So this is driving me crazy, and I'm not sure if it's a hardware problem or a software problem. Hopefully someone could give me some insight.
So about 2 months ago I installed CM 11 on my Droid 4 and it was my first time doing a custom ROM on an android device. I was extremely satisfied with the results of this as it improved my phone to a well optimized 4.4.2 and making my phone significantly faster compared to stock.
However, for the past 2-3 weeks my phone has become a completely broken mess. For starters the phone gave me strange battery statistics. When turned off and plugged in, the phone would read as 100%, but when I booted in CM 11 the battery would be at 60% and would every so often the phone would jump from 60% to about 15% in literally seconds. The phone shuts down during usage constantly, usually when the battery reads at <60%. Before it does so "Android System" would open up on the screen and immediately close then the phone will read "Shutting down..." sometimes doing so immediately after the boot screen. This became very infuriating so I loaded up stock to see if the same problem occurs. Sure enough, it did. However, before shutting down, the phone would keep going into cooldown mode multiple times. Sometimes it would cool down for only a few seconds, sometimes it would be in cooldown mode for up to 2-3 mins. With that information could someone please tell me what I can do? Do I need a new battery or a new ROM? or do I need a new phone all together? Thanks in advance.
Hi,
I have recently encountered this myself on stock ROM. The past few days were very hot and my Droid 4 shut down after going into cooldown mode when I used it for multiple tasks at the same time (browsing, bluetooth, music, etc.). It wouldn't even turn back on until it cooled down. My money is on the battery, I'm planning to swap it out tomorrow and let you know how it goes.

Could be battery, but I would reinstall ROM first.
If you want can try just ROM install, no data wipe, no gapps.

It should be worth noting that once i started to notice the problem, I thought it was an issue in the latest snapshot for CM 11. It made sense as I had recently installed it. So I wiped the rom slot clean and went from M7 back to M6 and the problem still occurred.

I swapped the battery this morning, I have 1-2 lying around just in case.
I charged it to full and noticed that the device was not as hot during charging than before.
After this, I did some browsing and run a full AnTuTu benchmark and the Droid remained fairly cool.
So I think it's safe to say that it's the battery that tends to overheat the device.
I was on stock ROM.

Thx for looking into it for me. I just threw down $30 on a new battery over amazon. So I'll let you know if it works once I get it.
Update: Just installed the new battery. Gonna leave it on the charger and await further results.
Update 2: The new battery is working great so far. Only got it to as low as 50% as of now so can't say it's a perfect fix just yet.

Good to hear it! I used mine for a full day, I'm not saying the device is freezing cold now, but feels cooler and no shutdowns due to heat. Also seems like that some applications tend to heat things up better than others (TuneIn and UC Browser for example). Anyway, let's hope this prolong the life of our phones, I would hate to be without the keyboard.

It seems my android system is destroying my battery , it is always at the top of the list with display usually coming in well under. This screen shot was taken with very little use today. I upgraded the battery to the andida 1980 mah battery and I have been using juice defender ultimate and I do get a few more hours out of the device but the android system is still the largest drain. any ideas or suggestions would be great.

Welcome to the club. I charge mine twice a day at least.
Dude, no kidding. I charge mine 2-3 times daily, plus the whole time driving to and from work. Android eats normally 50-60% of my battery. Sadly, I still love it. Plus I work for at&t selling these things. I tried the 3500mah battery, but I hate having a naked phone.
I'm not sure what I'm doing different but my android system is at 30-39%
sent from my Lg Thrill running Thriller. Using the XDA app.
They say it's some sort of system glitch but no one knows the cause. I'm running Thriller which is amazing. Much better than stock. These phones have a lot of potential.
Change the Launer, try Launcherpro, after installing the launche reboot and see.
After a ton of research this is what I've found. I think its the answer as to why the battery is getting drained, but there doesn't seem to be a fix. I installed Juice Defender which has throttled my OS from coming on and leeching the internet whenever it feels like it. Sometimes I get cell standby, phone idle and display above android OS, which is a god send.
I found this out using Battery history and Betterbatterystats.
The main culprit seems to be the Suspend command. Google knows about this issue and LG had to of known but they released Froyo on the Thrill anyway.
Issue 11126
I use watchdog to monitor mine. At first I set it to alert me if it ever went above 30% which should be way to much but I got it so often I decided to move it up to 50% to give it a little extra time to "suspend" my phone. I get less alerts now so it must be working eventually but I've had it alert me at 80% before...suspend....using 80% processing power to put my phone to sleep?!?!? Thats rediculous. So you go into the "partial wake" section of betterbattery and battery history and you find out that the main culprit of keeping your phone awake and fighting "suspend" is either the "dialer" or "datatracker". Dialer seems to encompass anything that uses the internet but I could be wrong so that one is pretty broad. DataTracker turns out is your Fast Dormancy. There are many threads on the internwebs that tell you how to disable fast dormancy as its more of a neusance than usefull if the carrier isn't tuned right for it but none of these seemed to work for me so for now I'm stuck letting dialer and FD fight Suspend and just catching it when I can with Watchdog. Gingerbread can't come soon enough and hopefully its a version that fixes this as many users in the "issue" thread were using GB.
I lost tons of sleep over this and the only thing I could do was install Juice Defender. I hate depending on a 3rd party app to control and throttle everything on my phone but so far I still get all my push emails fairly instantly and really don't even notice its there, I still just hate the idea of it. but, for now it works. Yesterday I was at 27% after 17 hours of moderate use. Phone calls, emails, texts and maybe even some 3D gaming but I couldn't remember for sure. I also use Battery Graph to give myself a visual representation of my battery throughout the day and that helps me see when and where my batter is getting drained or if its going to sleep properly. Keeping my Wifi on also seems to drain it so unless I need fast internet I have it off. It doesn't seem to sleep properly when its on even if I have it set to "sleep when screen off" as the phone still likes to "partial wake" and run wild on the net.
Sorry if its long winded and confusing but after tons of research on this I've come to accept what I've found. I hope it has helped someone.

I also changed my launcher to Go Launcher and it helped LG Home stop using battery.
So there I started out at actually 70%. After swapping to launcher pro, rebooting, and charging, it's gradually gone down to 40%

You all have to remember froyo isn't the greatest when dealing with resources hence why Gingerbread was released so hopefully once we get that update things will be much better.
If you use cwm, try battery calibration. when you reset it the battery meter become more accurate.
I use up my battery from 100% downto 40%really fast. but the remaining 40% looks far more than the first 60%

Ok I'm a noob when it comes to phones I need step by step to upgrade to gingerbread I tried with update tool it won't see my phone my phone is unlocked got it off eBay it was new please help
Okay, so to start I don't consider myself a complete and total noob to all this stuff. I've owned plenty of devices,
I bought the Atrix HD and put in my EB40, and I'm very happy with the results. I've been getting about 5.5-6 hours on screen with two days of usage--quite good.
But I know people with the Maxx's, too.
I've looked at what is using the most battery, and no matter what I do it's always been android OS, always using 30+%.
I've done resets and used it without any apps installed, and it's the same as downloading and syncing everything. I don't get it.
I also have used BBS to check for wakelocks, but there's nothing out of the ordinary. I've compared it to wakelocks on my N4, and they're about the same. I don't get it.
Any thoughts?
Did you buy a new battery? so, maxx's battery?
Yup. Bought atrix and eb40 at the same time. When they both arrived, the first thing I did was install the new battery.
I bought new too. I had the same problem. You must full use the phone and charge the phone completely finish. And connect the charge wait 8-12 hour. Try 1 week. Okay? Cuz battery is new.. Battery should be fine.
I've had the phone almost two months and have done that, no improvements

I didn't calibrate because I read everywhere that battery calibration doesn't do anything.
Usually, when connected to wifi, I go for about 35 hours with 5-6 hours of on screen time.
Don't have any screen caps at the moment. Been using my Nexus 4 until I figure this out with the Atrix HD.
Any new suggestions?

I'm having this same issue...I'm BL unlocked, on MR, and I can't stop the battery from just draining sooo fast. I had the same problem before I unlocked the BL, so I'm just very confused about what the cause is.
Maybe Google Now could be taking up more battery along with the way the UI is rendered due to project butter. My Android OS battery usage has also go up considerably. Just a theory.

I've had this phone for nearly a year (8 gb AT&T version). It is completely stock running Android 4.1. Lately, the phone has been getting extremely hot with even low to moderate use, to the point of having to even stop using it for about 15 to 20 minutes to let it cool down. and the battery seems to be draining a lot quicker than it ever used to be (5 to 6 hours).
When looking at the battery stats, it says that "Android OS" is eating up most of the battery, which seems atypical to me; usually its the screen that eats up most of the battery.
So is there anything I can do to fix this? I know rooting and installing a custom rom would probably help the battery life, but because the device is still under warranty I don't even want to take the chance with it, because my contract expires in October and I don't want anything to happen to my phone in between then.
Like I said, the device is still under warranty so is overheating/lower battery life a plausible reason to get a replaced phone? Also, would I have to go through Motorola to do this or through AT&T? Any insight is greatly appreciated
Thanks!
Battery is a reason and I'm sure it overheating is also so if you do in fact have a warrant and don't want to run a custom rom I'd bring it to att.

I live in New Jersey, so its typical summer weather but I don't think the weather is the cause, it just gets really hot from normal use. I'll give an example, I was sitting in a car a couple days ago (not the driving) and was bored so I decided to play some candy crush. I played for maybe 5-7 minutes until the phone got too hot to even touch. I never got any error messages or anything but I had to put the phone down because it was too hot. I also checked that the battery went down about 5-6 percentage points, just for playing a simple game for 5-7 minutes; candy crush is not a very demanding game like some 3D games are. the same thing happens when i'm just using the phone on facebook/twitter/browser etc. for around 10 straight minutes, I end up having to put the phone down. I was never having this problem before which is why I am concerned and my warranty expires in less than a month so I want to try to get a replacement before the times is up.

Yes I use the stock charger with the stock cable. I occasionally charge on my computer, but thats only once in a while. And even though I haven't gotten a overheat warning yet, I'm sure if I used it for just a little longer than I usually do I could probably get it (and burn my fingers in the process). Wouldn't that warrant a replacement? The phone obviously isnt supposed to get that hot that fast, and the battery isnt supposed to drain that fast as well.

Hmm, the problem seems to be battery related then. Some sort of short between terminals?
I guess you could take it down to the store and explain the situation. They'd probably have to open it up to have a look. I have a feeling that by swapping a new battery it might get fixed.
And as for battery usage, my Android OS is also consuming more battery than the screen so that really isnt a valid indicator. Im not sure exactly how hot your phone is getting because a warning message should pop up on your display.
Let your phone completely discharge till it switches off. Then recharge till it hits 100%
Try this cycle atleast twice and then use it and see how it works out

Yeah I'll definitely try to do a few power cycles. I may be able to get bette battery life that way. Not sure if it will help with the heat but its worth a try. And I will probably still go to AT&T just because I still have warranty so I might as well give it a shot.
Maybe its just too hot for my general comfort, maybe thats normal for a dual core phone, it just seems hotter than usual. I do have a case (that I usually dont use) that I can put on to maybe make the phone not feel as hot while I use it.
Hello all. I've been having this problem for a while and I can't quite seem to solve it.

This is exactly what my phone has been doing for months and I can't figure out for the life of me what it is. I have used several apps to monitor CPU, battery, and application usage, but I can't pinpoint what is causing it. I just turn off Wifi and data and it stops most of the battery usage. I was just coming to ask the same question, but I saw this post instead. I would love to figure this out, as it as happened on my current and last ROM.

It doesn't seem to be dependant on WiFi or data for me. I keep both of them off when I'm at home and the same thing still happens.
Hopefully we can both fix this stupid problem.
I was having a look at a review for the new Nexus 7, and the battery information on it looked very similar to that of mine.

The Android OS looks a lot better than what mine looks like. Maybe I'll have to try that kernel also. What were you on before? I'm on a CM kernel that came with my rom.
How old is your Note? I acquired mine just a couple months after they very first came out. Over the past few months while on my current ROM, I have had lots of random freezing and shut downs. I figured it was the ROM and just kept on restarting. (I'm lazy and didn't want to flash something else). Froze today again, like usual, so I pulled the cover off, and yanked the battery. However, while the battery was out, I noticed that it has started to swell. I don't know if this is recent or I just haven't noticed it. Perhaps my battery is the cause of all my problems. I wouldn't doubt it, as the battery that went out in my Galaxy S 4g pretty much rendered the phone useless as it kept on swelling.
Now I don't know if the battery swelling could also be related to the high "Android OS' usage, but I thought I would let you know. That's two Samsung batteries that I have had go bad on me in my two most recent devices. I'll be ordering another OEM battery here shortly to see how it affects the problems I have had. I'm actually surprised that I didn't notice it yet. My stats right now have the battery at 14%, with 12+ hours on the battery, and only 36 minutes of screen-on time. Pretty screwed up stats, I'd say. Of course, Android OS is top of the list for using 64% of it so far.
Summary: Check battery. Maybe our problem has an easy solution.

Yea same here. Once i get below say 12% It may shut off. Hit power, says its 0%, then the second i plug it into the charger it then registers at like 8-12%. This is just something that happens with old batteries. They can't keep both the voltage and/or amps high enough at a low charge and the phone "Thinks" there is enough power, and the readings it gets says there is but the battery just then gives out.
Here is a good explanation of it.

I had this issue as well. I replaced the battery and the problem disappeared. Don't waste your time with factory resets, won't fix the problem. Battery replacement was the best thing I've done besides Sunshine. Back up everything, take your time, watch tear down videos. Good luck.

I got mine on Amazon and it wasn't OEM, so there's always some risk there. I installed mine in Dec 2016 after owning the phone over two years. Battery has been great so far, but only averageAmazon reviews, so keep that in mind.
