[Q] Relocking Bootloader, kernel, updating and more! - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I'm on Central Europe 1 4.4.2, with doomlord kernel and root. I have a backup of my TA partition before unlocking bootloader.
I want to update to Central Europe 1 4.4.4, using the flashable zip that was posted and the stripped ftf.
Should I flash the stock kernel from FTF 4.4.2, restore my TA partition backup and update? Or update to 4.4.4, and after that restore my TA?
What are the bricking risks? Should I wipe everything? :crying: SO MANY DOUBTS

Why relock?
Just update by flashing the file

If you want to go to totally "out of the box" device and have OTA update info and few other things you just said then yeah...
First flash ftf and stick kernel and then relock bootloader...
If you restore TA and leave custom kernel you could have serious problems...

Just finished flashing 4.4.4 and stripped ftf without wipe or anything. omg I'm trembling lmao

No, there is no serious problem at all, you just need to flash a stock kernel via flashtool (In a stripped FTF or a full FTF) or via fastboot if you have the kernel.elf

So everything went smooth! Now i'm on 4.4.4 with root and locked bootloader BUT x-reality is not working LMAO. I'll try to install it now.
Edit: yep, it's definitely not working. I relocked bootloader for nothing! haha

Exactly what I said..
You have to flash stock kernel - there are many guys who relock bootloader on custom kernel - xda us full of stories like that..
They have toy now instead of expensive device..
Sent from my D6503 using Tapatalk

No, it's very easy to fix, just flash a stock kernel after relocking the bootloader, it does not brick the phone relocking in a custom kernel, it just gives you a boot loop which is easily fixable

[Q] Help with Reverting/Relocking

So I installed CM10.2 on my phone. For that I had to root and unlock my bootloader. I didn't really like it to be honest so I decided that I wanted to go back to stock rom, the problem however, is that i'm not sure how I should do this. I made a backup of my TA Partition so I also could get my DRM keys (Bravia Engine, etc) back. I don't know what I should do first and I was wondering if there is someone who could help me through this process. Do I first need to flash stock kernel, then flash stock ftf, and then install that TA backup in order to relock my bootloader? But I thought I needed root for this, if I flash a stock ftf then root will be gone right? So many questions
Thank you in advance

Thank you for your response but this is only relocking etc. My problem is that I don't know in what order I should do things. So far I think I should do it like this (but i'm not sure, so i'm asking for someone to tell me if it's wrong) : 1. Simply flash a stock ftf (with the ftf the stock kernel will be installed too, right?) 2. Relock bootloader 3. Then apply the TA Backup to get the DRM Keys back.
Is this the right order to do things? Will I make an expensive brick out of it if I do it like that?
Flash a stock FTF and root it (or flash a pre-rooted stock based ROM through recovery ). Then restore TA, which will automatcally lock bootloader and restore DRM keys

How can I root my xz 4.3? (give me easy way)
Sent from my C6602 using xda app-developers app
1. Unlock your bootloader.
2. Flash DooMLoRD's advanced stock kernel.
3. Flash a superuser zip.
There is currently no way to root with a locked bootloader.
Also, questions belong in the q&a section, not general.

well, in superSU menu, its name is survival mode...which says it will try to keep root permission EVEN in ota. so I guess it's not ONLY for ota.
It won't help when flashing with Flashtool as /system is wiped, so the backup the survival mode makes is wiped also. I've tried before.

I'm using 4.3 with locked bootloader. Do not miss lead people.
You just need a rooted device with recovery option.
There are at least two topic for this.

Nobody is misleading anybody. There is no way to root with a locked bootloader after you have already flashed 4.3.
Flashing a prerooted rom from a previous, already rooted rom with recovery is a different matter and is not what the original question in the OP is asking.
Sent from my C6603 using Tapatalk
Unlocking bootloader means, wipe all user data, that means more and more trouble to configure al settings and applications.
Just root your older firmware, install dual recovery, and install stock cwm firmware as mentioned in other topics.
Thats all, you have proper rooted and updated versions.

The OP is obviously on 4.3 already.
Downgrading to an older firmware usually requires that you wipe /data anyway.
The OP didn't ask how to upgrade and keep root. They asked how to root 4.3, therefore my original post is currently the only correct answer to the question in the first post.
Sent from my C6603 using Tapatalk
So, lets make a conclusion here.
1- if you have already upgraded to 4.3 you have 2 choices; unlock bootloader and use doomlord kernel, OR downgrade to 4.2.2 and go to part 2.
2- if you have not upgraded to 4.3 yet, you can use a pre-rooted stock 4.3 rom (link of them can be found in this thread) and flash it using recovery and flashtool.
Sent from my C6602 using Tapatalk
If you haven't upgraded, there's a third option. Backing up of the TA partition, flashing new firmware either from ftf, Seus or PCC and then unlocking bootloader, temporarily flashing custom kernel, rooting, flashing stock kernel again and relocking bootloader via TA partition restore.
Takes more time, but its the cleanest way to have 4.3 with root I think.

Or you can wait for OTA release and turn on survival mode of superSU. As SuperSU says, it's NOT guaranteed that root permission will be kept. But if you have patience to wait for OTA release, it worth trying.

Sent from my C6603 using xda app-developers app
Installing any pre rooted rom requires a recovery which means the user has to have had a rooted device in the first place with a recovery installed. Even if root is lost and a recovery exists a pre rooted rom can be flashed. The links provided above are perfectly fine.

You have 2 options
A . stay away from boot loader (0 Risk):
1- backup your SD data & All SD contents to your computer ( I Think it is not that hard)
2-Flash 4.2.2 with flash tool
3-Root on locked boot loader follow instructions here
4- Install Dual Recovery follow HERE
5- Install 4.3 Pre-rooted from here
****************
Option B.(not recommended if you have not enough experience )
1-Back TA (boot loader ) Here
2-Unlock boot loader Here
3- Root using this method HERE
4-Flash 4.3 pure stock Kernel (Kernel only )
5- Restore your TA (lock boot loader again with all benefits )

Restoring TA backup = relocking the booloader
I don't think there is any other way to relock the bootloader, so how would you like to relock it?
Thanks for the reply I was going to use Flashtools to relock it. Cause of the camera issue I thought locking bootloader and restoring TA where completely separate from each other.
Also if you don't mind I'm on 4.3 unlocked with DooMKernel v4 and want to flash stock kernel how do I do that and where do i get. A guide on xda said if I want to relock I had to flash stock kernel.sin using Flashtool I don't know how to do that all I is how to flash a kernel using fastboot which requires me to have the .sin file which I don't know where to get it.

The stock kernel is inside the ftf of the firmware, so just select the firmware in flashtool and on the right hand-side you will see a list of contents of the ftf that you are about to flash (system.sin , userdata.sin, kernel.sin and so on) . Exclude anything that you don't need to flash under the exclude tab.
Just a word of advise, make sure you relock the bootloader on the same version of the firmware that you made the backup on. So if you backup up TA on 4.2.2 relock it on 4.2.2. There seem to be some people that have had issues when they tried to relock on the newer firmware.

If you have an unlocked bootloader, you will not be able to update using PC Companion. I didnt know all this **** were involved in Sony phones.
I had unlocked my bootloader a couple of days back, didnt know I had to backup my DRM keys and ended up losing my warranty. Now I cant even update my phone using the official updating method.
BTW... the recovery is bundled with the kernel, thats why people refer to it as flashing a kernel instead of recovery. I didnt know this until 2 days back.
Thanks

If I am on a Locked Bootloader and on a rooted custom ROM, will Sony PC Companion detect my phone when the next update comes??
This is stupid. If you are in 4.3 (.290) with un-locked boot loader you cant update via PC companion or SUS.
I ended up going to 534 (4.2) via flashtool. Root it, restore TA backup and then use SUS to update. And flashing the latest 4.3 via Flashtool din work.
No PC Companion or SUS won't detect your phone.. You've to manually flash a valid ftf from Flashtool.. Then you can connect & update your phone through PC Companion or SUS..
