Search for Philz kernel first then look for ICS kernels choose the one matching your build number, download .zip file and put it on external sd card and flash from stock recovery, you will have root and safe kernel (as ICS has dreaded brickbug). Try KitKat.

First, read up about the s2/note brickbug just like @treacherous_hawk mentioned, this is important because you could hard brick your device very easily on 4.0.3
Once that is done, flash Philz kernel. That will stop the brickbug and you will have root.

[Q] stuck on the samsung logo after update

Hi All,
My galaxy note is stuck on the Samsung logo and just hangs there.
some info on what I did.
My phone has been rooted (this has been done a while now still on stock rom)
I put phone back to factory settings (as wanted to start fresh) all was fine still rooted
I got a pop-up message about a update so I installed the update phone rebooted
Then I got another message about a update think it was kernel file update
phone rebooted
Then I got another message about android 4 so installed this phone rebooted and now it just hangs when it gets to the Samsung logo.
I can get into recovery mode.
Any ideas what I should do?
I have done lots of searches but did not want to make things worse (if possible)
Should I try and flash ICS using Odin3 v1.85?
Or should I just send phone back to Samsung?
Flash a stock Gingerbread Rom using PC Odin. Then,if you want you can update to official ICS without rooting or root GB and flash custom ROMS.
Dont wipe anything from the default kernel CWM, see if your storage can connect to PC, if yes then copy CF kernel 5.6 lq3 and Abyss kernel 4.2 and flash Abyss kernel first and go to advance reboot recovery, then do full wipe, then flash CF kernel 5.6 lq3
Hi Thanks for the replies
I checked and I can go into recovery and access the sd card
I could not find the kernels you mentioned do you have a link to them
also when I have flashed both kernels will I then have to flash a rom?
maybe the ginger bread one like NoRmAlY_CrAzY said
I found this one that am downloading
N7000XXKKA ------ 2.3.6 2011 November------- N7000CPWKK3 -----------United Kingdom (Carphone Warehouse)
Should I flash that?
-------
ok I flashed the ginger bread rom using rom Odin and its working i'll have to root again now i'll have to go read some threads about updating to ICS
Thanks Angie

(q) stock isc with speedmod kernel

Hi.. i'we done odin flash on my N7000 form GB to ISC xxlq3 (slo) and than i flashed speedmod kernel over it..
but i didn't root it before.. because on the official speedmode page doesn't say it needs to be rooted before
can I safely downgrade with dr.ketan tut??? or can i flash chainfire's CF-Root-SGN_XX_SEB_LQ3-v5.6-CWM5 over speedmod
and yes i also have 0x19 bug
help needed :good:
thank you
If you have flashed speedmod via PC Odin, means your phone is already rooted. It comes with speedmod. You should see Superuser app on your app drawer. No worries for now. Next step, you might like to search for 'yellow triangle'.
Take it easy. One step at a time, otherwise you will be overwhelmed.
PS: I did my rooting the same way as you did, with GB at that time. It was my first custom flashing business
Don't worry !! You can use the root validator to check for root. If things are good you can start you flashing sessions. Else you can use Dr.Ketan's rooting for ICS http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26455511&postcount=2475. Just a simple process. Cherios. :good:

thats the problem i don't see it .. should i try to flash it over again ??? ..
and by the way official post says :
[KERNEL] SpeedMod N7000 ICS [K3-7 CWM CIFS ROOT / NO-ROOT]
also when i boot in recovery in main menu look like samsung recovery and when i enter some of the menus the CWM logo appears
hope its not bricked
Just follow dr.ketan's guide in the link above. Could be your speedmod flashing was unsuccessful. Can you check again in Settings -> About phone -> Kernel version?
hope this is last question

kernel version is ok it says "speedmod,blah.blah.."
1. for dr.ketan guide should i start from scratch or just the rooting part???
2. I've tried after speedmod kern, to re flash just the cwm but it hangs on the install???? haven't try the cwm.zip from dr.ketan??? should I???
sorry i'm noob
For your LQ3, you should follow dr.ketan's guide. Possibly due to low memory in system partition in LQ3, the new files for rooting (busybox, superuser, su binary) could not be injected. Start afresh, learn something new. Everybody was once a noob before

Just read around the corner before you flash anything. If you have not flashed anything till now than read everything and ask before you take any step.
I know I am being in troubles...
Just read twice our thrice before you flash and if you encounter anything ask instant before you brick..
Have a happy flashing...
Above thread link will give you all the needed details....
Hit thanks if I have helped..

1. Use PC Odin and flash SpeedMod or Notecore... (I would prefer speedmod though)
2. Your phone will reboot after, and you will know immediately if your rooted if you have the yellow exclamation point on the boot screen.
3. To remove the yellow exclamation point, download and run TriangleAway.apk and you should be good to go after that.

Not the best advise and the way to guide a new member
Triangle away must only be used as a last resort!
@OP read DR.K's thread and install CMW then download one of the safe kernal (Emmc removed kernal like notecore or speedmod) and flash it.

I just dont want you to be confused hence pasting the info you need from Dr.K's thread

- Download This (Credit goes to Chainfire for creating amazing tool.Source.)
-Copy downloaded file to Ext SD card.
-Reboot into recovery
-Select install zip from ext SD card
-select 'CWM-SuperSU-v0.94.zip' which you have copied to Ext card above
-Reboot device
-You can see superSU on appl drawer.
-Go to Market and install Busybox
-Open Busybox, you can see 'Install' inside busybox application. Install it

you don't get my point bud, but I respect you on it.
the fact that the OP is in 4.0.4 means he is in CWM already(not CMW you say). I indicated he should flash Speedmod am I right? so what point of my instruction is not clear to you??
P.S. yeah you can skip my #3 instruction(on TriangleAway) if you like seeing the Yellow triangle icon everytime you boot up your phone. There's no problem with that!

let me tell you, I think you did not get my point and even the OP's point I think.
Everytime you flash a ROM, let's go with Stock okay?.. GB-ICS 4.0.3- ICS4.0.4.. CWM is always a part of it.
The fact that the O.P. is already in 4.0.4 ICS means to say he has CWM already on his phone. Now the integral part on my instruction (if you look back to read it), First, flash a safe kernel like Speedmod using PC ODIN.
Of course, you will get that yellow exclamation after flashing the kernel(the phone's rooted already). Only way you can clear that out is to use Triangle Away.. That's my whole point here.
What's with CWM by the way? your the one bringing it up in the first place.
@Letters-to-cleo
I think some misunderstanding, you both are right. You had PM.
@ravi
I think lettwr-to-cleo referring cwm, is about stock recovery.

N7000XXLSA 4.1.2 Root

Today I got the 4.1.2 ROM from SAMMOBILE at: http://www.sammobile.com/2012/11/28/n7000xxlsa-–-galaxy-note-android-4-1-2-jelly-bean-test-firmware/
As usual I used Odin 3 to flash the files and everything went fine, however I was convinced I would lost the Root, and so did I... I tried installing the Philz's safe Kernel I had for 4.1.1 N7000XXLS2 but after that when rebooting there is no Samsung logo anymore and the phone never boots up.
Any ideas would be highly appreciated!
Lucky for you...
I tried download that firmware, but the file hosting is always stop when i reach about 600 to 800 MB...

How did you attempt to install Philz kernel?
I installed Philz kernel with Odin 1.85 and after that installed it again through CWM since the Odin install didn't gave me root.

Use the xxlsa kernel not the xxls2 one
---------- Post added at 02:24 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:23 AM ----------
If you can't get into recovery, flash the firmware again using odin and then do the procedure again using zip file xxlsa philz kernel.
Rooting N7000XXLSA (4.1.2)
I installed the ROM over my stock ICS 4.0.4 N7000ODDLR4 usin PC Odin 3.
An advice I can give is, after and before installation, always do a factory reset from recovery mode! Otherwise I myself and lot of others had experienced some bugs due on data from previous OS files.
For rooting, I loaded Clockwork Recovery Mod 6.0.1.2 and used SuperSU from Chainfire to gain root access. No mishap for me, as I didnt get any trouble loading to 'recovery mode'
Now the JB 4.1.2 on my Note N7000 is rooted and open for me!!
Hope this helps somewhat.
P.S. the SuperUser which I used to root 4.0.4 didnt work on this 4.1.2
And I 'didnt' do any kernal change as I have no idea how to do what with kernal, except its use.

[Q] Phone is nothing more than a brick

Please respond as soon as possible. I was having Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean XXLS2 Firmware. on my galaxy note with Philz Recovery( CWM Recovery Version 6.0.1.4) and wanted to install Ultimate N7000 XXLSA JellyBean 4.1.2 v5. I was also having root access on my phone, but I mistakenly flashed my GL_NOTECORE_HYDRACORE_v4-3b_STD.tar from the URL "GL_NOTECORE_HYDRACORE_v4-3b_STD.tar" and now I am having exclamation mark after starting the phone and whenever I try to install the XXLSA JellyBean it never finishes and my phone is not responding and just struck on exclamation mark. Please let me know what should I do to get the XXLSA Jelly Bean i think i am missing either the kernel, rom or recovery. PLease it is urdent
flash stock firmware via odin.
Maybe GB first to get it booting, then full wipe, then flash the LSA leak.
If you can get into recovery flash a revert.zip from the hydracore thread and install philz kernel again
