know it all's that flat out say a Verizon Moto x wont work with a T-Mobile SIM or some other undocumented "fact"

Verizon and Walmarts Straight Talk??

I have a LG G2 and I am no longer under contract to Verizon, so I just pay VZW month to month for my service.
My questions here are:

Would I still have the same coverage (4G) area on Straight Talk?
Thank you

I looked into this a while back, since it sounded so wonderful in the commercials. I don't think Straight Talk offers any 4G service, but I could be wrong. It may be available on their GSM towers. Either way, if you follow the link below for "bring your own phone," then click on CMDA, the next page states BYOP does not work on 4G phones.

I seem to remember them selling a 3G Samsung S3 when I was looking into their service. That kind of put me off of them.

You can get a LTE sim with ATT now on ST. Don't know if you can make it work in a VZW g2, but it should work fine in the ATT g2.
Okay, correction to my post. If you want vzw towers on st you have to have only vzw towers if you have a CDMA only phone. You can fflash to their sprint based service and only have sprint service (probably, not sure if they have donors to hack). Their sim networks are Att/T-Mobile. I haven't heard of anybody flashing to the st vzw towers with a vzw sim equipped phone and using one of their sims. That might be useful if you were in a place that regularly has simbased services and occasionally went to the boonies- you could just switch which service was active assuming you get better speed or home coverage on the sim service. Also useful for international (read: not north American) roaming.

I realize that this is an old thread but I just switched to Straight Talk from Verizon and thought I would share this. After the switch (I kept my number from Verizon) my phone still shows Verizon Wireless on the lock screen, still says VZWInternet for my APN settings and still shows that I am getting 4GLTE. I am actually on Straight Talk service though as I have my SIM from ST in my phone. I didnt have to use an ATT sim or anything. I registered CDMA on the Straight Talk site before I switched my phone number over. Hope this is useful to anyone thinking about switching over.
Verizon is a straighttalk's carrier so basically your phone is still working under Verizon wireless.

Just to shed a little light on this, while Straight Talk might operate on VZW towers in some regions, VZW does not authorize straight talk to use phones like the LG G2. One of the powers of CDMA is they can pre-approve select serial numbers for certain carriers, thus VZW knows every single phone ever manufactured for their network and can selectively choose which can be authorized to connect. Thats why you have to go through all the crazy phone cloning to get CDMA phones to look like authorized devices.
Anyway, ST operates on both CDMA and GSM in certain markets. When operating on GSM they utilize AT&T. The LG G2 can only connect to ST if you are using the native unlocked GSM mode. Thats right, all Verizon LG G2 phones are GSM unlocked. So if Straight Talk offers a GSM service through ATT in your area then you can use Straight Talk. If you are trying to connect to Straight Talk's CDMA service (verizon towers) it will not work. Of course you can also use your G2 on any GSM carrier, so T-mobile is also a good player here as they offer some pretty attractive plans, namely their $30/month 5GB/100minute plan. If you have a google voice number you can use Hangouts to place calls that count against data and not minutes, thus you have an Unlimited voice plan with 5GB data for $30/month.

Er, no. "Phone cloning" was necessary for using devices on older 3G-only MVNOs, but it's no longer the case now that Verizon uses SIM cards. (as do many Verizon MVNOs, like Straight Talk, Pageplus, etc)
As long as the G2 is in good standing (IMEI/ESN not blacklisted due to non-payment/stolen phone/etc), you can use it on ST. All you need to do is request a Verizon SIM from ST CS, pop it in the phone, and go. The $45 for Unlimited/Unlimited/5GB BYOP plan works fine on Verizon. Hell, as long as you have an activated SIM card, you can even use non-Verizon-approved LTE devices on a Verizon plan as long as it has the necessary LTE bands.
Why are you reviving an old, dead topic with outdated information?

ST will give you a SIM when you sign up, but be sure that it's for the Verizon network.
If you're ordering over the phone, just tell the rep that you want it for Verizon.
If you're doing it in store, make sure you're getting the ST Activation Kit for Verizon. Apparently not all Walmarts carry the ST Verizon kit, so you might have to order over the phone/on ST's website.
Once you get it, just pop it in your Verizon G2 and you're good to go.

What seems so unreal about this is that I'm paying for Verizon service for less than Verizon charges. How the hell does that work for them? Does Verizon just make most of their money roping people into contracts for new phone subsidies? Do they severely deprioritize non VZW customers to the point that ST might be miserable on their network?

There are a few of catches to ST's service, which apply to other Verizon MVNOs as well:
1) Verizon postpaid has roaming on 3rd party networks, while prepaid and MVNOs are limited to Verizon's native network only.
2) Verizon MVNOs have lower priority than Verizon-proper. On congested towers, ST and other MVNOs will have the slowest speeds.
3) Similar to the above, all Verizon MVNOs are capped at 5mbps LTE speeds. So not only do ST/MVNOs have the lowest priority, but even on uncongested towers their speeds are limited.
On the plus side, you get Verizon coverage, the largest data bucket at the $45 price point (5GB), and no additional charges/suspended data after you use your allotment (ST throttles to 64kbps after).
If priority and speeds are important, Verizon Prepaid has unlimited talk+text+2GB data (suspended after unless you pay for more) for $45. Higher priority than MVNOs and no speed restrictions.

At&t note 3 on cricket wireless / aio

I'm planning on buying a note 3 at&t branded because I'd be using it on at&ts network but through cricket wireless. Does anyone have any exp in doing this? Does everything work? And LTE?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
I think you'll be one of the first to test this. Cricket use to be cdma style communication whereas at&t is gsm. I believe at&t just merged aio wireless and cricket thus changing cricket from cdma to gsm. If this is true you won't have any problems whatsoever. Just pop in the SIM and it will probably update the apn settings automatically. You can find the apn settings on crickets website and enter them yourself if it doesn't.
Just to clarify I am already using aio/cricket for months on this device. All will work fine if you have been reading up on aio and cricket merger you would know att is killing off crickets cdma line and will be using GSM, op just make sure you let SM-N900A is UNLOCKED and that you get a sim card and you should be fine. As per 4g/4g lte you may as well go elsewhere you will get 4g/4g lte where available but remember AIO/CRICKET is throttled data, so no matter what you will be limited to a lower speed. If you need any help let me know I've been on aio for months (pre merger to the point I have an aio sim but cricket in the top left).
I'm from the Pittsburgh area but now I'm in savanna Georgia and I've had lte almost the whole way..... I'm on cricket wireless also and I've had no problems with them.... I get lte almost everywhere I go

Not to he offensive but tmobile sucks. Tmobile only has coverage (4g/4g lte) in major cities, aio/cricket runs off of AT&T network so you already get better coverage. Speeds may be throttled but I can do everything off it on these speeds, youtube, milk music, pandora no problems. When I had tmobile I was constantly on "edge"/2g, but on aio/cricket 75% of the time I'm on 4g lte and the rest I'm on 4g. OP unless you plan on never leaving a major city, just get aio/cricket.
I was on AIO for about a month, and now am on the merged Cricket with an Unlocked Note 3 (for another month). The 4g LTE data speed is capped at 8mbps. I have no problem streaming whatever I want. I had Verizon and most of the time I only got around that speed anyway. I looked at about every MNVO and provider for a cheaper way to do smartphones, and for 3 smartphones, I am at only $115 a month total with 2.5gb per line. I put out about $700 on a Note 3 and 2 S4 phones, and am saving about $115 a month on what it would cost me with AT&T or Verizon. The coverage for AT&T in my area is excellent. I have also found that the online chat is very quick and helpful with any questions. So far I am very pleased.
AT&T basically threw out Cricket and merely put the brand onto their existing AIO wireless. Given that there are so many more Cricket stores, it makes sense.
I am looking to purchase a note 4 either with T-Mobile, Verizon, or Att Wireless and use it on Cricket Wireless since you guys have done this with the Note 3. Will I be able to pop the Cricket sim card in and let it update by air or will I have to unlock all of these phones for this to work.. Also any suggestions for mms .. 4g LTE..etc will be appreciated..

If you get the N4 AT&T branded phone and plan to use cricket, you just put in SIM. Within minutes, you will get the configuration message, install and you're ready to go. No unlocking needed. With the Verizon and T-Mobile phones, you'll have to unlock. However, with any phone, unless you are on that branded phones service, you will not get OTA to new OS versions. This is not that big of a deal since you are already on xda, you can just go to your forum and more than likely find a flashable. [emoji3]
Im also doing the same now, just got a ATT note 3 to use it on cricket.. i have a note 3 on sprint but i just switched jobs and dont have reception at all, im trying it and if it works i might go to ATT later on, or who knows i might stay at cricket.. is way cheaper and 8mps is good for what i use it.. 55 per month with 10 GB thats a hell of a deal, I use about 8 to 10 on sprint right now
Wow...
Ctfu, yeah, give me a sweet device with crappy coverage... That makes SOOO much sense? AT&T/Cricket/AIO all they way! Funny stuff, keep it comin'!

I'm not too much of a phone geek, but I just started using my ATT Note 3 on Cricket. My APN settings didn't automatically set with the Cricket SIM, but that was an easy change.
I'd suggest the ATT N4 just because ATT bought Cricket, and they're using the same towers now. All things the same, I think it would be the path of least resistance.
BTW, I was paying $120/mo. for Unlimited everything with a 20% corporate discount with ATT. I was only using an average of 1.8GB per month. That also included a partially subsidized phone every 2 years with a new contract.
Now my bill is $35/mo but I'll have to buy my next phone. I'm only on day 2 of the change, but it's a big deal for me after 14yrs with the same company.

I am currently using a AT&T branded Note 3 on Cricket, switched from Tmobile months ago. No need to unlock a AT&T branded phone or at least I didn't have to with my 3.
You can just put a SIM in and change the APN settings to Cricket's which are available on their website.
I've never had issues with dropped calls or losing data with Cricket. I'm paying 150 a month for 3 lines unlimited calls, texts and 10g data on each line.

Unlock our VzwG2 .

now unlocking is legal does anyone know how to unlock_the Verizon G2
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
The g2 is unlocked
Verizon phone's are all ready unlocked
orupstr become
Do not confuse locked boot loaders with carrier locked devices. Congress says carrier locked phones must be unlockable at the end of a service contract, so they can be transferred for use on another compatible network. This has nothing to do with locked boot loaders. VZW G2 is not carrier locked, but the boot loader is and will remain forever locked.
LG G2 VS980 not detecting/connecting to mobile network..
I am in India at the moment...i have 3 Verizon G2 phones...SIM cards work fine on 2 of them...On the third one...it does not detect the mobile network...sim is detected ,coz it gives no alert...and when i search for networks...the networks are shown...it just doesnt connect to the network...the sim cards work fine in other phones...in the other G2 phones and in a HTC DROID DNA...so its not the sim at fault....
Have tried multiple SIM cards from Vodafone/Loop Mobile/Airtel...none of them work on this particular phone..
What can be the problem ?
Please help me out...otherwise will have to send the phone all the way back to USA..

This generally means either: 1) The ESN/IMEI is blacklisted or 2) The APN information is incorrect.
You can call your carrier to determine if it is blacklisted, or use this website although I don't know if it is international or just in the US

i'm using my VS980 with T-Mobile and works perfectly and getting in some areas up to 40MB Download and 11MB Upload with 4G LTE , the lowes i have seen is 20MB Download and 9 Upload.
I am using vs980 in newzealand. Now it is on global mode and i can call, text,... as normal but i can't use data service. The signal always shows "R" (does that mean Roaming? ) and "H" (HSPA?) and i have already set the correct APN. Can someone help me how to connect data service? THANKS

Latest on activating Lte for att (pure edition)

So I just ordered a pure edition so that I can use it on att. I know previously there had been some issues with making lte work with these pure editions but how is it now? Can I walk into the store and tell them I want a new sim for my phone and will it work fine with the lte bands? I am wondering if this has been resolved from att and moto as of late. Anyone who recently got their phone might know the best answer for this.
@Maknora,
You will not have any problems, at all. That is exactly what I did last week. Took only 10 minutes.
I have a Pure edition on AT&T, haven't had any issues with it.

Does your phone say LTE or 4g LTE for your pure moto x?
It says lte
mine just says LTE
Great. Mine does too now =)
Came from gs2, punched sim card to nano size and had no data. A 5 min online chat where I simply stated problem and provided IMEI solved the problem. Now phone says 4G LTE.
Same here. Took mine in 1 month ago and walked out with LTE. Even though on of the reps kept saying it wouldn't work

Based on your question, is there a difference between "LTE" only and "4G LTE"? Mine says the latter it's a 4G symbol with LTE rotated 90 degrees on the side. Sometimes I do see just 4G only (in a place with a repeater). I also was using LTE Discovery and when it says 4G LTE, the program shows the corresponding LTE band, else it shows HSDPA+.
In another thread, I was trying to find a way to enable the extra bands for the pure, without upgrading to Lollipop. Has anyone figured that out yet?

When you log into at&t.com what devices does at&t show that you have? I never bothered to update the IMEI and it says I have a Motorola Z830, which as best I can tell is not actually even a real handset.
When I first inserted my at&t SIM in my brand new X Pure Edition, it said "4G LTE" but after a reboot (or maybe a few I am not entirely sure), now it just reads LTE, which is what unbranded handsets display for LTE service.
4G LTE is at&t's Branding for LTE rather than an actual difference in technology.
Dan
My device too is listed as a Motorola Z830. Mine always shows data connection as 4g lte, even after many reboots. I am not familiar with the details you mentioned, but most importantly my device seems to work properly. If yours does too then the exact indicator may not matter.

Mine says I have a victara when I check the website. I've been switching between 4 phones lately (Moto X, Nexus 5, iPhone 6, Lumia 830) and LTE works on all of them, all with the same SIM card. I don't understand why some of you are having problems, I've never had an issue no matter what phone I've used.
The problem exists for users coming from non LTE phones. Mine was a galaxy s2.
