You better check yourself before you wreck yourself... Or your device!
Buuuuuuuuuutttttt....
The easiest way I know is to unlock the bootloader, install a custom recovery, then make a backup of your stock setup, then flash a stock ROM.
Everything else is an unnecessary pain in the butt... unless you value OTAs.

[Q] Registering custom flashed Hero on Sprint Network

I recently upgraded my phone and gave my trusty Hero to an out of town girlfriend. She went to sprint today to have it activated and was unable to get it done. She tells me they attempted to register it on the network but were unable to do so. They say this is because it is rooted and flashed with a custom Rom.
It has the July 08 ASOP rom by jaybob. If anyone can give me any help, I'd be greatly appreciated. I'm wondering if I need to talk her through the process of returning to stock.
Thanks in advance
You need a sense based rom I'm pretty sure.

If you want her to have a completely stock, unrooted phone, you need to "ruu" it. You will find the ruu file and instructions in the development section.
Other than that, you can flash any sense-based rom (infinite fx's, liquid's), and that will let you activate it also.
If she will be taking it into the sprint store, I recommend ruu, tho.

I had no idea that you needed a sense based rom. I'll talk her through flashing it. Quick related question. I am using clockwork recovery. I am under the impression I may not be able to properly flash a sense based rom with this. Or am I absolutely wrong.
Thanks,
You guys are saviors.
they need epst in the dialer and diag witch is only in stock sense roms.

I may be Wrong but you should be able to Activate it over the phone... I think Sprints number is 1-800-639-6111! Also if I were you I'd probably do what the others Advised and Flash a Sense based Rom, Try LiquidSense, or the Fresh Roms are Also pretty Good!
Good Luck!

Kudos to you for being interested in rooting :good:
Shiromaru already answered the question here but why would you choose to remain on STOCK??? In the Android Development Thread of the HTC Incredible S, we have a TON of ROMs for use. They can be ICS with Sense 3.6. There can be AOSP or AOKP ICS. Theres Sense 4.X with ICS. Theres AOSP Jellybean 4.1.1 to 4.2.2. Theres really a lot to try. If you want to keep the (****y (excuse my language)) Sense 3.6 then u can try ARHD which is very stable. Theres also Blackout ROM and Incredible Bliss. If you want Sense 4.X you can try Nik_Project_X_Rebirth or Sabsa Prime. All of these ROMs have been modified to improve youre over all experience on the phone. I really would suggest you flash a custom ROM.

I tried reflashing but same happened again.

Try niks Rom v3.0 it works fine for me,good battery life + super fast performance with lil overclock
Sent from my HTC Incredible S
Rooting via htcdev will not give you s_off. That means every time you install a custom Rom you have manually flash the boot image using a utility called fastboot. And you can't change radios either. However for an initial root experience go right ahead with htcdev method and once you are comfortable you may follow guides in how to downgrade and then get root and soff using the revolutionary method. You may then also want to change your bootloader.
If you are going to root your phone then it makes no sense (pun intended) to remain with stock Rom. And as listed here in earlier post there are a plethora of roms to choose from.
Welcome to the joys of the android world.

Firmware downgrading

Hi
I'm currently running ARHD 20.1 and my battery life is kinda lower than it was on 13.3 so I wanna flash back the old version. The thing is, I updated to the latest firmware and I need to know if there will be any problem if I just flash back the previous 2.24 firmware and then flash ARHD 13.3.
Im currently s-off and supercid.
Any thoughts? Thanks

Since you're S-off, you won't have any problems downgrading your firmware, it should work fine. You don't have to downgrade your firmware to run a 4.22 rom tho it's not a bad idea. It's up to you
Thanks a lot for your fast reply.
Okay so im safe on that topic. Same applies to any google edition firmware right?
I'm thinking about downgrading to official 2.24 since I don't know for sure if the battery is affected by the new base or the rom. What would you recommend?
I might even try the ARHD 3.2 GE but I'm not sure if I must flash the GE firmware for that to work as it's intended.

I'm not as sure with the GE stuff, but since you are just looking to last a GE based rom rather than doing a full GE conversion, you should be fine. I am using the 3.06 GE firmware with a 4.22 Sense rom with no issues

Ahh didn't know that I could use a GE firmware on any sense rom. Maybe ill try the 3.06 firmware to see if battery life improves somehow.
Thanks again x2

You can flash GE ROMs and Sense ROMs on the base you are on with no need to upgrade or downgrade. GE is on 4.3 which is officially released and it works just fine on lower bases, same goes with the Sense ROMs based on the leeked 4.3 ... You don't need to do a full conversion to run GE and you don't need to change your firmware to run anything I mentioned (you can if you want of course lol).
The full conversion is of benefit if you want to receive OTA's from Google but not required to experience GE in its fullest, plus Devs always update their ROMs quickly after a new version is released so you can always stay up to date.
Updating firmware can be beneficial with new features and improvements etc but if you just want to flash different ROMs, it's not a must, just an option.

[Q] wifi shows error after installing nameless rom

my apologies if this question has been asked before but since i couldnt find it anywhere so i am posting now:
this is my first time rooting an android device and that too coz recently my htc desire c had become super slow so i unlocked bootloader and downloaded the hasoon2000 tool but after the recovery step i was totally lost on how to flash kernel and all so i switched to superboot and i successfully rooted my phone.
now i wanted to install a rom so i chose nameless rom but the instructions were so confusing and i messed up. i couldn't install it and then my phn wnt start so i went back to hasoon2000 and flashed kernel using the boot.img from the nameless rom and my phn was back up but my wifi is not on anymore. its says error and i saw that my mac address was gone. then i tried again installing the rom and this time i did successfully install it but my wifi is gone
i have two questions:
1. how can i get my wifi back in this rom?
2. can i install any other rom and if i do then will i get my wifi back?

Click on the second link in my signature.. Look for Prometheus Sense Kernel there. Flash that using fastboot, (or the toolkit) and your wifi should be back.

The 'method' to install any ROM is the same and its not difficult. And there is no such thing as a best rom. It's just personal preferences. So if you like HTC Sense, then go for Revolution or Sensational Rom. And if you like a more 'Nexus-like' feel then we've got a lot of JB Roms for you. JB ROMs are believed to be faster than Sense ROMs in general.
So just look at threads of the different ROMs and once you decide to install, download it. I'm running Cyanogenmod 10 right now. I've been using it for a long while now. It was the first JB rom made for this phone and all the other ROMs are made using this as a base..
We even have Samsung-like and Xperia-like Roms. So if you're interested in that, have a look.
And for Sense, Sensational ROM V4 is the most up to date ROM we have. It has a Sense 5 feel to it..
Hope that helps a bit. One more thing - never ask for best rom or best kernel. It's bad manners. But we can understand as you're new..

Help with picking right custom rom

Hi guys! I am right now stuck at miui rom 5 and wonder what is a good custom rom instead? I don't know about the s-on s-off thingy right now but I believe I have the "bad" thing that is not good for custom.
What would be the easiest rom to jump over to? I am planning on selling the phone later so I guess something that looks more like stock and maybe have updates etc?
