is a new recovery needed to root? - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys.. this question might be very noob but I will throw it anyway.. otherwise you dont learn.
I'm wondering if installing a new recovery like TWRP in order to root.. I ask this because as I've seen all these recoveries pretty do much the same.. install things from zip, wipe, etc.. The real Thing is that I wan't to skip using ODIN because I don't like it.. I use Linux and I don't see any way of installing it...
Thanks in advance.

NooB question about rooting, HELP please...

Okay guys im new to the Android scene, i just rooted my N1 and was wondering what do you all recomend for mods...suck as i know that there is no way to unroot as of yet and do i really want to be able to get OTA upgrades? with that said, should i install [Recovery] [21-Mar-2010] RA-nexus-v1.7.0, [ROM] CyanogenMod-5 for Nexus One (STABLE) [03/23/2010 / 5.0.5.3], or [N1 Addon] Nexus One Addon 0.1 - Makin' Bacon [01/08/2010]??? if i install just the addon with the recovery will i still be able to have OTA upgrading...or should i just go for the new CM rom??? thanks in advanced...
Usually ROMs can have features OTAs are going to have months before they are actually released. Like trackball notifications, himem (using more of the available memory), and what not.
When you root your phone, you arent really losing OTAs, you are more so getting them earlier than you usually would. Just not through the same process - really its better.
And, as people are going to say.. search. This has been answered so many times before.
Flash Amon_RA Rec, NANDROID BACKUP!!! Wipe, Flash CM5.0.5, Flash CM5.0.5.3 (heard there was a problems on a full wipe going straight to .5.3), Flash gapps (if you want google apps), reboot!!! Running latest and greatest!!
Edit: @Eclair beat me but I should add it anyways.....Search!! PS, if you screw up the above directions it's not my fault.....
Thanks for the quik replies, and thanks for now flamming i jsut wanted to get some good input to help out a noob...

[Q] About rooting

Hey i am totally new to this rooting and stuff...i am confused;(...i have done a soft root using Universal Androot...i want to install CM6 using ROM manager my N1 is runnin wit 2.2 FRF91....Is this soft root enough to flash a custom rom or should i do anything else........
Pls help me!!
Thanks in advance....
Try it! xD
Seriously, if you have root, just install ROM Manager, and use it to flash a custom recovery, and then a ROM.
For the custom recovery, if you're on a newer phone you probably have the SLCD screen. The only Clockworkmod recovery that works with the SLCD is 2.5.1.1 which is available in the other recoveries section at the bottom of the first page.
Make sure you do a back up first.
Back up all your apps and data with Titanium Backup.
When flashing the ROM, wipe.
Make sure you install the latest gapps.
But first, read the wiki, and understand what you are doing...

It's better to ask first, if you are unsure... xD
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Thanks for ur reply danger-rat...Am totally new my questions may sound stupid so kindly bear wit me...
I bought this phone a while ago...i dont think it has an SLCD screen...and am havin a problem wit OTA update to 2.2.1...i did not get any update notifications still..does this mean that ther is something wrong wit my phone??
No, there's nothing wrong with your phone. Read the Wiki and follow the guides to root. If you don't understand what you're doing, and you don't have the patience to read - you shouldn't be rooting the phone.
The OTA update server is still down, I believe.

[Respond ASAP] CWM Installed before Root.

NOTE: This was posted in the past, but I messed up the wording... probably why I didn't get help. I said that I had forgot to flash, but what I forgot to do was to Root my phone. Here's a copy-paste of my previous post, but with fixed wording.
Hi there!
First of all, yes, I'm completely new to modding Android phones. Not so new to modding in general though, which makes me question why I made such a nooby mistake... but alas, I now have to ask what many might think to be a nooby question in order to fix said mistake.
Just as the title said, I accidentally installed CWM before rooting my phone, and am now unable to launch into Recovery Mode. I know that there's a way to get it revert it to stock recovery, but as far as I've been able to tell, there's no way to do that without going into the Recovery menu in the first place. Does anybody have an idea what I can do?
My phone can still launch to the firmware (stock firmware, but am planning on installing Cyanogenmod 11), so for now I'm alright but considering the OTHER problems I'm having with the stock firmware, I'd really like a way to get back to my installation ASAP. If I can't, I'll get to my problems with the stock FW later...

If u remove & insert battery, & then try entering recovery mode(Home+Power keys)...u surely have accessed recovery by now

Which CWM version did you use? Are you running a Stock rom?

[Q] need help with flashing custom roms on xperia z3

my phone isnt rooted but that part i can do alone. the thing is that these processes scare me u know , losing all your data and all that .
can someone please explain to me what will exactly happen and how to flash a rom because my phone isnt compatable with the easy methods such as using clockwork mod
or rom manager. i guess that im gonna need to flash a custom recovery image which i still dont get .
please help
Hi, thank you for using XDA Assist. The first time you flash a Rom can be scary. The best thing you can do is do your homework before flashing and make sure you know how to return to stock in case something goes wrong. The best place to get help is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/help and I'm going to ask a moderator to move your question there
Good luck and happy flashing

Like the other guy said, the first time flashing a rom does sound scary, but mostly anything you do can be reverted and you can get back to stock safetly
as long as you do know how to get back to stock before you flash you should be good
Also you should get to know the key's to get to certain modes I.E: flashmode, fastboot and a hard restart

ROM flash guidance

Hi there, masters of rooting and stuff. Would someone be so kind to offer some guidance for flashing custom ROM? I'm on ZUI 3.5.388 and I'm sick of it, so I would like to flash either AEX or RR, but everything seems very complicated. I understand that I need to unlock bootloader and I'm pretty sure I'm familiar with that process.
But I'm not sure what to do after that - is it TWRP, do i need to install factory2vendor, how do I do that and when, do I need to install broadbend (giving that I'm using latest ZUI) and in which order do I do all that.
Thanks.
