question about updating with flash tool - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

can i flash any stock based rom with root with flashtool? im stuck on stock 4.2.2 and id like to update to kit kat

Well, you can't flash any stock-based ROM with Flashtool. WIth FlashTool you can flash Stock Rom (Official Sony firmwares - .ftf files), but for other custom ROMs based on Stock, you need to have a recovery installed (XZDualRecovery, CWM or similar).
Is your 4.2.2 rom rooted? If yes, you can install a recovery on it (following this thread), and then you can upgrade to KitKat following this thread. After that, you can basically install any custom stock-based KitKat ROM of your choice, from by flashing from recovery.
Goes without saying, read the threads really carefully before doing any actions.
If you're unsure how everything works, you always have a reference in this thread.

[Q] Rooting privileges lost

Hi, i recently updated to a new custom rom.(from rocket rom gb v23 to rocket rom ics v1)
Unfortunately it looks like installing the new custom rom made me lose my root privileges on the phone.
Is there a quick way to root the phone again?
Do i need to follow the guides to root the stock rom and apply them to the custom rom or is it different?
Thanks
If I were you I would be careful since RR ICS has a Samsung kernel that might have the brick bug..
You're better of using PC Odin and flash one of the prerooted GB ROMs, get CF-Root for it and then flash RR ICS from there again if you would like
The thing is that i was on a cf-rooted gb custom rom before flashing rr ics v1, but on rr thread, in order to install the ics rom from the gb one, they say to first flash abyss kernel 4.2 - full wipe - and the install the ics rom.
I think that's the passage where i lost root, but i may be wrong.
Would restoring a clockworkmod backup with gb custom rom(rr v23) be ok?
One more question, what's the difference between flashing with odin(never used) and flashing from recovery?
Thanks for your reply
Flashing through AbyssKernel should not cause you to loose root, it just sometimes happens :/
I think it would be safer to follow the PC Odin route and flash a prerooted GB ROM, get CWM recovery and then do your flashing/restoring from there
PC Odin communicates directly to the bootloader when flashing, hence it's safer, while CWM uses the current kernel you have so if you're on an affected kernel you're at risk

[Q] Go back to stock ROM from Cyanogenmod/CWM

Hi all
I have CM 10.2 and CWM recovery installed on my Z. Now I'm going to sell it and would like to "revert" to the stock ROM.
I realized that the Flash Tool by Bin4ry and Androxyde only works with stock, locked bootloaders so I cannot install original ROMs the "normal" way.
I assume I need to find a stock ROM image zipped in a format that is compatible with CWM recovery, and flash from there?
Thanks for all help
nope it should work with any Rom just download the ftf you want and flash it it would work with any Sony Device either Locked or Unlocked

Installing Custom Rom

Hi there, i am on stock rom 4.3 and i am considering to flash a custom rom. It is going to be my First flash of a custom rom and i am wondering if something is not working as it should, will i be able to return to stock with no problems? If i install a custom Kernel as well will kies install stock firm as usual (to return to stock)? Or the only method is a full backup and restore? Restoring method restores kernel too? Thank you for your help.
U must rooting your device, next install custom recovery and backup your rom, thats all, and next try the first install omni rom
I am already rooted. Omni is one of my thoughts. Should i flash a custom kernel after omni or it is not mandatory?

[Q] please help

hello guys
I have the c6602, and running 4.4.4
I've just unlocked the bootloader and rooted my XZ
I want to install one of the new lollipop ROM's so i need a kernel that has a recovery mod to flash the ROM
the one i found is Doomlord's kernel [.230], but as i know [.230] doesn't work with 4.4.4, if it's just used to get the recovery into the device and be able to flash a ROM, what would be the next step after installing the ROM?
should flash a newer kernel? or it is automatically installed [integrated] in the ROM's zip file?
thnx
The new kernel is integrated in the zip file and will replace the current one when you flash the rom. You will also get the recovery that comes with it.

back to stock based rom

Hello! I have a z3 compact on carbon rom with an ub. Im trying to go back to stock but using my backup or by flashing a stock based rom it never boots. What are the steps i need to take to get back to a stock based rom like "xperience"
If the trouble is flashing through TWRP, you can always try using flashtool with a stock ftf or a modified one that has TWRP and root already.
