So I would have gotten a Note Pro or a Tab Pro, but those reviews were generally pretty pessimistic about the battery life. The reviews for the new Tab S are a lot more positive about battery. What explains the difference? Just curious.

So, I can answer this at least in reference to the 8.4.
The battery capacity is slightly larger 4900mAh vs 4800mAh. But beyond this, it really depends on how the tablet is used. In amoled screens, pixels are individually lit. That means no power is required for black pixels because the individual LEDs are just off. In the case of the Tab Pro's screen, the LCD has a backlight that covers the entire screen, so basically the same amount of illumination is given to dark pixels as light, which is the reason why the contrast is reduced vs the amoled screen.
A (simplification of a) trade-off here is that at a certain ratio of light to dark pixels, it uses more energy to power an amoled screen vs a backlit LCD at the same brightness. So generally, if you're watching a dark movie using apps with dark backgrounds energy consumption will be lower. The opposite can be said about viewing images with bright vibrant colors. It's really hard to gauge what the net gain or loss is under a normal use scenario, but it seems that we may be able to presume that it is at least slightly more efficient based upon the initial reviews.
I've read some reviews that indicate 12+ hours of use at 50% brightness. My guess is that these things used in the real world would get battery life somewhere between 7 and 9 hours. I have an older Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 (AMOLED) and that's roughly what I get.
Wow. Thanks for the explanation. One of the reviews I read where there was a divergent test (web surfing rundown vs video rundown) and the Tab S did *way* better on the video rundown .
So far: 10.5 model, 32GB, initial charge, low brightness (25% or less), lots of video streaming, video downloading, lots of screen use, lots of surfing, lots of wi-fi use, I'm at 8 hours use time with 33% charge remaining.
We would all like infinite battery life but in "real world use", I think this is pretty decent battery life.

How can you enjoy that at 25% brightness. That kind of defeats the purpose of having a phenomenal display.

I enjoy it easily. A phenomenal display does not require "flame thrower brightness". Quite the opposite. I wasn't outside in the blazing sun. Additionally, I've never used monitors, TVs, tablets or phone at 100% or even 50% brightness -- it's just too bright for me, so why waste the battery power? I think people have become acclimated to jacking up the brightness because of poor LCD display black levels and viewing angles. Manufacturers like to cheat with contrast ratios by boosting the backlight because low black levels are so much more difficult and expensive to produce.
Lol 25% brightness? Seriously? Do you use a flashlight?
I'm running about 80% brightness and have had the tablet off battery for about 3 1/2 hours and actually using it for about 2 1/2 hours. I'm now at 48% battery. So real world use at realistic brightness? 6 to 7 hours.
* Caveat. I am confident this will improve a bit as the battery gets broken in.
So far the battery life is bad at best. Third day using this and it's not getting better. 2 hours and 29 minutes of use this morning and I'm down 29%. That's putrid. Normal Web browsing and the tapatalk app. I need root in the worst way. The lag is also pretty bad. I'm not even using touch wiz (Google Now Launcher). If it wasn't for this beautiful screen and weight of this tablet it would be going back.

I have found that turning the wifi to "only when plugged in" doubles my battery time. I just traded in the 8.4 pro for the 10.5 S and discovered this fact while using the Pro for the last week. I just picked up my 10.5 S tab and have been good battery time since turning the wifi off all the time.
Are you talking about the"keep WiFi on during sleep" setting? I'll try that but it seems like a bug then as that should only apply when charging in sleep.

Battery life is exactly what people should expect with an AMOLED display. They're poor on whites and excellent on blacks. Whether that's good or bad depends on what ratio of each people view.

Sounds like you have a bad egg. I'm using Nova Launcher too. And it blazing fast! No lag at all. Maybe a small hiccup when downloading files but barely noticeable. Your batter drain is alarming. I'd send yours back cuz that's OBVIOUSLY not normal..
Not when you're 80% brightness. The most I use indoors in 30%. I'll crank it up to show off, or when I'm outdoors.

That's true. But why did all the reviews say it was excellent. Not one bad review. Crazy.
I've found the drain to be about 10% per hour on my 8.4". I'm usually using it set to 25% brightness, which seems to be ideal for any conditions in which you are out of sunlight. The people who are using it at brightness levels of over 50% are the ones who need their eyes checked.

I agree on this one, I have the brightness set at 50 % and the display is so bright inside buildings that there is no need to go higher. I don't know what everyone is complaining about, but my battery drain is about 8 - 10 % per hr, normal use, web browsing, video, facebook etc.. I have 8.4 model.
I just like a super bright screen. Can't imagine running this at 25% brightness. What a waste.

Waste of what? If anything above 25% is too bright for someone (eyestrain, preference) then the waste would be increased battery drain.
If burn-in is any cause for concern, keeping the brightness low for the first 50 or so hours of use may reduce the chances of burn-in for the life of the tablet.
More is not necessarily better.

already replaced the battery before i got the new phone.
Dude same here. It's obvious the N1 is lacking in battery technology. What new phones are you considering?
that's definitely a dead battery, I've got my Nexus One since 2nd March and keep using it till now, still there is 92% of usable capacity.
Check the battery cal thread. We just finally hacked the nexus battery EEPROM chip and can tweak voltage etc. The changes got merged this week. So maybe some hope still...
well these things can definitely kill the battery extremely quickly if you use them a lot.
i personally don't have a problem with the battery life on mine on a normal work day because i only use it probably on average 5-10 min an hour for a 9 hour work day and by then i'm usually at 50-65% battery depending on how much i used my phone.
if you suspect that the phone is the problem and not the battery then try downloading currentwidget its a small widget that will tell you exactly how much power your phone is using in miliamps. it takes about 1 min for it to refresh so it does not work in real time but this is kind of nice because it allows you to see how much power its taking (or receiving if its on the charger) when its in idle
mine usually reads 3-5 mA when i unlock it so that is what its taking when its in sleep mode.
the most i've ever seen it take when draining the battery is about 465mA i would say that the average drain when i'm using it for browsing websites and using simple apps with the screen at half brightness is about 350-400ma or so
one thing is for sure though if you use an N1 heavily it can and will kill the battery in a matter of hours, if i play angry birds for example with my screen on half brightness after a few hours i'm at about 20-30% battery easily and the phone itself is very warm from the constant CPU use.
and btw the bad battery life is the combination of the AMOLED that takes massive power compared to an LCD and the 1st gen Snapdragon CPU clocked at 1ghz, battery life without the screen on and with minimal CPU use like streaming music for example or playing music with BT headphones i can go all day easily. it only drains like 5% an hour maybe a tad more but the difference is that the CPU is not working very hard and the screen is off completely.
AMOLED using more than LCD? What did you smoke mate? ^^
AMOLEDs have been made for low power consumption, especially for black colors...no way it uses more battery than my SLCD variant...

they can take less power with the proper screens yes, they are dynamic in their power consumption like plasma's are in that how much power they use is directly related to what they are displaying and what the brightness (or contrast in the case of plasma's) is set at.
LCD's are predictable and constant with their power drain.
AMOLED's are capable of consuming more power than LCD's of the same size if given the right display material (mostly white, mostly brightly lit content)
considering that most of the websites and even some apps i use on my nexus have white backgrounds it explains why my screen pulls so much power when i'm using it

There was a test done somewhere that showed that all the phones with AMOLED variants did the worst in battery life. Best battery? Droid x
true, white on white, amoled does use more battery...but meh...argh it killed my point xD
haha yeah you're right I guess Websites should have black background and green text, just like my terminal, gmail, etc. meh ^^

that sounds jsut like my phone. 5 to 10 minutes of use an hour and im at 60 percent. that cant be normal! angry birds for 10 minutes is like 8 percent battery loss. like i said i got a new battery for my old nexus one then noticed that the "issue" still existed so i got a new nexus one and my phone still dies rapidly. why is it that some nexus ones are better. i hear people say they get excellent battery life and to me on a brand new nexus one with a uv kernel my battery life is still horrible?

How much is the display uptime on that?
Looks like you might be using a very high brightness level!
Yes tap on the display line to show more details of how many of your 14h the display was on? My guess is 3
Try lowering your screen brightness and using black backgrounds wherever possible. You can't blame such a gorgeous display for using power!
To be fair thats quite an average percentage and whats wrong with 14hrs uptime with around 50% battery left?? And think about it.. the screen is massive what do u think is gonna take up most of your battery?
My brightness setup is 0%. And you can see it's drop a massive amount of juice when the scree is on.

Those are fairly ordinary statistics. I don't see why you should be unhappy at all.

Me to. Except on those days when people will not leave me alone. Those days, the Cell Phone usage sits squarely at the top ...
Yep, that looks like fairly standard usage to me.
Looking at my phone now, it is at around 17hrs, with about 3hrs screen on, and 44% left.
I normally get around 5hrs screen on time no matter how I use it. If I really hammer it, with internet, music, games, etc, I can drain the thing in less than 10 hours. If i take it easy, I can get almost 2 days out of it. Either way, I still get about 5 hours of screen on time in total.

Non rooted stock firmware (LA4 until yesterday, now LB1)
Usually brightness set to 0% (unless i'm outside), Wifi and mobile data off when I'm not using it, ditto bluetooth and GPS.
Doing the same thing with my Dell Streak I used to get about 4 hours, so I'd say the battery life on the note is about 25% better in comparison.
Hi!
I was just wondering what battery life I can expect when playing android games and using emulators like fpse and n64oid? Wifi off and screen brightness at like 70%. I found battery tests on video playback and browsing, but not gaming. Thanks!
I reckon around 2 to 2.5hours deffinatley no more than 3!, high brightness and high processor usage is a sure way to drain your battery FAST!

Oh, that was not super good lol. I guess I should reconsider picking up a 5000mah external usb charger for 20 dollars on ebay. This phone looks like a really good combination of tablet and phone though, so I think I might get it. Thanks for the answer!
To be fair though when you get the phone youll realise that 70% is quite bright(too bright imo for indoors) I have mine set at 20% most of the time, that'll probably up it to a deffinate 3 hours constant play.
I dont often play games too be honest, I mostly just browse the web and draw a few pictures, i average around 4 to 4.5 hours constant use, I rarely get past 5!

I dont know about you guys but im getting outstanding battery life. I'm going to do a test later today. Im going to charge my phone upto 100 (after it reaches 0 today) and then when 5 minutes after it says is 100, i will unplug it and i will put a 1440p video that last more than 8 hours and see how long it last with full brightness and wifi on. Then im going to post Very specific details about how everything went. Oh , aslo it will have speaker at its maximum
oh and just have in mind, i have 35 user apps installed, and some of them constantly sync (so it means more battery consumption)
Just over 3hrs. I dont think my phone has started optimizing apps or putting them in Doze.
My sot had been nothing short of spectacular.. I'm getting 5hr average... nexus 6 would barely reach 3... my g4 not even 3 also..I always wondered how people were getting above 4hrs.. Ive gotten 6+.....I jus miss stock Android
I get 4 hours with medium usage and leave everything on. Wifi, BT etc. Brightness is on Auto but it shows at 50% to 70% most of the time at work. It's my bright office...LOL

Same as I got yesterday... I don't do anything to try and extend battery life though (brightness always on auto, and I usually turn it up a little bit). Today will be my 2nd full day with the phone, and after 2 hours off the charger I had 99% left (only 5 minutes screen on time), but then I used the phone for about 15 minutes and it dropped quick to 94%)... Time shall tell, hopefully it is till just optimizing like you said...
I'm on my 2nd charge and like you guys above, I'm getting abysmal battery life.
I'll give the phone another week or so to optimise, and if it doesn't - it'll be sent back to T-Mobile with a piss poor rating in terms of battery life. What a shame if that's the case..
2 hr 17 minutes screen on time. 68% left, second screen turned on while sleep. Loving it! Restored all my app backup from Google, so its not a plain phone.
This is after my first full charge it's only gonna get better as I rarely install new apps.
Auto brightness at times, manual on others, as the brightness of this phone doesnt compare at all to my note 4.

First full day at work with the phone, and actually pretty light usage day and gotta say the battery is a bit of a let down so far. My shorter days at work over the weekend gave me some concerns, but today I'm at 2% left with 13h 28m standby and 2h 17m screen time. No calls, no videos. Maybe a dozen messages, web browsing, 20mins of spotify for commute. Frankly it "feels" like it lasts the same as my 2 year old m8.
10hours 45Minutes
I don't have a sim in mine so all my use is just on Wi-Fi. Indoor use with 30-40% brightness, 49 apps and services disabled. The day after this I did 1080p 60fps video streaming while plugged into my Bose speakers using the Hi-Fi DAC for a little over 5Hours and got about 6.5Hours total SOT. But so far 10hours 45 minutes is my record. Another time I did get right at 10 hours so it wasn't a fluke.
I'm not activating mine either so that's pretty sweet.

Hey, can you share any settings you may have altered to receive such SoT. I'll be lucky if I get 4. I used to get 6-7 hours on the Note 7 I had.
Yeah the battery life sucks, and I like everything else about the phone except ****ty LED screen (I know why they didn't use AMOLED, not cost, but because with no physical home button, the buttons would burn images in AMOLED, LED won't). In any case the true test of a battery is Pokemongo at 100% brightness (which you need with this screen at all times to look half way decent). Note 7 5 hrs, Note 4 4 hours, V20 3 hours, all at 100% and same resolution/settings. So yeah, the battery life sucks, end of discussion. And my phone is a week old, no bloat and settled. Another quirk is sometimes Antutu gets 147k excellent score and sometimes it gets half that, for no reason at all, as well as 3dMark being horrible as well for some reason, half of what it should be.
This is my third LG phone (Had the V10 and G5 before), and the battery performance appears very strong on this. On my first full, non-setup charge, and using my normal work activities (lots of emails, texts, calls, and periodic social media), here's what I got
Total time on battery: 54 hrs 52 min
Total call time: 3hrs 2 min
Total SOT 2hrs 44min
That's great life a regular business user. Also, the screen is way brighter than the V10 and G5.
I've been getting phenomenal standby time on this phone, thanks to the new and improved Doze, better than any other phone I've ever had actually. I'm just not getting great SOT, like many others out there and I can't figure out why. I've had the phone for about a week now and all of the apps should've been optimized by now, I think. Anyone else having similar issues?
Sent from my LG-H918 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Dmarco, a factory reset could be the solution
Guys it is simple. It is the same Snapdragon 820 in about 10 other devices with similiar battery sizes. But the V20 will get A LOT less screen on time, my estimation is 25-50% less depending on how bright the screen is. I need the screen at 100% and low comfort blue filter to make the screen even kinda decent, like a Samsung at 70% brightness. Anyways the LCD screen on the V20 eats A LOT of battery power, it can't compete with an AMOLED. That said, the only benefit is that in 2 years your screen won't have any burn in and be worthless.
Playing Candy Crush for 22 hours straight can take its toll on your battery (and your marriage). Rate this thread to express how the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra's battery performs under heavy use. A higher rating indicates that it lasts a long time even when playing games, streaming video and audio, and doing other CPU-intensive activities.

Sure! Here is what I would recommend to try and get 8 hours SOT (without gaming).....
- Medium Battery Power Saving Mode
- Brightness: 30% Manual
- Haptic Touch Disabled
- Haptic Typing Disabled
- Always On Display enabled for tap to show with adaptive brightness off and manual brightness set to minimum
- Dark Theme
- Viibrations for Calls and Notifications off, only sound or silent
- Phone setup clean with out using app backup when setting up the phone
- make sure on the most recent August Security Patch
With those settings even with adaptive 120hz and FHD+ it should still be possible with 8+ Hours SOT.
Snapdragon or exynos?
During the 3 days I borrowed the N20U, I was getting around 4hrs 30mins SOT with heavy usage throughout the day, taking pictures, browsing the web/internet/reddit, youtube, a little bit of light gaming (pirates outlaws, night of the moon, windrunner), listening to music, and installing/upgrading apps etc...
I'm going to borrow it for another 3 days to see the best SOT I can get without having to resort to lessening the brightness below 50%, and with 120hz enabled
GSMArena's endurance rating of N20 Ultra is 88h, Note 10+ is 107h, Note 9 is 97. WTF samsung!
Edit: Currently have all these devices and my experience seems proving that relatively these endurance ratings are correct. Kinda regret buying the N20 Utra.
Battery use will vary depending on how each person uses their device even turning off so many things and limiting things signal also comes into play. I could limit all the things mentioned and still not get to the Holygrail of 8hrs screen time because I know the signal where I live duck's. So yeah those things help but it really depends on how each of us uses our devices..location..data and all those things factor into it not just turning everything down or off.

Agreed. In fact, coming from ANY decent battery phone (such as my P30 Pro) will give battery anxiety. I've just give up on Samsung phone battery life, and have decided to purchase wireless chargers everywhere (all rooms in my house, office, car, etc...) I'll also carry an extra phone or two so I can switch sims when I'm in a jam lol.
