Root Information

Okay so I used to have a SGH-I777 (Galaxy s2) and I rooted it. I also flashed kernals and roms through CWM. Although I did all of these things, I never knew what was behind the programming for root. Now I have a SM-900A and I want to know why we can't just unlock the bootloader, or what is holding us back from rooting the phone. Also I hear about srs root and stuff like that. I would like to know what they mean and understand the concept behind root. Thank you, sorry for being a noob lol.

Basically in order to unlock the boot loader we would need the proper encryption keys (which unfortunately are not available) for authentication without that the boot loader cannot be unlocked nor can you flash any custom ROMs or gain root level access. In addition there are currently no known kernel exploits for the version of KitKat installed on our phones which would be another way of gaining root level access. Without one of these two things root is not possible. Mind you I'm not saying that we'll never have root (I've seen amazing things happen on XDA before) it's just going to take time. As to what root is in Windows terms think of it as administrator access in other words you would have full control of the device to change or modify just about anyway.

Root checker works by querying specific values within the build.prop and by querying access to data/local/default.prop as well as checking for SU in /system/bin. ANYBODY could take a Galaxy S5 SM-G900T (Tmobile variant) which is rooted and change the ro.product.device value to SM-G900A and then run rootchecker and voila you will get the exact same screen as shown in the picture. rootchecker did it's job it verified root and verified model based on the values it read from the build.prop, if you have root already you can change whatever you want in the build.prop.
What I'm trying to point out here is that there are way to many variables at play to get excited about one persons claims without valid coraboration from another user.

That's not a T-Mobile phone my friend. Thanks for your input but I will stay happy and think we will have root soon. You seem very intelligent on some of this stuff but it wont change how I feel about this new info.

I have to ask how you know its not a Tmobile device? If your basing it on the fact that the screenshot says SM-G900A that is easily changed in the build.prop as you can see in the attachment i can make anything into a G900A ATT S5
incase your wondering that is a Galaxy Tab3 7.0 tablet but wait it says it's a S5 G900A
And like I said I'm the skeptic so if i can find other answers then I tend to always look on the questionable side of things no offense meant to anybody especially geohot.

If the Galaxy phones are like the M8 you can change it to show whatever data icon set you want once rooted, you just change the value for carrier ID which is probably the same change that rootchecker checks.
For what it's worth I do hope it's an AT&T phone, I just bought an S5 today and was disappointed to find it's locked down. I may have to repossess my M8 from my girlfriend and let her use the S5 lol

To me the S5 Active is better than the M8. I really think he did this and hopefully we can get root soon. If not, I'm good still. This phone is sick man. Love the way it feels and with a temp glass screen protector it's even better. Cya. Not trying to be any kinda way but happy about the news. Now we wait and hit refresh. Well me anyways

Which if he has a rooted G900T he can change to be any data icons he so chooses, the only way to 100% prove the device is an ATT S5 is to have the imie of the device and run it against ATT's database. based on that picture there is no conclusive proof that the device is an ATT variant.

Why would George do that. I believe he did it. We shall see. I really hope you are wrong. hahaha. Tomorrow when we hit XDA's site up to check, I would love to see a method. I miss all my root apps. Most paid for too.

When you reboot the device it will do the updates on one of the reboots.This is true even if you "delayed" the update.
There is a way to prevent the previous update (you can see on this forum). Unless they found a way around that work around good chances that the same work around would work for this update. I would recommend doing the work around now and before this update.

I read someplace today that Samsung made a request to the makers of all package disablers on the Playstore to block the Note 7 from being able to take advantage of this... I'll try and find the article.

According to what I read, T-Mobile will be pushing the update on December 27th, that's what CNET is reporting. It also mentions the dates for AT&T as well as Sprint.

It will seem like a bold change from what I know and am used to but I'm considering the Honor 8. The specs don't seem to bad for the price point. But it's definitely not a Note 7. I was thinking about going back to the Note 5 but I don't even see it available on the T-Mobile website anymore.

That's because you had the good foresight to root, unlike some of us (pointing at myself). Samsung strong-armed all the package disabler devs on the Play Store to no longer block System apps! The way around it was then to purchase the new version anyway and obtain a license, uninstall, then side load an older version. But then in another update even that route was blocked by no longer granting licenses or something. Then someone provided another app independent of the Play Store to side load which is what is being referred to above. It's gotten nasty!!!! Our ranks will shrink further as those who are severely technically challenged fail to take measures to block this update. Personally, I can't help but wonder/worry if Sammy has some type of back door, but that's the conspiracy theorist in me, lol!

I agree and I will probably change to the cheapest samsung phone to get my $100 and then switch out and use my One Plus 3 till the S8 comes out.
Gotta use my Samsung Rewards up as well... This really sux

I caved last night, I picked up the s7 edge. I'm still keeping the Note 7 though and I'll use it until I'm no longer able to.

Why? You should have just kept the Note7 until the S8 came out... now you have an obsolete phone in 3 months.

I still have the Note 7, the s7 edge worked out in my favor actually. They gave me a Gear VR and now when the next phone drops I'll give my wife the s7 edge. She still has an S5 so it will be a nice upgrade for her.

I'm lost dude. So I have the second version of the Note 7, you know, the one that was supposed to not malfunction. Model # SM-N930T with T-Mobile. OK, so my phone did receive the forced update that make my battery charge to only 60%, I was able to use ODIN and put back the stock firmware, I installed PACKAGE DISABLER PRO and blocked the necessary items needed so I am now at 100% battery life. How is it that we know that is still not enough to block this new update that is coming to cripple the Note 7??? Maybe we are still safe, or is it FACT that it WILL still be forced even though we have the updates and tmobile and Samsung items blocked? Also, with what I have explained, can my phone still be rooted and install a custom ROM or am I too late or second version of Note 7 it was never possible???? Someone please help, I am not a noob, I have been installing custom ROMs since Galaxy S2, but at the same time I am no PRO. All info will help me and the community clarify this sticky situation. PLEASE HELP. AND THANK YOU ALL!!!!! I'm not 100% sure but the steps with package disabler that you've done should allow you to not have to worry about the new update coming through, someone correct me if I'm wrong.
As for rooting you're out of luck, only the original firmware that shipped with the phone was rootable. After that, this is as good as it gets for us firmware wise

Huawei - bootloader - root

Hi,
Just came over from apple for a long time, selected best price/hw (non-noname) devices. I was always trying to jailbreak my phone, and thought Android a better place to come out from your sandboxed environment. At the end of the story I searched a lot in XDA forums and found with mate 20 pro and no bootloader code nothing can be done in an easy way. There are a lot of thread telling how to get bootloader codes , but currently the situation is this:
Funky - !Down! and if it would give, would cost a lot money, irrealistic high price.
Global unlock solutions - not answering or selling anything in real life.
ministery of solutions also unavaiable.
Huawei has no longer giving access to lower level access to the phone "bootloader". To be honest this is disgusting, more disgusting than with Apple, at least you know when you buy people working on jailbreaks and if you not updating one day you will be happy. With Huawei now we are in a crazy situation, during the firmware built they have associated a number from your imei and possible from Serial (as on huawei this field was mandatory for unlock code)...
Each device got a number, and potentially it would make sense to know the exact hashing algorithm when it checked, if we get that and use hashcat that could be a good solution as if i remember well it is 16 numbers for huawei devices, so brute force with hashcat, not on the actual phone is possible...
I was thinking of brute force, but they also reboot the phone each 5 times, so when you want to brute force 4 try reboot, this need time... I am really dissappointed that you buy an android phone and you are almost in the same cage as with apple iphone.
Guys someone please summarize what are the possibilities with boot loader, is anyone working to replicate the hashing mechanism?
This should be for geeks possible for brute force, just we need to elliminate the condition phone, how long does it take to virtually run a cloned boot loader on a PC and pass through a code in milliseconds? In theory , if we get the mechanism known and can utilize hashcat for cracking with numeric only password would be short journey.
Please make a summary what is the current progress and future plan with rooting and unlocking huawei newer devices
When i was holding my last "free" phone completely linux opened phone, it was allowing you to enter into the deepest boot loader and it brought up the next one for flashing like an eeprom, flash mode or persistant... I am quiet sure if you can't go deeper than fastboot you cannot brick your phone, so huawei's statement is not correct, yes could soft brick your phone, but as long as you have a flashing interface alll should go well. I am crying for phones like nokia n900 linux mobile, where actually was your decision what do you want to install into your phone without virtualization/containers/sand boxes.
Please keep us updated about the possibilities and future plans about the boot loader as in the last week I completely lost my trust in huawei, no one tell anything , I also wrote them if they can send me my code, but they simply ignoring my mail at huawei

Buy and unlock code they pop up every now and then but you have to be fast. I got one for six dollars just last week. Root with magisk and you are all set.

I think we need a new updated guide for the new people or does the old guides still stand up? I came from Samsung S8 so I have lots to learn as well.

Tl;Dr if you want freedom with firmwares, kernels, root and easy life, you probably picked wrong device.
Code is generated in unknown way and code is tied into special partition in encrypted way that it's difficult to take it out. In previous android versions it was open text so it was possible to get it via exploits, but now no more. Like you mentioned, it's complicated to even brute force it and risky to play with partitions with high chance of making brick out of 1k$ device.
The base with unlock codes was open for engineers until mid of last year when Huawei started shutdown of unlocks. Services like funky, global and ministry are just middlemen who have contacts with Huawei engineers who can get the code when base with keys is open. Base was closed whole time from Jan to April 2019 (Huawei started hunting engineers breaking rules?), and then it suddenly opened for couple of days (that's why you see some happy faces here). They recently again closed it, so yes, it's expected that everyone is quiet now since nobody has access. It will be same until next opening happens (if it ever will?)
Ps: If you still want to play with high risks of making brick, there's telegram group "Big Huawei Exploits" where people are trying to figure out security workarounds, but it's far from average user experience of typical bootloader unlock without knowing internals of emui 9 and Huawei bootloader.
Ps2: full potential of root is not realized for our device due to problems with bootloader unlock (boomer), Huawei partitioning (twrp vs magisk, chose one ONLY) + xposed causes bootloop + incompatibilities with non-x64 drivers for many things like v4a which is making our device going bootloop.

Ignore this, they are not selling bootloader unlock code, they are selling reset code for locked devices, I paid 6$ for literaly nothing and 14$ to be spent at their site. if you got a phone FRP locked, then you can wipe your device and reconfigure, it not helps in OEM, I also asked them via e-mail they not support and will be not supported by them

You got the wrong code. They were selling bootloader unlock codes but have taken then off the site for now. I successfully unlocked my bootloader using the code I purchased from https://sickw.com/?page=bootloader but they are no longer selling them.

Well I don't want to decrypt the roms I have no time to play so much with hascat, but if we can virtually load the Fastboot into a PC app where we can inspect the runtime memory that would make things easier, especially with someone who used to use assembly languages and reverse engineering...
There could be 2 type how they created the BL unlock code, alghorythm which using imei and possible S/N , or it just random, there should be a tiny database on each device of the bootloader code, as if they not giving "personalised fastboot" that means the required code, or the output of the creation process must persist somewhere , and don't forget if we can load the rom into a monitored environment we can see what going to be read from which address in runtime memory.

Well I am now using Iphone and Android as user, I enjoy debian based linux in my ipad which actually jailbreaked well. I just came originally from maemo, and there everything is possible, you can't actually brick an ARM board, the lowest level there will be a rom which contains the minimal OS which allows you to flash rootfs and mmc media afterward. I assume this is similar to Intel CPU + BIOS with ARM, you can make your computer unoperating, but you can't break down via a keyboard or any software your bios is the lowest level which allow minimal control over voltages and such thing what could enteraly destroy you pheripherias and devices. IF I thinking right the minimal system you can dig down in the layers right now is fastboot, which still seems to be some fancy stuff with too much additional information, can't we dig deeper? or flashing the flashing rom is only possible via diagnostic port what they used during the assembling of the devices? On nokia Geek devices you could go at the deepest level possible and implement multiboot for multiple operating system, rootfs and media was on different device not just different mount/partitions... I am but sad no one creating pocket computers, I got bit upset, so my new n900 is on it's way, however that device 10 year old construction, it is good for things like playing msdos games and some try with C/Cpp but nothing more, I am sure I will need to make the new openssl binary for being able to browse sha2 ssl sites

Idea
Guys, I digged a lot to understand the boot sequence and how the calls / components loaded. As far I saw all current android ARM systems use a Little Kernel opensource Bootloader, with modification. It is called A-BOOT and the interface what we communicate is fastboot. The bootloader verify of the signature each flashing each rom, and eventually during loading as well. With "unlocking" you get the ability to bypass the signature check. Eventually I looked into the rom files they encrypted that's a thing, but the question what it is in the runtime memory.
Just an idea if we have here someone friendly with ARM and assembly/memory inspecting and has 1 or more bootloader code already...
Is this approach possible for some extra geeks
download virtual ARM machine
load the rom , only the aboot required with oem application with it
check in vm's memory what happens when code entered incorrectly/correctly
As I read it secured for the rom images and signatures (from unathorized changes), I don't think the bootloader itself as an application has encrypted memory. So in theory "I am optimistic" if you have your S/N | you BL code, and the | runtime memory hash TADA we can rebuild the hashing alghorythm. I am not experienced with ARM at all, especially not with it cpu operation and memory adressing, so I would need some hyper geek who experienced. It is just an idea if reverse engineering is possible this way or not. Of course as I can see it need a lot of work without any return, but the challange is hard
P.S. first though thing I can imagine, you need usb driver for fastboot on virtual ARM, you need a connected client for fastboot protocol, so virtual USB service. You need to be able to set breakpoint in the virtual ARM box, those just what came into my mind even if u know arm/assembly...

But there is not other way to buy the code...

They haven't been available for months

Apparently they're back again according to funkyhuawei.

I just received a code from him. He's legit
Quicker option than Global Unlocking Solutions at the moment. Accepts PayPal too.

General ***Beware*** New AT&T S21 Ultras

Just went to pick up my new S21 Ultra 512 from AT&T and it shipped with v2 firmware. As of now the bootloader is not unlockable! Needless to say, I returned without even opening the box. That sucks!

How do you tell if it has V2 firmware, my box doesn't say. Just software version G998USQU2AUB5

Samsung and AT&T partnered... what could go wrong?

If not on the box, in the "About Phone" menu under settings. I was looking to purchase a New factory unlocked phone on Ebay but the seller cannot provide the FW version. So, no go. Cheers

Nope, none of the SM-G998U's are offered with Unlocked Bootloaders and at this time there are no options available to unlock these devices.

Actually there is. @afaneh92 has an unlock service provided you are still on v1 firmware. The pricing is more than fair as this is currently the only way to unlock.

Yep. You could pay like $150 to unlock the bootloader in the past, but if you updated the phone at all within the last 2.5 months, you'll be stuck with a locked bootloader. Hopefully someone manages to find a solution to unlock the bootloader completely without having to manipulate the steady partition. I literally only want root and I'm stuck without it for...well... forever, potentially... Which kinda stinks without having a Pixel this time... My last phone being a Pixel 3 had me a bit spoiled, as even if it wasn't rooted there still wouldn't be ads everywhere, lol.

Interesting that they now have two IMEI's on the box. Could e-Sim finally be enabled. I wish you kept it. I wonder if it showed both IMEI's in Status Information

All of the Samsung apps have ads built-in - so not necessarily the 'true' system apps. Thankfully enough, I've already removed all of those crummy apps over adb. But I've already tried things like fully customized AdGuard, but those just don't do the job for me. I'm a nerdy person, so I like having the full system rights and rooting my phones. But aside from that, AdAway is just a better service and keeps out the ads that things like AdGuard miss.
But all in all, let's just hope that us US nerds with Samsung phones get lucky and get an exploit leaked that allows for Snapdragon 888 Samsung phones in North America to be bootloader unlocked!
*Edit* - read my post again and I realized that my bottom statement is as likely as winning the mega millions lottery lol.

It seems like Samsung's non-essential apps all have ads now. So things like their members app, the galaxy store, the weather app, Samsung Pay, etc. But the default frequently used apps (like messages and phone) don't seem to have any ads. But I've also removed every single Samsung app at this point and have loaded my phone with all Google apps for a little extra reliability.

I'm like you, but there are too many downsides to root on this device.
I've avoided Samsung since they started making it hard on their phones, since s6 I believe.
Have had Nexus and then OP...
Where I live, Samsung pay is just too useful, and I lived without it before and now I don't dare to break it on this device.
I see that as an "flashing holiday", which will last a couple years considering the price of the device!
Too bad, I used rooting aside from custom ROMs for system wide adblocking in the past, I found it very convenient...

Totally understandable as Samsung Pay was the only Samsung app that I consistently used and it was super nifty! Unfortunately, they've permanently disabled it in North America (no more MST support) on the S21 series. So I'd much rather have root being that I reside in NA =(.
I'll just have to get extremely lucky to get root access though...

Yes, technically it is possible on select devices depending on the update status but how many users are we talking about? Who would ignore updates for months then out of the blue decide to pay someone to root their device and forego future updates, almost no one! If root is a high priority then aquire a Galaxy with the unlocked bootloader or a different make altogether, they're much more practical considerations.

I agree, this is why I traded in two rooted Samsung phones. Not being able to fully update without loosing the unlock killed it for me. Thankfully I didn't loose all that much cash with the trade ins. I'm perfectly fine with my unrooted S21 Ultra and ADB. I won't root again unless it's a Pixel.

SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 9 TOUCH SCREEN NOT WORKING

So I have a galaxy note 9, and I've recently been using the s pen. because the touch screen hasn't been working all the time.. for instance, I can use the same part of the touch screen to open an app (lets say snapchat) for the same part of the screen it will stop working, then before you say its the app, ill get out of snapchat, to to my message app, and use my keyboard, and it will have the same issue, then ill get out of the app again, and touch where I was touching on the screen and it will work, I've managed to turn on the (show touches) in developer options, to show where its registering, and its not showing when I touch the keypad. I've tried to wipe this phone, I've tried to wipe the cache in recovery mode (its stock everything, stock recovery, stock operating system, and unrooted, and the bootloader is still locked) so I'm thinking it is a software malfunction, but I'm not 100% sure, because it sometimes registure as I touch somewhere else than I press, keep in mind (THIS IS WITHOUT S PEN) I would love if someone could help me to fix this issue, thank you soo very much if you want a video I can add a link to my google drive, where I can show you the issue

No magnets, also no case, or screen protector. And no it doesn't work in safe mode, I've tried that too, sorry I didn't list it. I've even tried the (screen test) ill attach the pic of what i'm talking about, it tested fine, every test, and I tested it multiple times.

Try clearing the system cache then go into safe mode and check it again.
If it's not hardware, software and you did a factory reset (tested right after reset with nothing loaded*) it may be the firmware is corrupted, reflash to same version. This almost never happens, possibility of a rootkit**. If a reflash fails to fix it is hardware either the display or mobo.
*if you used SmartSwitch, factory reset again without using SmartSwitch. If it's working after that, hand load with care...
**Android 8 and lower are suspectable to the worm X-Helper. It can evade removal by worming out of the user partition. It's a nasty one. There's methods to remove it now without reflashing I believe.

I'm no expert but you can flash the same or latter official stock rom for the device without unlocking the bootloader.

My Galaxy Note 9 started doing the same thing 4 months ago. Some days it actually seems like its fixed but I mostly use the S-Pen instead. Its very inconvenient. I tried the safemode and I posted a few days ago in this forum asking about if I had to match the same base version. I was thinking about rooting it to see if that may fix the issue. Let me know how you make out. I can let you know if rooting the phone fixes mine. I sill need to figure out how to root mine because it is an AT&T phone from USA and seems the base version that is on mine is not all that popular based on m trying to find the matching base version firmware. Either way if you haven't figured out a fix for your by time I do the surgery on mine I will give you heads up on my success or failure to fix the screen issue.

Was it refurbished?.... I'm so upset.. just found out my phone was refurbished, the screen isn't original, the motherboard probably is original, the SIM card tray isnt original.. how I found this out, my phone back cover was blue and the body is black, so I decided to open the back cover, (yes I was careful) didn't break anything, and I found this sticker on the flex cable ( I will insert a picture of It), and it brought me to this site "mobile sentrix" where I found out I basically got scammed from a pawnshop selling to me for $200 such a scam, and I can't even return it because it's been well over a month now that I've had it, they would be like, "get out of my store" so I'm basically screwed..

This is the site that the screen came from that the pawnshop bought and sold as a fully working phone... I'm so upset

Keep in mind I'm not hating on that company, even if they scammed the pawnshop, I'm hating on the pawnshop that sold me that phone, and I tried to return it when I first paid for it, and showed him the problems and he got mad and said you get what you pay for and told me to get out of his pawnshop.. and I can sue him because it would caust way more to sue him than to get my money back, and I probably won't, I'd just get his shop shutdown, ughh

If in the us take him to small claims court. Their rules vary by state. Fees are low, and if you win he pays the court costs!
Small claims court is an informal setting and the judge gives leeway to the participants. A lawyer isn't needed. Be respectful and state the facts, any evidence helps your case.
Don't let him slithzer away! Hammer em!

But I feel they could use the fact that I took the phone *apart* to their advantage, and say I could have tampered with it, I can't prove that I bought it like this, the only thing I can prove is that the stickers are on the parts of the phone

Also what would I win? Just getting my money back? I honestly want more, cause I know I'm not the first person he's done this too, like I don't want more for me, I want like his business shutdown or something, or like to be told that he isn't able to do that, also he lied to me and said the phone was 8gb of ram, when it only has 6gb, and he didn't even let me touch the phone or look at it much till I paid for it, and it's a "as is" pawnshop, so if I had a problem after he basically is gonna say I couldn't bring it back
