on the fence with Nexus 5 - Nexus 5 General

I had Galaxy Nexus for just a year when the Nexus 5 came out and it was love at first sight, some of my friends have it and i absolutely love that phone! My plan was to be patient and wait for the 2014's release of the new NExus.
Right now, not only the wait is killing me but there's also these rumours saying there will be no nexus 6, on the other hand if i wait till october to find out and decide to buy Nexus 5, then i'll be in the same situation i was 2 years ago with the Galaxy Nexus, I'd be buying a phone that will have a phone that receives no official updates after just one year ...
Anyone else in this situation? The wait to know more on NExus 6 is killing me!

I also wanted to wait for the bed Nexus 6, and it was a pain with my HTC one s. As soon as I heard the rumors I ran and got the Nexus 5 and it's awesome, don't regret it a bit.

I just bought a 7 month old Nexus 5. For 5 reasons...
I'm upgrading from a HTC Desire (Bravo)
I've got a Nexus 7 with CM on and I love it
My friend has a N5 with stock ROM on and loves his phone
I'm heavy handed with my phones and want performance for price
I like the all black look Slimkat will offer with the bezel
On the above, I almost waited until the G3 came out, but I am very excited to receive my N5 tomorrow
Also, my desire has CM installed too.

No offense, but stop d*icking around with your legacy GN—please read my relevant post at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48553703&postcount=1.

sorry, but if you're waiting around for the latest and greatest, you'll never be able to buy anything... the "next" device will always be better than the current one.

Get the Oneplus One when (or if) it becomes available for general sale. I love my N5 but that last update was so long in the making and so short in fixes and features. Hopefully the next OS version will be announced this month and we will know when it will be available, otherwise I may go to the oneplus or even the G3.

How is this any different from any other phone on the planet? The nexus series gets updates a million times faster than other phones. The S3 I had before didn't get updated to 4.3 until just this past winter or so. Also, waiting for the oneplus phone might be longer than waiting for the nexus 6/ silver whatever Google has planned.
As for the G3, I wouldn't hold my breath on updates with that, especially if you're on Tmo. The Tmo version of the G2 still isn't easily rooted on kitkat.
OP, going from the original Galaxy Nexus to the N5 is going to be a major update, for me going from S3 to N5 was a noticeable upgrade. IMO the N5 is currently to best phone available, at least for somebody who likes rooting and custom roms. If you just want the latest and greatest go with s5 or g3.

I know the N5 gets the fastest updates, just saying this last one took a while and fixed almost nothing. Rumors that Nexus line is done and we have no idea when/if Silver is coming out and what the cost details will be. Oneplus one is taking forever to come out but the specs are great, price is right and CM should also have a fast update schedule.

I'll sell you my N5 with a flip wake case and spigen shell case for cheap. I love the nexus 5 but I have a nexus 4 back up phone and think I might get the moto x on sale today..

Any "significantly" better phones to come out, will have a significantly higher price.
Mostly I think these devices have sort of peaked. I think advances will be sluggish, and as I said...any huge improvement will come with a huge price.
So....buy what suits your needs and price range now. The N5 will hold its own for real world use for some time.

The last update was a POINT release, not a feature release. It addressed some bugs that some people had, and not much more. That's what it was supposed to do. It didn't come out when you wanted it? Tough. Use something else, then talk to me about updates, available roms, support, etc.... you'll come running back. <the grass is always greener on the other side syndrome>

I agree. If the next gen phone was 8 cores/4gb ram/64bit and affordable, then yeah, wait. But that won't happen. As said, the N5 will be a force to reckon with for some time. It still has near-top specs and is $349. Nothing can touch it. With 4.4.3 and running ART, I would speedtest my phone against any stock phone confidently in real world examples. You are splitting hairs these days between phones until the TRUE next gen phone comes out. And even then, it will come with a big price.

I just got my N5 last week after going back and forth. I've had a ton of flagships in the past 6 months and nothing really compares to what the N5 has to offer for the price. Its easily my fav phone to date after using the MotoX, G2, Z1, and One m7. It has its drawbacks but its benefits outweigh them easily. If you're okay with the camera and battery specs, then its a great phone for sure.

I really don't have the complaint with the camera, It works pretty descently. I have to say my biggest complaint after having the phone since it was released is how it switches from 3G to 4G. I am not sure if this is a network thing or not. But once the phone descides a 4G signal is to low, it switches to 3G, but doesnt switch back to 4G when the signal gets better. Happen all the time in my office building.. I am constantly putting it into airplane mode, then back out of airplane mode. Then it switches right back to 4G.

Apparently, the Nexus 6 has been halted and instead, they are working on "Android Silver". Maybe they are going to turn the Nexus 6 into something that will go head to head with HTC's and Samsungs heavyweights (HTC One M9 and Galaxy S6).
Some of the specs I read(reportedly) about the Nexus 6 were stunning. Hopefully it's still in production for a fall 2014 release. But I wont be surprised if it's delayed because of their interest for Android Silver

I hope this year's Google io will have some news regarding nexus 6. If not, I'll probably go ahead and acquire nexus 5

Make me feel good about Nexus 4 again

Hello Dear Nexus 4 owners and friends,
Holiday greetings. I am finding it so difficult to stay satisfied with my Nexus 4. With all the great deals this past weekend and then the Moto X (Android Central Phone Of The Year) for only $350 Wednesday and next Monday I just am having identity issues with my current phone. I mean it "feels" fast enough, I get GREAT battery life, I've got KitKat, and mods.... I just want more. My ideal phone is the LG G2 but thanks to good ole T-Mobile's un-carrier foolishness I can't get one for free with a contract or upgrade anymore. The Moto X seems nice but it's got the same size screen and the camera appears so so.... I don't want so so... I've already got that... I want bad a$$ blow your mind fast with awesome camera and a solid battery life to boot.... Then at the end of the day I think overall My Nexus 4 has been good to me today. It easily gets 14 - 15 hours battery life with 3+ hours screen on time... Plays games fast... I think if it only had a slightly better screen and camera I would be happy... Anyone else going through this during this festive shopping season?
Thanks folks!

Well, you have listed all the best things about nexus 4 there and to add, active development support from this community. If you're still unhappy about it then buy a new phone. LG G2 seems to be a good choice if battery life and camera is what you're after. Nexus 5 is good too though I'm not sure about its battery life.

My brother owns a n5 and battery life is much better than mine. I undervolt, underclock, etc and he just... owns a stock n5
GF has the LG G2 and its a nice phone. wish development was more active for it. soooo wanna put CM or whatever on it. im not a big fan of the UI, but she loves it. Mind you shes an ex-craPhone user. Imo its a good phone on looks, battery, and features. i love my N4(miss my Gnex as well). its a great phone and lovethe development going for it. yea camera is eh, but i dont take that much pics. enjoy the nexusness about it. dislike the rear glass back(gf dropped it out of my hands while taking my car keys. thank god for my slip on case). only thing i want is a bigger SD. the G2 come with a 32gb SD from tmobile and the N4's 16gb makes me cry knowing that i have 2gb of space left. If you like the stock feel of android, pick between the Moto X or the N5. If you want a new phone with something different you got the G2. have you checked out sony's new baby yet? step-padre has one and its a nice phone.
Got a nexus 5, it doesn't feel as premium as the 4 does with its curved glass and solid feel.
Battery wise, I only use 2g with data off and WiFi only, my nexus 4 edges it.
You're having issues with yourself, not with the phone. Get a psychiatrist.
Well I just learned that with the t-mobiles uncarrier plan and with the jump thing every 6 months when you trade your phone in they squash whatever you owe on your phone and let you upgrade to the next one without a penalty.
So I'm not sure I'd exactly call it foolishness. I think the LG G2 is 0 down right now and 17 a month. . . you can either keep it longer or trade it in at 6 months...
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
i think that anything that is not nexus can't be considered an ANDROID phone, so I'll stay with n4 because the n5 doesn't offer anithing that can justify the deal.

I think 17 is AT&T G2?
"Jump" is a way to generate more revenue out of customers...
Current price of T-mobile LG G2 is 24 a month(never seen it drop to 17, the most is 50 off- 0 down) 10+24+taxes add up to about 37 a month...
You would be constantly paying more after 6 months ($10 jump fee plus the monthly payment on the new phone or existing phone.)
I bought a like new LG G2 for $450 total 2 months after manufacturing date.
I think it's a good deal...
Honestly I really love the Nexus 4. If I had T-Mobile coverage at home, I would not have to upgrade. However Nexus 4 does not Wifi-calling which I realize I really need when I'm at home. The camera and faster CPU are added benefits. However Nexus 4 seriously is fast enough to me and the LTE is nice when I go out. I was planning to switch to AT&T for a free phone and better signal but their 25% price increase forced me to drop the idea.

Well for me other factors to consider is that I'm broke.... Lol. To get a new phone outright I would probably have to sell my Nexus 4 and 2012 Nexus 7 tablet. I'm already paying $20 a month on my wife's Galaxy S4. So I don't wanna up my cell phone bill yet another 15-20 dollars a month for my phone. I guess I just get bored easily. Lol. Had the HD2, Then Galax S2, now my Nexus 4...i just get bored and wanna check out new stuff. At one point I said "The Nexus 4 is gonna be my last phone"..... Guess not.. I will probably figure out something after the new year. I can make more changes with my TMO plan in January. I don't wanna just run out and buy a Moto X because it's the cheapest... Don't really wanna settle.

Feel good about Nexus 4 again? Still loving my N4! 4 Reasons below!
1) NEXUS 5 PORT 4.4 KRT16S odexed 26/11/2013 Fully merged with MAKO binaries
2) Qualcomm-optimized Dalvik libraries from MOTOX 4.4
3) 36dpi nav bar

The Voice activated Google Now! Alone makes it worth its wait in gold for me when driving and need to send email or SMS! The N4 is still a great phone! Yeah would love the N5! But not got the funds or the inclination to replace a device that has not once shown, its not up to the task it is set! My Wife has the Galaxy Nexus! Another great phone that is still performing for what she needs and its her i will be upgrading first to the N5. Think too many people get side lined by the speed of how quickly our phones are surpassed with newer and shiny models! Its like the camera on phones! What do people expect? Your not going to take your wedding photos using your phone! My phone is and always will be a tool! Not a fashion accessory otherwise i would have bought into the iOS crowd (Mac user so not Anti-Apple). The N4 is still performing and with the great Dev's on XDA don't really see me getting bored anytime soon!

Oh I didn't realize that that wasn't the price. I called yesterday about looking at an upgrade and was offered 0 down and 17 a month on a GTO and on a nexus 5. Maybe those were just holiday deals or something. Also I don't ever talk to regular customer service I always go straight to the I want to close my account department.
To me its not a bad deal though that means every 6 months at that price I'm spending about 120$ .. and get a new device.
However all of that said in understood I'm not looking to go from my Nexus 4 for a while. I'm running a stock kitLat rooted with faux kernel and love it.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
It's a freaking phone, it's not supposed to replace your wife. Just do something else when you're bored with it. But it's your money, if you can afford another phone, go for it.
I have been down this path before, getting a new phone like every month. But with the unlimited customization I can do with the Nexus I couldn't get bored with it. I love the speed of KitKat with ART, I don't even feel the need to get a Nexus 5 yet. I can't see myself dealing with TouchWiz, Sense or any other third party bloated UIs again. If I have the urge to, I can install skins or theme it, just take a look at what people can do in this thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1990251
The fun with Nexus devices is the tinkering and hacking you can do with it, without losing a large chunk of your wallet. If you just want the latest, greatest and fastest, you will be chasing an endless target.

My reasons:
-Fully working sweep2wake and sleep with NEO kernel, LG G2's knock knock feature got nothing on this.
-Faux color and sound kernel features
-PSX rom (I'm normally not convinced by roms that claim to be fast, but this is clearly fast translated to real experience, not just benchmarks. Just hope it'll continue to be supported in some form at xda.)
-The vast amount of roms and their features.
-And the number one reason: MultiRom

Replacing mako...

I'm feeling sad. Because I know my mako will soon be spreading its wings and going to a new home. My contract is up and I promised a friend who had an S4 nicked only a couple of weeks after getting it that she could have my N4 when my contract is up for renewal (I wouldn't really want anybody to be stuck with a Desire running stock 2.2...) But my real question and purpose for posting here is what do I get to replace it? I know there's an obvious answer and the Nexus 5 is probably what I'll end up with, but I thought I'd throw this out there for the advice of you lovely netizens
I've played with an N5 in the O2 shop and it really doesn't feel like much of an upgrade to the 4. I'm not particularly fond of the very generic industrial design or the in-hand feel. I'm sure given a bit of tinkering and a custom ROM it could be quite nice, but with the stock ROM on the N5 (obviously) and the modded colour profile on the N4, I actually prefer the LCD on the mako! The camera is much better on the 5, not that I use it much, and I suppose the battery life ought to be a bit better. It really didn't feel any faster but I'm sure SlimKat + over clock vs stock is not a fair comparison. It just seems silly to be stuck with a phone for 2 years which has already been made obsolete (in my mind) by this years' MWC launches and which doesn't really represent a big upgrade from the phone I have now.
So what about the S5? I've pretty much discounted it due to the fact that it's a Samsung, which means AOSP ROM support will be poor, it will suffer from SOD and probably also fry its eMMC after a few months Although I'm sure there are people willing to endure that for a removable battery and a microSD slot, I'm not one of them. Funnily enough, several of my friends who own/owned S3s have said they'll not buy another Sammy...
The Z2? Well, I guess it's likely to have good AOSP support so long as I can get my mitts on an unbranded one (no prob, I'll just renew through Carphone Warehouse) but it's also GIGANTIC and I'm not sure whether it uses the easily broken dragon trail glass and that daft easily scratched plastic outer layer like the original Z.
I presume there will be a new HTC One (two?) very soon, which has a chance of being a more reasonable size and probably better build quality than the competitors but I don't know what the situation with bootloader locking is like on current HTC Qualcomm devices? (Assuming it will be Qualcomm) After my One X debacle, I pretty much told myself I wouldn't buy another HTC but I have had many over the years which have been great so it seems mean not to forgive them for that one terrible device.
I presume LG won't be in on this round of upgrades (aside from phabletty ones) but I had considered the G2 due to its larger battery but otherwise similar hardware to the N5?
Yeah, I guess I'll just get an N5.

If you cant wait (until nexus 6 is released), i would suggest new htc one or lg g2. Lg g2 has a great screen size, its sharp, but too saturated cartoonish colors, if you like that. Awesome battery, 5,6 hours of screen on time, great camera. it has a great devs support but its not working as smooth as nexus 5. So in order: nexus 6, new htc one, lg g2 (or nexus 5 if you really like aosp and smoothness).

Tomorrow I'm selling my beloved nexus 4 and getting the nexus 5. As much as I'm happy because I'm getting the new nexus, I'm a little bit sad, of all phones I have had, n4 was my favourite. But I expect n5 to take its place I spent so many hours reading and posting in these threads, I'm feeling melancholic (I'm crazy, I know). Goodbye to you all, hope to see you in the n5 threads!

I heard so as well.
Hardware and Price definitly make it a great Phone.
After a quick personal test I have to say coming from a Stock/Custom Rom the UI is really ugly, but there are custom Roms.
OFF: Just saw that the 4 years old iPhone 4 got the latest version of iOS and it runs awesome considering the specs of the phone (tested my self). I wander if Google "got it"?

So? My equally-4-year-old HTC Vision runs KitKat. I mean, sure, Apple officially released their latest OS for the iPhone 4 (and hopefully the performance will be acceptable this time) but I've never run a shipping ROM on any device I've owned since my original iPhone, anyway, so the crappy long term support of Android device manufacturers not a big deal for me. Also, there seems to be a lot of pro-Apple sentiment for long-term device support but I don't think that's a gesture of kindness or 'different' business behaviour to other manufacturers. Really, they have to keep support, since they keep crummy old devices on the market a lot longer than other manufacturers. I know a few people who still have remaining months on two year contracts with iPhone 4s, but I'm fairly certain that's not going to be the case with any Android handset which was launched around the same time.
Incidentally, I think I've settled on the G2. Given that the cost to me will be the same with an N5 or a G2, it seems silly not to go for the bigger battery, (much) contrastier screen and better camera since I'll run CM/AOSP either way. It means dealing with nasty Samsung-like glossy plastic, but given that it's already good, I'm thinking the battery life ought to be insane once all the LG OEM crap is gone

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's feeling weirdly reminiscent about replacing my Mako... Usually I'm terribly excited to get my mitts on a new device, but this time I'm just left wondering how I'll cope if I don't like whatever I replace it with as much
I think lg makes the best short term support phones.
They wont see life beyond 4.4.2. I wouldnt buy a lg without checking the activity in the xda forum. Because lg is very crappy updating the android, and if theres no support from the comunity, because of a locked bootloader, for example, then its all over.

I think (perhaps too optimistically) that all the current Qualcomm-based devices are so similar that even after LG give up, some form of CM/AOSP support is pretty much a given. Especially given the shared roots with the Nexus 5...

That's what we're seing in the Optimus G forum. The development follows the lead of N4, but not at the same pace. My GF has one and simply love the lg UI and the miniapps. But the device is great and stuck in the 4.1.1
There's a lot of great devs there, like XboxfanJ, and many many others doing a great job porting things out, but it's a shame that LG is failing to provide a update to any other android version. Even 4.3 would be great in that device.
I had to root my GF Optimus G just to use fstrim, because it was becoming laggy as hell. And while google is doing a magnificent job puting the Gapps avaible in the playstore, she misses some nice features, like the notifications listener, or immersive mode, but at the same time, being with the device since november of 2013 (here in brazil mid class people just have to be one generation or two behind every single eletronic stuff, because they are expensive as hell) she doesn't want to void the warranty.
The really bad thing about LG is that they launch their flagships with old android versions, update short after the relase and then go with the excuse that the device has already seen a major upgrade.
OG came with 4.0 and then was updated to 4.1
LG Flex came with 4.2
G2 came with 4.2
And that's the way they do their business.
If I were you, I'd wait about a month longer. See if the new Google Edition phones start popping up. I quite like Samsung's hardware, but their support absolutely sucks. For me, SGS5 GPE would solve that issue.

No, I literally will not buy Samsung hardware on principle. I've seen too many dead S2s, notes, S3s, etc. That is a company with zero concept of quality control, to keep releasing b0rked eMMC controllers, generation after generation. Plus, if you begin to read the CM device managers' posts on Exynos support, you see what a ****ty attitude they have for the development community, even if most current devices are Qualcomm based and a lot easier to work with. Plus I'm not and never have been enamoured with their hardware in general. Sadly, the G2 looks and feels like a Samsung, but I guess I'll have to live with that. Oh, and what good is a GPE unless you're buying your device outright? AFAIK a Nexus 5 is the only chance you have of getting a shipping 'stock' android device here on contract.
Edit: I reaslise I probably came across as a bit of an arse in this post. Sorry, Samsung make me angry. It might be worth waiting for the new HTC One but I'm fairly certain the camera will be rubbish and it still has a small screen with a massive bezel (or it's a massive device, not sure which )

Hmm, it's a nice theory. But you could easily end up waiting forever with that outlook. The G3 isn't even rumoured to come out for several months yet, else I'd be waiting for that. And the Nexus 6 (I doubt the name unless it's a phablet... It'll probably be a new Nexus 5) is sure to come even later, the Nexus launches haven't exactly been immediate availability gigs, have they? By the time that come out, people will tell me to wait for the Samsung GS6 and so on. Mobile phones are launched so close together that anything you buy will be 'obsolete' a month later. Frankly, I could gladly live with my Nexus 4 for another 2 years. The only reason I'm replacing it at all is to give it to somebody else. So with what is available now, it seems pretty clear to me that a G2 will do the job just fine.

People shouldn't tell you what to do, they can only make a suggestion. It's about what you want from your phone. If you want software optimized with hardware, get most recent updates and roll the smoothest devices on market, go with nexus line. My brother has LG g2 and with that beast of cpu and gpu, it's much slower then my nexus 4 (on both aosp rooms and lg ones). I would never buy g2 just because of that. Also Samsung devices, bloat bloat bloat, and sluggishness. I would buy n5 in no time because I want speed and fast updates, and a camera to take quick and decent pictures. Yeah battery is a little bit weak but, there are kernels for that

Hello! New Nexus 5 user.

Wow. I upgraded today from a Galaxy S3 to a Nexus 5. In my 4 hours of using this phome, I have loved every second. One complaint is the speakers. While playing San Amdreas, holding the device blocked the speakers. Any suggestions? Otherwise, this puts my S3 to shame. I called 3 different T-Mobile stores and only one of them in my area actually had one in stock. I was able to get this wonderful device for a mere $27 as the taxes are up front. Anyway, goodbye Scamsung Crapaxy S3. Hello Nexus 5. I say scam cuz

The N5 a year later is still an amazing device. So amazing, that after selling my first one about 6 months ago, I ended up buying another one a month or so ago. The damn thing is fast as hell and buttery smooth, and performs just as well as anything else out there. You made a great purchase, and I hope you enjoy the heck out of it.
As far as the speakers are concerned, it's annoying but it is what it is. I'm used to it, because I'm also an iPhone user and they've always had the same problem. I've learned to adjust my grip so the speaker isn't covered, but it's still annoying. One thing I can recommend, is that you buy a Moga Pro Power controller. I have one for Android, and I also have the Moga Rebel for my iPhone 6, which is essentially the same thing. If you aren't familiar with it, it's just a game pad, but it has a built in clip to hold the phone. No speaker blockage, and gaming with a controller takes things to a completely different level. It works awesome with the N5 and good news for you- San Andreas has native support for it. Check it out- http://www.mogaanywhere.com/controllers/propower
I also hate how my hand covers the speaker when gaming in landscape mode. If I hold the phone so that doesn't happen, it just feels awkward. Other than that, loving this phone, still.
Welcome here! Quite an upgrade from an S3 I had one way back. The N5 is a superb phone imo. I've been on it since launch day and it continues to satisfy my gadget addiction even 1 year later! Enjoy it
Yeah. So much faster than an S3. Even with CM offsetting the crappiness of it. TouchWiz was too slow and unusable. I hope to have this device until I can buy a OnePlus One from T-Mobile. But that'll never happen. I can't believe how smooth and seamless everything is on this phone.
Thanks. I have heard of those controllers before. I will have to look into buying one eventually. I have a USB OTG cable so I can already use an Xbox controller if I want to.
I just upgraded from my Nexus 4 to Nexus 5 . . Don't regret that decision . . . The nexus 4 is still a decent device but I was itching to have the nexus 5 , lovely experience I've had with the n4 and the n5 enhances it further. Oneplus One will be my next upgrade or its successor because the chipset is 32bit and will not fully take advantage of L's 64bit support.
I had an htc one x tegra 3 which has cost me almost 45€ monthly. Now i have a n5 which is by a longshot better and have 30€ per month... Same data and call plan btw... Logic?
I had two GS4 which are hw damaged without any reason, couple days ago i buyed this device really can't complain on anything except cam recorder audio and some sw issues with my first installed rom(Mahdi). Also still can't believe what ppl on youtube saying for N5 battery life because for me it's better than on GS4.Really great device a lot of faster than Touchwiz.

Turn phone 90degrees clockwise instead of counter clock wise. This way speaker is a the top making it less prone to being covered.
N5 has 1 speaker only. The other one is a microphone.
Use this app and those settings. Makes the phone a bit louder.

Oh wait u have a nexus 6 ?
Using less than a day
Im just experiencing my first 24h of this amazing device. I was a bit confused between HTC One M7 ( must mention its look and build quality ) and N5, but the purple tint camera problem of M7 and the too damn high price point was ruined all of my expectation. Eventually bought the N5, 16G with Nillkin case and clear screen protector.
I was a Xperia Ray user for more than 2 years. Surely, no need to mention the performance and storage boost, but that Ray was a beauty I must say (still using it).
Im from Bangladesh. Here Nexus are not that available and we cant order it through any carrier. I want to check the IMEI for originality for this device. Is there any sort of website can do that online? Hoping to have the best from this device. Currently the plan is to use it like OTB for 1 or some months, after that will need to unlock it and see its full potential ( atleast for Viper).

+1. No more blockage issue for me ever since I started doing this many months ago. Most games/apps should auto rotate accordingly.

I prefer my S2 Hercules to the S3. Lol My M8 had to get sent in for warranty repair and I was given an unrooted of course, S3 as a loaner. Was a brutal downgrade. Lol
My rooted S2 danced circles around the S3. So yes, going from an S3 to an N5 would be a great upgrade! Enjoy! ?

[Q] any regrets?

Greetings All,
I'm on a Note 3 right now, and Monday or Tuesday it's time for my upgrade. I'm torn between a Note 4 and the Nexus 6. The last 3 devices I owned were Note 3, Galaxy S4, and Galaxy S2. I'm really looking to switch it up here, and step back from Samsung for a little while. The Nexus 6 is my first choice right now, seeing as the Note 3 has me pretty spoiled with the large screen and the s-pen. I guess my question would be, since I've been seeing mixed reviews for Nexus 6 around the web, does anyone here have any regrets buying this device so far? And if so, are any regrets stone cold deal breakers, or just minor issues? I'm really looking at giving "vanilla" android (if that's even such thing on xda) a run, and I've heard that the Nexus devices have had the most and best development as far as that goes. So I guess I'm asking if there's any major problems with the Nexus 6 that is not being mentioned in a standard review, before I go scoop one up in the next day or two. Many thanks in advance...
My only gripe with this device is the poor cell signal. My phone is constantly searching for a signal and it is really impacting my battery life. Other than that I am happy with this device, hopefully T-Mobile pushes the OTA update for WiFi Calling soon.
no regrets here. want unlockable, rootable device that I can do as I want with. this is my first Nexus device. got it from Moto direct. on VZW
have generally had moto devices in the past and like their overall solid construction.
like Samsung devices but they are always a but flimsy IMHO.
None at all, I came from my 2 G3's (D850 and F460) and haven't looked back. My wife liked my Nexus so much (except the size) she wanted a Moto X 2014 so I bought her one. This so hands down my favorite phone so far
If u get the nexus use HDR+ on your camera day and night looks amazing. I thought I would miss Samsung but I don't . I miss the knock on. With the g3 but that's something I can put on the nexus
My only regret was not buying this phone sooner.
I'd only have a regret if something with otherwise the same specs but a smaller screen came out within a month of release; I guess I also regret switching to T-Mobile right before release but that's a different issue.

If you have the time to tinker and are willing to wait for things to get fixed or turned into features, this is the phone for you. If you have been using Samsung devices and think you will get anything close to the features Samsung adds, especially to their Note line, forget it. One thing the Nexus will help you see and appreciate is all the care and hard work that goes into their overlay. Things you may have thought were standard user options turn out to be features of branded manufactured phones. I have much respect for the care that Sammy and LG and even HTC puts in their phones now that I'm pure Vanilla. So, yes// there are definitely some trade offs I was unaware of.

Not sure if I should go with nexus or not

You are asking in the Nexus forums, . I had the Samsung S2, Note 2, Note 3. I decided a change was in order and got the Nexus 6. LOVING IT!! I don't ever see myself going back to Samsung and touchwiz (as gorgeous the edge is). I can't stress enough the vanilla experience of Android and how fluid the N6 is. The lack of bloat, ease of root, flashing, etc...Nexus all the way.
I will say it looks like Samsung really stepped up their game with the S6 series, now if these were Google versions, that would be a tougher choice for me, but I still love the 5.96 screen.
Yes I've never been a fan when my wife had her Galaxy 2 but the new 6 edge looks nice and the specs are nice. I Asked in the nexus forum for input from people who have switched from Samsung and would have opinions of both.
Get a nexus I've seen a bunch of reviews that say the edge isn't worth the extra 100 dollar price tag and that its gimmicky most reviews say get a reg s6 I went nexus from the s4 cuz I'm tired of att locking bootloaders took me all of 10 mins to get cm12 running on this thing and to remove the 6 att spamware items
For me, it's all about the bootloaders. N6

If you love to flash get a nexus because I'm pretty sure Samsung is still shipping with know and those Samsung devices are loosing a lot of devs because of it. For the note 4 sprint and T-Mobile are the only carrier that's still kinda surviving in the development options while at&t and Verizon are struggling last I checked unless Verizon makes a development version.
Nexus 6 will hold it's ground this device is great, I was waiting for the LG G Flex 2 but with all the negative reviews and rumors I jumped on my first nexus device and had got a great deal for a brand new sprint sealed variant and have no regret plus I still have my upgrade so when the new nexus comes out I'm jumping on it lol.
I've had the Galaxy Nexus (VZW) then after 2 years upgraded to the S4 after seeing the huge dev outpour, turns out it was impossible to rom, so after I was eligible to upgrade with VZWs EDGE upgrade plan, I jumped back to the Nexus. My point is I have had 2 nexus phones and a samsung phone, Nexus hands down is the way to go.
Thanks guys that is what I was figuring, you guys just helped seal the deal now the end of month can't come any sooner
Nexus
I appreciated TouchWiz value-adds on my Galaxy S III and like how they've integrated with Lollipop on my spouse's Galaxy S5 (which is very responsive, btw).
A friend of the family is a Samsung product specialist for a local Verizon reseller and has been nothing but frustrated with his Note 4 (which was on my short list of possible phones . . . based solely on specifications and online reviews); I saw up-close that it was having problems that any phone can have + more. It has wonderful features, but is vexing him weekly with weird drops in signal and hangs/reboots.
All my prior Android devices were Sense and Touchwiz-enhanced. The Nexus 6 experience is like flying with a very solid custom ROM that has just what I need, in comparison. Sure, I might want to root for tethering or such some day, but Android OS 5.1 is meeting all my needs, thus far. And, I *can* unlock, root, etc. at will, too - lost some of those abilities with the Galaxy S III after an OS upgrade. At my pace, not the carrier's.
Nexus 6 is a great size for me, I don't ever want to go smaller if that can be avoided. It has a growth path based on easy ability to apply future stock or custom ROMs, and its hardware has been satisfying to use.
I'm sure the Edge will be a terrific phone, but there will be differences and you should probably consider what's most important to you, feature-wise.

You answered your question right there. The easiest to root, direct updates from Google, NO TOUCHWIZ.
I had a S2, N4 and now the N6 and I can not see myself ever going back to a non-Nexus. The phones are smooth as can be. Just think about it, Lollipop was basically designed to showcase the abilities of the N6, here come the flames. Simply put, if you want 100% flexibility of customization and you like the idea of a fast device built for the OS that it runs, you have to go Nexus.
KI came from the m8 and I was mainly worried about the battery with the N6 but its fine. From the early reports I've seen on the s6 battery life I would not get it. Very happy with the Nexus so far. Had mine unlocked, rooted, and running builds a couple hours after it arrived.

I bought a Note 4, and then a few months later sold it for a Nexus 6. I loved the Note 4, but everything, and I do mean EVERYTHING was limited. It's all heavily locked down and restricted. The Nexus 6 is pure, and totally open. You can do anything you want. There are no restrictions, and there is absolutely nothing holding you back. The best part: Carrier Freedom. You don't have to stick to anyone. You can do whatever you like, whenever you like, no Knox, no history, no questions. I had a Samsung N2, N3 and N4, and loved them all, but the Nexus 6 has changed my perspective of freedom. If something breaks, there is a fix. If you want a new feature, developers hear you and fix it. If you want to design your own ROM, there's a guide for that. If you want pure updates straight from Google and no bloatware, it's there with no strings attached. Want a remarkably easy toolkit to do everything you could ever desire on your device? Done! Twice over even! The Nexus 6 is the only flagship ANDROID device because it is exactly that, ANDROID. I would highly recommend it to you and anyone else.
Here's a chart I saw that might help.
You mention liking to flash ROMs, so I'd go with Nexus 6. Seems like with Samsung using Exynos SOC in the S6 and the touchwiz framework mucking things up you'll never get as good performance on a custom AOSP based rom with things like camera, bluetooth and Wifi since Samsung , in the past at least, has not been forthcoming with drivers.
I'd just wait for the upcoming Nexus to be released. It's looking like it will be based on the upcoming LG G4. In my opinion, why buy a phone that will soon be last year's news? Not taking anything away from the Nexus 6, I love it. It's the best phone I've ever owned. The Nexus 6 is not an old phone, but we both know that something better is right around the corner.

Iv had android since the vey first android up until 2 years ago I wnt with iPhone. My contract is up and I want to come back to android I miss widgets and flashing roms. So I've been looking between the nexus 6 and Galaxy 6 edge. Can you guys tell me why one or the other? I'm on Verizon if that matters and I know the edge isn't released yet but the specs look nice.

I was a blackberry person for a long time when smartphones first came out. I later bought a cheap metro android. Since then i've had a Samsung Galaxy S3, an iPhone 5, LG G2, and now i have a nexus 6. I went from the S3 because i wanted to try something different. I got bored with different. The iphone isn't customizable at all. So i went back to droid and the G2 is a beast but the nexus 6 is a bigger beast. Go with the nexus. It may not have all the cool features that an S6 has but you probably wont use all those features anyways. Nexus 6 is stock with the essentials plus its for a more technologically savvy person that understands specs and performance. Im not hating on the S6 i know it has great specs too but its a phone everyone will have.
don't see all the fuss……
I jumped on t-mo from a note 4 to N6. I've been using sammy products sine 2011, including all the note series, with a g3 and opo for good measure.
The samsung devices were easy to root, coming unlocked from t-mobile. The note 4 has considerable development on a t-mo sub forum. I flashed several times a week and edited build. prop and mixer. path files to further customize my experience.
Oh, and touchwiz was not the monster it's made out to be. I use apex launcher, which on the note 4 is a similar experience to the N6.
I will say samsung is rightly blamed for bloat and some wicked lags, something I have yet to see on shamoo.
I'll say I'm enjoying my nexus, but all this endless chatter about the "pure android" is nonsense from my perspective.
So, if someone asks if the note 4 or Nexus 6 would be my choice, I'd go with the N6, but maybe because I haven't had much time on it so far. Then again, it's a matter of unlocked bootloader with the right carrier. (T-Mobile)
Don't think I'm going to regret my choice.
I have the LG G3 and I can say this is the best phone I have ever had! Believe it or not even better after running Lollipop
