[Q] Cannot get email to work - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My default email account works, but whenever I try to enter in a new email account, I get the following message:
"Unfortunately, email has stopped."
I am using Dynamic Kat Rom and have rooted the device using the standard instructions included for room, including installing TowelRoot, BusyBox, SafeStrap, etc.
I've searched everywhere for similar issues, and what I've read is that My Magazine has to be installed and running, which I do have, and I enabled it.
Here are the details on my phone:
SAMSUNG-SM-N900A
Android 4.4.2
Baseband N900AUCUCNC2
Hardware version REV0.3
I have to solve this or I'm going to have to go back to stock, which I hated because the bloatware had me looking at a loading icon for 5m every time I opened email. Ironically, the phone is massively faster now but I can't get my other gmail or my work exchange emails on it.
Minor side issue, I am seeing a green check mark in folders for app icons instead of the normal app icons (which I can see when I look at all apps, and it's random on the app - most have their normal icon, some do not).

So I've been working on this some and have successfully added new Google email accounts by adding Google accounts to the main account. Yay!
What I can not do is add a Microsoft Exchange email (my most important need). I get the error listed above about the email not working.
I can launch the My Magazine that was apparently an issue for others and the email app. It runs and gets information, so I don't think its that (unless there is something else I have to check relative to that, but I cant find the original thread discussion that others refer to sometimes in other threads).

Happy to report after monkeying around with every setting imaginable, I've got it to work now.

Email Issue

I recently flashed the [25 February 2009] HyperDragon IV Lite. That went smoothly and is running well. However, I have an email issue to which I haven't been able to find a solution.
The problem is of my own making. I had backed up data before flashing the ROM. After finishing the install, I tried to set up email accounts, but was having an issue with my AT&T account - a whole different matter.
So, after being unable to download email, I decided to restore the backup I'd done. I assume since I'd flashed a new ROM, the following problem occurred.
I can see the email from my personal account in the TouchFlo interface; however, it isn't listed as an account in the accounts list and I can't download new mail or open an inbox. I also can't create the account now since the Tilt thinks it's already been created.
I have no way to delete the account since it's not listed in the account list and can't create a new one for this email address. Additionally, my exchange server was restored and I have the same problem there; except for the fact that I'm getting new email. However, I have a gap of a couple days I can't download because I have no control over the account. It shows in the account list but can't be deleted or changed.
So...does anyone have a good solution to this? A way to remove the accounts so I can start from scratch maybe???
I very much appreciate any help I can get with this.
Thanks,
GT
You can try this, I have used it before to clean out phantom email accounts
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1944125&postcount=3
Thanks for the help. It fixed the Bellsouth to the degree that I could delete it and start over. I still can't manage to delete the Exchange Server account. The options simply aren't available when I attempt to use them. Still working on that one.
Thanks again, I appreciate it.
GT
I ran this program a couple times more, and it finally let me delete the sync relationship and email associated with this exchange server account.
I've been able to reestablish this relationship with exchange online and setup the account correctly. So, both accounts have been corrected.
I appreciate the help very much.
Thanks Again,
GT

Exchange Push email with TOUCHDOWN

Just downloaded and installed the new Touchdown update, that adds Push email.
I immediately paid for the license key after checking the program out.
Kickass App.
Not only does it give me push email for my exchange email, it also allows for multi-selecting emails for deletion.
Finally!!!.
Why Google couldn't have included this, is completely beyond me.
But when I evens ee what theme developers, as well as dxHome can do to chnage the look and feel of the phone, it seems to me that they did the bare minimum.
I still am hoping that future releases will see a much more smoother UI, and see some changes to add SOME eye candy to the Market and other pages.
As right now it's really quite drab and dreary.
Just like the original UI is very boring and bland.
I'm pretty certain the idea was, in fact, to do the bare minimum and then allow apps to extend the OS. It's good in thoery, but only once the apps start rolling in to fill the voids.
What I REALLY hope starts to happen is the ability to REMOVE stock apps once new ones start coming in. I already cant stand having both Mail and K9Mail, Messenging and K9SMS, COntacts and StarContact... that quickly bloats the app drawer and wastes memory.

I downloaded this over the weekend and tried to get it working with no luck. I tried both the 2007 and 2003 configuration, with and without it taking the server certificate. Both failed to work for me.
I wish I could get a working exchange software. Its the only thing missing from well almost from Android

I had a heck of a time getting it to work.
Untill I followed their PDF instructions to the letter.
And it worked immediatly.
Been using it since it was first released. Took me all of 3 minutes use to buy it back in November. I've been part of their beta program since then as well, and the 2.0 versions are just getting better and better.
I've been using it since initial release, then have been using beta builds, works great with pull and push for me. I'm on exchange 2003, support for the app is great, had few issues in early releases, worked with support and they resolved everything in no time.
overall great app, I've stopped using blackberry while ago.
How does the PUSH mail work
I have just installed the new version of Touchdown
it works perfectly, but how does the Push mail service work!!!
in a Blackberry the server updates the phone once a message arrives, but with touchdown no service is activated from the server, so how does the software do it??
Does it keep an internet connection open all the time? if so when my desktop is on and the message is downloaded directly to my Outlook, will it be able to get a copy before it is downloaded to my PC???
i have a limited data plan and that will make a big difference in my bytes consuption
Exchange Push and Touchdown
If you have not had push enabled previously, you will need to configure it from within you Exchange System Manager (Global Setting -> Mobile Services) and enable for your user account in the Active Directory Users and Computers App (Exchange Features - > Mobile Services). Once this is setup, you can follow the instruction provided by NitroDesk to validate and enable push support.
As messages are received by your exchange server, the server sends a message to your configured cellular providers messaging service - which basic sends a text message notification to your phone telling it that you have new mail on the server. The phone's email client then goes out to retrieve it. Operating this way avoids the need to have the email client continuously check the server for new email.
I hope this helps.
I currently have a problem with Touchdown inwhich the push services turn off soon after being enabled. Status goes from "Push Active" to "Push Off" on the main Touchdown screen. Does anyone have any words of wisdom?
Thx

I had the same problem. First check under connection that you have your full e-mail address written. Then under advanced re sync your folders and then under connection try again the active sync. If you don't get an error message when checking for active sync it should work.
do you need to have a static IP on your ISP end in order for this to work?
I'm running exchange server 2003 and want to test TouchDown and hopefully switch off my bb.
Thanks

Help please? Nexus 1 Email troubles

Hello, I really need some help with some email problems here with my nexus 1 (att 3g vers).
It has NOT been rooted, and has android 2.2 installed (prefer to not root btw).
Anyway, the problem is in regard to the android EMAIL app (don't know it's name, but it's the icon of the envelope and yellow @ symbol in it).
I've set it up to handle my other email accounts (comcast and godaddy accounts) - not Gmail. Everything is setup finally and working fine...but for one problem...
once an email arrives, i get the notification...go to read it, BUT - then after reading it...it's then moved to the trash automatically (the trash in the email app that is, it's not removed from the server.
Driving me nuts - it's no longer in the inbox area of the email app, for each and every account). Each email just automatically disappears (goes to the trash) upon my reading it one time.
I can go to the trash folder and read, but this is ridiculous...shouldn't I be the one moving emails to the trash?
Can anyone suggest a fix here, or know of anything I can do to stop this?
I see no settings to change this...it's a serious bug.
Or...is there a better email app (one like this, as I do like the look and feel of this one built into android 2.2) that I should be using?
I downloaded K-9 email (but really hate it's look, feel and operation compared to this one).
Maybe there is something I'm not getting here though and need to change?
It's very strange that ea email would move to the trash upon 1st reading it.
thanks for any help here
also, i have tried searching this site for this problem with zero luck...
but i can't be the only one seeing this issue, right?
again: these accounts are my comcast and godaddy email accounts (not gmail, hotmail, etc).
thanks again
sorry man, I tried looking at my settings to see if theres anything I can suggest. Nada...
update to my Q:
Ok, doyeee
I think I know what's going on....
I was just setting comcast and godaddy accounts up and had the the email apps open on my PC at the same time while running tests.
When I did email tests, and having the PC email apps open for the same accounts...after they download to the PC is when they will go to the trash on the nexus email (not staying in INBOX on nexus when the PC email app has downloaded them).
This might be standard (I don't know as this is finally the first phone able to handle emails like this.
Hmm, i'd sure prefer it if all emails could remain in the inbox (or some other folder other than trash) as I can't hit "reply" once they're in the trash should I later want to reply to the same email with more info later on mobile.

[Q] Cognition Froyo 2.2 - Exchange Email not working

Just went to Cognition 2.3b8 (froyo), mostly because I dont know any better and that appeared to be the most bug-free Froyo ROM for Captivate.
Anyway, I'm pretty happy with it so far, except that I cannot get Exchange email setup for work. I enter the same settings that I used in Eclair, but get the following error:
"Setup Could Not Finish. Unable to connect server".
The fully thing about that is, if I change my username or password to be wrong, I get an "incorrect username/password" error, which tells me that it is actually connecting to the server but something more subtle is wrong.
We do use Exchange 10 at work and I did attempt the solution posed by this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821297
Nothing....same problem. Anybody else have experience with this? Any fix or suggestions floating around?
Thx!
Nick
I had the same problem. I ended up using "Improved Email" from the market - it looks a lot like the stock email app but has a few enhancements (and is free). Turned out (I think) that my corporate exchange server needed security settings that stock email didn't have (and acknowledged as such). Try that app or check out one of the other email apps if you prefer.
FYI - from my research I think this is a known issue with 2.2 and was fixed with 2.2.1.

Good to know - thx for the info Now I need to find a good basic 2.2.1 rom that isnt hacked to heck. Thats another post about that tho
Tried "Improved Email" but it didnt work either. Totally stumped our IT guys until I admitted it wasn't the standard Captivate ROM. They suggested I tried a program called Touchdown. It works but looks like total crap.
Oh well
I had a same problem when I flashed w/ Darky... I reflashed it and set up the email before I Ti restore... When Ti back up, unselect email restore... It works fine now... f
Just flashed to cog 3.0 and everything is working!
Slightly different exchange issue
I also recently took the plunge and flashed Cognition 2.3b8 (using the ODIN, one-click-download, master clear, ROM manager method). When setting up Exchange afterwards, I get the following error when trying to connect to the server:
Steup could not finish. This server requires security features your phone does not support.
Same result when trying to use the "Improved Email" app. I just re-flashed back to stock with ODIN and then installed Cognition 3.04, and I got the same error message when trying to connect to the Exchange Server with the stock app.
I know it's not the login credential--if I change them around I get a different error message telling me that I am using the incorrect username/password combination. I have also tried to set up the Exchange account before and after doing the Ti restore.
Has anyone else seen this particular error message with the Cog ROMs? Thanks in advance.
Hello,
There hasn't been a lot of action on this thread recently, but I just fixed my issue and I wanted to post it for people's reference.
Some background. Since the last post, I updated to Cog 3.04 and fixed my Android ID, both in the hopes of fixing the Exchange issue. They did not. At the suggestion of a friend, I tried installing Touchdown, a third party mail app made specifically to work with MS Exchange. It was in fact able to sync with the Exchange server, and I now have my work email, contacts, and calender on my cappy. Some complaints:
- No integration with stock calendar app (as near as I can tell)
- Pay version is $20, which is a little pricey (I'm working with the 30-trial version for now)
Other than that, it seems like a pretty slick app, probably an overall improvement over the stock mail app, but I'll have to play around with it in the coming days to have more of an opinion there. One improvement I noticed immediately: I can move messages between personal folders using Touchdown, which I was not able to do with the stock app. On a side note, Exchange contacts, unlike the calender, integrated just fine with the phone contacts.
In summary, I have no clue why this mail application succeeded in syncing with my company's Exchange server when the stock app could not. However, I wanted to get this out there as an option if anyone else is having similar issues after updating their Captivate to some flavor of 2.2.

[Q] Help with Yahoo email please?

I have just rooted my phone to Gingerbread, and I just LOVE it. I was able to set up the gmail accounts easily, so I have two separate gmail "labels" on my phone, each one for a different gmail account. I still cannot get the message count to show up on my notification bar, however, but that's not the reason for this post.
I am trying to do the same thing for my yahoo accounts (I have two of them). Yes, I can download the yahoo widget/app and that puts yahoo pretty much live on my phone - but I'm not looking for that. I'm looking for the shortcuts, like Gmail, so I can click on them and it takes me to a brief list of emails etc. I don't want to have full access to yahoo on my phone, but just the shortcuts.
When I try to set it up, this is what I do:
1) put a shortcut to the Email icon on my screen and name it.
2) When I try to configure it, I put my yahoo user name (xxx at yahoo.com) in and password
3) the message that comes up is "Mailbox access is not supported for some times of yahoo mail accounts" etc. I click on OK
4) it tells me setup could not finish as there is an incorrect username or password. I am 10000% certain I enter the correct name and password.
5) if I try a different yahoo email account, I get the same error message, plus (530 Access Denied: need SMTP privileges to access this server).
I used to have yahoo email shortcuts on my phone before I rooted - and they were great. I had two icons, and the message count showed up in my notification bar. When I rooted first (to I guess AOSP 9.9.2, before gingerbread), I could get the yahoo mail icons to work, no problem. I was not able to add an account in the "accounts and sync" - that only offers me "google" or "corporate" (which I guess is exchange). It's only with gingerbread i am having this problem.
I am VERY basic when it comes to using the phone, so if anyone responds, please pretend I'm about four years old, so please explain in basic language what I need to do. Anything complicated, and I might not follow (sorry). Still a newbie.
Thank you everyone.
This has been a problem for me on some roms too. Including aospCMod, some will let you set up a yahoo account and others will not. I first noticed this when I switched from cm6 to aospmod awhile back. Cm6 would let me sign in to a yahoo account but aosp would not. Then about 2 updates later on aospmod, I could all of a sudden sign in.
So this leads me to believe its an internal setting that the dev can modify to fix this. What it is idk, and when it'll come for or gingerbread roms idk, but take comfort in knowing your not the only one who has come across this.
Its kind of weird really, hopefully someone else knows why this happens out how to fix it.

Try using K9 mail, it is free in the market and much better than Yahoo mail app. I am sure you will be able to get emails and such, but not sure how much it will help with the other widget type problems.

Are you setting up manually or automatically. I've always had better luck setting up manually. If so you have to make servers say:
Smtp.mail.yahoo.com
IMAP..mail.yahoo.com

Finally - this worked doing it manually with these settings! Thanks!!
Unbelievable!!! Yes! It worked!
thank you thank you thank you THANK YOU!!!!!
did this manually and it worked like a charm! Thank you - hope it's OK if I go and post this on the android forum - a few people are having the same issues there. THANK YOU!
I tried this manually and it didn't work. Said it couldn't conner to the server.
Does the port need to be changed?
I must be doing something wrong if others are getting it to work.
edit: it tells me unable to open connection to server

My port says 143 but turn security is off if I remember. I will check when I get home from the second job.

Make sure you make it an imap account, security set to none, port should change to 143. If that doesn't get it let me know. Try auto setup too. I just deleted mine and started over and it took that way.

Just bear in mind I'm not on GB. Tried it and don't care for it. Sense has everything I need with half the apps to dl so it could be the build you're running.

Yahoo doesn't work any more :-(
Strange. yesterday, I set it up and it worked like a charm - IMAP and smtp, changed the server settings (did it all manually) - worked very well yesterday and today was working just fine. Hadn't checked my emails for a few hours though - just tried - and it tells now incorrect user name or password. I deleted it and tried to add the yahoo account again - first it tells me unable to open connection to server. Tried again (making sure all settings were correct) and it just says incorrect username or password.
Under IMAP server I have imap.mail.yahoo.com, port 143, security type none - exactly like I had it yesterday and this morning, and it doesn't work. incorrect username or password.
I haven't changed a THING with my phone - not a single thing - or downloaded any new apps - so I'm mystified. Thoughts anyone?
Thank you
