TWRP and 4.4.3 - Moto X Q&A

Can TWRP (all versions) work on 4.4.3?
Last time, i used TWRP 2.7 & 2.6 before update to 4.4.3. After updating to 4.4.3, i cannot flash ROMs by using TWRP. I tried latest 2.7.1.1 too but i have not luck. Backing up system is also very fast. It can finish in a few seconds. Last time, it took a few minutes to backup.
Edited: i can use philz touch and CWM to flash roms.

Official 2.7.1.1 twrp worked fine for me on 4.4.3 Verizon Dev edition

I'm on the GSM Dev Edition, and I have successfully installed both 2.7 and 2.7.1.1 since updating to 4.4.3 via the OTA.

Can you flash custom Roms by using TWRP on 4.4.3? I could flash when I was on 4.4.2

Honestly, no idea. I've never felt the need to flash a custom ROM since Blur is great. Some of the ROMs seem to have some of the excellent Moto features like Active Notifications, but none have blown me away so much with features. I've stuck with stock, and fulfill my tweaking needs with XPosed and Gravity Box.

Ota question.

I am on a Verizon moto x developer edition with an unlocked boot loader, custom recovery installed and I am rooted. I got the notification for the ota update. What if anything will this break?
Sent from my XT1060 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
First, you need to be on stock recovery for the OTA to attempt to install. Next you need to make sure all your system files and such are present and back to "stock" (i.e. if you did the tethering hacks, renamed or replaced system files, etc, you need to undo that), and you need to un-install Xposed or the OTA will fail when it tries to install.
Since you are Dev with unlocked bootloader, it wont "break" anything, but the new bootloader installed via the OTA prevents downgrading your rom. So if you find an issue with 4.4.2, you're stuck with it, you can't flash back to 4.4. If you loose root, you can still flash custom recovery and install SuperSU to root.
Those with locked bootloader might keep root, but Write Protection gets Enabled again. With an unlocked boot loader, you don't have to worry about this.
Also, if you really want 4.4.2, there is a zip in the android development section with an unofficial sbf. Be very careful with what files you flash, i flashed the zip in RSD lite blindly (my mistake) and spend four hours trying to figure out why i didn't have data or any mobile connection.
-edit-
Also, don't take my word for it but i think you'll still be alright if you don't flash gpt.bin and the bootloader and you should still be able to downgrade.
Ok. Thanks for the info guys. I might just wait until someone puts out the deoxidized 4.4.2 rom. I would flash slim or cm11 but I really like the active display and the touch less controls.

For what its worth, I've been running this 4.4.2 rom (the odexed version, deodexed also available) created from a XT1052 image on my VZW/DE XT1060:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/development/rom-moto-x-xt1052-t2639724
I did swap out the original build.prop with the Verizon-ized build.prop someone was kind enough to post on page 2 or 3 of that thread. It has been working great for me for the last week! Tethering even works on VZW w/o any extra steps.

If that's all you've done (haven't modified/deleted/renamed any system files/apps or installed Xposed, etc..) then it's really easy.
Flash the stock recovery back to your phone
install the update
Flash TWRP back to your phone (or not....)
Done.
You won't lose root taking the OTA and flashing recovery back doesn't affect your user data or app installs/configurations.

Flash CWM over TWRP?

So I'm currently unable to flash custom 4.4.4 ROMS using TWRP 2.7.1.1 for the Sprint HTC One m7 (m7spr). Not sure why, but I'd like to try CWM Recovery because I've read that works for a lot of people. So I downloaded the m7 version from clockworkmod(DOT)com/rommanager. My question is, is it safe to flash the image file over TWRP?

Could you explain why? There is a version of CWM Recovery made for the Sprint HTC One m7 available on the CWM web site. My understanding is that I just flash the CWM image made for the m7spr through Fastboot just like you would TWRP. My only concern is can one custom recovery be installed over/on top of the old recovery?

OK. I'll take your word for it because you are more experienced. What should I try to flash 4.4.4 ROMS? Before I had to use the RUU for the soft brick the other night, I was able to flash custom 4.4.4 ROMS using TWRP. Should I try openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.0-m7wls.img? I heard it is more stable than the other versions of TWRP. By the way. The reason I know it has to be TWRP is that I've downloaded several different 4.4.4 custom AOSP ROMS and they all fail when trying to install in TWRP. MD5 Checksum is right on all of them.

They say in the OP "use the latest TWRP (the tdhite 2.7.1.3 is good to go) or latest CWM/PhilZ Recovery to flash as the installer uses the new by-name partitioning." I am afraid of tdhite's 2.7.1.3 at the moment because I believe it may have been responsible for soft bricking my phone last time.

So tell me about InsertCoin's Sixth Sense. I'm just trying to find something different.
"Block: by-name" support was introduced in twrp 2.7.1.1 for both the M7_U(L) and M7WLS
there is also a 2.7.1.2 "unofficial" image that should work for roms requiring by-name support here --> http://mdmower.cmphys.com/twrp-m7spr/

I basically use a Stock rooted Developer Edition Rom for stability and ease of use ( this one > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2758956 ). I have tinkered with the GPE (too plane, Sense is more fun) and the Oneplus Rom (crap battery life) Insertcoin has their good points as does ARHD their very tweak-able with a great support team.
you should note none of this is for Sprint

So any idea what may be up with TWRP 2.7.1.1 NOT wanting to flash 4.4.4 ROMS, though? I'm a bit spooked by anything unofficial at the moment in terms of recovery because of my very bad experience yesterday. I've been flashing recoveries, ROMS and Kernels since 2010 and never had moments like I did yesterday--ones of sheer panic that is. lol.

Yeah. I imagine that is more stable. I was having trouble with GPS on AOSP 4.4.4 ROMS, but read about a fix and was looking forward to trying the fix after I flashed a 4.4.4 ROM back on my phone. I currently am running the stock rooted 4.4.2 ROM with Xposed framework tweaks. It's stable and has good battery life, but I like to play around with overclocking and liked being able to use s2w and dt2w features.

Are you having issues with your M8? If so, this is the wrong forum you want the HTC One (M8) forum this is for the M7.
Hey pretty new to this site so I apologize in advance for any stupid questions or not posting enough info! I have a htc one m7 telus. Recently I had soft bricked it by accident so I sideloaded a guru reset that was the stock android 4.3 Rom and then I flashed stocked recovery and everything, but for some reason everytime I go to update the phone via ota it crashes in the installation and soft bricks my phone again. So I was wondering if I flashed this Rom and stock recovery would it still soft brick my phone when I go to ota? Or will it fix the problem (whatever it may be lol).? Very frustrating and I can't figure out why! Please help.

No luck on 2.8.4.0 either, so here's what I did-
Got the ARHD 90.0 file, installed that.
It got updated and since ARHD 90.0 is rather minimalistic in terms of tweaks, I suggest you do too!

Well, I think it has to do with a fault in the actual file. If you do need Lollipop, I highly suggest you install ARHD because it is almost stock Sense with tweaks that make it much better. Cheers!
I have MaximusHD at the moment so LP is there already. I was just curious on the stock version. And yes, there has to be something wrong with the rom file.

I think it has to be because HTC hasn't officially updated it to Lollipop and they seem to far from actually doing it (as you can probably see here )
Either way, this ROM is pretty cool
Edit: P.S- once you have updated, you can use this modpack which is pretty good!

[Q] Downgrade from 5.0.2 to 4.4 via twrp ?

I was just wondering if i can go back from stock ota updated 5.0.2 to 4.4 kitkat with my twrp backup without problems ?
You can downgrade to 4.4.4 without issues. But I never tested such thing using TWRP backup, but, as far as I know, KitKat bootloader is different of Lollipop, so you may brick some files in your Titan. If you really want to downgrade, do it properly, by downloading DSDALL firmware and then, using fastboot to order the commands. If you want to automate downgrade process, you can use my tool that you can take a look here. You still need to download the stock ROM apart, tough. xD
Ok thank you very much. Guess I'll have to use titanium backup and fastboot then. Will definitely check your tool

No you can easily downgrade using twrp.. Just wipe system cache data and dalvik cache and restore the system, data and boot of your kk backup.. You should be good to go
Flashing the firmware will surely brick your device

You cant downgrade your bootloader, and yes you cant use custom 5.1 roms with kk bootloader But anyways, your bootloader is already upgraded, so it doesnt matter. And be careful about one thing, don't directly flash a STOCK kk rom on a lollipop 5.1 rom. Always downgrade to a stock based rom, and then do it.. CM11 based roms can be flashed directly (with wipes of course)

I highly recommend you do the ota update before flashing any ROMs, because it will update your bootloader, and avoid issues After you get your BL updated, you can freely flash any ROM of your choice, just make sure you do a clean flash

The 4.4 bootloader is fine with every rom out there. I wouldn't take the OTA since you are unlocked bootloader just flash the stock roms via twrp on the android develop section there is one for 4.4, 5.0, and 5.1. its the best way to not risk hard bricks. I have switched back and forth several times going this route. AGISCI posted them.
I also just got an xt1095, is this the latest ROM http://www.filefactory.com/file/5d66szhobgmx/VICTARA_TMO_XT1095_5.1_LPE23.32-21.6_cid9_CFC.xml.zip ?
Also, I have unlocked my bootloader but didn't root yet (this is with 4.4.4 installed). If i simply DL this image and flash it using TWRP (which i have installed) will it overwrite TWRP or break it in any way? Can I then simply root via TWRP ( assuming it is ok) and boom have a fully rooted Lollipop phone ?

You can't flash firmware files with TWRP, it won't work.
You have to flash it with RSDLite or fastboot.
As far as if it overwrites TWRP. If you use RSDLite, yes it will erase TWRP and replace it with the stock recovery. If you use fastboot to flash just skip the recovery image when you are flashing.

Because the firmware files are just standard images which get flashed and overwrite the partitions. The zips you run in TWRP are instructions on what to do and install. They are completely different things/formats.
