[Q] Inactive Note N7000. Need to install ROM - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note N7000, where my brother somehow crashed the stock OS or something. Anyway, it can't run its 2.3 Gingebread OS, it can run only on recovery mode.
All the posts that I've scoured through this site requires me too root my current OS first, & then start flashing, which is not(if I'm not mistaken) an option for me, since I can't run the phone's functions.
Is there any way for me to flash my phone starting from recovery mode? Thanks a lot in advance.
PS: In all the posts I've seen for the note, I have to copy the ROM to my phone first. Now, I've flashed my windows phone(Samsung i800 Omnia) countless times, but there, I had the ROM on my PC, not my phone, & I did not have to do anything on my phone beforehand. If I can do something similar with my note, I think I can manage it.

Can't you do a factory reset?

isn't factory reset done through settings? If so, It's impossible, since the OS does not run... If not, please tell me how. Thanks

Just checked on the net on how to do it... The phone isn't with me right now, but I should have it in my hands tomorrow. I'll try it & let you know. Thanks.
While we're at it, IS there a way for me to flash & install a new OS direct from the recovery mode? I don't want the stock OS with useless features hogging the RAM, I prefer a vanilla custom JB, or Kitkat OS.... Thanks

There's no safer wa than to flash a stock rom using odin first, then flash a safe kernel like philz with recovery, then you can flash custom roms that you want through recovery. You might want to direct flash philz recovery in stock recovery but since you don't know your build number, you might do damage to your phone instead.

A little help please :)

I have rooted and installed super SU on the galaxy note n7000.
Running ICS 4.0.4
Modem is XXLRK
Kernel is XXXLRK-CL811902
Build Number is XXLRK
Am i right in thinking that all i have to do is
- recovery Mode boot
- Jbroid Kernel Cleaner (original) flash jBroid_Kernel_Cleaning_Script_Ed-1.zip
- after that flash Abyss4.2 redpill
- reboot in Recovery (under Advanced )
- Wipe data/factory
- Wipe cache/dalvik
- flash Rom
I have all these files however when i go to recovery (which i think it hold, Home, Power and up on the phone.
It says stock recovery, so am i right in thinking that there is no CWM for the note? As the choices i have when in this recovery does not cover install from SD card?
So how would one flash something? Shall i rename it to update.zip???
Many thanks.

Thanks for the reply, and to answer your question i wouldn't know, but it is showing stock recovery, plus this isn't even my phone, i'm using a SGS3, which was a walk in the park, it appears that the note has gone through a very different route for the root / installing a custom rom process.
As it's not my phone i obviously don't want to pass him a paper weight back and say "Sorrrry i tried "
So with that in mind, i'm kinda hoping for bit of help.
But if it means downgrading and what not then i might just give it back to him.
Would be nice to get a win out of this though.
Just out of curiosity, why would you need to downgrade to GB to get CWM working on the note? Surely there must be a way from ICS? root and SU went on well, it's just i'm stuck now and there appears to be a lot of pit falls.
I found this guide but it's pretty vague http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360

first i am suggesting you as ics is dangerous and not 100% safe even with good kernels.
second yes there is a way for cwm recovery in ics and you need to follow the signatures of dr.ketan sir.
third as i hope the phone is rooted but not showing cwm,so that's why suggesting you to downgrade then upgrade to any custom rom.
fourth custom roms are not safe to flash right from ics.it is better to downgrade to pre-rooted gb rom then do that.

Tell you what, i'm giving him his phone back, this appears to be a pain in the backside, i appreciate your help but i think i'll leave it to him.
In all honesty i'd recommend everyone rooting their own phone anyway as if something goes wrong then they'll know where they're up to when they want to fix it.

[Q] weird bug. need expert advice + solution

Today I tried to update my phone to a new custom rom.
I followed the instructions of the threads and tried to get it to work.
Of course it didn't work or else I wouldn't be here right now asking for help.
Here's the current situation.
I am able to boot into download mode + recovery mode and also boot into cwmr and install a different kernel.
I used pc odin to install it each time and it does pass and the rom (i've tried installing a gingerbread rom so that I can try everything again) does install.
the problem is that it is currently stuck in a boot loop at the "Samsung galaxy note gt-N7000" screen.
I have looked up dr.ketan's posts and tried some too.
currently i am booting abyss note kernel 42cwt touch original. (I know for sure it is a workable kernel because I've been using it this whole time.
here's what i've done. please tell me what i've done wrong and the possible ways to reverse it.
1. backed up everything
2. went into recovery
3. factory reset/cache clear
4. use pc odin to install new kernel (since I was looking into switching to another kernel anyways)
5. use pc odin again to install gingerbread rom (I do get the green light saying it did get installed
6. phone auto reboots
7. it gets stuck at the boot loop like i have mentioned above
i will try to attach a few pictures of my note as soon as I can so you can see what's going on with it.
What rom is there on the phone now ? if you boot into recovery .. what recovery do you get now ? CWM or stock ardroid 3e recovery ?

Right now it reboots to 3e recovery.
The rom that I tried to inject to it is currently a the stock gingerbread rom from dr. Ketans thread.
The rom that I had on it is the official ics rom for the hk region.
The rom that I wanted to inject to it was a custom jb rom that uses hydracore as a kernel.
Thanks!!
try installing a prerooted Gb rom or an ICS stock rom using PC odin.. if you choose ICS, after flash install a safe kernel..

If I do a stock ics update can I just do it through kies or do I have to do it through pc odin? Also. Would abyss or hydracore considered as a safe kernel???
yes if kies can do it then good but at this situation i dont think. its better to use PC odin for now. yes both are safe kernels

I've tried your suggestions...and it didn't seem to work out too well.
I am able to flash to different kernels and get in and out of different recovers and such, but ya...still no luck with running a rom.
Well I am not sure but I soft bricked my phone when I tried that Abyss Kernel. In my view Hydracore is safe. Philz is super safe.
Flash ICS which matches your region using Odin. If phone boots flash Philz, If not, then be ready to read a lot of stuff or get phone repaired.

Hey guys. my note seems to have cooperated and allowed me to flash a new rom and also a new kernel. Here's the catch though, now it's stuck in the samsung logo and won't boot beyond that. Any suggestions of what to do? I am continually searching on the forums to find a solution.
At least I'm happy to know it's not a brick that can't be fixed.
Thanks nokiamodeIn91 for your help so far. I really appreciate it.
which rom did you flash and which kernel? how?
He spent a lot of time helping you. Be sure to hit thanks button

I currently flashed the abyss note kernel 42 cw touch and I downloaded an old gb rom from sammobile .
Here's what I did.
1. Put my phone into download mode
2. Run as admin on PC Odin
3. Selected the Abyss kernel then flashed it.
4. Boot into the cmw, wiped cache then booted the phone into download mode again.
5. Then I installed the old GB Rom on to my phone and restarted it.
6. Phone starts, loads past the GT-N7000 logo and goes into the samsung boot logo.
7. Phone repeats the animation of the samsung logo a time or two then restarts on its own. This loops until the phone is completely drained. I know that the rom works because that was the rom that I used to root my phone. I definitely don't mind downloading another rom if I have to.
my current goal, if we can fix this, is to quickly just update to the official jb rom for n7000 and not play around with the rooting and such until I have even more time to learn more.
at least I know for sure my phone isn't hardbricked, I would imagine I have either missed a step or something that caused the problem.
I have read through the forum and I did come across one post talking about checking my phone's partition and such.
I got to be honest, I'm really not technically skilled enough at this point in time to dare to mess around with that type of thing yet especially with so much coding to make sense of it. (I know this is kind of dumb to say especially when I rooted my phone and screwed up this bad). More importantly, I don't even know for sure if I need to do a partition or not.
Please let me know what I did wrong and how I can fix it.
I got a question though (out of curiosity), how come there's no toolkit for the n7000 like the S3 and also the note 2???
this is the name of the old gb rom that I tried flashing.
N7000ZSKJ6_N7000OZSKJ6_N7000XXKJ6_HOME.tar
I actually have tried several other roms as well (from GB-JB, official and custom) and all of them so far has gotten to the samsung boot logo
I have read on the forums to try using Philz-cwm 6 kernel but I don't know if it'd solve my problem.
let me show you one of the threads I have read, if I dived into the wrong material let me know and I won't consider using it (or learn how to use it) for my current situation
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1661590&highlight=samsung+logo+bootloop&page=2
like I was saying before, I really have no experience in coding so all the things that really made near no sense to me. I understand the basic concept of what its trying to do it's just seems like a very unsafe method for me to try especially when I lack the necessary knowledge in this area of expertise.
did you flash the GB rom using the standard PIT file ?
also you could try with the 5 file flashing method from this thread

Galaxy note N7000 bricked?

Hi guys,
I am just wondering what happened to my Galaxy note N7000, long story short. When you try to power on the phone it goes to it's welcome screen which is the "samsung galaxy n7000" screen however it doesn't go to the samsung logo which is supposed to. It just turns black as if it was turned off.
I can go to recovery. Tried, wipe cache partition and factory reset to no luck.
I would really appreciate if someone guide through it.
Did you try to flash a stock rom using odin? What is the recovery you have? If it's cwm then did you try to flash a custom rom?

thanks for the quick reply. Actually no. I was playing with the app, "pimp my rom" then it required me to reboot the phone, so I did. The problem started. Now as for the recovery. it looks like it's PhilZ Touch 5. CWM base version: 6.0.3.3
It seems like you have a messed up system partition. What rom were you on?

I guess you are right about that.. Sorry I would really love to provide you what specific ROM I was in but I really can't check it now. I remember that I am on 4.1.2 JB though (if that would help), is there a way that we can install a new rom instead?
I would like to ask as well if this is considered as bricked?
If you have a stock rom download already, then boot into recovery, choose clean before new rom install, reboot download, connect to odin and flash the new rom.
If you want to go for a custom rom, then download that. Connect phone to pc in recovery, choose mount usb storage, place the rom zip file in to phone storage, choose clean before new rom install, then install zip.

New here, a little help please? :)

Hello there!
I'm new in this section of XDA. And I'm a bit confused. There are many different threads how to root etc.
What order am I supposed to do things in?
In my previous section, the order was something like:
1. Root phone
2. Unlock bootloader
3. Flash kernel
4. Enter CWM and flash custom rom
Thanks in advance!

you shouldnt flash kernel before rom. because some kernels are not competitable with some roms. Roms comes with kernels anyway.
1. you should root your phone
2. install TWRP ( its used by most ROMs atm., its easier if you want to use CM or Omni or etc.) some apps in market helps to install TWRP and etc. ( Rashr if i remmember correct.)
3. Flash which ROM you want to ( but i suggest first make a nandroid backup in case things go wrong.) a.)go in recovery whipe data/system/dalvik/dalvik cache
b.) flash your rom from sd card.( zip file)
c.) flash gapps after you flash your rom.
d.) wipe dalvik and dalvik cache and reboot and youre good to go.
4. if you want to use different kernel which your ROM comes with. you can flash your kernel after your rom.
You can also flash your rom with odin. its easier and you can find how to flash with odin and when you flash with odin, you will also have recovery anyway and mostly ROMs comes with root after you flash. ( You should root your phone like go in recovery and flash supersu. if you going to use OmniRom as it not comes with root.)
hope it may help tho.

oh after you install TWRP, you can install latest supersu zip from xda, and you can flash it to your phone and then you will have root, or there are some programs for one click root for samsung s3 mini, but not sure, didnt try them. but people say they are working good.
and yea, you flash your kernel after you flash your ROM, you can check in kernel parts and see if they are working with your rom and then you can flash it.

yes when you are installing a new ROM follow that guide. its pretty well written and it is definitely correct, just before you do anything and wipe any data. go to back up and make a nandroid back up to be safe. then you can restore it if anything goes wrong.
About kernel, you will do the same like rom. when you install your new rom and gapps just reboot your phone after you check around a bit and then flash kernel zip like how you installed your rom. just do not wipe anything and here are some kernels people use in samsung s3 mini.

I think these files are only going on I9070 phone. I'm not sure that will be fine on i9070p.
If I'm wrong, someone correct me.

Oh yeah great suggestion
Tomorrow i prepare ODIN and flash the latest official rom. After that from stock recovery i thinks i can flash the root.zip for root access....... using flashify for installing recovery and after that finally installed this 10.2 and after that install the kernel here.
I thinks it's not the best solution...... but it's but it's better than nothing I need only to use this i9070 only for emergency or backup smartphone

This is the right order for me after Odin;
in recovery: wipe, flash update.zip, flash mkkernel zip, flash root.zip and then custom rom + gapps.
I don't flash kernel on custom rom. You know that you need it or not. I think that's unnecessary. I would rather flashing kernel before flashing custom rom.
