It is totally possible, but you'll have to unlock your bootloader, on 4.4.2 there's no way of rooting without doing it

If you can unlock your bootloader, your set! If you can't, not happening. Sorry.
You can try the Chinese fellow who is selling unlock codes, if yours can't be at moto site. 45 dollars. If your phone is on his list.
Good luck!
Thank yall. Ill see what i can do :good:

Im getting my new ATT 32GB Moto X on Monday and after flashing my Samsung Galaxy S3 into the ground I thought I would leave the Moto X running the stock ROM for a while but rooted.
My question is, in reading some of the threads it looks like I will have to re-root after every Kit Kat update pushed out from Motorola, is this the case? Is there a method that will add root privileges back after the phone reboots from the update? Lastly, any suggestion on what root procedure is working the best?

Can we assume you bought the consumer version ? If so, looks like your SOL. Root method only works up to 4.4.
If you bought the DE veraion ? Root is straight forward as unlocking your bootloader , flashing recovery

Yes I did purchase the consumer version so it does look like I am SOL. Thanks for the quick reply.

Please excuse if this has been beaten to death. I've spent the last hour reading and reading an I've just gotten confused. I was heavily into the Android world for quite a while but have been out of it for a couple years. I bought my son a Droid Mini which from what I understand is pretty much the same thing as a Moto X. In the settings menu it says Android Version 4.4 Kernal Version 3.4.42-gfae57e0. I just need to root it. I'm not concerned about flashing ROMs, just need root for an app that requires it. Is it possible or do I need to get a different phone? I must have a root. Again please excuse the noob question but I've gotten a headache trying to make heads or tales of it.

No it is not possible to root 4.4 however you have an option there is a guy in China selling bootlloader unlock codes I bought mine and unlocked there are several threads on this site so check it out. The other option is to return the phone and get one you can root or a dev model.

I guess I'll go that route then. I bought my second hand so returning isn't an option. Can you link me to a thread?
I feel so lost. My last Android two Androids were an EVO and a Droid OG, I feel so lost now. Had a ton of ROMs on those but wow things have changed.

Under Android version it says 4.4. But is also says no software updates are available.... Kernal version says 3.4.42 that makes a difference. Guess the question is do I have 4.4 or 4.4.2. If .2 is the latest it should show under updates correct? Or maybe not since it's a Mini and not an X?

Don't give this guy false hope without reading the OP. He does not have a moto x, He has a droid mini. The droid line cannot be downgraded from 4.4 to 4.2.2, thus his only option is to use the shady Chinese unlockers.

You should get your rooting advice from this area of the forums, it will more closly resemble the options you have available to your device
http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-ultra
VZW droid mini ,ultra, and maxx are all still on 4.4. They cannot be downgraded due to verizon locking the bootloader. You will get confused answers from the moto x owners, as they could downgrade from 4.4 to 4.2.2 and then keep root using some trickery.
While it is true that this trickery would work to on your droid mini if you hadnt yet updated to 4.4, there is no way to revert to 4.2.2 on your device. your best option getting an unlock code from a 3rd party (this voids your warranty)
consider if it is worth it to you
Good luck,
You can't root 4.4 the droid line doesn't have 4.4.2 yet so your on 4.4.
As for the guys being shady selling the code that is absolutely false. Many have bought the code they are very accommodating and helpful. As a matter of fact a few were not able to get the code for what ever reason and were refunded the money. As far as I'm concerned if you want root unlock the boot loader it ain't coming anytime soon.
And further questions should be asked in the ultra section the ultra maxx and mini are the same. The moto x is 99.9% the same but as you can see there are a few differences like they can downgrade 4.4.
As a matter of fact I'm typing this on my maxx running 4.4.2 ported from a moto x. That is what you can do with an unlocked boot loader.
It is possible! I am now the owner of a fully rooted Droid Mini XT1030 running stock 4.4. It took buying a code from the Chinese tab site and a whole lot of help from NWKENT. He should be nominated for some kind of an award. He took the time on a Sunday morning to talk me through it on the phone. He's a saint in my book.
Is the Moto XT1097 with the android version 5.1 able to he downgraded. Thanks for any kind of answers at all. Been looking at different sites and all kind of tutorials. Still haven't found any answer to my questions. Thanks in advanced.
Here is my riddle?
I got a moto XT1097 bought from at&T in America with the 5.1 android version. How do I root it? Is it worth to even downgrade to try and root it that way . I know for a fact the boot loader cannot be unlocked. OEM Is one that can not be unlocked. Thanks for any advice, help, anthing at all. Been wracking and researching away to root it and all of my roads lead to a headache.
The AT&T xt1097 cannot be unlocked. You can root with MOFO if an updated 5.1 image has been made for your device. Since your device cannot be unlocked, you cannot downgrade.

Thanks. I do not have the 5.1 image for my device at all. When I bought the phone it was updated on the spot. I know for sure right now these versions are not rootable. Guess I am going to have to wait or root. Thanks for the help.
Hey does anyone have a one click root method for the moto x 2014 (XT1092)? Don't wanna manually root it coz I'd probably stuff something up, thanks.
Currently, there is no one click root method for moto x 2014, and as I can see, there won't be any.
The ONLY way for us to root is by unlocking the bootloader, installing twrp and root using supersu or something like that.
Kingroot brags about that they can root android 5.1 but when you try with our phone, you get failed/there is no strategy method available.
As far as I know, you have xt1092 so you are able to unlock your bootloader. I have verizon's xt1096 and I can't do that , and probably won't be at all.

Have you tried getting Motorola to unlock your xt1096? It seems there have been quite a few people successfully unlocking their carrier branded Moto X 2014. I can't comment on whether or not it is true since I have XT1095, but I'm just saying......

Well, I've done that already a year ago... Motorola made it available to unlock the xt1096 bootloader.
I moved to Galaxy s7 already so it's not relevant for me but thanks!
