[Q] Excessive data drain by the People Hub - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I don't know where to ask this, asked on few places but didn't got answer.
Here is my problem: I'm using Lumia 520 with WP 8.1 Developer Preview. I'm experiencing huge amount of data usage by People app (hub). I have Outlook, Nokia and Google accounts added. Outlook set to download new content as arrive and Google account set to manually get new content. I get few mails every day on Outlook and not even check Gmail, but it keeps using my data, last two weeks it used 70 Mb for 2 days, then next week 68 in two days. Nothing changed for few days, I didn't changed settings for that app, and sudenly 2 days ago it spent 43MB of that when phone was idle, just for People app. Today, it is 84MB for People app, I've set data limit and turned off background data for all apps, even then it managed to spend few MB. I'm on limited data plan, and this is frustrating for me, it spends more than half of my data useless. When I connect phone to wifi, nothing happens, it spent 1MB on wifi on people app.. Help me, what to do to stop this?
Thanks!

SEVEN push email- save battery?

I just downloaded SEVEN beta to try push emails to save battery since I have 6 accts to check. but I notice that its constantly connected to the net and that it takes about 5 minutes to receive emails. so if it takes 5 mins to receive and constantly connect to the net, I it really saving battery?
or did I do something wrong? with my regular email setup, I have it checking evey 30 minutes but kaisertweak will shut off the connection after 2 mins of no use.
should I go back?
I got my gmail mail+calander synced with my phone. Every 1 hour, on 3G.
With use of my mobile from 07:00 till like 20:00 my battery is around 70%. So i't ain't that bad just using Active Sync to sync with mailserver.
I am also find it's ok using Seven. Not much battery drainage.

What do you use for mail? I tried SEVEN briefly, but it didn't disconnect so I stopped using it.
What's the best app for checking emails every 4 or so hours that automatically disconnects right after it receives it?
Not quite answering your question, but I use this application http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=501254 - I only need to check my new emails when I'm available to check my phone! So it works for me. Auto discon of data connection isn't built into the app (yet) but you can configure via either advance config or Kaisertweak - I forget which one to do so on sleep.
Uses the least battery possible then.....
Edit - I map the exe to long press of hardware button using AEButtons
I have been using Seven for a few weeks now and I am extremely happy with it. My emails are almost instant and I have 5 email accounts setup.
The battery life so far has been excellent, I am using a Touch Pro 2 and I can go the whole day with direct push with absolutely no problem. It integrates with the HTC interface wonderfully, I am honestly very impressed with this software and it exceeded my expectations for easy of use, functionality, and battey life.
Yes, I love Seven. I am using it for 1 year and it works so well. Just one problem you should aware of is that everytime you setup a new email account, it sends 1 sms to England. You can avoid that with some tricks. I posted this earlier here.

[APP] Seven - very fast e-mail pushing service

So i was just introduced to this program the other day. It works great, i get my e-mails on my phone just a few seconds later. It doesn't seem to lower my battery life much at all, and it was very easy to setup.
http://community.seven.com/main.php
register and download the beta. I've been using this for about 3 days and i've gotten about 50 e-mails through this service and i always check the times and it's never more than a minute later.
I would like to get a consensus about how well this works for others. I'm using Gmail and it forwards very fast.
UPDATE: Just wanted to add, do not install this if you have XpressMail installed on your device as they use some of the same files they both will become unusable.
before i try
how does it work?
is it constantly connected to data? or does it send as a text or what?
i knew i forgot something, i've got my Touch pro on a constant Edge connection with constant data enabled. I'm not 100% positive the data connection is needed but i think you do. Other Idle Imap apps, i've tried needed constant connection.
I've been using this for a while now and it does require a constant connection, but it is a lot less power hungry than other push solutions or even the native POP / IMAP connections. Seven basically creates e-mail accounts within the native messaging application, so there's no need to have an additional application. It allows you to setup multiple e-mail accounts to be pushed, including Google Apps.
And for those of us that change roms regularly, Seven saves your account information (sans passwords) so that you don't have to start from scratch everytime you flash a new rom.
One thing to note is that Seven is essentially in permanent beta, so there will be times when it goes down for upgrades, maintenance or bugs. But that doesn't happen very often and they are usually pretty good about communicating what is going on and when to expect a solution.
Been using this for a year and it's the best! Woohoo! I love this!
I tried emoze, pushconsilient, and web2mail. I like "SEVEN" out of all of them. I get my email on my phone before my outlook does on my pc.
Thanks!!
It's really COOL and i can now check the gmail and even the company mail (OWA)!
Very nice!!
does it do "better"then Emoze?
I use Emoze now for a year and i have no problem.
Does it use less more power?
i've just tested, but i like Emoze more then Seven.
Emoze connects een fast as seven, but now i get also mine appointpents ect. synced.
So i keep it with emoze.
Seven is the dev company that supplies AT&T with Good Mobile Messaging and such. They sell the product (serverside) to the Cell carriers, who inturn rebrand it and "sell/offer" the service to the carrier's susbcribers.
I have been using it for 3 years for multiple accounts... no more desktop redirectors.
It currently uses a data connection, but in the future it will work via SMS triggers
gr8 share thank you
A few days ago, I started using it for both my Gmail and my company mail (via OWA).
At first, it took a few minutes for new mail to show up in either. Now, I'm finding that new messages in my gmail are showing up almost instantly (under a minute at least), but work messages are taking between 5-15 minutes (I can confirm via the desktop that they are indeed in the inbox).
Anyone else see this sort of delay?
is this based on Exchange 2007 aka HTML emails? Doesn't seem to let me into the FAQ's before creating an account...
I use this service and i love it.
i'm glad to see so many people who support and use this App, and those of you who don't use it i recommend it.
I tried it for 2 days, I love it... However, since it used data constantsly, it heats up my device badly... so I uninstalled it.
Thanks for the share thou.
goes this get around the gmail issue where sent messages also appear as new unread emails?

Seven does not have this problem. Additionally, the sent messages get saved in your sent folder on gmail.

Do you keep HSDPA going? I keep it on an EDGE connection and i don't get much heat at all.
It's a shakey time for anyone who sees this thread to try it out, though. They did some sort of heavy maintenance Monday, and although their status updates say everything's back, I'm not sure it is. I'm seeing big delays in getting my gmail via imap through them. I suspect it will be worked out soon, though.

Data Usage - Rough Guide

Hi folks, I am looking at a driod to replace my WM6.5 unit and up till now I have managed to avoid using anything that needed data, reason... I live in Australia and the telcos know how to charge for data like it was gold.
But as a LOT of the new apps and services require data then I have to look at the plans and make a stab based on expected monthly data usage...
I know, I know, how long is the piece of string......
What I am asking is can people give me a rough estimate of monthly data usage on any network with any apps enabled, I reckon with good and bad I can figure out what may be feasible for my selection.
email usage is light, web next to nothing (for now) and not sure about other services, I have wifi at home so would attempt updates and stuff there rather than OTA
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Hey
Well, not sure of my exact data usage, but it would be sure to increase 10 fold (it did for me at least coming from a blackberry). There is so much stuff that can be gained through apps that use data. Maybe you could tell us the various price ranges for the data plans and decide that way?
Aldo there are tons of apps that will monitor your data and give you alerts and such so the fear or unintentionnaly going over is slim.
Hope this helps.

Thats the problem from my end, none of the telcos are helpful as such, they range from 200mb to 1gb but are ALL different in price, so one charges x for 200mb on y cap and another is double for the same 200mb but a different cap
So what I needed was someone to say what they do on an average month, 2mb, 20mb, 784mb, 3.2gb etc etc, this way i can figure out the cort/benefit ratio of cap/plan v's qouta and extras
It seems to me that many apps I use give my flexibility in this area. The main apps I use that download data are configurable of how often to check for updates. For example, I can set my weather widget to download new info anywhere from every 15 min to every couple hours. Also, syncing with gmail and other google services can be turned on and off so you could only have it on when on wifi. Twitter and Facebook apps also have settings to change how often you have them refresh the data. So if you don't use too many apps or just set all of them to only update manually you can limit your data usage by a lot.
OK, can I just ask people to actualy state
HOW MUCH DATA YOU USE PER MONTH
Thank you.
my first month, i have no idea how but i used 3.3gb.
every month after that has been around just under 1gb, except last month when i had to tether my laptop because my home internet was out for a week, the data for that month showed 1.2gb.
I have two widgets, facebook and twitter that sync about every 2-4 hours, i adjust them some times to sync less and i manually sync them if i want to read and am bored. I have newsrob which syncs my google reader articles, sometimes i have that sync every 4 hours sometimes fully manual. I have background data turned on almost all the time and gps turned on always updating my location with latitude, i have gmail and an exchange account syncing for work using ssl. i have last.fm scrobbling all the music i listen to and stream music with it occasionally, not all the time. i browse the web on it quite abit whiel sitting at home and watching movies with the girlfriend as well as look up random facts and other things i come across day to day.
let me know if you need any other input!
I use on average somewhere between 900mb and 1.2gb
Thats streaming Pandora most of the time I'm in my car, using GPS maybe 2-3 times a week and pretty heavy data usage in other ways (i.e web surfing and apps)
I don't do much tethering or downloading of large files. I have tethered a few times but nothing that I would call average.
I used to use about ~2 GB when just using it for Pandora, hulu, and browsing. Now I'm at around 7 GB since I tether.
For comparison, I used 65mb on my bb bold 9000 and now 1gb on my n1. Mostly because its so fast! I do not really stream. I only browse, email, chat and some videos. Its a lot of usage from just browsing
before froyo i ran about 1-1.5 gb a month, now ive tethered a lot and started listening to more music so im up to about 4 gb

billing cycle: 7/20 - 8/19
data used: 36Mb
txt (sms to you non american types ): 16
minutes: 13
what I'm using that is data intensive:
google maps- hourly, with two 2 hour driving trips using it
gmail - it pushes all emails
email - check every 15 minutes, two additional accounts
maverick pro - uses gps and data
pandora - no usage this cycle, i usally stream at work, and i'm on vacation this week
normally, if i use pandora, it's for 4-6 hours per day, at roughly 1Mb / 15 mintues
there, hopefully you'll have an idea what a typical nexus user will burn through in a billing period.
I have a 500mb plan, and to date (over a year) I've only come close to that once.
I have Twitter refreshing every 10 minutes, GMail push, Email every 15, and Facebook every 30. Plus some web browsing (of relatively light sites). No video or audio streaming.
On average I'm around 250mb a month now, because we have no wifi at work. When I was in school (wifi on campus, and at home), I never went over 100mb. Usually less than 50.
~600MB monthly.
It consists of me tethering the laptop on the way to work and back ~2 hours a day, mostly. When I didn't use it and just surfed for fun, I'd get ~150MB monthly. When I didn't surf at all, the data apps put me at ~40MB monthly. I'm using Gmail, Gtalk and several smaller-scale apps like Astrid.
THANK YOU THANK YOU to those that actualy posted figures, the plans over here are rather stringent and no way could you support some of the figures you have indicated without incurring signifiacnt costs, I now have an idea that data costs are a priority something I have to factor in to the overall package, and unless the telco has an unlimited plan I have to read the fine print for excess charges VERY clearly.
Thank you once again
I hovered around 7-11gb a month when I was on att wireless. Their footprints issue great in Miami. I swapped to T-Mobile and they suck. Its horrible. I hardly ever touch my phone now. And it shows! I now hover around 300mb-800mb

[Q] High Data Usage Problem (Tilt 2 on ATT)

Hey all, I did not have much luck using the search. Tried to find other people who have had this problem. **Plus nobody responded in the General forum so here I am again. **
We have 4 ATT Tilt 2 phones in my department. All with the same rom, radio, settings, etc. The difference in the phones is that 2 of them were purchased about a year earlier than the other 2.
*PROBLEM* TWO of the phones (the newer purchased Tilt 2's) we are getting alerts for high data usage from ATT. Looked at the ATT data logs, sure enough they have high data usage, large amounts at odd times. like 20mb - 100+mb transfers in the late night early morning, during the day. Not good, it is all adding up quick with no suspect in sight. The 2 users with this problem, use the phone data less than I do for day to day tasks and I am way under the alert limit, its not something they are causing---some of these data periods are while the user is ASLEEP (and no, we do NOT use MS myphone sync). Its got to be a phone software or software compatibility with the newer Tilt 2 hardware or something. I tried a couple different ROMS, same problem. Right now we are all on Energy.RHODIUM.21684.Sense2.5.Cookie.sencity.Nov.0 8
Radio: 4.49.25.77 (best signal in our area) Michigan
Please help. Thanks to anybody who can provide some guidance.
sounds like it is connecting for something and not disconnecting. I have this problem sometimes when it connects to download my email and weather, it will stay connected all night and kill my battery by the time i wake up.
TRY THIS, CREDITS TO THE GUY THAT HAD THE TIME TO PUT THIS TOGETHER, NOT ME
Enable Auto Data Disconnect for Auto Email Downloads and Other Downloads with a Cab File
When you have auto email downloads enabled, data is not disoconnected after mail retrieval and thus your battery is drained much faster. Modify the following reg edit to have data disconnect after 60 seconds. You can test this by tapping on the notfification bar while downloading emails and watch the data connection close after idle for 60 seconds. Please note. Data connection will NOT auto disconnect if you have any HTC Sense auto download enabled such as Weather, Twitter, Stocks, Facebook or Time Sync. Please set these apps to manual download only. Please note that this setting has the possible effect of disabling simultaneous voice and data on some devices, even if you are on a capable network and signal. See Tip 70 for an app that works with even HTC data downloads.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\ConnMgr\Planner\Settings
CacheTime = 60
SuspendResume = should be blank. Delete "GPRS_bye_if_device_off" text.
VPNCacheTime = 60
Finally An Auto Data Disconnection That Works - Save Battery Life!
Download the following cab file http://www.commmgrpro.com/CommMgrPro...witch.V2.8.cab
You can set it to disconnect data after 60 seconds or more or less thus saving you battery. Read the thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...ght=bandswitch
Tried and tested for over a 2 weeks on my HD2 and works perfectly. Use INSTEAD of Tip 33.
The only problem i have with this is that it kind of defeats the purpose of a smart/connected phone. Its just so strange that only 2 of the 4 phones have this high data use problem, and they were all setup by the same person.
But on the other hand, it would be a good test method for data usage before and after. THANK YA!

Have this exact same problem using the latest Simplicity rom. Nothing, not even the weather is set to auto update, and by and large I no longer even use the phone save for 2 or 3 phone calls a month. Yet, like clockwork, get data warnings.
I wonder if this has anything to do with it (SEEING THAT BOTH OF OUR USERS WITH THE PROBLEM WERE LINKED TO YAHOO MAIL ACCOUNTS! And not the rest of us)

That problem is not just on wp7 is happening on iphones too. so u better unlink those yahoo mail accoounts or put your setting for manual downlad.
I unlinked my Yahoo account and disabled auto update of Sense Weather, my data usage did go down, not that I care about it as I have unlimited, but was surprised at how much better battery life I now have.

[Q] Exchange client - push email - huge data

Hello!
I'm using Android Exchange client (on SGS with 2.3.3). But I have one problem - if I want to use Push email (our company Exchange mail server have a support) it works, but it creates a huge amount of data traffic (in 40 minutes cca. 1.7 MB - without getting any mail).
Synchronization is for two days and just for 2 kB emails, so this could not be a reason for such a traffic.
Any idea? Use another client?
Hi, I know this is a old post.
But did you find a elegant solution at all?
I have a SGS2 and for the life of me I cant figure out why push email is chewing so much data when I am only doing 2KB and like two weeks. It will happy chew 10MB of data a day without even getting new mail.
On my old windows phone WM6.5 I only had a 30MB data bundle for the month and that thing was on push the whole time. It maybe went through 10MB per month maybe at the most.
Presently the only way I am able to use my email now is by putting it on a schedule which is really not ideal. And then even with doing that the data use is still quite high.
I am now chewing 100MB a month and I am not data heavy at all (I have wifi at home). Everything I dont need is locked down with DriodWall as well.
I tried K9 Mail application, but that doesnt work with Exchange 2010.
Any other ideas?
Sorry - I didn't find a solution. At the moment I use AOKP (ICS 4.0.3) and I will try it now.
Until now, I use simple check on some minutes (if I need) or Manual (usually).
I will report after some minutes if my data plan becomes crazy ....
It looks promising. In half an hour it drains only 0.06 MB
I use SGS (the old one), ICS 4.0.3 (AOKP build 28), radio JVU and kernel Semaphore 0.9.7
Thanks man. Didnt get a email. Need to check my notification settings.
I will just have to see then what happens when I go to ICS.
My official release here should be out any day now.
Thanks again.
