Root Information - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

Okay so I used to have a SGH-I777 (Galaxy s2) and I rooted it. I also flashed kernals and roms through CWM. Although I did all of these things, I never knew what was behind the programming for root. Now I have a SM-900A and I want to know why we can't just unlock the bootloader, or what is holding us back from rooting the phone. Also I hear about srs root and stuff like that. I would like to know what they mean and understand the concept behind root. Thank you, sorry for being a noob lol.

Basically in order to unlock the boot loader we would need the proper encryption keys (which unfortunately are not available) for authentication without that the boot loader cannot be unlocked nor can you flash any custom ROMs or gain root level access. In addition there are currently no known kernel exploits for the version of KitKat installed on our phones which would be another way of gaining root level access. Without one of these two things root is not possible. Mind you I'm not saying that we'll never have root (I've seen amazing things happen on XDA before) it's just going to take time. As to what root is in Windows terms think of it as administrator access in other words you would have full control of the device to change or modify just about anyway.

I am so ever the skeptic call me a conspiracy theorist if you wish BUT (And please don't anybody take this as an afront it's not meant that way)
Root checker works by querying specific values within the build.prop and by querying access to data/local/default.prop as well as checking for SU in /system/bin. ANYBODY could take a Galaxy S5 SM-G900T (Tmobile variant) which is rooted and change the ro.product.device value to SM-G900A and then run rootchecker and voila you will get the exact same screen as shown in the picture. rootchecker did it's job it verified root and verified model based on the values it read from the build.prop, if you have root already you can change whatever you want in the build.prop.
What I'm trying to point out here is that there are way to many variables at play to get excited about one persons claims without valid coraboration from another user.

I have to ask how you know its not a Tmobile device? If your basing it on the fact that the screenshot says SM-G900A that is easily changed in the build.prop as you can see in the attachment i can make anything into a G900A ATT S5
incase your wondering that is a Galaxy Tab3 7.0 tablet but wait it says it's a S5 G900A
And like I said I'm the skeptic so if i can find other answers then I tend to always look on the questionable side of things no offense meant to anybody especially geohot.

If the Galaxy phones are like the M8 you can change it to show whatever data icon set you want once rooted, you just change the value for carrier ID which is probably the same change that rootchecker checks.
For what it's worth I do hope it's an AT&T phone, I just bought an S5 today and was disappointed to find it's locked down. I may have to repossess my M8 from my girlfriend and let her use the S5 lol

To me the S5 Active is better than the M8. I really think he did this and hopefully we can get root soon. If not, I'm good still. This phone is sick man. Love the way it feels and with a temp glass screen protector it's even better. Cya. Not trying to be any kinda way but happy about the news. Now we wait and hit refresh. Well me anyways

Which if he has a rooted G900T he can change to be any data icons he so chooses, the only way to 100% prove the device is an ATT S5 is to have the imie of the device and run it against ATT's database. based on that picture there is no conclusive proof that the device is an ATT variant.

[Conspiracy Theory] - VZN "so called leak"

I'm a firm believer that VZN and LG both couldn't get figure out a method to properly secure KK. I think the final OTA will have some method to ruin someone's day. My opinion, VZN is having fits over the old bootstack booting the ROM. I also figure they wanted the root method from ioroot to try to close it as well. Talk amongst yourselves ?
I just can't buy that there was an accidental slip up by both companies. Seems they setup a situation and decompile everything the devs post.

Definitely a possible... Tho our devs have skills that border on the magical, and the power of collective knowledge is a wonderful thing haha.
But as far as VZW's predicament, I have no doubt that someone watches these forums, and curses over the extra dollars they'll have to spend on keeping their big red fingers locked tightly around our phones. As to whether it actually delays their official OTA, I'm sure they have deadlines to meet (esp. where the bloatware vendors are concerned), but it would be anyone's guess.
I'm just thrilled we have these leaks period. Even if the official OTA seals up security holes, this leak means a big boost to VS980 custom development!
The new KK leak seems odd, especially when some of its not even working correctly. I'm kinda stuck now. Device can get into Download mode but it just locks there.

You ever think maybe they release it so devices get bricked and they gotta pay for new ones?
Well, if we're tossing out ideas...what if it got leaked so vzw could track who has 4.4 installed? Then they can red flag the rooters.
Today, I called to get a replacement. Speaker stoped working... she asked me if it was the original one I bought. I said Ya, then asked if I traded it or rooted it. I was Like, root? Lol...anyways, something on her end was flagging the phone. Of course, at the time of calling my phone was 100% stock. But I DID have 4.4 installed..replacement is in its way but still..more complicated then I expected

I don't really believe it, but I've seen some say VZW knows what apps you've installed. I saw a user once say they told him exactly what root apps he currently had. If that's true, some root app you've installed at some point may have flagged it. Or she was a liar. Lol. To be honest...once it was confirmed that you could downgrade and keep Loki on the other variants, I'm surprised LG didn't pull the Sprint rollout.
When the KK kernel source was "accidentally" leaked early after the devs were having problems with trying to create a zip rom from the KK leak and needed that info, that's is when my eyebrows were raised....lol. I was like, that's too much of a coincident. Somebody" was reading and listening to our cries....lmao. Nevertheless, thank you to whoever it was.

Lol, well she was definitely not lying. I didn't want to pry to much on what the issue was. Playing ignorant is sometimes the best rout but my guess is the Mac ids or sns from the day I bought the phone to now changed. She just kept saying "something is preventing me from sending you a replacement, are you sure you didn't trade phones with a friend or something?"

Serial number is hardware level. Not possible unless you actually were swapped. They don't check it until old one is sent back, which is why you are given a purchase clause on returns. I'll assume your account was a bit jacked up if she wasn't lying, otherwise, liar.
Maybe Verizon wanted to wait for the knock code update to release KK instead of releasing it and then putting out another update right away for knock code.

I don't know if it was necessarily a leak; I pulled it off their servers and published the link here one xda like a week back. It took us a few days but @xdabbeb found a way to trick our devices into taking that OTA. One thing I find suspicious is that it hasn't been taken down yet, which means it *might* be our official, it just hasn't had the green light yet. Also, the kernel source is still alive (direct link download) it just has the link removed.
Agreed. At the very least I think it was intended to be the official release. Whether they're holding off on pushing it to everyone because of a last minute issue they found or internal delays is anyone's guess. I tend to believe it's the latter.

Liar? About what lol what is there to lie about. It was just an interesting conversation that kind of applied to this thread. And by the way, when I said serial number I was referring to the IMEI which, like the mac address is supposed to be unchangeable and yet there have been cases where they changed. But like I said, I don't know what the issue was. And obviously wasn't that big of a deal because my new phone is on its way

When I quit working for VZW a couple years ago, the systems we used listed all the software/update/PRL version info of the software you had installed on your phone. It seemed that a lot of that info was based on the updates your phone pulled from the servers, and I never saw anything that actually indicated root status. However, they are constantly updating their capabilities so I wouldn't put it past em. I am of the opinion that most manufacturers don't check all that closely for root, at least if the phone is on a stock rom. I have never actually heard or read online of a VZW customer whose phone got rejected purely because it was rooted.

I don't think it was rooting but maybe my update status. Example, my warranty date on the phone 2/4/2014. This is located in hardware information, hardware not software. I'll assume the warranty date is assigned the day you buy your phone. Now, it's changed. Point is, if that's changed what else could have changed

will lollipop update ( or this method) reset knox???

im dealing with tmobile going through a warranty exchange process because the accelerometer/ gyro is off. ive tested 3 different phones all with the same issue. all apps using the gyro/accel drift off to the left. im sure these phones are all from different batches because the original i bought in store, the second sent from tmobile seemed brand new all wrapped up in the protective stickers , and the 3rd was sent the same way with out all the protective stickers and ****. im at my wits end with a brand new 700 dollar phone. obviously im a bit ocd with these types of things. if im paying a PREMIUM price for a premium object, i expect premium quality control standards. cant imagine they all have the same exact same hardware issue.
my main question is , when the 5.0 update drops for tmobile will it reset the knox counter? ill update via kies. never installed a custom rom. just root and recovery. just need to know in case the update doesnt fix the issue like they said. they tech advised me that if its tripped and samsung tells them so, it will cost me over 400$. and i cant afford that. any one know for sure? also will the method in this thread work on the note 4? or is there a version that will. if it does reset knox i will not root it until my warranty is up. ( at the time i didnt know reflashing stock firmware wouldnt clear it. it always had before.) thanks in advance.
http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/how-instal...galaxy-s4-i9505-without-tripping-knox-1493967
Don't ask the tech stuff like that
i didnt he told me amidst our conversation... why would you even post? unless you have information or something of value just save it. your post is completely point less
You can't reset Knox.
It doesn't matter. They don't check.
Just Odin to stock + factory reset.
When i send my note 3 for a warranty thing, they rejected it because i had tripped the Knox flag
I had rooted my note 4 put lots of custom roms. I just factory reset, did a warranty exchange and I didn't get charged from tmobile.

Never in 8 years have I been charged for that. Tmobile uses an outside company to refurbish phones and they don't check either. First test they do is power on. If it does they flash the last update and see if it works if it does they hook it up to a pc and it runs other test if they pass it gets check for damage and sent back to someone as refurbished. Ur free to do as u will but anyone who says Tmobile checks is such a damn liar.

You knew it was coming in the USA and it looks like December 19 is the day.

What's to stop people from not accepting this update just like the previous one? Unless it's a forced update it won't really change anything

When you reboot the device it will do the updates on one of the reboots. This is true even if you "delayed" the update.
There is a way to prevent the previous update (you can see on this forum). Unless they found a way around that work around good chances that the same work around would work for this update. I would recommend doing the work around now and before this update.
The work around for previous update. Hope this will work for this update too.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-note-7/how-to/updated-limited-to-60-heres-fix-t3495293
I read someplace today that Samsung made a request to the makers of all package disablers on the Playstore to block the Note 7 from being able to take advantage of this... I'll try and find the article.
The one i found isnt supported by the playstore and still has the update packages. Look at the link JaguarXT posted
I highly doubt all the apps are getting on board. I used titanium to block a lot of samsung crap before this and I never got the last update and I won't get this update either.
According to what I read, T-Mobile will be pushing the update on December 27th, that's what CNET is reporting. It also mentions the dates for AT&T as well as Sprint.
Yep I got text from tmobile says starting 27 phone won't be able to charge so turn it in.
Looking like it's time to find a replacement, sadly nothing seems up to par
It will seem like a bold change from what I know and am used to but I'm considering the Honor 8. The specs don't seem to bad for the price point. But it's definitely not a Note 7. I was thinking about going back to the Note 5 but I don't even see it available on the T-Mobile website anymore.

That's because you had the good foresight to root, unlike some of us (pointing at myself). Samsung strong-armed all the package disabler devs on the Play Store to no longer block System apps! The way around it was then to purchase the new version anyway and obtain a license, uninstall, then side load an older version. But then in another update even that route was blocked by no longer granting licenses or something. Then someone provided another app independent of the Play Store to side load which is what is being referred to above. It's gotten nasty!!!! Our ranks will shrink further as those who are severely technically challenged fail to take measures to block this update. Personally, I can't help but wonder/worry if Sammy has some type of back door, but that's the conspiracy theorist in me, lol!

It will seem like a bold change from what I know and am used to but I'm considering the Honor 8. The specs don't seem to bad for the price point. But it's definitely not a Note 7. I was thinking about going back to the Note 5 but I don't even see it available on the T-Mobile website anymore.

I agree and I will probably change to the cheapest samsung phone to get my $100 and then switch out and use my One Plus 3 till the S8 comes out.
Gotta use my Samsung Rewards up as well... This really sux
I caved last night, I picked up the s7 edge. I'm still keeping the Note 7 though and I'll use it until I'm no longer able to.

Why? You should have just kept the Note7 until the S8 came out... now you have an obsolete phone in 3 months.
I still have the Note 7, the s7 edge worked out in my favor actually. They gave me a Gear VR and now when the next phone drops I'll give my wife the s7 edge. She still has an S5 so it will be a nice upgrade for her.
I'm lost dude. So I have the second version of the Note 7, you know, the one that was supposed to not malfunction. Model # SM-N930T with T-Mobile. OK, so my phone did receive the forced update that make my battery charge to only 60%, I was able to use ODIN and put back the stock firmware, I installed PACKAGE DISABLER PRO and blocked the necessary items needed so I am now at 100% battery life. How is it that we know that is still not enough to block this new update that is coming to cripple the Note 7??? Maybe we are still safe, or is it FACT that it WILL still be forced even though we have the updates and tmobile and Samsung items blocked? Also, with what I have explained, can my phone still be rooted and install a custom ROM or am I too late or second version of Note 7 it was never possible???? Someone please help, I am not a noob, I have been installing custom ROMs since Galaxy S2, but at the same time I am no PRO. All info will help me and the community clarify this sticky situation. PLEASE HELP. AND THANK YOU ALL!!!!! Nothing compares to the Note 7, what other phone has IRIS EYE SCANNER, a SECURE FOLDER LOCK that you can add a secondary app of one you already have with a completely different account, you can lock your notes in SAMSUNG NOTES, an S PEN, A FREAK'N S-PEN for crying out loud!!!!! No Phone compares to this dude!!!!!! HELP HELP HELP HELP!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not 100% sure but the steps with package disabler that you've done should allow you to not have to worry about the new update coming through, someone correct me if I'm wrong.
As for rooting you're out of luck, only the original firmware that shipped with the phone was rootable. After that, this is as good as it gets for us firmware wise
Thnx

General ***Beware*** New AT&T S21 Ultras

Just went to pick up my new S21 Ultra 512 from AT&T and it shipped with v2 firmware. As of now the bootloader is not unlockable! Needless to say, I returned without even opening the box. That sucks!
How do you tell if it has V2 firmware, my box doesn't say. Just software version G998USQU2AUB5

My tag doesn't have that sw version or the sm number ..
Samsung and AT&T partnered... what could go wrong?
If not on the box, in the "About Phone" menu under settings. I was looking to purchase a New factory unlocked phone on Ebay but the seller cannot provide the FW version. So, no go. Cheers
I got mine on launch day from tmobile and it was always a 2 so I dont know what youre talking about
If I'm not mistaken, T-mobile allows their bootloader to be unlockable. @sesnut, Did you unlock yours?

Nope, none of the SM-G998U's are offered with Unlocked Bootloaders and at this time there are no options available to unlock these devices.

Actually there is. @afaneh92 has an unlock service provided you are still on v1 firmware. The pricing is more than fair as this is currently the only way to unlock.

Yep. You could pay like $150 to unlock the bootloader in the past, but if you updated the phone at all within the last 2.5 months, you'll be stuck with a locked bootloader. Hopefully someone manages to find a solution to unlock the bootloader completely without having to manipulate the steady partition. I literally only want root and I'm stuck without it for...well... forever, potentially... Which kinda stinks without having a Pixel this time... My last phone being a Pixel 3 had me a bit spoiled, as even if it wasn't rooted there still wouldn't be ads everywhere, lol.

Interesting that they now have two IMEI's on the box. Could e-Sim finally be enabled. I wish you kept it. I wonder if it showed both IMEI's in Status Information

You have ads on the OS, system apps?
This:
Home - Package Disabler
The only NON-root solution that let’s you disable any unwanted packages that come pre-installed / installed with your phone / tablet.
www.packagedisabler.com
I use Karma Firewall as well. Both use very little battery. Zero issues with both.
Rooting be much more trouble than it be worth even if I could on the Note 10+... it's runs nicely now.

All of the Samsung apps have ads built-in - so not necessarily the 'true' system apps. Thankfully enough, I've already removed all of those crummy apps over adb. But I've already tried things like fully customized AdGuard, but those just don't do the job for me. I'm a nerdy person, so I like having the full system rights and rooting my phones. But aside from that, AdAway is just a better service and keeps out the ads that things like AdGuard miss.
But all in all, let's just hope that us US nerds with Samsung phones get lucky and get an exploit leaked that allows for Snapdragon 888 Samsung phones in North America to be bootloader unlocked!
*Edit* - read my post again and I realized that my bottom statement is as likely as winning the mega millions lottery lol.
*Edit 2.0* - Response to @blackhawk:
It seems like Samsung's non-essential apps all have ads now. So things like their members app, the galaxy store, the weather app, Samsung Pay, etc. But the default frequently used apps (like messages and phone) don't seem to have any ads. But I've also removed every single Samsung app at this point and have loaded my phone with all Google apps for a little extra reliability.

I'm like you, but there are too many downsides to root on this device.
I've avoided Samsung since they started making it hard on their phones, since s6 I believe.
Have had Nexus and then OP...
Where I live, Samsung pay is just too useful, and I lived without it before and now I don't dare to break it on this device.
I see that as an "flashing holiday", which will last a couple years considering the price of the device!
Too bad, I used rooting aside from custom ROMs for system wide adblocking in the past, I found it very convenient...

Totally understandable as Samsung Pay was the only Samsung app that I consistently used and it was super nifty! Unfortunately, they've permanently disabled it in North America (no more MST support) on the S21 series. So I'd much rather have root being that I reside in NA =(.
I'll just have to get extremely lucky to get root access though...

Yes, technically it is possible on select devices depending on the update status but how many users are we talking about? Who would ignore updates for months then out of the blue decide to pay someone to root their device and forego future updates, almost no one! If root is a high priority then aquire a Galaxy with the unlocked bootloader or a different make altogether, they're much more practical considerations.

I agree, this is why I traded in two rooted Samsung phones. Not being able to fully update without loosing the unlock killed it for me. Thankfully I didn't loose all that much cash with the trade ins. I'm perfectly fine with my unrooted S21 Ultra and ADB. I won't root again unless it's a Pixel.

NO WAY..Im down to try anything to help. i got the 21 ultra tmobile unlocked
1st to be done is modify odin accordingly. it will need to be modified before hand to simplify the process for end users and reduce risk of fck ups. After that its simply implementing the code i already have.

All up to the latest, BL5. I need someone with an S22 to test it very soon. very likely this method will allow S22 BL unlock too. it seems quite universal according to some of the contributers on Github
Great news!
This is awesome news! Just figured I'd ask considering currently only up to v1 is available for unlock and I believe that's paid only so didn't want to get my hopes up with having up to the Feb update v5 and it only work for say v4 lol

This will be free, full stop. The process im working on uses Legit Samsung/Qualcomm Dev resources to unlock the BL without triggering knox/screwing up "Secure Apps" like Samsung pay etc, but is also the reason its taking so long to finish. Essentially trying to replicate the "factory process" the engineers use to unlock their BL's during R&D.
This is very promising and you guys are awesome for all the hard work you put in!
I've been kicking myself since realizing only v1 could be unlocked prior. Was actually about to sell off my current factory unlocked S21 ultra and jump ship to RedMagic/ROG. Only hold back for either was the OS on both.
Still may if after dumping samsung's bloatware this thing doesn't stop heating up. Not exactly happy being stuck tethered to a cord using a "phone cooler" to even watch a video (pnp) & use Amazon. Let alone the space the bloat I don't use takes up.

If your phone is overheating check out an app called "Alliance Sheild X" - use it to open some of the internal engineer apps in the "Device Keystring" app. Just be CAREFUL playing with options - look up some of the settings you find, i know for fact there's some in there related to battery/charging current/ display voltage etc. again, use with caution, but if your technically inclined you might find some options that will help you accomplish lowering your devices temps as well as increasing battery life.

Alliance Shield X uses a zero touch config with Knox Configure so device owner persists after factory reset, as well as reflashing firmware (nand erase included). The flash will appear to have been successful to the naked eye but alas, it will still be managed. The files exists in whichever part of the dynamic partition (A/B) is not in use, I wouldn't recommend using it. Looking forward to the BL unlock, awesome news to hear & appreciate your work immensely.

Not meaning in terms of flash, but simply to use hidden system processes to have more granular control of battery etc. lots of hidden features on these phones. I just simply prefer ASX to find said hidden features in Device keystring, RLZDebug, Google Partner Setup, PreConfig, etc. used in conjunction with a desktop program you can find here on XDA, or simply ADB shell, you can do quite a bit of manipulation.
Also, DEX seems to have some interesting hidden bits too.
