[Q] OTA .205 update and root - Xperia SP Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im using rooted 201 + recovery installed. i just got the 205 OTA update. if i update will i loose root? and if i do loose root can i root it with that new rooting app with out an issue? i mean with superuser and recovery might be an issue with it?

Update and see what it does, new towelroot app works a charm if you need to re-root.
Make sure you have the ota root protection ticked in SuperSU.

i dont have a option called ota root protection in my SU?

If you have pro version you do, or if you have flashed version tick the box that says enable pro features and you do.

Using TWRP recovery with non-rooted phone?

Hi Guys,
My company uses Good For Enterprise for email, which requires a phone to not be rooted. Well I was using Xposed and Rootcloak to hide root, but it appears an update patched that exploit. So I flashed the SBF for 4.4.2 and have Good running. Well I wanted to be able to use TWRP to go back to my rooted backups, but once I push TWRP to my device, my STOCK unrooted fresh SBF'ed received a "SuperSU Installer" in my apps and also a persistent notification wanting me to install SuperSU through Google Play or TWRP. Good then failed the Root check and locked me out. So I thought I could push the stock recovery back and it would go away, but nope, no dice. Any ideas? FWIW I'm running a DE Moto X from Verizon, unlocked bootloader on 4.4.2 system and bootloader.

Seems you did everything right BUT when TWRP ask if you wanna install root or superuser.. forget which it says. Just say no. Then you should be root free. Hope that helps!

Thanks, but when I was in TWRP recovery it did ask me to root, and I said no; but it still had the "SuperSU Installer" in the app drawer, and couldn't be removed.

hmm, well if you say you came from stock, flashed TWRP and SU installed itself. than maybe just removing root would work. There's a guide for that, probably in the general thread. also, I read that there is a way to load multiple ROMs that's stickied in one of the threads. That could be exactly what you need!!
Don't remember which thread so you have to find it.

Sent a new phone with 4.3....what would you do?

So I was having issue with my note 3 ( bluetooth issues ) I upgraded to 4.4.2
AT&T sent me a new / refurb phone and it has 4.3 on it.
So Im curious on what you guys would do?
Upgrade to 4.4.2 and stick with all this stupid bloatware
or
Root, and rom it?
If that latter, does anyone have any links to do that ( I used to do it with my S2, S3 and S4 )
thank s
Root it. It's not worth the grief to upgrade it to 4.4.2.
You can root it and use safestrap to install custom ROMs, or just enjoy the stock setup with root.
Sent from my locked down Note 3 via the tapatalk app
ROOT AND ROM it!
I was ROOTED and ROM'd, but I got bit by the OTA Upgrade bug... I went through all the hassle of downgrading, unrooting, resetting, then upgrading.
Now I've got the fresh new bloated OTA official 4.4.2 and NO ROOT.
Should I use Kingo? is that still safe for the Note 3 on 4.3?
well I rooted it with Kingo, However I'm having issues with SafeStrap.
Downloaded the APK and Busybox.
Installed SafeStrap and installed the recovery. When I manually reboot or reboot into the recovery via the app, it just boot as normal
Root it!
I rooted with Kingo, no problems, the first day I got the Note 3 and took the Nb4 update. I was so lucky to catch the KK update and froze it mid-download with ttb. I am so glad!! I wouldn't be able to use this thing without root. I have installed safestrap and roms without issue. (staying on 4.3 roms mind you)

try uninstalling ss then install it again, make sure it is 3.71 not 3.72. 3.71 doesnt need busybox if im not mistaken.

I am going to use Kingo tomorrow as well I think. How does get root? Will it have superuser on it after it roots or do you have to put it on the phone yourself?
Thanks.

Did you try rebooting into recovery via a power menu? That is what the tutorial says it should do. Hold power to bring up the menu and it should then have an option to reboot into recovery. I am going to try safestrap too I think.

As far as I know all you have to do is download SuperSU from the playstore after your phone reboots from clicking "make it rain".
I personally have not used this method to root my phone because I was already rooted.
UPDATE : After watching videos online, it seems that SuperSU is not needed with this root method. Without SuperSU, there doesnt seem to be a method to unroot as of right now. I'm sure Chainfire (maker of SuperSU) has already heard about this and is working on a fix for SuperSU. He personally hasn't posted anything about it though.
UPDATE 2 : Apparently the latest SuperSU 1.99r5 fixes this issue. Problem is, that isn't the version on the Google Playstore.

The SuperSU from the Play Store will not work. You need to get version 1.99 and it will work fine.

I just private messaged you a download link for the SuperSU 1.99. Let me know if it works
All I did was extract the apk from the zip file and uploaded it to my dropbox. I tested it on my phone and it worked.
UPDATE : Chainfire just updated the apk listed on the playstore. So just go on there and download that version and you will be set.
Thank you guys I got it works great I how geo can get the bootloader unlocked next that would be amazing thanks again guys.:good:

[Q] downgrade from kitkat to gingerbread

Hi, I need to downgrade from kitkat to gingerbread in order to make Barclays pingit work. I tried many things but the damn app to my disgust won't work on rooted phones. Is it just a matter of using ODIN? And which gingerbread ROM should I use? Can you please send me some links thanks! :crying:
Have you tried temporary unrooting from the superSU/Superuser options then installing the app.

Hi, thanks for the reply, when I install SuperSU it tells me I need to update binary SU by doing a manual Re-root? What does it mean?
Just flash this in recovery http://download.chainfire.eu/370/Sup...erSU-v1.80.zip download link is at bottom of page.
EDIT: here's the latest update at bottom of page http://download.chainfire.eu/396/SuperSU/
Thank you, I flashed it, went to SuperSu, did the full un-root, it worked as the app disappeared but the damn Barclays app still finds the root and wont work...is there any other way around it? Or downgrading...
Found this but you need to install the 'Xposed Framework'' http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2577095
Thanks but I've already downgraded to stock rom, did what I had to do with Barclays Pingit and re upgraded to kitkat again...now I won't be doing this crap anymore, I will just buy a cheap 2nd hand mob, install the almighty Barclays apps and use that when needed...easy...:cyclops:
Yeah probably a better idea until the almighty Barclays app gets an update so customers can use it on rooted phone, but tbh i can't see that happening anytime soon.

You could install xposed and use root cloak. Apps that don't work if you have root are just stupid.

So what about getting root?

Now that many 5C models have the emui 5.0/nougat update, has anyone tried rooting it yet? Also is it still the case that Xposed is still not available for nougat??
yeah theres no android N xposed even abdroid 8 is coming already... i dont see point on rooting without xposed since theres no root adblock apps.
I like to install sound mods and I use lucky patcher to remove ads and get in-app stuff, freedom app as well. They all need root. Just downloaded open kirin twrp for emui 5.0. It's been deleted from xda posts but seek and ye shall find. I also have the revolution recovery twrp for nougat but although it worked for emui 5 beta, apparently it doesn't with the proper release. I downloaded superuser for emui 5.0/nougat so now I'm going to do various backups and give rooting a go.
usually there comes bug fix OTA in few weeks after android version updte, i wait till device is discontinued updates and root thn

Okay, so I was just about to root but then I see your post but can u explain in more detail please why it's better to wait for final ota. And do you know for sure if/when there will be more OTA bug fixes??

waiting for official ota is good to be sure that region is correct so youre able to make calls and text, but NEM-L21 has only one region so it doesnt matter if you use official OTA or use proxy method.
Okay so I have successfully rooted my phone by flashing super user zip file through twrp! Damn shame Xposed framework is not available for nougat though but at least I can install sound mods and can use lucky patcher to get rid of ads in apps and use freedom to get free inapp stuff. Also I use root essentials and L speed app. Beggars can't be choosers

I just tried it. Both the unofficial TWRP and the modded SuperSU seem to work so far.
Yes I think we used the same files and installation. OpenKirinHi6250 twrp and superuser.zip for emui 5.0. :good:

Seems to work fine so far. But I really have no idea why this TWRP works while the official doesn't. Same about this modded SuperSU.

Have you or anyone else had any problems installing busy box? I tried installing busy box pro(sterricson app) and it would not install. I tried all 4 paths to install to but it failed every time. So I installed busy box pro(jrummy app) and after running a script in the app to mount read/write I was able to install successfully. Just to make sure I install to su/bin, su/xbin, system/bin and system/xbin. I ran a root/busy box checker app.and it says both installed correctly...

Be careful though, I and some other user noticed that restoring backups from this TWRP will result in a phone with no sound at all. I don't know if this is fixable, factory reset don't put it back to normal.
Other than that, this TWRP seemed, but I can say for sure. In any case, DO NOT RESTORE BACKUPS from this TWRP.
