Hello folks.
I'm on a bit of a limbo. Can you help me?
Fist of all i should state that i was a former Galaxy S3 owner, so even if I have some experience with the underworld of rooting and flashing, bootloader issues are a bit alien for me.
The problem:
My Brazilian Moto X with unlocked bootloader was on 4.4, and after receiving the OTA update, i thought that i could update it if I removed root and etc (after all i was not using Xposed and ETC, so no deep modifications at /system that i know).
Of course i was wrong, and as greeted with a nice bootloop by my moto X. No problem, I got the 4.4.2 UK and flashed it thought RSD lite. After the flashing, I dit not liked the modifications the UK 4.4.2 retail have (like carrier name on bar, etc etc) and just flashed Philz and recovered my nandroid.
All is nice, but now i can't update to 4.4.2 Brazilian because i can't install 4.4 Retail Brazilian trought RSD lite, since the Moto X just detects that it haves 4.4.2 bootloader and not let me downgrade! I'm in a Limbo \o/
What now? There is any way to downgrade the bootloader? There is any one who have a full Brazilian 4.4.2 image (or a image without carrier name on the bar) for unlocked bootloaders? Any 4.4.2 flashable update using CWM or TWRP?
Oh god, so many questions. Thanks for your atention!

you can't downgrade the bootlaoder sorry
as for the carrier name in the bar someone will make a xposed mod to remove it.
i would either stay with 4.4 if that makes you happy or flash the correct 4.4.2 firmware for your device and tweak it to your liking.
Unfortunately you cannot downgrade the bootloader from 4.4.2 to 4.4.
Is it so dificult to do a 4.4.2 flashable update or we just lack devs?

If you find the factory 4.4.2 image for your device, then you manually flash the 4.4.2 files.

I can only find the UK one. There is no 4.4.2 factory image for Brazilian Moto X, and i really don't want to install Xposed to remove the carrier name from the bar, since i play Square Enix titles.

I'm a dev too. Let's research.
The full image will probably be available in a few days to a week, so you should probably just wait for it since your phone is working.
Boot loaders are number differently that's why everyone who has flash, or just about everyone who has flashed a new firmware has had issue evedn though the firmwares are 4.4.2, morale . Flash only your specific carrier firmware and all this craziness would stop, my 2 cents

It certainly seems Motorola has changed the game with 4.4.2, flashing other carriers firmware at this time seems quite risky. As you said I wouldn't recommend it right now until more is known and all full flash images of 4.4.2 are released.

Someone should start a thread with all info and have it stickied, getting stupid here, miss info, assuming have a unlocked boot loader will prevent hard bricks.

OP's issue was that he wanted to downgrade to 4.2 -- not that he was trying to change the carrier version of the 4.4.2 bootloader. Are there any threads about someone having an issue trying to flash a different carrier's version of 4.4.2?

Threads no but multiple threads about issues, stay away from flashing another carriers 4.4.2 firmware at this point in time, I'm trying to get boot loader numbers for all carrier firmware , so far all north american and south american boot loaders are the same but T-Mobile and AT&T have yet to be released, European boot loaders are not yet posted

Every issue that I've read about is from people trying to downgrade. I haven't seen anyone have an issue about trying to side-grade

After I unlock my AT&T XT1058, plan to fully wipe it with RSD lite -as my recovery is modified some (I'm on 4.2.2 pre camera update, rooted with pwnmymoto)
Will using RSD lite restore my recovery to clear away any changes? (I'm guessing that is in large part the main point in doing it?)
Then, to go to 4.4 (I don't think 4.4.2 is fully released for my device yet?) would the best way be to, while still on stock recovery, before installing TWRP, just accept the OTA updates available? -then install TWRP and SU?
Appreciate any help, trying to read and learn.
Thank you!
Your way will work. But the easiest way really, is to flash the firmware manually with fastboot/mfastboot. If the files are available for your device already.
Check the stickied complete guide to Moto x in the general section. Under return to stock. Its not difficult if you've ever used fastboot before.
You'll need to use fadtboot to unlock your device anyway, so you will know your pc is set up right if you are able to unlock your bootloader.
I'm not 100 percent clear on the whole pre camera update 4.2.2 stuff tho, since I never had that firmware. But I don't see a problem with flashing 4.4 with fastboot. May want to do a bit of homework on the subject to be sure about what you need to do tho.
Again, check out all the stickied guides.

I have been reading the stickies, but still can get confusing, and I like to be cautious as I don't want to mess up. I knew I could RSD stock firmware, etc., and presumed I could flash a newer version for my device instead of OTA, but wanted to make sure it was ok to go that route. The newest version for AT&T is still 4.4
For a clean install, would I still want to RSD my current firmware (4.2.2), or would flashing a new firmware (4.4) with fastboot "clean" things up as well?
Thanks
I guess the closest from the sticky: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/ref-how-to-root-4-4-links-guides-t2603358 would be the "returning to stock" option, but just using the firmware I want, and of course not opting to relock

Yup. The fact that you're on pre camera, but haven't downgraded to it means you should just be able to upgrade however you want.
But as I said....I'd double check this....you are pre camera 4.2.2.....and I am not 1000% positive that there aren't any precautions due to being on pre camera firmware.
I don't want to cause you trouble cause I alone say its fine. LOL
Reasearch, or wait for more opinions here.

Thanks, hopefully someone else will chime in re: pre camera firmware/possible issues. if not, then at least I know the safe, though longer way is to accept the OTA's
As long as you're 100% sure you're on pre camera 4.2.2 and always have been. You could just rsdlite the pre camera 4.2.2 and ota upgrade from there. That's a safe bet.

Thanks, I know I bought an unlock code (probably about 2 weeks ago), just haven't unlocked yet, but hoping it will work.
Hoping to finally use my unlock code tonight
Trying to learn a lot...
*After unlocking, if successful, plan to RSD lite to stock (my current ROM, 4.2.2 pre camera), then take all the available updates to get to 4.4 (on AT&T XT1058)
Then flash TWRP and SU
I thought I had seen somewhere, and been searching:
*If I need stock recovery back, i.e., to accept an OTA update, etc, is the only way to flash the stock firmware to get the recovery? And looks like that can be done with Fastboot (or mfastboot when necessary) I thought I saw somewhere (fastboot flash recovery recovery.img) about using fastboot and changing the recovery name to get back to stock recovery -looks like most things are done with fastboot.
*Was trying to find then, what the major difference is between RSD lite and Fastboot -it appears RSD is just for flashing stock firmware, but looks like Fastboot can flash firmware, too
Been reading the stickies...a lot, and all threads, but any clarification to help me learn would be greatly appreciated
Thanks!

Thanks -still trying to find the exact fastboot command for stock recovery, if I need it, unless what I wrote is it.
Yes, I'm figuring once I'm stock, there will be a couple of OTA updates that will pop up
Need some help please
Was able to unlock the bootloader, then got the prompt to accept and install the update for 4.2.2 camera update (was pre camera 4.2.2) I accepted and installed, then got caught in a boot loop, was able to get into fastboot on the phone
Figuring I need to RSD lite? But would it be the version I was on (4.2.2 pre camera?) guessing that's why it was boot looping?
Thanks!
I read that 4.4.3 will be coming any day for Sprint Moto X (already out for T-Mobile.)
I've rooted my phone, deleted some bloatware, installed Xposed, etc.
Will I need to re-flash the stock ROM before updating to 4.4.3?
Or will there be a pre-rooted 4.4.3 on this forum which I can flash right over my phone as it is (like there were for my older devices)?
Sorry, new to Moto X.
You'll need the bloat back, that's why you should only disable and not delete it. OTAs do file checks on the system partition and if any are missing or modified the OTA will fail. You'll also need to disable Xposed as well.

I was just going to ask the exactly same question. I am also on Sprint, and had gone through the official bootloader unlock but not changed the stock rom. I imagine I will still get the OTA update, and taking it will not make me lose root?
I have the OTA update reminder frozen with Titanium Backup right now and am currently running 4.4 out of paranoia. Reading some of the other posts, it seems that I might be OK and OTA updates may only affect those on ATT/Verizon that had to go through other means to get get root?
Always best to freeze...not delete. Takes very little space up and no problem with ota's.
You can always download the official 4.4.2 from Moto and flash system.img and recovery.img. Those will get you back to stock. Then you can take the OTA, flash TWRP, root and reinstall Xposed (all your modules and Xposed/gravity box settings will still be there).
That is what I did going from 4.4 to 4.4.2. Worked like a charm.
You have to flash system.img with mfastboot though not just fastboot. Just Google instructions. They are on xda as well.

What I'm curious about....is if you will be able to downgrade from 4.4.3 to 4.4.2? If its the same bootloader, which I'm sure it is....should be fine. If it isn't....I see many brick threads in the coming days. ?

This was asked about when the 4.2.2 to 4.4 OTA came out, and again when the 4.4 to 4.4.2 OTA came out..
so see -> Taking an OTA
I purchased it in Aurora, CO from a buddy that said he was using it on T-Mobile.
Everything works great even the LTE on T-Mobile, but from what I read the XT1058 was AT&T's variant of the Moto X and wasnt supposed to support the T-Mobile LTE bands.
I did a little research & found out that it is not a AT&T branded XT1058 and is actually from another country.
After checking the Moto X wiki i came to the conclusion that its the XT1058 model from TIM Brazil
I used it the whole day and noticed an app called "BR Apps" that had a brazil flag in the icon that i just can't uninstall. I can disable it but i want it gone.
I want to root this phone and fiddle with it, but don't know what will work with it.
The bootloader is locked and not sure if it is safe for me to start trying to root this thing.
My biggest question is if it is safe to root this XT1058 the same way as the AT&T or other carrier moto x?
Heres some more info on it.

The AT&T Moto X (and ALL the XT1058 variants) DOES support all the LTE bands that T-Mobile uses. It does NOT support the AWS band which T-Mobile uses for HSPA/HSPA+
All of the XT1058 variants have the same frequency bands....otherwise the FCC would require a different FCC ID.
Anyways, its GREAT that you have a non-U.S. XT1058, because you SHOULD be able to unlock the bootloader from Motos website!!! (AT&T XT1058s can NOT be unlocked through Moto....AT&T won't allow them to give out the unlock codes for the AT&T variants)
If you want root, unlock your bootloader and flash TWRP (which will root the device). Then you're all set! No crazy exploits needed......and you'll be safe with future versions because you won't be using a root 'exploit' that can be patched.

Make sense?
Makes perfect sense. I upgraded from a t-mobile galaxy s3 that was easier to root because of odin software and wasn't 100% sure where I would even start rooting this moto. You pretty much cleared everything up for me. This xt1058 is one of the good ones is what you are saying and its boot loader is ublockable. As far as baseband it should remain the same? Can I flash xt1058/xt1053 ROMs without running into weird issues or should I treat this device like any other US version?

Yep, pretty much. One of the 'good' ones
It *should* be bootloader unlockable. You will have to try the moto website I linked to see for sure.
You can flash any XT1058 rom safely....the Rogers Canada version seems to be a favorite around here. Some users have reported flashing the XT1053 rom without any issues as well. The XT1058 has 2 additional LTE bands over and above the 1053, and we aren't sure if you 'lose' these bands by flashing the 1053 rom though. This really isn't an issue though, because those 2 LTE bands aren't even used in the U.S. right now.
Do not flash one of the CDMA (verizon, sprint, etc) roms though...
If you flash a different carrier rom you should flash the entire rom (baseband and all). Its not recommended to mix different roms and basebands....and of course you HAVE to be bootloader unlocked -before- you can flash another carrier's rom

Great! If you get an error when flashing to a different carrier rom, let me know and I'll help you get past it.
Also, if you are planning on flashing the 1053 ROM and updating to 4.4.3, you will need to use a new version of TWRP and SuperSU. See here:

I live in Brazil and got a Moto X for my wife, I love it, now considering buy another for myself
She has same version as @tKoHaXoR:
Android Version: 4.4.2
Baseband version: MSM8960PRO_BP_2323.031.111.00R
System version: 161.44.26.ghost_row.TIM.en.BR
Kernel version: 3.4.42-g7a3369f
Build number: KXA20.16-1.26
I'd like to get root and keep the stock ROM, at least for now I won't mess with custom ROMs on it.
My questions:
- once I unlock bootloader and root, I won't get OTA anymore?
- seems 4.4.4 stock is not out for it yet, when it comes I will be able to flash even if I don't get it from OTA?
Sorry it's hard to feel like a noob again, when I did everything possible and flashed dozens of ROMs on my old Galaxy S2

I'm not 100% sure if it will still get OTA, but most likely you will get a notification on your phone that the update is available. The thing is you will most likely lose root if you accept the OTA update.
I recommend just rooting and installing custom recovery for now and once the update does roll out come back to XDA and look for the rooted 4.4.4 rom and flash it to your device.
Thanks @tKoHaXoR, I unlocked the bootloader yesterday, after messing up a little it's working ok.
Not working great yet, I tried to "integrate updates into system" using Titanium and now "modality services" and "active display" are force closing after boot.
Now trying to find a stock based ROM, it would be nice to have one CWM flashable and deodexed...
Which one did you install?
So, as I understand, there's 2 main types of Moto X: CDMA and GSM
And this XT1058 runs GSM ROMS, so the one from XT1053 should work.

Once you unlock the bootloader, and root, you'll still get OTA Updates when the phone's carrier pushes them.
As long as you are stock, and haven't modified too much, you can flash the OTA's. You can be rooted. (for more see -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/MotoX-OTA.html )
You can always use RSDLite or mFastboot to flash if the SBF (rom) for your phone/carrier gets leaked and put on http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0 (this site is neither owned, maintained, nor operated by Motorola). They don't have the OTA update files, just the full rom. Based on you earlier posting System version: 161.44.26.ghost_row.TIM.en.BR You have an XT1058 from TIM Brazil.
If you haven't received the OTA yet, but are stock (including stock recovery) and someone shares the OTA zip file for your phone and its carrier, you can manually install it.

Kind of, but not exactly...
We usually don't recommend flashing the ROM from one model/carrier onto another (like flashing an ATT XT1058 with a T-MObile XT1053) because there are risks something could go wrong. That doesn't mean you can't, just means there is a chance you could mess your phone up either in flashing the other rom, or when you try and flash back to stock.
If you are looking for 3rd party or "after market" roms, like CM or such, then yes, usually they don't include modems and such, making them somewhat model independent. (SO you could flash the same CM ROM for GSM on an XT1052, XT1053, XT1058, etc.)

Like the title says i've got an XT 1053 ( Developer Edition ) T-Mo variant. A while back I gave this phone to my kid, before I did I flashed the stock rom off of the Moto website. the bootloader is unlocked but I didn't root the phone figuring the kid didn't really need root and in the future he could take ota's, well for some reason the 5.1 ota won't install.
4.4.4
The current build # is KXA21.12-L1.29.1
Sys Version is 213.44.1.ghost_row.retail.en.us
Baseband is MSM8960PRO_BP_2323.038.123.OOR
I'm not sure what to do here, does Moto still list their firmwares online? If so I can't find them. i've seen some files here on XDA but i'm not really sure whats appropriate for this phone.
If anyone can help me get up to date on this I would really appreciate it. I just flashed my Nexus 9, Nexus 7, and Nexus 6, and didn't run into any problems, but i'm kinda stumped on this one.
Thanks
i had same issue, dont know if yours is same but i also had an xt1053 that i had returned to stock and after some time wouldnt take 5.1 ota, i had to use rsd again for it to take ota,
here is a link to motorola firmware i use, http://motofirmware.center/files/
Does it have stock recovery? It has to be on stock to take ota's. You can flash the xt1053 5.1 rom on here that doesn't update the bootloader, so you can go back if you wish because lots if people hate lollipop
