Probably around 3 months after Google releases it, but they say they changed the release method to this new one to allow faster updates for OEMs.

I question mark the Android lifecycle support policies generally and SamSung specifically. As you're all aware of that if you're Windows Phone or iOS user, you will get the best of it for at least 4 years :good:
In terms of visual design, what is most likely going to change when Samsung puts Touchwiz on it? Do you think most of the card style interface will remain? what about the bright contrasting colour theme?

I assume not much since Google is doing its best to limit OEM skinning on android
Guys its too soon to talk about Android L now cuz it is still under development from google and after its release in Fall as they assume, Samsung will then take it and develop it itself to be compatible with touchwiz and all bloat ware then test and then release to public and in phases not all at once.
I assume it will take 6 to 7 months, maybe when S6 arrives will arrive with new android L.
I plan to start development for auto extension of L. However I am curious about supporting it from car makers. Did Google already shared info which maker will make HU compatible with Android L? What kind of interface do they plan to use? I assume BT isn't sufficient for transferring video.
1. Brightness slider in notification bar
2. Battery saver
3. Pop-up notification
4. DND
5. Knox
^^ All these above are already present in many Samsung phone. Stock Android have lot of catching up to do with OEM software in terms of actual usability.
UI tweaks for me is the last thing I am worried about.

Sure but Google's still playing catch up with OEMs' skins. My guess is that we won't see much of a difference in appearance, but we'll have awesome performance on Samsung's top hardware.

Just saw this: http://www.sammobile.com/2015/06/01/exclusive-samsung-to-start-rolling-out-android-5-1-1-lollipop-update-to-galaxy-note-4-by-the-end-of-july/
"Google revealed the developer preview of the next big version of its mobile device operating system – Android M – last week during Google I/O 2015, and the release of its final version is due in Q3 2015. Now, you must be thinking if Samsung is too slow in updating its existing smartphones and tablets to the latest version of Android.
Samsung has already improved its software update game starting this year, and it has already rolled out Lollipop update many existing devices. Now, Samsung is already testing beta versions of Android 5.1.1-based ROMs for various existing devices, and we’ve already shown you the upgraded camera app for the Galaxy S6 and the S6 edge that will be released with Android 5.1.1 update for the devices.
Many Galaxy Note 4 users are impatiently waiting for Samsung to release Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for the device. Well, here’s some good news for those guys. According to our highly placed sources, Samsung is planning to release Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update to the Galaxy Note 4 by the end of July. As usual, we will be the first ones to show you the upcoming ROM running on the actual device."
:good:
5.1.1 was released on april 9 so this is somewhat fast considering that.
but never trust samsung and their time lines.

as an s6 edge user with note 4 i can say. new touchwiz is mostly same with what you are using on your note 4 with lollipop. but 1 exception performance of s6 is just sucks. insane ram usage, lags everywhere, crash etc. and people call it, its best touchwiz performance its basically a lie. its 1 of worst experiences i have ever had with an flagship device.
camera app just has different design capabilities are same pro mode is basically there for note 4 too.
only themes missing. others basically same.

Honestly I'm just hoping that the Note 5 is going to come with Android M out of the box at this point, because it truly makes a difference; in comparison to lollipop (5.1.1) on my Nexus 5 it's like night and day. Really fantastic update from google this time around.

i still didnt update my old nexus 5. ill try if its that different. i doubt note 5 will have android m out of the box. probably same thing will happen with note 4 and android m will release after note 5. hope it will be perfect on its release time unlike lollipop this year. 5.1.1 should have released as 5.0 last year so all companies could have done the updates fast and perfect.

I'm pretty sure that we'll get none of the features you mentioned.
I hope it is not another firmware number change & new theme to be used like the Lollipop 5.0.1
We need full active Lollipop the latest change in toggle, the new camera API 2 with RAW support & the new themes with other Galaxy S6 & Lollipop improvements.
not to forget battery life fix & RAM high usage.
for 32 bit or 64 bit matter I hope they activate 64 bit ability in Exynos version …………… that will be awesome.
Sadly, this update doesn't come with Camera 2 Api or S6 features. Just under the hood updates (memory bug fixes, etc).

How do you know ? I think IF they're ever going to release camera 2 for the Note 4, they're going to do it with 5.1.1 release
---------- Post added at 02:23 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:16 AM ----------
BTW I honestly feel the 5.1.1 update wasnt all that interesting (the CM users have been on it a while). The Nexus users reported some performance improvements but these were mainly due to kernel changes. So if Samsung did some good work there, it might be interesting. Otherwise, the 5.1.1. update is going to be quite a non event in my opinion.
I hope they include themes. As somebody on a non bootable US Carrier version, themes would at least allow me to stop looking at the same damn icons I've had on every Samsung device I've had over the last 5 years!

Sammy sold the highest android phones number, and yet they so slow in providing updates, they start testing beta in next month only.

Because Samsung has touchwiz and has to make it perfectly compatible. Takes a while.
That's not an excuse, HTC M9 getting 6.0 tommorow and A9 getting 6.0.1, G4 already getting 6 and G3 started to get it today... Samsung is soo late only now they releasing beta 6.0 to certain GS6 devices.
Yes, it IS an excuse. It is just one that you don't like.
Samsung is updating at the speed they want. I would fully bet that they were intentionally waiting for 6.0.1, as 6.0.0 likely had some issues they wanted to see fixed.

If that would happen, that could backfire so fast specially since 6.0 was released to all other devices. heck G3 and GS5 released same year, yet G3 already getting android 6.0, idk if galaxy s5 will get it, and if it will probably Q2 2016... Samsung support is lacking and need to be changed, but since they beta testing android 6.0 now, i hope they won't use it as an excuse to "delay" it to until GS7 launches.
It's been well known fact Samsung always behind to provide latest update then why one should buy Samsung devices?
Google test everything for their devices before os release so they don't have to wait that's very clear and not difficult to understand their devices always will remain first to get os update. Comparison with LG or HTC have no sense as well as as far as no one have hardware differences as compare to Samsung. Do they have to think about spen? Samsung theme? S health? NO
These are the features needs to modify almost everything to provide support with new os and can only be understand if you have developed something.
They can split the updates to two parts, the main Android 6.0 base update without updating the minor stuff like s health, themes, and just make S Pen compatible, then after short while release a package of updates android 6.0 updates, idk if it possible, but sure as hell Samsung could be faster, again if they put 6.0.1 with as little to no bugs, then i prefer it over rushed release.

I think this time a little bit different. They seem want to improve their Rom quality, do it more carefully. Years ago I realize that Sam S series always be first to update because they are flagship and almost no special features like Note series. Absolutely I agree with you about Sam Roms are very different to HTC, LG.
But as Note 4 users, I was very angry about their update: no theme, no new features, no change on S Pen function, quite bad battery life.
Anyway, Samsung as most profitable Android OEM, have to change some points, do something better about update and Rom. We pay more, they do more better!

I want 5.5-5.7" phone. Nexus 6 and 6P fit need but their battery life not so good. Note 5 just enough for me fullday usage only after extreme optimized/tweaked.
Samsung galaxy A5 being expensive midranger doesn't got full amdroid marshmallow support! It was upgraded from kitkat to lollipop with some changes but marshamllow upgrade didn't changed anything except Android Version and API level.
Being cheap and lower in specs wise Galaxy J5 got all the Marshmallow feature. It has got theme support, newer notification panel etc. Which galaxy A5 lacks!! What is the reason behind it??
To sell newer devices obviously.
Well, look on the bright side, A5 will eventually get 7.0, while J5 won't.

Yes that may be an marketing strategy to sell newer device!
They have around 30 devices floating around from the last 3 years. The Galaxy S5 for example did not get updated to the newest Touchwiz version although receiving the update to marshmallow. It's a marketing thing for sure but as the average user won't care too much about the UI it's just not worth the hassle to port newest Touchwiz to outdated devices.

It will. I wonder how long it will take Samsung to realise they need to step up their update game. Waiting for an update for a whole year to come - not cool. Only receiving one, max. 2 software updates at all - not cool either. If they really want to beat Apple in the future they need to proof they can handle updates well.

That would be great if we can have an Android O custom ROM. Looking forward to that.
As I've said before in other threads, there's no reason we shouldn't be able to have a custom Android O ROM. What we won't get are features that are specifically for 64-bit processors. So things like the Pixel/Pixel XL Settings app for example are out of the question and we'd have to "make do" with the standard Settings app found in AOSP.

I actually thought about getting a Nexus 6p because it has a 64 bit processor and is an Android O candidate but from what I've read, that phone just has too many glitches so not sure I want to fool with that.
The 6P was never in the running for my next device. At the time, there was no compelling reason for me to pick that device over the N6. The fingerprint sensor was something I could do without both now and in the future, the camera I felt was a step backwards even with the larger pixels, the Snapdragon 810 was a horror show, and the phone was simply ugly. While I could have cured that last one with a case, the fact the 6P bootloops when you breathe on it only validates my decision.

I hear you.
The only reason I considered the 6p was for future OS updates but you are right, the phone is ugly (especially with that sun visor camera screen. Yuk!), the 810 overheats like an old car in the Sahara desert, and bootloops come standard with the phone.
So your points are well taken.
I'm with Verizon so my choices for unlocked, rootable phones with the specs of my Nexus 6 are very limited.
Looks like I'll be sticking with my Shamu for a while.
I am all for keeping my Nexus 6 Shamu and breathing extra life into it with Oreo (as for Oreo being 64-bit only, I will say it once again and for the final time, it's NOT 64-bit only as it will just kill the market for prepaid phones), replacement batteries are getting hard to find, and now I am unsure if I wanna gamble with NewPower99 aftermarket Lithium polymer cells (I may probably have to desolder the battery protection module and just solder new LG Lithium polymer cell on, which is about the only thing that's compatible with Nexus 6's battery management system) - battery fire is no laughing matter, as batteries don't really give you very much warning, even if it does, it's usually too late.
And I also am considering Google Pixel 2 (this time straight from Google Store as I HATE Verizon's stupid locked bootloader policy, that kind of thing pisses me off - the stock ROM can inevitably become bricked with no way to recover for no reasons at all, so TWRP have become a requirement when it comes to owning a smartphone).

In order for Samsung to be included they'd have to make a major overhaul to their one UI that they've just finished building (and is still not finished imo) and they won't just do that for beta testing.
The main reason for my post was about the new features. I just wondered what peoples thought were on them.

Not true at all. Huawei and Xiaomi UI is modified to a large extent.
The reasons you won't see a preview release of Q on Samsungs are the locked bootloader and Samsung's insistence on their own customized UI. If past trends are correct, the Note 9 will get Android Q early next year. Each Samsung phone gets 2 major Android version upgrades so Q will likely be the final one. Also note that Samsung may choose to release it's own version of some new apps/features instead of using Google's implementation.

This clearly shows you have never used MIUI or EMUI before. I have used both as daily drivers and they are modified to a very large degree. And I'll confidently that say it's even more than Samsung. While Q doesn't introduce revolutionary features, there are several small improvements, especially in the privacy front that I guess many users are interested in and using the notion that it's a boring release isn't a very good justification for Samsung delaying it's upgrade plans.
