When it comes to making calls, I've always been more of a number dialing person. I only look through the contact list for the people I call less often. And back in my old Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus, the dialer app had this cool feature where I would put in 3 or 4 numbers and it would autocomplete the rest.
The stock dialer of my Moto X (4.2.2 still, didn't want to jump to 4.4.2, might switch to 4.4.3 later) does NOT autocomplete my numbers, which is very inconvenient.
is there a good dialer app out there with this function? Hopefully one that does not steal and upload my contact list into some server.
Thanks!

Just a heads up, (although you probably already know this) 4.4.x onward does have the autocomplete dialer.
Regardless, if you're looking for a solid dialer app, I can recommend both Dialer+ and exDialer. Both are nice replacements.
Just a heads up though, if you want dialer+, you need contacts+ which "isn't compatible" with the Moto X (at least mine). You can download the apk here.
ExDialer seems exactly like what I needed. Thank you!

Since you already have the paid version. How well is it integrated ? looks like you still need to go in the app to make outgoing calls via google voice. does it share the contacts from the phone or do you have the transfer your contact book to google voice online ?
Go voice is very nice. But I don't think o can use it as phone Vmail.

Bottom line, you're not going to get google voice integration like it is in Android.
That said, GoVoice is a solid application.
It can access your phone's contact list and from the dialer part of the application and you can choose to text or call the person you selected from your contacts list.
You can also carry on threaded text conversations from your google voice inbox via GoVoice.
The only downside is that you don't get notifications from the App when you get a new SMS or voicemail. You can work around those limitations using google voice settings, though..
i.e. you can have it forward your SMS messages to your actual nuimber and you can reply to texts from the native SMS app and have it come from your google voice number to the recipient and you can have Google sms you or e-mail you when you get a voicemail from somebody.
It's not ideal.. but if you want ideal as far as Google Voice support, Android is the only real answer. Perhaps later the developer will be able to set information for live tiles so you can keep track that way.

Thanks for the detailed answer looking forward to seeing next version from the developers
GoVoice is slow and laggy. No push notification as mentioned. can't make calls out still. I have sent the developer an email stating such. There is a way that he sets up a certain number to use to not be charged the international calls. Not a good work around. I did pay for it.
I hope that Google Voice makes it way to the Marketplace. I use it to dial out to China, El Salvador and Vietnam. Comes in really handy.
GV companion is not in the marketplace. He is currently working on it. I think that will be a better app.

Really we can not make any outgoing calls using this APP then it is useless.

This has not been my experience, also a paid user of the app here, my time with the app has been more like the longer reply than this one I've quoted.

I wish I could say the same thing. But if you look at the preview beta video of the GV companion it has so much more functionality. It has been over 35 days since he has tweeted. I am wondering what is happening with the final WP7. I sent a tweet to him and an email. I hope to hear from him soon.
U can use gvoice as default Vmail! Enter gvoice in phone settings.

One of the features of the Moto X that I've been looking forward to most is the Assist app, which can - among other things - read text messages to you while you're driving. However I'm a Google Voice user, and I'm not sure if that feature integrates with Voice, or if it will only work with messages received through the standard messaging app on the phone.
Does anyone know if these two play nice together?
Not out of box
Ok so Assist has no options to tell it what messaging app to read from. So, it does not integrate with Voice. However, if you have enabled the feature which sends messages to you regular app from Voice then it should read them. However, I imagine that you probably do not have it set up this way.
Until someone comes up with a Voice+ option for stock Android it probably won't work.
tl;dt No.
I think google has lost interest in Google Voice. I can see it coming up on the chopping block in the future. They already got a treasure trove of voicemails to train their voice recognition technology on, so they no longer have anything interesting to gain from supporting the service. Like Google Reader (RIP), it is a very useful service that has no way of generating real revenue for Google.
The lack of MMS support is already killing it for me. Once the iphone started sending all multiple-recipient texts as MMS, it meant I would miss important messages (with no notification that I missed it and no notification to the sender that I never got it). This wasn't a big deal when it meant I missed silly photos from people's camera phones, but now I miss real messages.
Now they are releasing fancy new features like Assist, that don't even work with Voice.
I wonder if there is a way to swap my phone numbers. Can I move my GV number to my AT&T account and my AT&T number to google voice? I like my GV number better, and it is local to my city, but a lot of people still use my "real" number due to both the MMS issue and the fact that I only got GV in 2009.
Disappointing, but not totally unexpected. Oh well. Thanks for checking!

I have no inside knowledge, but chances are Google Voice is not going away in the near future. In fact, they are integrating it with Hangouts. There is a war waging over control over the means of users messaging and there is no way Google is going to just give that up.

Google might own Motorola but that doesn't mean that Motorola IS Google. This is Moto's feature and I don't even see why they would have integrated it with Voice honestly.

You can port your number out of Google Voice just like you can port numbers into it.
Coming from Samsung, I'm finding the Google contacts list pretty lame. What are you guys using that is well organized and smooth?

I replaced the the stock people, dialer, & messaging programs with Dialer+, Contacts+, & Messages +. All primarily because the dialer opens to the quick dial screen which auto-populates with frequent and recent callers rather than what I want.

Thanks.. I like
the stock dialer in the moto x second gen shows all my contacts in the people section and it is very annoying. I have over 1,000 total contacts due to a very large email system I have for work. Obviously this is annoying as I have to sort thorough all of them. I can use voice but for making sales calls for work you can forget about somebody.
all the kit kat custom roms I ran on my GS3 all only showed the contacts with numbers. in fact every dialer app I have ever used automatically filters only the contacts with numbers. why is it doing this and is there a work around so i can use the stock dialer and not use an aftermarket one. so far simpler calender is the only dialer close to the stock one in look and feel.
i've seen some mention of using the nexus dialer on the phone but not even sure if i go through all that it would make a difference as not sure if its a lollipop issue or just Moto.
Hi, some inconvenients with lollipop
Hello, i was a jellybean user for 2 years, i recently got a moto g 2015 lollipop and have some issues, related to the lollipop so i assume this is the right place even if it is for motog 2014.
theres 3 issues i can't figure out,
1) I have to add a goggle account to the android for it to work with everything right? i mean, the PlayStore app and ****.
For that, i have always used a hotmail address ive had for years which is linked to youtube, facebook etc..
But this lollipop, decided to add a single contact entry for each and all of the emails ive emailed with that account.
Its effin annoying. So i deleted all the contacts I didn't want there, and went to settings-accounts and disabled its SYNC
on that hotmail address. I did that yesterday, and today all the email address contacts were added again today. Wtf
I don't want to create a new clean email account just for the android because I do want my youtube subscriptions alerts.
So what to do?
2) On my previous android device, the jellybean, If i want to delete a whole bunch of contacts. I could check a box next to each of a contact, and select a whole lot, then just hit a DELETE button. In lollipop, the only way is to manually go by one by one of the contacts. select contact, select its details, hit delete. thats a 3click process for ONE contact. I mean. wtf are these guys thinking? Is there a workaround for this?
3) Last but not least. Say i got a missing call on the call registry. And i want to send a message either SMS or whatsapp to that number. In jellybean I could hit the send message button and it would ask me if I wanted to SMS or Whatsapp. AND VOILA. write the message to the number and send it.
In lollipop, theres no message button to numbers that aren't in your contact list. WTF .. I have to add that number to contacts. And then, a send text message button appears next to the name but it only works for SMS, no whatsapp. If i want to whatsapp that number, i'd need open whatsapp and search that newly added entry thru 200 contacts.
i mean seriously. what the **** are these developers thinking.
Sorry for rant. Hope someone has some solutions
Thanks in advance.
Hmmmm I completely understand all the issues and they're all kind of related to the Contacts app on STOCK Lollipop ( stock in caps because its just a truth that skinned versions of Android actually do a better job in their respective dialer and contacts apps or at least that's my experience) and what I've personally done to alleviate some of my contacts issues is to use Contacts+ from the play store. It merges all of your contacts with similar traits etc instead of having 5 different contacts for emails that should be grouped to their respective contact. It also has good organization features. I personally have it set to only show contacts with phone numbers. You can play around with the app and see if you like it. Its also a messaging app and a dialer so an all in one app but I prefer to use it as a contacts app only since I have better alternatives for the others. Check it out. Maybe it'll help and this is not a promo Lol its just that I've personally dealt with this and heard of contacts + and here we are.
