Best LTE signal on custom (4.4.2-4.4.3) roms!! - Motorola Atrix HD

I have been desperately searching for a kitkat ROM that doesn't have the slow LTE signal problem. I figured I should share my experience being as Im sure many people face this same issue. Some of you may not even notice the issue until you compare speedtest result from your rom in question to results from stock. I tested EVERY kitkat ROM I could get my hands on and it is a problem for a large amont of them, some worse than others. I tested each individually by using myth tools to completely return my phone to stock, record my signal strength and speed in various locations. Then I would root the device, unlock bootloader, flash philz touch, then flash the ROM in question. I always returned to stock between flashing ROMs and tested signal strength/speed again using stock. I simply did this to ensure nothing involving the modem or such could carry over from one ROM to the next. Believe me it was a very drawn out process:highfive:. Anyways, I'm not going to go into details about each ROMs speed/signal strength(pm me if you want to know about a certain ROM I don't have listed). I'm just going to pass on the three ROMs that placed at the top. Keep in mind speeds and signal strengths did vary slightly with these as well but are certainly to par with what LTE speed should be. The third best was GZR Validus v5.2. Good signal strength and LTE speeds ranged from around 17-23mbps. The second best was MOKEE (both 4.4.2 and 4.4.3 nightlies). The signal strength was SLIGHTLY stronger than Validus. The speeds were also close to Validus, however I was able to reach up to 24.5mbps. The BEST signal strength/speed was certainly LiquidSmooth 3.0. Its signal strength/speed was basically that of stock. The speed was around 27-35mbps but tended to stay at the higher end of those numbers. I hope this helps some of you out that are experiencing slow LTE and want to know which ROMs will fix this. Please keep in mind I did my best to control this test and make it as accurate as possible. However, there is so many variables out of my control that could play a part in signal strength and speed. So please don't base this as scientific fact, use it more as a guide line. Just wanted to add also that I could not find the official Liquid Smooth 3.0 used in the test in the atrix HD section here at XDA, I was only able to find a unofficial JB version. If your wanting the ROM and can't find it PM me and I'll pass on a link. I messaged the developers to see if I can post a share in our development section. We certainly need to make it available, IMO its the best ROM for the atrix HD PERIOD! It also works flawlessly with arrrghhhs anykernel.

The latest ota.

So there's no high speed Dev type that can extract the firmware so we can just install it through fastboot? The Atrix HD community is strange to me, no deodexed stock roms, no radios, firmware or anything, just custom ROMs...

Complaint won't help.
We already have RSD and lots of great roms.
Being grateful might be a better attitude.
And by the way we do have deodexed roms.
Do the search.

On CM11 M7 official coming from latest ota. YMMV of course.

That's a lot better than I EVER got with cm. Its still terrible speed for LTE though. That's more like H+ speed. I'm on LS v3.0 pulling 28-35, and always over 30 if I have more than 2 bars. Speed wasn't the only problem I had with CM and others. The longer the phone was on seemed like the signal got worse and worse. I wish I could just forget the signal and stick with CM because the M7 snapshot was very stable and I loved it, the signal just killed it for me. In all reality I don't really need anymore than 10mbps or so, I'm just OCD and know I can get 30mbps so I have to. Lol I'm sure some will agree with that statement.

Are those all the best versions I can get? I'm hoping to get something a little more smooth, maybe better on battery.
You could try the 5.08 radio instead, not seen anything to indicate that FRG33 is any better than FRF91 could try if you like.
I would root the phone and put CyanogenMod 6.0 on it and it will open up a whole new world to you. Word of caution: read, read, read and educate yourself before flashing ROM's, kernel or anything else. Also, unless you are very comfortable using adb...don't mess with your radio as screwing up is the only way to brick your phone. Good luck!

My phone is rooted, I'm not sure about installing cyanogen or about how to change kernels though, and someone told me Cyanogen had really bad battery life, which is something I really want to be good.
I went through two batteries yesterday. I wasn't running it hard or anything. I do have all the bells and whistles going though.
I'm sure there is a battery thread for CM6, I'll look and see what I can find.
Regardless of the battery life it would be hard to switch back.

If you have Amon_Ra's or Clockwork Recovery installed, just download CM6 and either Wildmonks or Pershoots oc'd/uv kernel and flash them thru recovery. First, back up your apps, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache & dalvik-cache, wipe battery stats, then flash CM6 then kernel then 08172010 Gapps and reboot!
There are lots of threads dedicated to walking you thru each step.
You could also flash ROMs other than CM6. Enomther's feedback suggests MUCH better battery life and smoother ROM.

i second that. Enom's rom is a must!
I've heard a lot about both of their Tom's but I don't actually know how they compare to eachother in terms of features and performance.
Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk
Nobody can tell you that objectively since there are no objective head-to-head comparisons using specific set-ups, but only those that users do for themselves . From user comparisons you can gain some of the info you're looking for. You should probably try them and decide for yourself.
To be fair I don't know a feature list of either Cyanogen or Enom. I went on the Cyan site and clicked features but it just shows a video.
I just want something with good battery life!
Honestly, the best battery life is found using a stock rom. FRF91 or FRG33. You won't be able to use any of the great features that you'll find in Enom or Cyan's roms.
Personally, I don't see any adverse affects on battery life with either. You just have to test them out for a day or two under normal conditions. It's not the instant answer you were looking for, but that's how we all know what rom's we prefer.
Isn't there just a plain old feature list to look at?
UV
If you like your current setup and just want better battery life you can flash a custom Under Volted kernel.
Many Rom threads have a list of features in the first or second post
I have always found Enom to be more stable and better battery. The current "stable" CM6 is no where near as stable as Enom's 2.11.x and the battery life of Enom is better, however, the most recent CM6 has some more features that Enom does not yet have, one of them being WPA2 Enterprise support.

[Q] Is there any way to stop my Note getting too hot!!

Hey, When I use my galaxy note with games or web browsing, it gets really hot, this is worrying. Im running Kingdroid notemainia v3.0 with Franco Kernel. I know that some combinations of roms and kernels can reduce the CPU heat. Any suggestions please?
Best solution is not to worry - it's quite normal.

Thats clever, So as the battery gets hotter and hotter the CPU slows down ? To prevent extreme overheating ?
Think I might give that a try ! Mine does get hot.........But i do abuse it !
With cpu this fast, battery which is big and a screen to match, do expect it to be cold?
How hot is hot for you?
Zapped through server hops to XDA forums
mine reached 57c 2 days ago ... it's summer here and this started to make me worry
can SetCPU work with rooted GB Note (no custom kernels just using Chainfire's Kernel) ?
So long as your rooted it will work, However Overclocking wont work unless the kernel supports it.
I recommend undervolting or changing modems.
I did both and it solved my problem of heating up. Now I can do anything, heat isn't a problem for me anymore.
Hope this helps someone, anyone and everyone

Changing modems is straight forward, however because not all devices are specifically built the same, undervolting is a matter of trial and error.
Are you rooted? Stock rom or custom rom?

Here you go mate, I take it that you know how to flash since you're on a custom rom.

You have a lot to choose from the list of modems. Trial and error, check which one delivers good performance yet battery friendly for you as it varies from place to place.
Hope this helps someone, anyone and everyone
Regarding undervolting, I'll leave that for now as it's more advanced and could cause damage if not done correctly.
Before proceeding with modem flash, please backup your efs folder or simply get an app from playstore to do it for you. If I remember correctly, it's call efs backup.
Hope this helps someone, anyone and everyone
Thanks bro, ill give it a shot

I too had the similar issue with the Galaxy Note. It is quite common while doing CPU/GPU intensive things such as gaming, rendering web pages, etc. I had called up Samsung recently regarding when i had recently got my Note and they responded by saying "Its noting to get too worried about as it is common for this model to get heated due to the fast processor and thin body"
Like I have mentioned earlier, I used to have the same issue. Changing my modem had helped it keep cool on hspa+ while still performing great. I also undervolted cpu and gpu to help save battery life, I never noticed the heat after that. I was surprised about this due to the fact that I hadn't underclocked the cpu. So I'm getting full performance and great battery life. Couldn't be more happier
Hope this helps someone, anyone and everyone

Sure mate, here you go
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1645202
There is no best modems, what it really depends on is the area you're in and which network you're with, through trial and error you have to find the one that best suits you. You may find some to perform extremely well whilst it's not battery friendly, some maybe to your likening where it would perform well whilst being battery friendly and last may perform poor whilst being extremely battery friendly.
There are some marked known to be good modems in the link I've provided, try them and if not your liking try the others on the list

Anyone try on Wind / Mobilicity yet?

This is probably a long shot since it's so early.
I've used AT&T / Rogers / Telus Notes on Wind and never get a download speed above 0.5mbps. It's unusable.
Was hoping TMobile's version would help
Is it just a software modem change? or are there actually hardware differences in the T879?
Thanks.

I am going to get my t-mobile galaxy note in a few days so I can report back how it works with Wind in Canada.
I've tried both. Wind is faster but only slightly. Both hit like 3 Mbps down and 1 up under perfect conditions, which is never. However we pay $25 for unlimited everything. Hard to complain. I find The VK1_test and jeet92's modems work best in burnaby and vancouver.

Can I get more details? So you're running the stock T879 rom? and T879 modem?
Not the AT&T modem? Anything custom? If so, can you try with a custom AT&T rom and T879 modem?
Finally, have you tried putting back a bell/rogers sim card to see what speeds you can still get on their network?

T-879 with Wind
I am using the T-879 from T-Mobile with Wind for almost a week know , this one replacing t-mobile Galaxy SII T-989.
Phone came with ICS 4.0.4 and baseband T879UVLG3.
The reception is much better than SII on Wind. Download speed is somewhere around 7 mbps down and 1.5 ~ 2 mbps up , again doing better than SII
I switched to Mibilicity from Wind, phone and modem same as user Alicklee, I am going to try it and see. So far, at home, not much of a diff except that voice quality is better. haven't tested data speeds yet. My Wind at work was really bad, actually zero reception so will see monday, a colleague is on Mobi and has 2-3 bars.
Waiting for newer/better modem than the one from post #2 of the OP.

Stock vs cm10.1

Hi guys, was wondering about what makes you decide to leave stock and stick to cm, or why you're staying in stock rather than cm10.1?
I've been thinking which ROM to go for, thinking about the cons and pros for each..
for stock, great kernel support from doomlord, better cam( i think ? ), more mods available( better sound from zeroinfinity).
for cm10.1, loads of customization, super smooth( carbon rom for now ).
What additional feature else to add?
Please list down what ROM you're using + the reason why you're sticking with ( stock / cm10.1 ) ? Would like to see different users' opinion.
If u want to preserve warranty, go for stock
If you want performance and daily updates , go for cm 10.1
If you wanna customise your device to d core, go for miui v5.
Aosp, paranoid android and pacman roms are also worth it

Actually, there is a noticeable drop in performance while running CM10.1 vs stock. Whether this is related to the build I'm running being a debug build vs release/optimised or if there's a more efficient graphics driver in stock ROMs I don't know, but I get 5600 in Quadrant running CM10.1 vs roughly 7800 in stock. Pretty large difference.
The most likely reason for this is what I mentioned above, that a debug build is not at all as optimised (as that takes a lot more time for compilation) as stable builds. But still worth mentioning as one is most likely to be running userdebug nightlies at this stage. If this is the case then we will most likely see improved results when the CM10.1 stable gets the new FXP kernel that's been pushed to the nightly builds.

if you flash the wrong model like a GSM on a sprint phone yes it will cause problems. stick to the proper documented roms in this section and you should be fine. Im running CM 10.2 with no problems

This build fixed the lte connection issue for me! Glad to see you made your own thread too. You should point out that it has working ir blaster in the title though.

Did you have to do anything special to get it to work or did it just work out of the box?

I've had my one for 3 months now (came from an S3) and I've been dying to run CM on it. But I remember reading that aosp roms aside from GE where bricking some phones, I really want to try this and was wondering if this is still an issue.

Just check your cpu frequency after you boot and sign in. Sometimes the low frequency locks at max and burns up the cpu. Just set It to its lowest and you wont kill your phone.

Never mind it was my phone.
Good to see your'e up and running publicly and not in General anymore. Great work! Keep it up! :highfive:
Hmmm... must have been a glitch in the matrix...
Quick question. The last several nightlies from cm I have seemed to have a muted tone on phone calls Luke people having trouble hearing me. When I flash back to sense base roms, no issues. Anyone have any of the same type issues here?
It Werks!
Xposed frameworks, Modoco toolkit and a little build.prop editing needed.
