[Q] Z1 Not powering down!!! - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
I own a Z1 C6903 running KitKat 4.4.2 not rooted and locked BL
A couple of days into installing the KitKat update, I gave the phone to my dad who borrowed it until a week ago. He noticed that when holding down the power button and select the power off option, the click yes to shut-down thingy didn't pop up so the phone has never been switched off for over a month. The phone also ran extreeeemely slow with camera app on 4.3 loading in less than a second but now taking over ten seconds simply to load the app, 5 seconds to open up the camera and crashes out all the time. Free RAM has dropped from around 1GB free to less than 500mb at times. I used the repair option in PC Companion which worked so the phone could switch off and the phone ran smoothly (I used Helium Backup to backup my apps before doing the 'Repair' on PC Companion) until the next day where it had the same issue. The camera now just won't load at all and I'm stuck. Free RAM is less than 200mb. Bearing in mind I'm not rooted and running bone dry stock, what can I do to fix this? I need a working phone fast.

Hard reset it by pressing volume up and power button until it vibrates 3 times.
Or, press the red button in the SIM card slot
But, tbh, I wish I had the problem that my phone would not switch off for a month, that's awesome battery life!

Hard reset also powers the phone down right? If so, I tried that yesterday still exactly the same. And what does the red button do?
Also, yes the battery life is pretty spectacular, I get a full 1-3 days running on 4G but only around 2 hours screen time; I guess thats why

The hard reset does not power off your phone?
You should not get a dialogue box, just press and hold volume up and power button. Once it vibrates 3 times the phone is off. Are you sure the phone stays on when it vibrates 3 times?

Just done that again, I must have done it wrong last time but when powering back on, still the same, can't switch off through the power menu and everything still slow. If this helps, before on 4.3 and early days with 4.4, after powering down (through power menu) once switched back on the phone was smoother and more free RAM was available. That doesn't happen when powering down using the hard reset. A friend suggested that maybe an app is blocking the phone from powering down and eating up RAM? That does make sense as the problem started again shortly after re-installing my apps through Helium Backup...

Flash a stock FTF and restore one app at a time and see which app makes this happen.

Ok
However, seeing as this is a rather lengthy process (last time I was doing it from 5pm till 11pm!) I'll have to do that on the weekend...I will do this but if anyone has another suggestion, please share!

Why would it take you so long last time? Is there no batch restore in that app?
Also, you can always take a nandroid backup, then do an advanced restore and choose the data partition only to restore all apps and settings with just one click....

It took ages because I had to transfer all my files off my internal storage
How do I make a nandroid backup without CWM?!

My apologies, I forgot you were not rooted (Is there any reason you don't want to root?). Also, transfering from internal storage should not take 6 hours....

I had the same issue, that the phone wasn't shutting down.
It was because of corrupted data (after update).
Wiping data should fix that problem.

When you have the world's slowest laptop then it does, , I had to remove everything from my external sd to my laptop then transfer internal storage to my external card as my laptop wouldn't allow me to do this on it so I had to do it from the phone directly and then restore internal storage and external sd (that's 29GB used) but I don't want to root because it'll void warranty and also as my dad also uses this phone occasionally and I've killed off most of my phones by rooting them and in one case bricking them, he doesn't want me to root it...

Yeah.
I switched to antoher ROM and restored data and after some while I've noticed that it wan't shutting down.
You said that You've tried repairing Your phone, but if the data hasn't been wiped then nothing will change.
So, If You haven't tried wiping data until now, then do it. (if You have a rooted device then You always might do a nandroid & titanium backup.)
Wiping data is a basic thing when changing to another ROM, because there always might be an issue with something, like for example this powering off device.
One more question, can You open input languages menu in the settings (this was a second problem I had after ROM change, it forced close)?

screen freezes when i wake my phone

Ever since i manually updated to frf91 sometimes when i try to wake my phone my screen freezes an i can't unlock it also when i try to power my phone back on it will vibrate 7 times an it wont come on. I guts take the battery out an put it back it to get my phone to turn back on. I've never had this problem until i manually updated my phone. I did a factory reset an it helped for a while but the problems come back. Has anyone had this problem an does anyone know how i can fix this? I'd really appreciate any help i can get
Help please
Is the bootloader unlocked?
this seems to be a common issue with FRF91, although most people's phones will unfreeze after a minute or two, does your backlight turn on and off when you press the power button?

whether it unfreezes after a minute or two depends on what it's doing..there have been many times where i have to pull battery...........

ya i have had to as well but most of the time it wakes just fine
No my bootloader is not unlocked an yea the backlight will come on but it won't unlock. Ive never tried waitin a min to see if it fixes itself i just usually pull the battery when it happens an sometimes when i try to turn my phone back on it does the 7 vibrating thing. Like i said before it never happened until frf91
I have an app called AutoKiller installed. It tweaks the Android system's inner memory management routines. it was set to something other than default. I changed it back to default, and haven't had a problem since. if you have this installed, maybe try and switch it to default settings.
Sounds like a data issue. A factory reset only wipes user data, You must wipe in recovery to wipe rom data. Also make sure you have the correct radio for the build especially coming from lower build. If that's the issue flash radio first to support the build. Then flash the rom.

How do u wipe in recovery? Yea im a newb lol
Also if i wipe in recovery will i still be on 2.2 or will i have to update to it again?

Phone keeps shutting down

Today my 4X encountered a strange problem: It shut down itself (I thought the battery was empty and charged it), and after restarting it just shuts down immediately. It shows the lockscreen saying "no SIM" and then shuts down. Anyone know a solution to fix this? I suppose a factory reset might do it, but I don't have a backup now and would like to keep my data.

If it is the SIM then try a different SIM, or put a folded piece of paper between the holder and the SIM - I always do that with phones just to make sure it keeps good contact at all times.
Other than that, no real idea mate - sorry
I think it should also work without a SIM. But as said, it just shows the lockscreen for ~2 seconds and then shuts down. I have tried without a sim, it's the same. I'll try with a different one, but I suppose that won't help much. I think i'll also try a kdz reflash, but i'll have to set up my father's PC to do so. Just thought maybe someone knows a quick solution.
Alright, i've just done a kdz reflash - same situation. Is there a way to adb pull the /data/data from any of the other modes (recovery, Emergency etc.?)

Weird... Reflash use to replace all files and stock settings unless you have some app avoiding them to run... Reflash don't delete installed apps most part of the time. If you have frozen apps they'll remain frozen. Did you factory reset before reflash?

No, as said i wanted to try everything before doing a factory reset (don't have a recent backup because Ubuntu won't recognize the MTP mode properly). I have restarted the phone many times before without that strange behaviour and didn't freeze anything since then. I just can't tell where the problem comes from. BTW, the SIM is recognised now (after the reflash), but still shutting down.

You notice some over heat, you try to use it without SD card, it keeps rebooting when charger is connected?...
Cause appart of hardware malfunction, I can't see any other reason... of course we don't know if the system file is corrupted or not...
If the phone is ON time enough, you can copy the data files/ folders to your SD card, after save them all you can factory reset...
Wait for better help cause I have no idea... sorry

It's not because of heat, the phone is really cool. It just stays on for a second or so, just enough to see the lockscreen or the "Enter PIN" screen and then it shuts down. It's like the battery was empty, but it's charged. It even shows the charged battery symbol. Guess I'll have to do a factory reset and lose my data. As root is gone, I also can't boot to the bootstrap recovery (with this method) to backup there. Should have done that before doing a reflash...

You can try to downgrade before factory reset... some apps won't work but, maybe the phone just don't turn OFF and you'll be able to save your data.
So downgrading didn't work either. I'll use the LG Support Tool to upgrade and factory reset now (with data loss). That should hopefully fix it.
Well, the LG Support tool also didn't fix it. Data is lost now, so I can freely do whatever I want
I've tried to get into the "low-level mode" (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35524491&postcount=11), but no success. Can someone point me into the right direction and on how to press those buttons? I've tried several combinations, but they all didn't work out - either the battery symbol appeared or the phone booted to recovery or to the "do not touch cable notice" mode.
As far as I understand I should do the following steps:
1) Remove the battery and USB cable
2) Insert the battery and plug in the cable. The phone vibrates once, then shows the LG logo, then shows a battery symbol and then turns off the screen.
3) Press Vol+ and power and hold it. The battery logo shows again. There is a sound indicating that some device is connected to Windows. The screen turns off and there is a sound indicating that the device is disconnected from Windows. Let go off the buttons.
4) Press the buttons again until there is a sound indicating that a device is connected to Windows. Let go off the buttons. The screen should remain off.
Is this correct? What am I doing wrong? Do I have to wait at some point for some action? As said, all I ever got was the "battery symbol" again (for a few seconds).

Once that data is gone, just reflash the phone.
My advice, like always is, downgrade, factory reset, upgrade , root, factory reset.
hope you don't tell me that you have problems with flash method...
I have tried that. Flashed v10a, wiped data in recovery, upgraded to v10h via LG Support Tool. Still shutting down. I thought the emergency recovery might fix it but I cant get the emergency mode to work. I'll call the LG support tomorrow and hope they'll bring me a new phone.

If when you're flashing, you use "web upgrade" instead of normal upgrade, it will upgrade with LG Tool, official firmware, what it means that is the same than the emergency recovery that you're trying to use.
The difference is that you don't need to use IMEI. The detection is automatic.

Thanks, I thought the Emergency Recovery was still different. So no chance to fix this now. LG's support won't work on Christmas, so three more days stuck with it.
I got the phone back today. Put the battery in, started, and... it shut down. AGAIN. They were supposed to fix that! Anyone near me who has a spare battery for testing? After all that might be faulty.

It goes down when charger is connected?
Yes, it does. And it recognises the battery as full, that's why I don't suppose it's because of that. But one never knows.
mines done it a couple times recently too! just living with it till the update!
Problem solved. A new battery did the trick. But I still don't know why it would shut down with the old one.

[Q] rebooted jellybean now left with screwdriver and spanner icon

hi there
after successfully installing the JB updated on my unlocked phone and all was running fine for a while
that is until I rebooted it this morning, now the stupid thing wont start. I am stuck at the triangle iconwith the screwdirver and spanner, and the 'progress' bar below..
clearly it is not progressing as it been like that for over an hour now
also tried clearing cahce/dalvik to no avail
any options here or do I have to ftf my way back to ICS?
any help very much appreciated
thanks

You just need to format your internal sd card and all should be fine, it's a fairly common issue

actually I had left it alone for an hour or so and it seems to have come back to life again..
although it has lost my security settings and all the haptic feedback has turned itself back on again
lost my swiftkey settings also it seems
piece of shizzle
EDIT: in fact it refuses to keep any security settings at all, no lock screen nothing.
lost all my texts everything, f*cking cr*p
walkman isnt working either
wondering why i bothered upgrading cant actually see any difference really other than a more colorful boot image. hoping that the battery life will improve as that is rubbish - I know it takes a while to settle.

No No No don't format anything. That would make you loose all data and apps. Let it be. It will fix itself. Could take between 5 minutes and 3 hours. It is not an error or a problem or anything. Its just getting ready.
But if you really really need it to boot, yes you can format internal.

I don't know why it screwed up your settings buddy maybe due to a small flashing error. Flash again and you will see the difference in the upgrade. Battery life is amazing. I can get two days if i switch off data, and 1.5 days with data always on. Plus multitasking is smoother and the camera has HDR, the Xperia Z's ClearAudio+ engine, notification toggles, a sexy new Album, blah blah. You'll find out.
Oh and you did the right thing by letting it be with the white triangle sign.

its an Xperia T I have in case that wasn't clear...
so I installed it from a zip in the end, rather than an ftf as flashtool was playing sillybuggers.
I should just go in to recovery and do so again? presumably along with the JB GApps
like I say it was working fine after the first time I did that, but when I turned it off this morning it went all manky
I would however like to keep some of my settings for the apps that havent already had their settings raped.. is titanium the best way to do that? or to move things to SD card and reinstall or something
also home button not functioning- at all
the no screen lock is a big issue as I have my work emails on there - if I lost my phone I would really get in trouble

Most the app stuff is on /data not /sdcard so you'll be fine, some of the data made by apps will be in /sdcard/android but there isn't much there as most is in /data/data so if you backup /sdcard/android you'll be fine, you may as well backup your whole sdcard and format, that's the solution I used and most people have been using. If in doubt use titanium backup to also backup your apps if you're unsure

I believe the best way is to use a ftf file with flashtool. I have not tried any zipped roms. They might be faulty. And Titanium Backup is the app to use to backup apps. Moving things to SD card is useless as they will be removed when you install a new rom. Always make sure you do a full wipe when you flash a new rom, and flash the kernel before flashing the rom.

[Q] Xperia Z1 stuck on black screen on start

So my brand new 24 hour old Xperia Z1 will not start and only goes to a blank screen with the backlight on. It does show the SONY splash screen before this for a second.
The only way to shut it down is to do an up volume and on button combo or to hit the red reset button.
I've tried starting with the SIM and SD Card out but it doesn't seem to make a difference.
The phone has pretty much not been used at all so I am a bit shocked. Is there any thing I can try? It was working last night.
24 hours out of the box, just send it back for a new one.
even if its starts working again, for a £600 device I would just send it back and say you are not happy and want a new one

I went off and left it for about 10 minutes and it did finally restart. I suppose there is some sort of software conflict issue going on.
I did a factory wipe and it runs like lightning now. No idea which app is causing the conflict.

This is one of the fastest phones on the market and this shouldn't be happening. After I did my restore I set up again and synched and auto-updated apps and I had the same problem. I then tried deleting all of my uploaded apps one by one until they were all gone but this didn't help and the boot times were still about 5 minutes, often with the phone booting without remembering the brightness setting or even not booting at all.
So I did a factory reset again but this time did not account synch on setup or auto update apps and that seems to have fixed it for me. The phone is very fast and boots in under 30 seconds now, and runs without any lag whatsoever. I wish I could identify specifically what the issue is but so far no luck.

phone died, turns on, but no display ?

Hello everyone,
I have a moto x xt1092. I flashed the us firmware and converted it to xt1095. all has been running perfect for 3 weeks or so. Today, my battery was low and the phone died. after about 10 mins I put it on charging, let it charge till the battery was 15%. I turn it on, the phone does turn on, all boot animations and all come, but after the motorola boot animation the display goes blank. I press and hold the power button, the option of turning the phone off comes up, nothing else. This has happened twice before, and after 5-10 mins the display starts working normally. But now, it isnt. PLease help me with the same.
ALso, the phone is getting very hot at every boot.
I have tried wiping the caches.
Flashing the firmware again is my last resort cuz i do not want the data deleted.
Thank you for your time
There is only one way to fix this. You have to factory reset the phone.
If you have a custom recovery installed you can use it to backup your files before you factory reset the phone.

I flashed the firmware again. It is working fine now though I lost the apps and their data. Also, an idea what may have caused this, so I take precautions from next time?

Almost every time I have seen the problem someone says "my battery died". So my suggestion is to hold your power button when your battery is super low and then press power off to shut it down safely. It's just like a computer if the battery dies while the computer is in use it can cause damage.
