my phone isnt rooted but that part i can do alone. the thing is that these processes scare me u know , losing all your data and all that .
can someone please explain to me what will exactly happen and how to flash a rom because my phone isnt compatable with the easy methods such as using clockwork mod
or rom manager. i guess that im gonna need to flash a custom recovery image which i still dont get .
please help

Hi, thank you for using XDA Assist. The first time you flash a Rom can be scary. The best thing you can do is do your homework before flashing and make sure you know how to return to stock in case something goes wrong. The best place to get help is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3/help and I'm going to ask a moderator to move your question there
Good luck and happy flashing

Like the other guy said, the first time flashing a rom does sound scary, but mostly anything you do can be reverted and you can get back to stock safetly
as long as you do know how to get back to stock before you flash you should be good
Also you should get to know the key's to get to certain modes I.E: flashmode, fastboot and a hard restart

[Q] Complete Newbie ICS Help! :)

Hi guys,
Basically I would like to install the ICS rom on my Galaxy S i9000 but have absolutely no knowledge of how to do so having never installed a custom rom before. Looking at the 'tutorial' for installing ICS leaves me just as clueless as it seems the individual steps require a decent knowledge of knowing what you are doing!
Also, I have discovered from attempts in the past that my Galaxy is one of those that is unable to go into download mode so that is another thing that I need help with (the link to the thread for the solution to this problem in the Galaxy FAQ is dead).
So yeah, any help much appreciated or even a point in the direction of the most thorough guide there is.
Cheeers.
Well, before you do anything you need to enable download mode. Think it's a case of enabling USB debugging and then adb, although I never had to do it.
Secondly you should probably stick a stock gingerbread rom on with odin.
Flash a kernel with odin.
Flash ICS
Flash ICS again.
Going straight to ICS with very little experience of custom ROMs may be a bit difficult especially given it's alpha status.
my phone also had the lock on the Download mode, seem like some service provides disable the feature to "try and prevent" people to flash custom roms as this voids warranty in South Africa. I found a fix on Google but cant remember where.. so if you dont get it right... some guys made a homemade jig here is a link on how to make it...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551
and when flashing a custom rom its best to follow the roms tutorial and usually there are post regard similar issues that could be encounter in the process. so the search function ends up helping alot instead of having to read thru 100 pages lol
its all new to us in the beginning then it just becomes second nature lol
i recon this is a nice tutorial to use
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/android-4-0-update-for-galaxy-s-i9000-custom-rom/
even has a method to return to stock

1st u did not say what stock firmware u ve, If u ve updated with kies then u should ve download mode, i ve exactly the same problem. Once i updated from foryo to gingerbread i ve the 3 button download mode but still no recovery, u might never get it but dun worry u can still flash custom roms.
Here's what u ve to do, upgrade to stock gingerbread 2.3 with kies then flash cfroot kernel with odin,u'll ve recovery n then flash what u like...

Josh. This is NOT a rom which you should pop your cherry on. It is buggy, not very fast and you need a good working knowledge of how to recover a soft bricked phone. If you cannot get into download mode, you would be foolish to flash ANY rom. There is a fix, search xda.
I admire the size of your swingers, but would recommend you gain a little more flashing experience.
However, good luck if you do decide to flash - there's plenty of help here if all goes wrong.
i "popped my custom rom cherry" on ICS build 12 i screwed it up when trying to go for build 13 but i found this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14273101&postcount=1
i installed the latest gingerbread kernel then the rom files and it was fine ater that and im just about to put build 14 on now so dont worry to much about it. Ive never got my phone to a state where i cant fix it, so if me a supernoob can recover a brick just about anyone could

[Q] flashing custom rom 1st time

hi
im on 2.3.4 stock and rooted and i have converted file system to ext4 before backing up.(is that safe) or should i convert to rfs? and then backup?
im kind of scared to flash custom roms, i wana flash ics onecosmic.
i did a backup in CWM now if i flash ics rom and something goes wrong can i just revert back to previous firmware by doing a restore in CWM?
Sure!
If you had backup everything (most important thing is ROM) and with the term everything I mean EVERYTHING (mp3, images on SD etc etc) you can now flash from CWM the .zip you want.
I'm on teamhacksung's one (still ICS) so I don't know well the procedure to flash it,
but on the thread it's all documented!
Hope to have another ICS soon !
ext4 doesnt matter?
i just flash roms thats it?
If you wanna be 100% sure "downconvert" to RFS again, backup again, then flash what you want!
2 backups is better than 1.

I suggest you to revert back to rfs before flashing any custom ROM.
Lagfixes can cause problems when flashing and go back to rfs isn't harmfull or complicated.
Than follow exactly what is written on the OP of the Rom of your choice and you're ready to go.
When you have everything backed up, in the worst case of a bad flash you can always go backwhit your NANAD backup or to stock with Odin and Download mode. I was scared like you but now I flash ROMs like crazy even if I'm not so experinced!
ok im gona do it now
thanks alot guys

And self research with the help of XDA and Google
People are saying its hard to brick SGS.
There is 1 golden rule backup whatever you can before flashing (most important thing is backing up /efs partition because there are all data describing your individual phone egz IMEI number).
When I flashed ICS I couldn't get network signal so I had to restore my /efs and it worked.
It is hard to brick when you can get inside recovery & download mode, otherwise not so much ;-)
Only play around with ROM's if the 3 buttons combo work
Well i got my I9000 3 days ago and i already bricked it twice!
Well after you do the same thing with more than 2 phones, you set lol

Twice same phone? then it look like you didn't bricked it at all.
For me and probably most of people definition of bricking is:
-you cant get into download mode (semi brick)
-you cant get into download mode using a jig plug (only service can help you then but warranty doesn't cover this so it depends on luck)
-you lost your /efs (no backup anywhere) (only service can help you then but warranty doesn't cover this so it depends on luck)
-and I guess other option could be you messed up with bootloader and cant reflash it ;/

[Q] Help and advice needed please with cwm

Hi hopefully someone could maybe help me and point me in the right direction as im still very new to android and cant quite grasp what i need to do? and scared ill brick my shiney new phone!!
ok so i have put rowmow ics 4.0.3v1 on my phone but last night i wanted to try and put another rom on but every time i go into cwm it starts to install rom but will not pass setting permissions i am unsure as to what i need to do next
i have cf kernel 3.0.15-19220zclp1-cl131270
superuser and root checker says im rooted?
driving me mad as to what i have done or i am doing wrong
ive read different things here and there and some saying to flash to a kl3 but unsure what that is or if it even right ?
sorry 4 the noobish questions but i guess we have all had to start some where and this is me starting and hopefully soon grasp what i need to do?
many thanks 4 reading this and hopefully pointing me to what i need to do next!!
Looks like you do not have full root.
If you are Noob then you should read all the instructions properly otherwise you would brick your phone.
It is not a good idea to mess with ICS chinese leak, be careful.
i did read all instructions properly and as stated in op thread is was supposed to have full root
now your answer was not what i was really looking for some help or advice would be better rather than stating be careful!!
how can i rectify the problem to get full root back? so i can try different rom
i appreciate that you took time out to read my post but you was not very helpful
you need to provide more info..
if you're trying to go from a ICS rom to a GB ROM then you first need to flash a gingerbread kernel and then reboot recovery and flash the GB ROM from there.
its sorted i worked it out i was going to another ics rom i installed abys 3.9 installed new rom and flashed cf kernel and new rom working fine
probably an easier way to do it but that was the only way i could get past the permission problem

You just said "another ICS rom" and mentioned you are a noob, so with so much of unclear things I just wanted to let you know that something like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526852 could happen.
anyway, I am glad you could sort it out.

[Q] How do I reboot after installing ClockworkMod?

I attempted to root my SGS (which had stock Gingerbread Value 2.3.6) using a guide on the Snappyguides blogspot page (the system won't let me, as a newbie, post the URL).
Odin did its thing and then the Samsung Galaxy screen came up (just the white lettering, not the multicoloured animated S) and then... nothing. It just stayed like that for about five seconds, then the white Samsung Galaxy S came up again, then the blank screen ad infinitum.
I can access the download screen and I can access the recovery screen (which does seem to indicate that ClockworkMod v2.5.1.0 has been installed). The trouble is that none of the options seem to do anything.
I have tried searching the forum for similar problems and have read the sticky. The only answers I seem to have been able to find so far suggest flashing a new Rom.
Before I go this far, is flashing a new Rom really necessary in this instance? I have never done this procedure before, so I'm wary of messing things up even further. But obviously if the phone is past the point of no return as far as the stock Rom is concerned, then that'll be what I have to do.
I'd appreciate some advice before doing anything else to my phone though.
I now seem to be able to get the recovery menu options to respond, so maybe all is not lost. Have set it to root and it's currently converting to EXT4 and is about halfway through that.
I'm hoping once that's done, it'll be bootable.
If not, what do I need to do to make the SGS boot again? Is there any way of getting back to stock or can I only flash a stock rom back on?
Nope, still not booting. It just keeps going to the Samsung I9000 white lettering, stays there for five seconds, goes blank for five seconds, then the white lettering goes back and on, off like that forever.
So... anyone willing to help?

Thanks for responding.
Sorry for being a n00b but I can't find anything in there that helps me. All I see is a lot of jargon about various roms, kernels and something called Voodoo.
I had a working phone with Gingerbread 2.3.6 Value. I added Clockworkmod via Odin. Now I can't get the phone to boot beyond the splash screen. It doesn't even get as far as the animated S, all I get is the splash screen going on and off every few seconds.
All I want is to get my phone working again, I really couldn't care less about custom roms etc.
If anyone can help this poor n00b, I'd be very grateful!
Incidentally, I've downloaded what I understand to be the factory rom for JW4 from sammobile.com - this is a 171MB zip file with just two files inside - a tar file called JW4_JW5_JW4 and a dll file called SS_DL.dll. I'm not really sure what to do with these to restore my phone via Odin. This is the kind of thing I need help with - the threads I've read so far don't make much sense to a poor confused n00b I'm afraid.

OK, thanks for that. I'm supposed to be asleep right now, so I'll come back to this later but thanks for helping.
But just to clarify for now - this will restore the phone to a working version of 2.3.3 and from there I can get back to the latest stock rom (2.3.6) via Kies, yes? I need to get into Kies anyway to restore my contacts from backups (as I haven't yet seen a way of restoring the backups except via Kies).
Thanks once again.

Well, I did get it working again in the end by using a factory rom. Thanks for your help anyway, W1nst0n.
I do intend to attempt to root it again but this time I intend to do it properly.
Any suggestions on what may have caused the boot problem I had? Perhaps using a version of ClockworkMod that was incompatible with 2.3.6 Value?
