XZ Won't Start Unless connected to USB - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys I have strange situation with my Xperia Z.
XZ won't start and load OS unless connected to a charger! When unplugged XZ gets to SONY logo, or animation or briefly boots and then dies. Battery is FULL. I've charged it over the nights.
When connected to a USB charger it starts normally and works until disconnected from charger. Then dies after 5-30 sec.
I am experiencing this behaviour after OTA update to newest firmware 10.5.A.0.230. Previously I had rooted 10.4.1.B.0.101 which worked perfectly.
I have tried to flash 4 different ROMs and with all of them XZ dies unless connected to USB charger.
Finally I’ve managed to get restore to original 10.4.1.B.0.101 but still same behaviour.
Please help! I cannot find any similar issues on forum. Tnx!

I bought the battery from eBay and changed it myself... Working like a charm now, the downside is I lost the water-resistant feature... But hey, as long as the phone working find is good enough...

I think he means that when he plugs his phone in charging, the phone does not switches itself off..

why would it turn off when you charge it?
I am not following the conversation here at all....I thought he had a wifi issue, not a charging issue

Hi mate,
As per my understanding, he has an issue under which the phone automatically switches Itself off when tried to connect to a wifi network but it does not switches itself off when the phone is connected to the charger.
(The phone has sufficient charge)

Thanks for your reply. I said, when I connect with adapter, XV works normally with Mobile data, but when I unplug, it works some more minute and shut down >.<
I started to get the very same problems yesterday after what I think was an overheating issue.
Phone shuts down even if it's cold after mobile network is turned on. If I plug in the charger it will start and connect mobile network just fine and work for as long as the charger is in - unplug and it shuts down almost instantly.
If I have the charger in and switch to flightmode it works without the charger for a long time (didn't drain it but it went in flightmode for over an hour without problem). As soon as I turn off flight mode it shuts down. The battery level also is very "jumpy" and odd, feels like it is some combination of battery and mobile network.
Not sure if turning on mobile network makes the overheat thing spike and shut down. Also if I start the phone in regular mode without a simcard in it works fine.
Whenever the mobile network is involved it doesn't work for very long. Anyone else have similar experience and found a solution? I've ordered a new battery to see if it has something to do with the battery.
Also sounds like a similar issue in this thread talk.sonymobile.com/thread/127495?start=10&tstart=0
An update to this, I performed a wipe with PCC and got the latest version, problem still there with random shut downs. Then I replaced the battery and everything is working perfectly for hours. No shut downs or random reboots like it would do when just turning on the screen or similar.
So it seems this (for me) was a battery issue with explains why the battery % went up and down as the phone shut down, and it started to occur after the phone getting overheated (by the looks) so the battery probably got seriously messed up at that time.

To me it seems like it is a sudden death problem.... You should send it to sony for repair.
Does the LED blinks bright red? If so, it could be either battery problem or hard brick...
For battery problem, charging the phone while turned off for a few hours should fix it. But then you said you had charged it for almost a day. Most likely a hard brick..... Sony would just charge you hundreds of $$ for swapping the motherboard...

Is it possible that the phone has been hard brick even it wasnt rooted at all? Yeah i try to bring it to sony center they say that it is a software problem. if its a software problem maybe they will just flash the stock rom on it. I am trying to fix it but no luck....

It may be possible, because Xperia V's battery problem is really widespread. The voltage control inside the battery can be easily fried after prolonged overheating (yes I learnt it the hard way) and XV is very prone to overheating.
My XV's battery died after a night of continuos overheating caused by normal charging... then the phone would suddenly turn off without any warning. The problem gets worse each day and only disappears when I bought a new battery.
I would suggest trying a new battery pack and see if it fixes... because if you do bring it to Sony, they would charge you insane amount of $$ if it's no longer covered by warranty

Don't worry mate, as long as you have warranty they won't charge you. If it will cost you anything they will give you a cost estimate

[Q] Problems with xperia z connection and charging

I recently bought a used xperia z and have some strange problems with it.
I cant get it to connect to my computers. Ive got 2 that dont detect it but have no issues connecting my old xperia ray, so drivers are installed.
I cant charge the phone unless it drains completely. If i try to charge it while its on it will recognize the charge for an instant then not charge. If its off then itll show the battery icon and all looks normal, but will actually discharge, then charge.
Flashtool wont recognize it at all. No matter what i try, cant get it to connect.
Ive seatched and cant find any help. Im hoping ive missed something.
Thanks in advance!

Bro !! Many of us has this problem. I'm among them. First battery doesnot charge ( charges for 1 second and then shows not charging ) . After some time when battery drains completely it will not boot and not charges. At last u need to connect to charger to boot ur mobile. As soon as you'll remove charger ur device shut's down. It's neither battery problem , nor software and nor hardware problem. It's a charging bug .

I'm with semi bricked device (charging bug) for more than 2 months and there is no effective solution yet .

I ordered a new battery anyway, it was cheap enough so why not... Anyway when it comes in ill try it out and report back. The problem has to lie somehwere, either mainboard or battery.

If your phone is not getting recognised in your pc... Try changing usb connectivity to MSC or MTP mode... I think maybe MSC mode will get connected to your pc thats ur sd Card only.. Try it and leme know
Your phone, like mine has a defective usb port. At least that is my guess from these symptoms.
replacing the port is difficult and expensive because it is soldered to the main board.
I got myself a dock for charging and make my connections to my computer via WIFI.

Try reflashing ROM with the help of flashtool in fastboot mode.
If the problem still persist then try flashing stock firmware with the flashtool.
If its software problem, then the above process will probably help you.
I reflashed ROM using CWM recovery and putting phone on charging but its not helping still phone is not charging
If issue is with ROM then doesn't phone charge in offline mode?

ROM contains kernel. If the kernel is buggy then possibly it must be causing the problem.
Rather you must check your charger. If still the problem persist, then it must be hardware issue. Maybe charging socket or charging IC.
Ok
I think issue is with charging IC coz when I connect the charger the device detects the charger in offline mode and again goes off.
Wel I still have to try with stock ROM but I am not able to understand if my phone could in flashmode if battery is completely drained out

make sure you are using sony charger that came with the phone,,,,if it's not,,make sure you are using a good charger with the same AMPs like the original charger ( i use the charger who came with the phone ,,it's 850mah) and if it's not the problem from this it's probably software,, like others said flash ftf and see what happen
good luck my friend

Even if your battery is faulty, it would show charging.
It depends on the behavior of battery before switching off your phone.
If battery was working fine then there's no problem with the battery.
I think its faulty socket/IC
Even Sony people are not able to fix it
I gave it local vendor he fixed it but forgot put on camera.
So after using for a week I gave it back to him to fix camera and now again the charging has stopped and even he is not able to fix it.
I asked him what was the issue last time he replied issue with charging socket and strip and now again he changed it its not woking...

Dude, take your phone to authorized Sony service center
Regards,
hitman-xda
Ye I had took it to authorized sony service center.
He checked the phone and said this issue is with mother board we cannot fix it, We need to replace board which would cost around 10k, So whats the use.
I would get some new handset instead of spending 10K on this phone after 2 Years.
but the local vendor had fixed it at just 250Buks
