[Q] New to andoid/moto x

Hello there.
so I'm plannin on getting moto x from verizon and have a few questions.
So I can root my moto x using this

but what do I do after? Install SuperSU? CWM app? How do I get recovery menu and what's the purpose?
Sorry for so many question, I've been reading a lot and its a ton of information. So if anyone could simply explain it to me, that would be great.

Rooting your phone just lets you do what you want with your phone whether it's tethering and using hotspot for free or changing the theme, if you don't want to do any of that then you don't even need to root, for a beginner I wouldn't root your phone until you want to do something that requires root

I'd say if you don't know then you don't need it right now. Play around with your phone and get to know it. Feel her out. You'll find some things you want to change, or get rid of. When you get to that point, then you'll need root.

I've been using android in the past for a short period of time, but I guess that doesnt count. So I want to root my future moto x for example, I want to get rid of those Verizon stock apps, cuz I wont be using those. And like to freeze the OTA updates. And just explore what I can do wit it, since its an open source OS.

Cwm recovery on the Verizon moto x is not available because the bootloader isn't unlocked unless you get dev edition, but root is available with PwnMyMoto and you can use xposed modules to change toggles, notification bar layout and nav bar height etc. If you use that root method and want to return to stock make sure you get familiar with RSDlite and fastboot. IMHO the stock ROM layout is already near perfect so besides some xposed stuff and freezing apps via Tbu there's not much more that really needs to be done to this phone, I think you'll be very happy with it as is. Active notifications, touchless controls, Motorola connect etc are awesome. Let us know how you like it when you receive it!

Thnx for solid reply. So to my understanding, in order to use TBU I need to root first, right? And Since cwm recovery is no available due to locked bootloader I wont be able to flash custom roms, if there are any? Not saying I want to, just want to know =) Any other option of recovery?

yes thats right tibu does need root since your looking to freeze/uninstall system apps. And as far as recoveries, there is a workaround called safestrap which is based off of TWRP that uses "rom slots" Im not entirely sure how it works though, probably someone more knowledgeable about that can chime in.

I am about to get a Moto X from Verizon and I know it has a locked bootloader
I never dealt with a locked phone in the past and this will be my first moto so I am doing a lot of reading
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I guess the phone will come with 4.2 on it so I'll have two options:
1) Use safestrap and flash 4.4 as a second rom. I am guessing the disadvantage will be loss of disk space for the second rom (maybe other disadvantages, I don't know) but I'll be able to do nandroid backups and flash zips
2) Use the JCase method to root using SlapMyMoto and MotoWpNoMo, etc. (I'll be rooted, but no flashing roms or zips, or nandroid backups)
In that case, which method do you guys really recommend? Do I really need custom roms on this phone since it is almost stock and I can still get xposed to do a lot of the things I'd be interested in with just the root?
If I use the JCase method, do I lose the ability to use safestrap in the future?

The moto xs leaving moto maker for Verizon should all be 4.4 at this point. Can't whole heartedly speak to your other questions though.

I'm rooted, using xposed and gravity box. Very happy with phone. Came from an s3 and have to say I don't miss flashing Roms. Real learning curve for me to root but JCase methods worked perfect and google was my friend through the many steps. Good luck!

But reading the replies here as well as other threads, I see that most people are pretty content with the stock rom + root + gravitybox/xposed. That's great to know.

Safestrap works on 4.4 too

But you have to have satestrapped it when you were on the 4.2 bootloader, correct? So if you took an ota or if your phone shipped with 4.4, your bootloader was updated and you can no longer safestrap

I want to root the Moto X. The thing is, I've never stuck with a stock ROM before. Every time I get a new phone I root, install a recovery, and a custom ROM. It's usually the first thing I do before even playing around or using the phone.
However, with the Moto X, the stock ROM is phenomenal. I would still like to root in order to use Xposed and Titanium Backup. I'd also like to install a custom recovery for backup and just in case anything ever goes wrong.
My question: will I still receive OTA updates while rooted on a stock ROM?
If yes, will installing these updates cause problems to the ROM, revoke root access, or remove the custom recovery?
If yes, how would I go about installing an update while maintaining root and a custom recovery?

Pros and cons of rooting.

Going to flash back to stock image. Any compelling reason to root? I'm rooted now and really the only reason to root would be to restore my titan backups of a couple games. I like the thought of being able to get updates hassle free.
Thoughts?

Xposed, Ad blocking, tasked, TiBu, LED notifications and Layers are the main reasons I'll stay rooted. You have to weigh the pros and cons based on what you consider most important.

When you have Twrp-recovery installed
A prerooted stock rom is a possibility.
- download latest version to internal memory.
- boot Twrp-recovery
- wipe system and caches
- flash rom (zip file)
- reboot.

ATM, my interest in rolling back to stock is insure that I can use us cellular towers in fi. I read that running pure nexus could mess with this ability. I have yet to see a usc tower show as my "network". Latest fi update said it included that..

I'm ocd about battery life so I root to run custom kernels and use dark themes to take advantage of the oled screen. and I can't used android pay because my small town bank can't be used with it so I'm not missing out on anything

Extreme lag stock 7.1.1

Hi, I have been seeing significant lag of my phone and various times to the point that my phone becomes inoperable for a period of time and after the phone recovers it never goes back to full speed., I have to restart. I'm stock not rooted anymore and recently formatted and started from scratch but see no improvement. This is especially annoying when running android auto at which point the phone and the app barely work. Any suggestions? I don't think its a better thing because i had it happen at 60 and at 40 though definitely see it more at 40 or less. Is there a good way to see what app might be causing this?

You don't need root to install a custom kernel. In fact you don't even need to install TWRP. Using ADB you can flash the custom kernel. Just make sure you have USB debugging enabled in Developer Options and make sure your bootloader is unlocked.

Same exact issue here. F*** Google for screwing up our stock phones and not fixing them. What would you suggest for a kernal and rom. It has been a long time since I was rooted with a custom rom but I can't take this for another day.

Hello... I think all ROMs perform the same in term of fluidity and speed. Some have different features and customization options. I run Pure Nexus on my N6, N6P and Pixel XL. All use ElementalX kernel. I like this configuration. But there is a lot of different possibilities.
I suggest you to look at the forum and read a little bit the first posts of the different ROMs/kernels and see what they have to offer. :good:

I've had this same exact issue. I thought about switching back to MM because I had great battery life on MM. I also thought about flashing Franco Kernel and go from there. It is one that has the option to hide that the bootloader is unlocked. I don't really want to have my bootloader unlocked, and I don't think I can make changes to the kernel easily without having it rooted, something else I also don't want to do. Maybe MM is the best option. Google is still sending out security updates for MM.

Well problem solved I should say. Used nexus root kit to root and install Pure nexus. Only issue I had was I had a gapps from 2015 that crashed everything so I reinstalled with a new gapps. Working great and the speed is back.

Then unless you wanted an old copy, you downloaded the wrong version of Pure Nexus. The latest version includes the Google apps in the ROM, eliminating the need to flash a GApps package.
