i installed philz recovery yesterday after which i bricked my n7000 while i tried installing the C-Rom .
I just now used ODIN to get back to my STOCK ROM that is 2.3.6.
Its really interesting to see how i can just go back to the first firmware my phone came with
Please suggest me a combination of a custom recovery & a custom ROM without getting bricked .
as im new to this open source & trying new things for my phone ,i would like to try something according to your experiences .
Something which is stable ,smooth and latest !!
Thanks !!
i have read many many posts and whenever i try to install any recovery, i get E:verification failed !!
what am i doing wrong !! Please help !!

While on GB you cannot install any kernel from recovery.. only using Odin. . You have to be either on ICS or JB to be able to follow Philz kernel install steps.

First of all, Thanks a lot for your reply. Now i understand why and how my several attempts failed
now i clearly understand that if im on JellyBean , then i can install kernel from recovery.
I just updated my phone to JellyBean using the official update option in the phone.
Can you please direct me to the right link to install kitkat rom from using odin .

KK cannot be installed using Odin as its a custom rom.. As you are on JB, root it using one of the Philz kernels matching your rom build number (post 3 or Philz thread TW).. The flash raw r4 kernel, boot into its recovery and then flash KK roms.

Please kindly just reply by answering the specifically asked question regarding the kit kat rom.
I am in a confused state as i can see there are a huge amount of ROMs available many are nightly made, which say them to be not in a stable state.
Found the SlimKat in the forum ,downloading the ROM SlimSaber-n7000-4.4.2-20140531.zip 139mb
Installation instructions..
Download the latest build from [here]
Gapps ( if you don't have it already) from [here]
!Recommended! Full wipe, and manual format /system
Flash ROM and the gapps you want, reboot
Maybe a silly question but ,Do i need to download the gapps files & why ??

This is a development forum. It is not expected that you are a developer but it would be a sign of respect to read their threads and follow their instructions - they spent a lot of their time writing them. And if you not understand then try to use the search.

Not one of these questions show anything of this:
the first is part of the installation instructions.
the second can be found with the search (and was answered thousands of times)
the third is simply against XDA rules
To flash a kitkat rom, the recovery needs to be compatible with SE linux.
The recovery is part of a kernel
To flash a kitkat rom you need to flash a recent kernel first.
Try flashing raw kernel r4,r5, or Forest-CM11. it does not matter that they are incompatible with your current or future roms, they will get overwritten when you flash a rom (roms include kernels).
Then reboot recovery or restart phone and enter recovery again.
Then you wipe cache, data, and system.
Then flash the kitkat rom of choice.

Hey Guys,
I have Galaxy note GT-N7000
android ver. : 4.0.3
I wanna know how could I update to jelly bean or at least ICS 4.4 if there is no official version of JB for Note yet,
I'm afraid that I heard that there is a problem with the Kernel or something like this in galaxy note that I can't update to newer version of andriod,
could you tell me please how to do this safely without any harm ?!!
Once you flash stock ROM for your area then you will be able to update with kies/OTA (once it released to your area)
But incase if you are on any other ROM there will be option to update with Odin.
stay tuned to XDA.
do you have a costum rom or are you planning to get a costum rom??
if that is the case you can use odin to flash a safe kernel and then flash an unofficial costum rom...search in the forum...
if you are on stock rom and you plan on staying on stock rom you will have to wait till it releases and you can download it once its released
the thing about the ICS being unsafe applies only if you're rooting or flashing a costum rom...other then that you should be fine as far as I know.
just out of curiosity why is everyone so eager to get on ics or jb??I am still on gingerbread and I don't exactly need to update...

You will remain same on ICS 4.0.4 by flashing this. But this is safe kernel, you will be safe from emmc brick bug, as well you can use its CWM to backup/restore nandroid, as well you can flash custom ROM.

After flashing safe kernel, you can safely wipe or hard reset.
And yes flash custom rom too, but before flashing custom rom you have to read instruction from custim rom thread op.

If you have flashed Phillz kernel, you will have same kernel description as stock, b'coz phillz kernel is stock + patched for brick bug + root+adv CWMR
-You will have advanced CWMR, and you can flash custom ROM safely. It is recommend to wipe cache and data before flashing custom ROM
You can find custom ROM on android deve section, read OP of custom ROM, and few post after that for any instruction from developer. there you can find features of ROM and installation method
Decide yourself which suite you best
GoodLuck

Custom ROM should come packed with kernel
So it will get change once you flash it. Later if you want to change, find out which is best supporting for your custom ROM and you can change.

You can use Philz kernel as your base to flash any custom rom. Usually the instruction to flash custom rom requires full wipe, i.e. wipe cache/dalvik/data, and Philz kernel is SAFE to do full wipe.

Very useful thread!
A Must-See for new users that want to root their S2.
Just one more question, if I want to upgrade the CWMR in the future, can I do it in the CWMR by "Install zip from sdcard"/"Choose zip from sdcard" ? Theres no need to worry about the kernel, right?
Thank you
I am in same situation, is there a way to check if Philz kernel is properly installed before doing the wipe, just to be safe,
any info will be greatly appreciated
If you kernel is flashed properly then you should have advanced recovery.

2. I see 3 differents ROMS to download... 4.2.1 - 4.1.2 - v3
What's the differences? i read that 4.1.2 is better (more stable) but why? i dont want flash 4.1.2 if in 2 weeks 4.2.1 will be better and i must to do wipes again...

My worm suggestion is to go with 4.1.2.More stable and everything works.
You can flash 4.2.1 without wipe over this(not recomended). But there will be a time till 4.2.1 be fully functional.
Try 4.1.2 you won't regret.
Many regards
Thx for reply
I'll try 4.1.2 and in the future I'll try 4.2.1 if i want it... xD
For installation... can I flash over a clean 2.3.6 directly or i need flash a JB or ICS first (as CM)?

You can flash over a clean 2.3.6 but first read tutorials. Basics:
1. Get root permisions
2. Install CWM
3. Get your ROM (zip file).
4. Then follow ROM installation intructions.
Hi again,
I install 4.1.2 before and all was ok... then try 4.2.1 and had very problems
Install from CWM it's ok, but when reboot and start config... only have this messages:
"Installatiewizard is gestopt"
And FC, FC, FC.....
Of course i try to install 4 times and ALWAYS I did 3 wipes....
Can help me pls?
I can not create a new user in the terminal (pm create-user name) and I can not create a new user with the user managemed app, my question is if I am doing any wrong or if this ROM (Beast 4.2.1-20121214) can not have multi user.
Sorry for my english, but it is not my first language.
Hi
Just got my N7000 back from service; With just about all the hardware except the screen were replaced, it also returned running the stock ROM (Android 4.1.2, kernel version 3.0.31-1103517, build JZ054K.N7000XXLT5). While the stock Jelly Bean is miles ahead of both the original Gingerbread ROM and the stock ICS ROM, I'd rather root and go back to the CyanogenMod nightlies...
Thing is, between all the "Super Brick" and "eMMC" bugs - I'm a bit scared and terribly confused with witch technique I should use to root and ROM my phone. It sure would be nice if someone could point me to a tried and tested method (preferably a step by step guide) to root and ROM my N7000XXLT5...
Root using Philz kernel. Then you can flash the rom of you choice. For instructions, head over to his thread in the original android development section.

Thanks nokiamodeln91!
I assume you're referring to [PhilZ-cwm6][n7000]. I've looked at this earlier. I've settled on and are comfortable flashing it using the stock recovery method, and the step by step guide (in post #3 of the PhilZ-cwm6 thread) should make this manageable enough...
The problem however is that I'm unsure as to which package/version to download. I've looked at the "What kernel to choose section" in post #2 of the PhilZ-cwm6 thread, but from that information I cannot figure out which kernel matches/is suitable for my device...
As I said, I'm terribly confused by all this...

Thanks again! I've downloaded "PhilZ-cwm6-XXLT5-OXX-5.03.0-signed.zip" and are ready to root/rom my phone!
I guess it freaks me out not knowing/understanding everything. Especially about something as fundamental as the bootloader/OS of my phone. It's a weird feeling reading info like "DDLSC - DXLSE - JPLSB - XXLT5 - ZSLO2" without understanding most it. Also kind of freaks me out that I'm not supposed to use the latest version of a piece of software....
Though, I've had it with the stock rom again and are ready to take my chances! So again; Thank you!
@nokiamodeln91; Just wanted to say thank you!
Rooting with "Philz kernel" is quite possibly the easiest root I've performed. Once I were sure which version/variant to download is nothing to worry about.
So now I'm back to being a happy N7000 user running CyanogenMOD! Only difference being that I'm back to nightlies...
Again; Thanks!

If you are rooted then just flash ultimatum ROM .zip file
It has AROMA installer and it will ask you which kernel to install.
If you want to flash kernel separately then you can find the files on Ultimatum ROM page itself.
Glad you replied me bro

If you are running a Stock rom, root your device and flash CWM5 and then you'll be able to upgrade your firmware
With CWM5 (Stock rom e.g.) you can flash directly CM10.x and viceversa, so:
CMW5.x >>> Stock Roms/CM7.x/CM9./CM10.x
CMW6.x >>> CM11/Omni/Android 4.4.x
