I've had my G1 since Christmas of 08 and I finally decided to root. I jailbroke my ipod touch, and I heard rooting is similar to that, so i'm up for the task. I have firmware 1.6 and build number DMD64.
What exactly do I need to do, and what is the best rom to date that is good to use?

Don't mean to be rude but did you read this before clicking New Thread?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=543081
Did you search or anything?
You won't get anyone here that's going to hold your hand or do it for you because in the twenty or so minutes that you waiting for the answer to be handed to you you could have found it for yourself by reading the above link and/or searching. So you are in actually just wasting your time posting your question. By the way since you are obviously new to XDA here's a fair warning. There are three types of people on here... those that help, those that are idle (just read but don't post) and those that need everything done for them. What kind do you think your first impression made and what kind of people do you think get flammed by the Senior Members that spend hours every week helping people like yourself by answering the same questions over and over again even after it's already been answered. And you're probably thinking "Instead of writing out this whole damn thing, why didn't he just tell me the answer?" Well because if you don't learn this way you're only going to rely on us from here on out if you are spoon fed. Again, I'm not trying to be a d!ck but if you want to make it here on XDA you have to play by the rules. Happy rooting!

A rooted phone is timeless, you can have any version of Android, whenever you want it. Therefore, it makes sense that an old thread is just as good as a new thread that has the same exact information other than the rom you flash.
Ok, I finished rooting my G1 and got to the HTC v.1.5.2 screen, now i'm going to install a rom
Thanks to all of the guides and youtube videos, I now have Manup456 Eclair 2.1 V1.5 on my G1! Just going back to put back in my ringtones and files. It's like I have a brand new phone!

"Seen" well then you were only looking for about 2 seconds then. Google it.
wow, seriously? noone can get any help any more. everyone is just such a **** these days.
anyways, you need a data plan to root ur phone. you personally don't need it, but get a friend that has a data plan and use his SIM card for the procedure. and i'm sure there are some apps that force all data to be stopped and only allow wifi. i know my hero rom has an option to disable all data except for wifi built right in. i used hero_over. but i'm sure all hero roms have that option.

Your method is probably the most "common-sense" idea. We're not being dicks, we're just sick and tired of people not searching before posting, there's about millions of pages on google on the topic but they insist on coming here anyways. He can register through wifi with adb which most people do, so this pretty much contradicts the word "need" in your first statement. I won't carry on because I don't need to because I'd be a "****".

in anycase you're wrong, I haven't seen a question asking if you can root a phone without a data plan and a data block put on your phone.. keyword: DATA BLOCK... yes I am not an idiot.. I do search, why do alot of you seniors post on Q&A with "search please" ... just to get your post count up? Seems pretty regressive on helping people in a questions section.
Thanks to the other poster XD, but isn't there an option to get around it by entering in wifi to supplement the loss of a data plan and the addition of a data block?
Yes you can use no data plan too:

But when you really think about it, what's the point of having a Dream if you don't have a data plan? The majority of what the phone does involves intensive data plan usage, and I don't know about anybody else, but I actually use my device other than sitting at my computer.
Just my two cents.

Do you know any others that I can use to root WITHOUT flashing anything (because I do not want to trip the KNOX warranty void flag).
Thanks.

I dont know what I'm doing wrong .. I followed all instructions and still get the error "prevention notification" "an app is force closed because of an unauthorized attempt to access system" comes up every time I try to (unsuccessfully) use kingo to root. Kingo fail with Root FAILED ScriptError

On another forum, I find many times that when someone asks a question I don't know the answer to, a Google search brings up a good answer as the very first hit. And it takes longer to post a question than it does to do a Google lookup.
It's not laziness, it's lack of knowledge. The majority of the public is totally clueless when it comes to computers, even to using them for everyday tasks - like googling something. Laziness is a post titled GPS, with the body saying "doesn't work". Then they get angry because we tell them we need more information. (Many people have responded along the lines of "how do you keep this job when you don't know anything?" Job? When can I expect my first pay check?)

Yeah it does seem like that.
As for lazy, there are multiple forms. They must know Google or they wouldn't be At this site unless someone directed them here then if that was the case that person probably could have just helped. But for myself I tend to look up and see what's going on at least daily if not more frequent. And if I don't google/search I'll at least scroll through the first couple of pages at the topic to see if one matches or similar. When it comes to rom questions I read that entire thread and then ask unless it is a crazy busy post then I'll use the search. Too many times I see repetitive posts and I can see how so many get agrivated, specially when that exact same question was asked and answered on the page or 2 prior. That right there is another example of lazy.
And yes I agree that it has a lot to do with a lack of knowledge but I would not say lazy isn't a party of it

The post with the info from the dev starts out with how to then there are at least 20 pages of stuff to sift through to determine what issues people are having and what not with the processes.
So It might be easy for the veterans however for the noob it isnt quite so clear.

They are modding the build.prop or using Xposed modules to do it. Just like you would have to do if you had root any other way. The mod to the build.prop has to be done on the pre-rooted system.img and then flashed. Same with Xposed - it has to be installed in the pre-rooted system.img.
Search for the threads on this.

Thank you for taking the time to offer a more detailed explanation, I don't feel comfortable at this point with this $20 root, not because of the money but because I feel there is a good chance I will mess up my phone and when I ask for help I will be told to use the "search" feature. I am an expert in other areas where I am a member of other forums where I help others, if I know the answer to the question I give the person seeking help a complete answer, if I don't know: I say nothing. Telling somebody who is seeking help to "do a search" is not any help at all, just simply an unfriendly way of saying I know something you don't. I am not referring to you.

These are the basic rules of these forums. Your posting this question in the wrong section. You would get a better response in Q&A where such questions belong. I can't live without free WiFi tether on my UDP line so for me it is a big deal. These cell phones are not just telephones anymore - I use it to connect to the internet to do everything from pay my bills to communicate with clients via email and getting other work done on my computer while outside of my office/home. It allows me not to have to be stuck inside at a desk all the work day. The freedom and flexibility a smartphone with WiFi tether gives me is invaluable to me.
Right now I have an N6 but it is too big and the screen has an issue so I think I am sending it back. Would love for this root method to work on my Moto X 2014, which is my favorite p hone.

Well "NO" I wasn't trying to come off saying I know something you don't, I honestly feel that this thread was completely unnecessary because you could have done some reading in multiple threads on how to get wifi-tether for free. And you've been a member since 2011 so I figured you already knew about the search button. I was so tempted to just not even answer the question and tell you to do a simple search, but I had the common decency to answer it at least. To be fair, I did come off a little brash, so I will apologize for that, but threads like these annoy the crap out of me. Whenever I have a question or issue, I do my own research in order to find the solution, and only then if I don't find the answer to that question will I start a thread on the matter. So I will direct you to a very nice thread which will help you a little bit better in forum etiquette.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=36880289
Pay attention to number 4, 5, and 6 on the guide as they are the most applicable to you.
I'll do my best to help you now, but please next time just simply read through a couple pages and search; most of the answers are usually already available.
Honestly, this is one of the easier rooting methods I've done next to "towelroot". This is easier than using Odin with my old galaxy s3 and s4, in my opinion. It's certainly a heck of a lot easier than using the old school "paper clip method" in the HTC Rezound, LMAO. Anyone that has done it knows what I'm talking about. Actually, that was my favorite method of obtaining s-off. It took unlock the bootloader to a whole new level. A pretty interactive method. Anyways, I digress.
Just follow the instructions on the video exactly as Tom says and you will be perfectly fine. Once you get to the part where you are actually rooting the phone with the image, DO NOT TOUCH your phone, cable, or turn off the laptop or then you will be in trouble. The only difference you need is to download an IMG with wifitether already built into the app, because unfortunately, this method does not have Write Protection off (as of right now), this pretty much means you cannot make any changes to the code on your phone after flashing the image. So that means you don't get all the fancy stuff that you normally get with root unless you make the changes PRIOR to flashing. I know this is a lot to absorb, but it's good to know.
So with that being said, once you have purchased the rooting method, download the image off this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/dro...xt1254-21-44-12-quarkrootwifihotspot-t3064908 and unzip, then drag it into the box like you would in the video and everything should go smoothly. Once completed, you will have native wifi tethering on your phone so all you have to do is go to Settings>More...>Tethering & Mobile Hotspot and you're all set.
If you have any other questions, please go to the correct threads and/or use the search button.
Alright, I got tired of reading the somewhat nasty unhelpful comments so I'll chime in. Yes you can have Wifi hotspot with this root. I'm on a weird unadvertised Verizon plan. I have 6gb of data but wifi tethering still costs extra. Total bull****.
If you use the image someone on here made that has xposed working on it then you can download a module for xposed called Moto Tether, or maybe its called X Tether. Either way once exposed is up and running you can download and install that module, reboot and viola, the built in wifi tether works perfectly.
The other way that I'm aware of requires someone to modify the build.prop file from the system image, then repack that image which you can then flash. I don't know if anyone has done that yet though.
So I hope that answers your question.
If you don't already know why tethering doesn't work, and this is just from what I understand which may very well be wrong- when you go to use the wifi tethering it checks the build.prop file for permission which then uses the entitlement apk built into the phone to check your verizon account to see if you're subscribed to the feature with verizon. For people like me or those with unlimited data that feature costs more so unless your paying for it the entitlement app says no you don't have permission to use the feature.
I spent hours searching all over the damn web to piece that much together. Hope it helps.

Well This was simple math for me. I logged into my Verizon account and cancelled the tether at 30.00 per month. Paid 20 dollars for this. used the .IMG with the tether fix included. I did watch some of the youtube video to get me going. I also read through the good posts and the bad ones. Now I profit and if only for 1 month I come out ahead. I am still on a old Alltell plan and they always give me a hard time about switching to something else. I only used about 6-8 gigs a month anyways, but I want to use it the way I want.
Thanks to all.

I just used MOFO root to root my droid turbo, i actually had to do it twice, but it didnt take long once i had all the files downloaded. I used rootjunky you tube page and followed his instructions.
Now for your original question i am searching for an image that frees the wifi hotspot but i havent been able to locate it yet. If i find it i will let you know.

All of the rooted images available in the development section of the droid turbo forums have tethering enabled. Computerfreek's rom has it, and first encounter's rom includes it as part of the optional patch.

the one on root junky
No one shouts "Give Update!" No one asks "unlock bootloader". No one asks root. maiko1 and jcase not interested in these issues ... So, I can use TURBO for cracking nuts? What about those who have upgraded to 5.1? I did this in order to make the method Unbrick to 5.1 and now I'm left the fool ... But I'm not the only one! I think people would pay for MOFO ROOT and UNLOCK.
I apologize for such a harsh tone, but very disappointing ... :crying:

AFAIK, maiko1 is working on trying to find an option to root 5.1. Root Junky was the one who implied that so I believe it.
But there are no guarantees that he can find one. Unfortunately, the bootloader on Motorola phones is getting tougher and tougher to hack. That is actually a good thing for your average user and especially for the business users.
We are a small minority of users - most Android users don't even know what a bootloader is and most want their phones to be secure and not easily hacked. We want the opposite but we are a niche market.
And jcase has repeatedly said he doesn't like people asking him for ETAs and bothering him to crack devices he isn't interested in. So there is no sense in bothering jcase about this - he is well aware of the fact that many of us would love for him to put some effort into hacking Motorola devices but he prefers to stick to the HTC devices.

I hope that the way it is! I now have hands tied and I can not do anything. And I practically one on a 4PDA.ru doing custom for TURBO.

I feel for you but in the future, please do not take OTAs unless you know there is a root method for the newer firmware or unless you are OK with doing without root.
I was the one who tested mofo on 5.0 for the first time so I knew I was taking a risk that if I upgraded to 5.0 it may not work. But I was OK with that because I was prepared to move on to the Nexus 6 if it didn't work. It ended up working so I stayed with my Moto X 2014.
I didn't know that everything will be so bad.

Motorola phones have notoriously hard to crack bootloaders. We are lucky we even had mofo. Hopefully maiko1 can come through for us again.
I believe this is the point in phone technology that separates the men from the boys so to speak.... The true genius from the spelling bee champion.... If this doesn't apply to you don't wear it.. But thankful to alls hard work from previous roms cracks hacks toodles!

Wasn't mofo a zero-day exploit? That's like catching lightning in a bottle twice.

Mofo exploits the last build of KK. I think it was the third or fourth update.

What do you mean by zero-day? If you mean that motorola was unaware of it, well all exploits are zero-day exploits then. I don't think they would release phones if they knew there were vulnerabilities.

MoFo also worked on 5.0 and 5.0.2 bootloaders. Just not on 5.1.
I Kept telling everyone that we had a way to get 5.1 on the turbo and not to take the OTA. But I get it you where the kid in the candy store and just needed your lollipop. Look in less than 48 hours I had a system.img rooted and ready to be flashed.
You can try and warranty your phone most of them they send out are not updated to lollipop.

Thanks for the offer, but I will hardly be able to use it. I live for some thousands of miles from the USA... I'll wait for MOFO 5.1. I hope that it will happen!

I'm trying that now. Actually not for that reason (my bluetooth isn't working), but I hope the replacement will still be 4.4.4 (highly chance since they cannot update those replacement that's already in the refurbished box )
