[Q] Admitted defeat, help required - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello folks.
Had a go at rooting Samsung i9000. It's quite old, and clearly clogged up to the hilt with the apps very laggy and frequently crashing. I quite fancied getting rid of the bloatwear too and the bloody annoying splash screen at start up!
Needless to say, it's all gone belly up. I've tried a couple of things using the guides here, but I don't want to keep pushing my luck in case I completely brick the device.
I'm running an i9000 in the UK on the o2 (Well, giffgaff) network. It was running Gingerbread, 2.3.5 I think. As it stands, I can get into the download option, but nothing else. I had used Odin 3, but have since read that the highest level is 1.83, which I now have. This might have caused the initial problem, but it's "soft" bricked. I've tried to flash over a stock rom again, but I keep getting failure notices. I can't get past the "Can't open the serial (COM) port" error message on Odin. I've downloaded the drivers and they have successfully installed.
One thing I don't think I did beforehand was to enable USB debugging.
I also tried the guide on here which uses the pit method, and curiously enough, it went through without the COM port error. The only thing that did, however, was to remove the "Phone + PC" logo. I am still able to get into download though.
Help! I am due to get a new phone very shortly, but it would be very useful to get the phone working again in the meantime! Any help very much appreciated.

If Kies is running in background it will fail, Go into Kies, Tools -> Preferences, unselect "Run Samsung Kies automatically when a device is connected", save the change, close out of Kies, and then restart ODIN. Try flashing now.

Try uninstalling Kies and then reboot and install the Samsung Drivers. Try then.
PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFTTT, sent from my i9000

Connecting SGS to Kies - MTP error - fix

Before you wipe any data or factory reset etc, you may want to try the following.
I know there are many solutions offered around the internet for this horrendous problem - if you are one of those poor people, like me, that get the constant trying to connect message, the MTP error message or if kies can read your phone and you get the 'can't update device' error - then hopefully this solution will help.
I myself have tried everything for many, many months. Downloading the new Kies software, uninstalling, reinstalling it, getting the latest USB drivers (both manually and using Kies), phoning Samsung, going to their Service Centre - all to no avail.
My phone was originally on Orange and I unlocked it to O2. This solution worked for me. And, best of all, you don't have to reboot, factory reset or wipe any data! Joy!
All you need to do is download a very simple utility software developed by one of the wonderful guys over on AndroidForums (I'm unable to post link, due to being a new member, but head over to Android Forums and search 'solution/tutorial galaxy s i9000 mtp application crashing html (will show thread title in bold, click on this) then scroll down a little way and look for the FileSearcherforKiesFix.zip file.
Once you have this utility, connect your SGS to computer via the usb cable, using mass storage mode. Run the utility and find the drive on the computer for the phone - it will search for files with characters of 16 or more. Once you find any go into the computer, find corresponding drive for the phone on the computer and delete this file. Run the application again to double check.
Now I will say that it is a good idea to take out any external memory cards before you run the utility and just have the phone drive to search.
Once you've done this, put phone back into kies mode and run Kies. If it doesn't connect up, do the above again; put phone into mass storage mode and run utility again. Sometimes files show up again after disconnecting and re-connecting. I found a total of four files, that's all! Make sure you definately delete them.
When you have done this, connect to Kies, again in Kies mode, and your phone should be recognised. You will then get offered any firmware updates.
Good luck - hope this works for you. Let me know.
So simple (took me 6 months to find this too!).
I will finish by saying that although my firmware updated, it was to a more recent 2.1 eclair version, as it seems apparently, Orange have not 'officially' released 2.2 for their phones as yet; have heard end of January!! What???!!
So patience patience patience!!
Good luck people.
Any questions please ask.
i have tride this for many times but still not working. i want to smash my phone

[Q] Updating Galaxy S Captivate to Froyo 2.2

I'm very sorry for creating a thread like this one, I do not want to be annoying.
This last week, Rogers change my Acer Liquid E for a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate for very bad customer experience.
Since my Acer Liquid E was on Froyo, my Captivate is on Eclair and i'd like to update it.
Samsung Galaxy S Captivate : SGH-i896 (Rogers Canada)
Everything I've found didn't work at all.
I'm Using Kies 1.5.3.10113_29
USB Driver are installed (Samsung)
Proper USB Cable and I follow the instruction step by step on both rogers and samsung website.
Here's go the problem:
(Sorry for my bad english, I'm used to speak french)
When I start Kies, my phone is trying to be detected by Kies but it endless. It said : Connecting the device, please wait. This last step never end (2 hours waiting in front of the computer).
I've been factory reset my phone, reinstalling usb driver and kies and I don't know what to do. I'd like to know if there's someone that could help me ? I've been searching for two days for a miracle, this forum seems to be most competent way to get a result.
I'll be very happy if there's someone that could help me.
Thank you!
Marc
P.S: In my computer Windows, my computer show my mobile name by SGH-i896 and i can acces to by phone like it was mass storage mode.

Have you checked your USB settings? Go into settings -> applications -> development -> make sure USB debugging is turned off. Then go back to applications -> USB settings -> select Kies (Firmware update). I haven't used Kies at all but in theory this should fix your problem.
Yes I did, is there an other way to update me phone ?
My kies would always do this too. I was able to fix by going into control panel, then device manager and deleting the device named something like "samsung android composite device" (phone has to be connected to see this). Then unplug the phone and reconnect and it would install the drivers again.
I had to do this fairly often, but it always worked. hopefully it might work for you.

This my works, but i'de like to know what driver were you using when he asked you to install it the second time ? I'm using the driver for SGH-I897, i didn't find anything for the SGH-I896
i had a lot of problems with kies doing the update to froyo 2.2 too...
first check if your usb settings are going to Kies mode and not mass storage mode. you can check my going to settings > applications > USB settings > Kies (firmware update)
if you are a rogers customer then try to bring it to a Rogers Plus store and ask them to update it for you, might have to try a few stores before you find a someone that can help.
if you want to do the update yourself then you can try this.
i first had to install an older version of kies, the latest one from samsung website would not detect my phone at all. the version i used is Kies_1.5.3.10092_2_1.exe, you can download it here http://dls.scione-music.de/KIES/
another problem i had was that during the update kies was not able to put my phone in download mode so i would get an error and the firmware update would close. what i had to do was manually put it in download mode before i get the error. so before the error pops up you have to power off your phone and disconnect the usb then while the phone is off hold both volume buttons and plug in the usb. This will put you into download mode and then kies will finish the update.
The problem has been solved by switching my windows vista to windows 7! ! I finnaly managed to convince my girlfriend to switch his ****ty pc operating system to 7. Thank you for everything all xda user.

I am on rogers froyo 2.2. There are some other ways than kies. You can flash the stock rom here (cwm or odin): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905042
or flash any one of these custom roms based on it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=912657
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914284
If you are new and don't know how to flash, then read a lot before trying (try stickies in the android dev section and general section).
Edit: didn't see above post. Looks like you got it solved.

[Q] How to upgrade i957 to ICS safely?

Contrary to what AT&T claimed, my newly acquired i957 will not upgrade to ICS over the air. I have tried to use Kies to do so, but Kies gets stuck at "Downloading firmware components 100%", and eventually just quits. I could try Odin, but first I'd have to learn how to use it, and in any case I see the warning in one thread that it may disable my touch screen. Disassembling and re-assembling my i957 in order to fix the touch screen is not a realistic option.
Does anyone know how to get Kies to complete the ICS update to the i957? Or is there a way to make sure that Odin does so properly without goofing up the touch screen?
The above used a Windows XP computer. Windows 7 did the same thing, but here Kies displayed a message that it needed to be run as administrator. I tried that, and the procedure has gotten farther. It appears to be actually loading the firmware into the i957. We shall see.
The operation appears to have been successful.
By the way, the other bizarre glitch was that Kies would not even install--it was stuck at "Quick fix"--until I lowered the security of Java to medium.
this is why i dont use kies

Bricked my AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 Active i537. Advice?

I attempted going to my recovery mode and found a message saying "System software not authorized by AT&T has been detected on your phone." When you pay attention to the top left of Odin mode when you attempt to install, two red text lines appear. The first being "START [224, 1440]" and the next being "SECURE CHECK FAIL : recovery" I assume this is because AT&T detected something that was not supposed to be there.
The reason I believe AT&T detected something was because I attempted to flash a rom for Android 4.4.2 (Lollipop) using Droidviews tutorial (sorry, new user so I can't post the link :/) among others. This was with root access, which may have tripped the bootloader as well. I believe I was supposed to install a custom bootloader like TWRP or CWM beforehand (and I tried getting TWRP but it did not seem possible with AT&T's bootloader so I figured I may as well try it without and afterwards it would be easier); however, I never read any instructions in any of the websites I have used to root/update my phone that say I must have it so I am skeptical. Any guesses on how to fix it?
I also tried to flash the stock rom via Odin. Maybe it didn't have the "official" AT&T signature on it because I got the same error, but I looked anywhere I thought there may be a stock rom that would work. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Well that certainly helped, I never knew someone created an Odin exe for the stock rom. It seemed to be working up until the end but for some reason it stopped (I forgot to log why as I am still a newb at this; I think it tripped my recovery mode again). I rebooted it and an error appeared saying "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again." This seemed simple enough until Kies just would not connect to my phone. I left it for about 10 minutes until an error appeared saying that my device is not responding. It told me to reboot it and try again, so that's what I did. It seems to be doing the same thing regardless. I tried troubleshooting a connection error and it reinstalled the Kies drivers (I did this countless times), but the same thing kept happening.

The one click seems to work well, but it never finishes completely. I cannot flash an OTA file as my bootloader is inaccessible. I may be able to do so from my computer but I have found no programs or guides to. Also, almost all of the downloads are down or outdated on the sticky with the exception of the ones I can't use.
Found the proper files to flash my phone successfully, the stickies were all outdated.

SM-N9208 Duos China Phone (Cloned) Need help!

Hello! I am currently new here and a newbie when comes to this stuff. Anyway, to get to my point, my cousin gave me an SM-N9208 Duos but it was a China phone and he said that it was a cloned phone. I still accepted it though but when I was attempting to use it, I noticed that it had a lot of issues and pop-up messages which annoyed me. When I asked him what he had done to the phone before handing it to me, he said that the phone had a lot of viruses and malwares. I attempt to hard reset it through recovery mode and through the phone system itself but it was no use, it still goes through the same window "Unfortunately, CPS has stopped" on both hard reset attempts. It also keep installing apps that has korean or chinese women on the icons. It keeps spamming any app installations when I connect it with my WIFI connection.
Also, any other issues was that when I attempt to flash the stock rom of it using ODIN3_v3.10.7, it doesn't recognize the device, I also attempt it to connect the device as USB storage and I can still read the device using adb devices from CMD and but still no go with ODIN3. I even attempted having the device go through recovery mode but still no go too. I attempt to install Malwarebytes app but it doesn't ready any viruses or malware on the device.
Just to let you guys know also that when I attempt to do the download mode, it just shows 3 options, recovery, fast boot and normal boot.
This is kind of sucks to my end and I really need help with it. I will really appreciate it if anyone can help me on this.
