How did Samsung partition the Note (N7000 16GB)?
Code:
[FONT=Comic Sans MS][SIZE=4]CACHE: Start:54.5MB End:264MB Size:210MB[/SIZE][/FONT][FONT=Comic Sans MS][SIZE=4]
FACTORYFS: Start:281MB End:1174MB Size:893MB[/SIZE][/FONT][SIZE=4]
[FONT=Comic Sans MS] DATAFS: Start:1174MB End:3322MB Size:2147MB[/FONT]
[FONT=Comic Sans MS] UMS: Start:3322MB End:11.9GB Size:11.9GB[/FONT]
[FONT=Comic Sans MS] HIDDEN: Start:11.9GB End:15.8GB Size:537MB[/FONT][/SIZE]
As you can see, the DATAFS partition only has 2147MB, hardly enough for much games or resource heavy apps. e.g. Facebook (30~100MB) Spotify (100~300+MB), and so, we need much more space to store these apps.
People might redirect you to download .pit files and ODIN, but as always, using ODIN is, to say the least, quite risky. Well, this method does NOT require ODIN, cables or a computer!

Now that I've got everything clear, let's get into the juicy stuff...
This file basically reduces the space assigned to cache and preload partitions and reassigns that extra space to your internal sdcard.
What is preload?
Used for storing Samsung's pre-loaded bloatwares like some wallpapers and "Wonders of Nature" video that you find on your phone after a factory reset or after buying a new phone.
Reducing the cache partition:
Cache basically stores the apps from Google play while they are downloading. Google Play apks has a maximum size of 50MB, so reducing it won't matter.
Click to collapse
What To Download?
If your ROM does not use /preload to store any files, download the file with the tag (Non-Preload ROMs).
Download Partition Table app from the Play Store and check /preload. If it has more than 100MB used, your ROM needs preload.
If you need more apps than data (documents, music etc.), download the 10/11GB Data Partition files.
If you need more data than apps, download the 9GB UMS Partition files.
How do I do this?
It's like flashing any ordinary zip file! Follow the steps to not brick your phone!
Downloads are at the bottom of the post.
Your computer will not be needed for this guide!
Download Philz recovery. Use the latest stable version available. Check here.
Make a nandroid backup to your EXTERNAL SD CARD. Make sure this backup is working.
Flash Philz from recovery.
Flash the zip file. (Currently only 16GB model)
After rebooting to recovery (it's auto), you will see some mounting errors. Relax, nothing's wrong. Go into mounts and storage and format /system, /data, /sdcard0 and /preload. Do not format anything else.
Restore your nandroid/install a new ROM (You can flash your original recovery back now.)

Great Job @Irwenzhao !!!
Now we can safely do partition without having to risk odin. An advice though, I think it's not allowed to post direct download link to philz.. Have u asked for permission? Or maybe you should just state what vers. of recovery is to be used and post a link to philz thread? Just a friendly reminder. Thank you for your hard work. Cheers!

No, this uses Philz Recovery to repartition, thus removing the risk of unstable connections through a cable.

It looks like the OP didn't test it on a N7000.
And until now no member risked to install it.
Understandable not only because of this risk (untested app).
Who really need this? Simple cleaning of apps is a much better approach.
And there ist a good chance of additional problems when installing other roms (stock or custom).

You'll be surprised how much storage gets eaten up on Kit Kat using ART. I have a lot of apps - over 3.5gb worth of app data. I don't have a single game installed and it's running as clean as possible.
I want to do this to my N7000 but I'm a little tentative. Then again, the OP seems to know what he's doing.
Edit: Tried to flash using the latest Phillz Recovery (6.41.6) and it throws an error saying it cannot be flashed (Status 255). This is with 5GB/9GB data partition zip with preload.

Yea sorry I don't have a N7000 to test on, but I researched as much as I could before releasing it. If anyone has an extra n7000 to test it(I doubt it), I would appreciate it very much
There are some people who needs loads of apps, but if you do think that clearing apps is a better approach, go ahead. I doubt there'll be any risks in installing a custom ROM (I've checked the sizes of CM and some others (AOSP)) and they all fit into the system partition nicely. Flashing stock ROM does not work. You'll have to flash a .pit file in order for a stock ROM to be flashed. Thanks for taking your time to voice your opinion.

I agree, since ART doesn't use JIT compiler.
I suggest doing a little research first, but there aren't many pages on re-partitioning with recovery, considering only Philz can do it.
Now that u mention ART, I should probably switch soon considering xposed doesn't work for me

[Q] Rooting and Installing a ROM on Galaxy Note

Before you send me a link to Dr. Ketan's guide, I'd just like to say that his instructions are incomprehensible for me. I understand English isn't his main language, so I will not follow his guide in fear of bricking my device.
So I request for someone (preferably someone whose main language is English) to provide comprehensive instructions on how to root my device which can't be rooted using the traditional method (I have one of the newer kernels). Instructions on what to do next to install a custom ROM would also be appreciated. Ultimately, I hope I can install the Rocket ROM without bricking my device.
By no means am I trying to insult Dr. Ketan. I'm just saying that instructions should be given in clear, comprehensive English to avoid a misunderstanding. Dr. Ketan put in effort in that guide, that I can wholeheartedly agree.
It's just a shame many of XDA's professionals don't reside in an English-speaking country.

There is nothing shame in having less professionals in english-speaking country Not everyone are genius in this world. So stop saying so.Though you dint have motive to hurt anyone I fell the last line is little harsh to me.

I must apologize. I mean no disrespect to non-English speakers. I should have worded my last sentence better.
I have no qualms about having non-English speakers in the community. They're vital to promoting the website to other people.
I wouldn't mind his (Dr. Ketan) guide so much except for the fact that we're dabbling in things that could potentially brick our phones. To some people, bricking is totally alright with them as they have the income to simply replace their phones. However, to people like me, breaking or bricking a phone basically means having no phone for the next few years.
As such, it shouldn't be selfish of me to ask for a guide that addresses any issues I might have in clear, comprehensive English.
Once again I mean no disrespect to Dr. Ketan and other non-English speakers here. I'm just very concerned about my device and the risk I'm taking in rooting my phone. I was very harsh with my words, calling the guide incomprehensible when really, only a handful of sentences were misleading.
Now, with that out of the way, I'll go back on topic. When I mentioned his guide, I specifically meant this one.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Which part do I follow to get root and CWM on my phone?
Chances of bricking samsung phones are extremely low. If you are afraid to bricke yours. Try and understand ketan's guide.
It is in my opinion comprehensible.
But i will do my best to simplify it.
Download stock firmware kk9.
Download cfroot kernel kk9.
Download odin.
All from ketans thread.
Switch off phone. Turn on phone holding vol down. Power and home. And then ignore the warning and continue.
Open up odin click on pda and open stock firmware kk9. And start.
After reboot. Go to setting application. Enable usb debug and unknown sources.
In cfroot kernel folder. Click on not rooted yet. . Done.

Please, don't be sorry. Clearly I'm the simple-minded one since I'm the only one having issues reading your guide. You spent a lot of time on it, so I'm the one who should be sorry for thrashing it.
OK, I'll try to help you, although I'm also not a native English speaker.
1. go to this thread and download N7000XXKK9 rom. Unzip it (password: samfirmware.com) and you'll get a .tar.md5 file and a .dll file.
2. download PC Odin from here.
3. read and follow this carefully - it's very comprehensive and has a picture guide to PC Odin flashing.
4. now you'll have an old GB rom. If you get stuck in bootloop after flashing is done, don't panic. Pull out your battery, wait apprx. 30 secs, put it back in. Press volume up + home + power button and your phone will boot into stock recovery. Do 'wipe cache' followed by 'wipe user data/factory reset'. Reboot your phone.
5. download the zip attachment. Unzip it and start not-rooted-yet.bat. Follow the instructions to the letter.
6. if all goes well, you'll have a rooted KK9 rom at this point, and can flash anything you like from its CWM Recovery.
I hope my pidgin English is good enough.

New problem: I can't download from Hotfile. Does anyone have a direct link? I tried googling it and all I found was Multiupload links that wouldn't load on my browser and Hotfile links which download at 5kb/s.
Try downloading from here:

Are Custom Roms secure?

I have been wondering, how secure are android roms? What I mean is, if I should be worried about getting personal data stolen or any such thing concerning web surfing, online purchases, etc? Which is more secure? Stock Roms or cusom Roms? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

This is a harsh response to what I believe is a very valid question by the original poster. People ask questions because they have concerns or simply do not know the answer. They do not need people like you having a shot at them simply because they asked a question.
To the OP: The people who put together the custom ROMs you find on XDA are mostly genuine people looking to share their knowledge and experience by building ROMs that make our devices operate faster, smoother, and feature enhanced. They are not out to load them with malware to scam you and suck your credit and identity dry.
Having said that however, it could be done if the wrong person or group of people starting building ROMs with that purpose.
I personally will only ever download a ROM from a builder or group of builders who have a credible reputation here in the Forums to be sure.
I hope that eases you mind a little.
Take care.
I didnt meant to be harsh... Sry if it feel so...

I have always had that question. I have to agree on only installing roms from devs with a credible reputation, at the end of the day this is what I would use for everything and I need to feel ane be sure I am secure. Thanks for your answere, I can keep my peace in that aspect.
Thanks to all the devs that dedicate there time with their amazing Rom projects!! Keep up the great work!!!
Allmost every "custom" roms include a rooted kernel and CWM recovery. That will give anyone who can do "adb" operations the option to reboot your phone to recovery. Sim,pattern or pin lock doesn't matter as long as phone is in their hand.
Battery off - reboot to CWM, connect usb, and everything on your phone is available to copy to computer using adb commands.
The only way to secure custom ROM run by a rooted kernel with CWM is to ENCRYPT all files on your phone.
As a ROM Maker, I always care about every permissions for every single file. I everytime match everything true permissions but not 777 even if I fail 999 times.

Think about this. Someone finds your phone, you had lost it. Turns off pulls out sim so you can't find its location, reboots into recovery, connects to computer, then adb shell and do the command dd /data. Dumps all the data into a .IMG file. Repacks it into an Odin flash able tar. Flashes to his phone. Has all your info.
I wouldn't worry though, most people know nothing of this. I don't worry

O-T and AlwaysDroid, you guys are absolutely right, but the OP still raises a legitimate concern. There's lots of other threat assessments that will rule out physical access. It's a matter of practicality. In some places, traditional martial arts self-defense training can help or save you, in others most clashes do not involve hand-to-hand fighting.
I'm typing on xda app, do forgive Mr for forgetting names, but others here are right, too. A developer's reputation goes a long way, and these teams also put their code out for others to see. I can't tell what's inside, but rely on the fact that others look at it to learn, compile themselves, cherry pick, etc. Also, I do prefer when devs post MD5s.
Back to OP, which primarily asked about data leakage, is there an android equivalent of Little Snitch on Macs?

Yes they are
use basic custom roms if u wish. . which r stable..

Not really :/ almost no one can do this, I mean unless the guy that finds your phone is a resident here or at roots wiki and even then, I doubt it. The thing is, as long as your rooted, your data just isn't as safe. You couldn't do that on stock, cause its not rooted. The only thing I could imagine for the future would be a recovery that asks for a pin code before allowing you to enter. Its unavoidable, and really nothing to worry about. Just turn off USB debugging when not in use, use dev options to only give apps root access and not adb (not sure if it stops it in recovery as well) and don't lose your phone.

System encryption is a 4.1 feature; not with cm 7

Well, Samsung stopped updating this capable phone which is similar to the nexus s(they claimed it can't handle ICS or jb while nexus s gets the latest firmware) Custom ROMs especially jb ROMs make your phone feel new unlike stock which are outdated. Just flash one from a credible developer & u won't regret
There is no motive from the developers. What should they get? Your FB passwords? And sell them to your girlfriend?
Agree

I have always had that question. I have to agree on only installing roms from devs with a credible reputation, at the end of the day this is what I would use for everything and I need to feel ane be sure I am secure. Thanks for your answere, I can keep my peace in that aspect.
Thanks to all the devs that dedicate there time with their amazing Rom projects!! Keep up the great work!!!

I am 100% agree, with the your comment bro. We should install the ROM from recognized and good reputed developers.

Really? So if there was - just for the sake of argument - a backdoor or a keylogger on your phone that was placed there by a dev, you're saying they would get nothing out of that? Is a bit naive dont you think?

[Q] Samsung Galaxy GT-S5839i - Flash assistance

Hello everyone, Found this set of forums while looking for information on how to and what is the best version of, to flash my phone due to several simple but aggravation issues so any assistance on choosing any particular version of flash would be deeply appreciated.
My main issue with the standard software is actually just the inabilty to to move ALL apps on to my SD card considering the internal capacity on this model is only 162.1 mb and with apps like Facespaz taking up a wopping 21 meg on its own, well I'm sure there are some of you who know where I am coming from.
Anyhow, any assistance would be deeply appreciated.
Kind regards
Talzanar

XXLI1 (deodexed, by Alucard1989pl), root, just use Link2SD to link you apps to the second SD partition (both should be primary).
If it worked, please hit the thanks button and say if it worked or not. (BECAUSE IT DOESN'T WORK FOR ME ! ! ! ! ! (Strange, because before it worked fine (I used, yes, useD, Rafael.Baugis kernel, and now I don't) and I get now: "Error: no such device")).

Thank you for this information, For as much geek as I would declare my self to be, admitingly phones are somthing I have just never given any attention or thought towards, shame really.
Seems like there is quite the community these days, Is there a link to a list of Flash Mod's to see what other options are out there?
* Thanked for you're post*

Not enough space for new apps cm11

Hello
Im on latest cm11 (i used partition table tool-optimal) and I have about 400+mb of free memory on my intrernal sdcard.
However, I can't install new apps (not from store nor from file manager), it says i dont have enough of space.
What can i do with it?
Thanks
Try run ng cm cleaner, I had a similar issue where when flashing from stock my cache didn't get wiped for some reason and took up all my memory, ran cm cleaner and cleared out the cache giving my memory back, also just check the files saved in storage, ROMs and backups can take a lot of memery, best to save them on the sdcard.

Thanks, but I have enough of free space everywhere, still cant install anything.
Can anybody competent help me?
Should i get some logs?
Your welcome but sorry misread your og post, not to experienced with partition tool, never used it.
Other wise, there was no need for the insult, if your more re competent than me, than you should be able to figure that out for your self.
Some one else on here should be able to help you.

Statements like this are considered abusive and ARE NOT condoned here at XDA-Developers.
Now, you've done something that is not a standard practice to do, and that's repartitioning your device. This is extremely risky and honestly more than likely the culprit of your current dilemma.
Did you just install CM11? If so, did you follow the installation instructions in the OP? And a thousand more questions that I could ask in an attempt to help you out of your situation. Always include as much information as possible when asking questions like this.

You've been warned once already. Now you're going to insult yet someone else who is trying to help you.
@ olionephanko this forum is operated by volunteers... Being rude means no one will bother to help you...
Another non-competent post with redundant info.
Keep your OT for yourself.

Let's all remember to treat each other with a little respect and decency and not call people who try to help us incompetent, lest no one wants to help in the future..

[Stock Firmware] SM-T807A - T807AUCU1CPI8_T807AATT1CPI8_ATT - Marshmallow

Stock Marshmallow firmware for the Galaxy tab S SM-T807A (ATT model)
Finally we managed to get hold of the stock MM firmware for the T807A. This is extremely rare and credits go to @luckyyang for finding it and @wojo797 for paying to download it and sharing it. (Make sure you hit the thanks button for these guys)
To install:
1. Extract the tar from the zip file
2. Reboot to DOWNLOAD mode
3. Place ALL_ATT_T807AUCU1CPI8_T807AATT1CPI8_CL9294073_QB10977723_REV00_user_low_ship.tar in the AP slot of ODIN
4. click START
NOTE: I have removed the useless USERDATA.IMG which only contained unecessary dalvik cache odex files. This will be rebuilt by the system at first boot. This may take anything up to 10 minutes first boot.

Out of 40 or so downloads since posting this, apparently oh so needed firmware, you are the only one to have had the decency to say thanks. [emoji106]
The others couldn't even be bothered to hit the thanks button.
Will make a note to myself not to bother in future [emoji52]
I keep getting a FAIL right after cache.img. Any ideas as to what I can do to resolve this?

Even if your contributions (as well as other users contributions on xda) rarely get even 5% of the recognition they should, doing it for the sake of helping others without expecting nothing in return is still an enjoyable experience, and (maybe I'm wrong) it is the feeling I always felt about your hundreds of posts here, helping not one but several noobs at the same time while also contributing with several firmwares, modified kernels, etc.
For what is worth, your contributions here are KEY to make this tablet a LOT more usable than it is I and hope you can still find it pleasant to do it (not just this tablet, every other android gadget you may have in the future).
Also, expect a couple of beers next week when I get to pay my credit card (its credit is running on fumes).
Oh and expect some questions on how to conserve the root from LP and upgrade to MM. Hope to achieve without bothering.

I'm not asking for donations, nor do I ever. Thats entirely up to the user.
But it's a simple fact that even something as simple as clicking thanks is too much trouble for most and this is not just noobs.
It's just one extra click of a mouse.
Noone has thanked either of the credits who deserve recognition too.
As anyone can see it has been a team effort to bring this why can't everyone else be a team player too?[emoji19]
It's good for a developer to get feedback it shows there is interest in what is done and that's how I see the thanks button.
However it's also nice to see replies with a little feedback on how things are working. It also keeps the post relevant and in view instead of disappearing into the depths.
Sounds like a rant, but it's not. It's more despair at the hit and run attitude.
It's not just this forum, I post in many other device forums and it's always the same.
Anyway thanks for the feedback, it's lonely for us devs at this end, it's nice to get some.

Nevermind! I had tried different ports using different cables, re-extracted the .tar and redownloaded the .zip altogether, but I tried again on my laptop at home later and it worked like a charm. Much thanks to the OP and other contributors.

Afraid not, but I think your firmware is available anyway.
Kingroot doesn't seem to work on this version (which I kind of expected). Is there any conceivable way to root the T807A on Marshmallow that I'm not finding?

Thank you all so much for this. This literally just saved me roughly 100 that I was going to have to pay to either get samsung to do the exact same thing or get AT&T to send me another through insurance...
