Have you enabled developer options, and turned on USB Debugging?
Settings > About Phone scroll down to bottom. repeatedly tap on "build number" until it says "You're now a developer". Then back up to the previous menu (settings) and you'll see "Developer Options". Check the box by "USB debugging". Now try adb. The phone should prompt you to authorize the computer.

Volume down to scroll.
Up to select.

Ap fastboot & bootloader are now one screen, all in one. Older. Motos had 2 screens.
You need to have the phone connected to your PC and then you need to open a command prompt in order to input the commands.
If on Windows go to "Start" then in the search window type, "cmd" and a command prompt will open and you can put the command in for your phone.

There are two ways to get into the bootloader/fastboot menu...
Option 1:
power off, then press the power and volume down buttons simultaneously
Option 2:
If USB debugging option on your phone is turned on, and you have a properly setup ADB, AndroidSDK Platform tools, and moto drivers on your pc...
Open a command prompt and type...
adb reboot-bootloader
The phone will restart into the bootloader/fastboot menu.
That being said, the graphic says "downgrade to the 4.2.2 camera update" Hopefully that is just helping you ask your question. BUT If you are really trying to downgrade to the 4.2.2 w/camera update... BE WARNED!! IF YOU HAVE 4.4.2 already on your phone, do NOT DOWNGRADE THE ROM!!! doing so will either brick your phone now, or set you up for a brick should you try and take an OTA update in the future!!

Mark thanks, this is proving to be a little more difficult than the last phone my razr M that I rooted.. I simply hooked up the USB cable to the PC and phone enabled debugging on the phone and ran a few commands from Windows command prompt and that was it I didn't have ADB or the SDK kit installed on the PC at all just a Motorola drivers. so now I'm off to try to download the SDK and see if I can figure out how to do this I have 2 brand new Moto X with 4.4 not 4.4.2. the make your own moto X maker on Motorola's website is still shipping the new phones with 4.4
Not trying to offend....but one piece of advice. You started 3 threads to get to this point. It would've been easier to follow your issues and help if it was all in one thread.

The newer phones are getting harder and harder to root.
For the X with 4.4, use the SlapMyMoto thread, which also has a link to the MotoWpNoMo thread which you must use too (if you have a locked bootloader). Its not a simple process, BUT if you read (not skim), and completely follow the directions, you'll be able to do it.. then do NOT take the 4.4.2 OTA!!!!! if you want to stay rooted with write protection disabled.

I can NOT get ADB to recognize this phone in fastboot mode.

Please for the love of god help me. I've tried everything.
I have a developer edition. I have the newest drivers, the newest phone updates. Everything. It is recognized by ADB when I'm on the home screen, but when I am in fastboot mode itself it will not recognize the device. I can't unlock the BL because of this. It's VERY frustrating and I'm about 12 hours from selling this device and buying an HTC M8.
I have Windows 7 64 bit. I'm on the newest moto drivers, the newest FW for the X. I've uninstalled and re-installed and restarted my machine countless times. With no luck. With the drivers installed I booted the phone into fastboot mode, pulled up a command prompt where ADB was installed, ran adb devices and nothing. Over and over again. Please help me. I really want to keep this phone.
Navigate to where fastboot.exe is installed, and run "fastboot devices".
And make sure phone is in bootloader mode.
Does it list serial number?
I ran into the same issue last night, I just got a moto x DE for my wife, and a new laptop since last March when I unlocked my moto x DE. "adb devices" returned nothing, and I had a fresh install of the SDK and the moto drivers. Both old and new laptop on Win 7 64-bit. I googled trying to find a solution, but didn't find anything that worked. Grabbed my old laptop, hooked up to it, and it worked fine.
One suggestion I saw and didn't try was to remove/reload the moto drivers. Since I got it working and got her phone unlocked with my old laptop, I didn't pursue further.

Adb devices wont work when the phone is in Booloader/fastboot mode.
Make sure you have the latest Moto drivers from here -> https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/88481
Follow this -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/ADB.htm To install The Android SDK, PlatformTools, and mFastboot, and add platform tools to the Path.
once that is done.. type fasboot devices and see if you get anything. If no, look at Device Manager and make sure there are no ! or such in there.
This is what worked for me. Posting here for posterity and potential helpfulness.

Even that wouldn't help him if he was trying to use adb while in the bootloader.

[Pure Edition][Root] Superboot style root for MotoX 2014 Pure Edition

Follow directions, do NOT flash this image. Flashing the image will bootloop you (easily fixed by flashing proper boot.img). You must only BOOT this image. Again DO NOT FLASH IT, I won't help you out of any mess you get yourself into with this.
Unlock your device with Motorola's site
Boot Image
Device will boot up, install su and quickly reboot.
Then install Chainfire's SuperSU from the Play Store
unzip pure2014sb.zip
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot pure2014sb.img
Running up in Moto X Retail BR, Tks
Thanks!!! Now my weekend is complete.

jcase, awesome as always. You are such a great help to all of us "regular people" here at XDA.
From Droidviews: http://www.droidviews.com/root-motox-2014-pure-edition-with-superboot/
Prerequisites
A Moto X 2014 with unlocked bootloader. You can unlock the bootloader by following the instructions given at Motorola official page.
Set up ADB and Fastboot on your computer or download the minimal ADB and fastboot tool from here (unzip it).
Install Motorola USB Drivers on your computer.
Download the modified boot image by jcase: pure2014sb.zip
Open Settings> Developer options and enable USB Debugging on your device.
Root MotoX 2014 Pure Edition with Superboot
Having taken care of the prerequisites mentioned above, you can now proceed to root your Moto X 2014. Just follow the steps given below.
1. Extract the pure2014sb.zip file and copy the pure2014sb.img file into the platform-tools folder (in case you have Android SDK installed) or copy the files into the mfastboot v2 folder.
2. While the folder with ADB and fastboot files is open, right-click on an empty space and select “Open command window here” option to launch a cmd.
3. Connect your Moto X 2014 to computer using a USB cable.
4. Now type the following command in the cmd window and press the Enter key:
adb reboot bootloader
5. Your phone will reboot into the Fastboot mode.
6. Then issue the following command:
fastboot boot pure2014sb.img
7. When the phone boots up, install su and quickly reboot it.
8. When the device boots up again, go to Google Play store and install the SuperUser app.
Motorola site says my phone is not elgible for unlocked bootloader. Have Tmo pure edition 2014 Moto X. Any ideas?
So for the rest of us that got a carrier phone (not the pure edition) -
I got the ATT one with all the bloat on it. I'd really like to get rid of that crap.
Is there some way I could flash one of the factory gsm images here? via the stock recovery or via adb?

As of now, no you cant. ATT may or may not (probably not) get a bootloader unlock. It probably will eventually get root though, and when it does you can use a root app to uninstall those system apps from ATT. No guarantee the phone will work properly after you get rid of them though, it is possible that some OS modifications rely on parts of those apps.
yeah i pretty much can't wait until i get root access -
i'm pretty confident killing the att bloat isn't going to affect the it- i disabled every one of their apps within 10 minutes of having the phone...
i just wish i could load up ti backup and get rid of them...

This 7th step is automatic. The phone will boot and install su files and quickly reboot after that.

[Q] adb Help Please

Hi
Moto X
Rooted
Resurrection Remix 5.1.1
BL unlocked
Phone unlocked
In the platform-tools "adb devices" command returns just a blank!
I've tried every solution I can find on the net and nothing works.
Is it the ROM?
Any ideas appreciated.
Thanks
Steps I would take. Make sure adb debugging is checked on in developer options. Make sure Moto drivers are installed correctly. Try a different USB port (2.0 not 3.0). Try a different USB cable.

Mine does that when I am using a charging-only cable because it doesn't have data lines to connect to the computer. YCMV (Your Cable May Vary)
If you are running a unix-like OS like Linux, OS X, etc., then you will need to do:
Code:
[B]sudo[/B] adb devices
Once you have the daemon running with elevated privileges then you will be able to run any other adb command without having to run it through sudo -- until you close that terminal session.
I don't know if this principle would apply when you are using a non-privileged account in Windows. But if you are logged in as a normal user (the safe way to run Windows) then try running CMD.exe 'As Administrator' and see if that works for you.
Thanks all
Got it to work. needed to not be in bootloader mode!
