Must have applications for Android L - Nexus 4 General

Hello Xda'ns,
If you are not living under a rock since from the last week, you know that Android L has been started to boot up on our Nexus 4. Most of us (Okey at least me) is using it as daily drive. Since this is stock, and not much framework based mods / xposed available i would like to share some must have apps for Android L.
On a first look i missed these following features which i can't live without :
* Volume rocker wake up
* Battery % in status icon
In my view these two are very basic and must have features in daily life. Volume rocker may be not a big deal if you have good power key. But not for me. So i started searching for solutions found few. But none of them satisfies me completely. Any way i am sharing what i found here.
For Battery % in status icon use this application. Works perfectly : Battery percent for KitKat
For Volume rocker wake up : Okey. I can't find anything I found one But it gives wakelock.
Please share your views, findings to get a good user experience like we had in custom ROMs. I am looking for something like a network activity indicator now...

Cant find anything for network indicator

What about reboot? Is there any way to enable a reboot option?

If you're rooted, this should help with rebooting:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.siriusapplications.quickboot&hl=en
I'm not sure if it works with L though but I've been using it since my Nexus S days

This can be a good idea to wake with volume rocker
*cant post links yet* so search for org.firezenk.wakeall on Google Play

I got the ROM Toolbox by JRummy back when I first got into this stuff and I still use it to this day for the shortcut widget for rebooting.
And it is working just fine on L.

Well there are a few of my favorite apps that aren't working with Android L right now. But some I recommend are:
Gallery KK (stock gallery, I don't use G+)
Greenify
Lars Team's App Ops
Light Flow

The Talon app updated for L is really gorgeous

Replacing power button yourself is super easy. It slides right in and cost less than $10 shipped. I just did mine 2 weeks ago spent $8 and I also have an extra vol button now too

It's a common feature for people to use with gravitybox, but since xposed isn't available yet you would need something standalone to replace it. I love having a speed indicator in my statusbar, and I'd really miss it if I switched for good without xposed. This and a few more features, and I'll be all set to take the dive to daily driver.

I think this one is great! Power Toggles

How Google screwed up quick settings ...

So, quick toggles for WiFi, Bluetooth, data... Most manufacturers have had them for YEARS : Samsung, HTC, LG and now Google finally decides to include them in stock Android but it seems like a half baked effort
They're not really quick toggles, more like shortcuts, instead of turning WiFi on you're redirected to the WiFi settings, the same happens with Bluetooth and the rest of the pack, also what is the purpose of having my picture on quick settings? Maybe on the tablets where you have multiple user support but on the phone?
Also the toggles are not customizable, do you guy enjoy this toggles?
I think they have a lot of potential but until android 5 arrives I hope cm 10.1 or aokp takes care of this broken toggles

It could be useful to access settings if you need, for example, to switch WiFi quickly. I found using a toggle widget that came with it - pretty useful.
I do like the layout and two finger swipe method. If they were toggles and not shortcuts then I'd prefer it to the typical layout with touchwiz/sense. I'm sure a custom rom in the future will change this .

I actually really like them. I think they can definitely be improved, but every feature starts somewhere, right? I use the WiFi shortcut frequently to get into the settings rather than just toggle. The battery shortcut is really useful too I think. Maybe in later versions we can customize them but I think its a great starting point.
And no, I don't know what the self contact card is good for yet. Maybe someone can figure out a use! =P

I would have preferred they were actual toggles but its still an improvement over the way it was before: nothing. Lol

totally agree. maybe were spoiled by the awesomeness of CM toggles. Wish they were click - easy on and off, hold- go into settings.
I know molesarecoming from the paranoid android thread for the Galaxy Nexus said they turned the quick settings into toggles, but I don't have a Gnex to test it on and he quickly redacted the build because it was to buggy. So as others said, I'm sure it'll be one of the first features in most custom Roms.

I prefer toggles. It would be nice if a short press toggled and a long press was the shortcut though.

Quick settings are now working as toggles on my n7 thanks to paranoid android(2.99).
Sent from my Full Android on Grouper using XDA Premium HD app
My main beef about the toggles is the inconsistency between phone and tablet. Two fingers for a phone but a swipe on the right side of the screen for tablets.
So many times I've had to catch myself when going from N4 to N7.
They've pushed the hybrid UI on to the tablets for the sake of consistency but then they do something like this.
I happen to enjoy these toggles very much.

these are the best fricking toggles that exist on planet earth, you just dont know it yet. they created clever, extendable toggles that can be anything. a developer can put them into toggle/longpress-settings mode easily, aaronpoweruser's already done it - but rather think of how they will evolve. im blown away by the fact that some of them are intelligent, that is - they are added automatically when they are relevant (timer, alarm, gps, etc.). its such a cool idea, combine that with API support and you'll not only unclutter an abused notification tray but you'll also make room for alot of possibilities. and my goodness they look absolutely stunning.
never quite understood whats the big deal about cm's toggles. they are just a bunch of dead images chained together. i see nothing in there, but good that google took inspiration from that and brought it a step further - although the first implementation is sure not finished as we all can see.
I agree, hopefully aokp makes a rom soon .
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Tap/hold Toggle/Visit would be the better implementation but it's a good beginning.
What I don't like it's the way of switching between notifications and settings on the phones. The switching mode on the tablets is much better and I want to have it on the phones to.
I can't remember that I've ever used my phone with two hands, so the two finger method isn't a real solution for me.
Pull down left, enter notifications
Pull down right, enter quick- settings
(Like on the tablets)That would be great!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Agree with the OP completely. Sad thing is, Google had dozens of examples of GOOD quick settings toggles to look at and copy, yet it somehow managed to produce this POS quick settings menu. Custom ROMs and widgets have had superior quick settings options literally for years. How Google managed to screw this one up is beyond me. Disgraceful.

Why do you care, for what he needs this?
It's possible on some devices. Special kernel for this feature. Dont know if its true, but people was saying, its specially optimized for Snapdragon 800, on other devices there was some battery drain. Maybe something changes untill now.
I hope they're will be some progress about this feature, on our Xperia line phones
[My apologizes for my bad english]
that would be great, to save the HW buttons life
You can use Wake up touch (legacy), it works fine for me but it used to waste about the 20% of my battery charge. It's avaliable in the Google play store.

It would most likely cause serious battery drain, even if it would actually work.
Our CPU architecture does not have that one battery saving core that is responsible for this feature on other phones.
I doubt that implementing the feature would be impossible, but if a lower battery life is the price, I'm not willing to pay it. ^^

Yes this is true. The newer chipsets have the ability to listen to voice like "okay google" and human interaction like tap to wake or whatever, while the processor is sleeping. Our devices do not have that feature so it will result in no deep sleep at all. This is going to be a significant hit on battery life.
The double tap2wake is related to a kernel and I think the doomlord is working on this feature in his new kernel!!!

I tried porting DT2W to our phone (TX) once. It works...but really buggy. Touchscreen misbehaves after some time. So I no longer maintain this thing... If someone wants to try/help, look at my GitHub : https://github.com/updateing/android_kernel_sony_msm8960/tree/dt2w
The kernel source is for OmniROM, not stock 4.3. Keep that in mind if you try this on stock 4.3, something bad may happen...

Q: Root and then unRoot

Hi
I just moved from LG-G3 to N6, and like it for the most part. There are a couple of things I liked, which I believe I can achieve by rooting my N6
- Notification light
- Knock Code.
The rub is, that my corporate requires me to use AirWatch agent which doesn't work on Rooted devices. Is it possible for me to Root, install the notification light/knock code changes and then unRoot again (and retain these modifications)?
I hope the answer is yes
BTW, my Android version: 6.0.1, Build MMB29K
Probably not. Almost definite not for the light as it requires writing to the kernel's virtual file system to turn the light on or off... But maybe someone can correct me with some other way.
no. once you unroot, your mods won't work anymore. anyways.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/attention-questions-t3228454
Well the tap thing is xposed right? Never tried but I have heard since xposed installs its own framework to run its programs that you can unroot and things may still work. Though I think a lot of things that look for root look for xposed too, so your still likely out of luck.
Thanks a lot for all your help. Next time I will post to the right (Q&A) sub-forum
Sad, that the notification light is in the HW, but not enabled in Nexus

I like that as well. I'm using PureNexus ROM that provides configurable LEDs(like I've it enabled only for battery charging) + double tap to wake and sleep out of box. It has many more customization options and very stable as its very very close to stock. Have been using it for a while now.

Great Rom! one small problem when I went to my settings the text was white and no background color. so very difficult to see. Thank you for your time and effort!!
The quick fix for this was to install a theme from Samsung.
WOW!!! Just installed it this morning but I have doze back finally!!! Another top notch release, the customization is incredible on this. I probably spent a good hour or more setting every feature up to my liking, the options are unlimited on what you can do. Great job, I have no complaints whatsoever. Thanks again.

Full Screen gesture control like Paranoid Android's blink concept.

I came around this app called Fluid Navigation Gestures.
It's awesome, it needs some permissions to hide the navigation bar that you have to provide through adb commands. The instructions are clear and anyone can do all that.
There are unlimited possibilities for the way you navigate through this app, It's highly customisable. There is also a 1$ optional payment that opens up more customizations.

Well no lags on my device, and the bug you said is not listed there, maybe it got fixed. Although there is a mention of lag due to accessibility service, but I never experienced it.
Only issue I have is faulty previous app function, at times it tries to open the app I am already in.
Here is the screenshot of known bugs in the app.

Sorry, I meant accessibility. It's been a few weeks already that I tried. Let's see if I'll have this problem again. This app can consistently change the way we use our soft keys phones, and I loved it
Wish Android had the swipe-to-back feature that iOS has had for years, its such a smooth experience.
MIUI has the same gestures OP suggested, but its so unnatural, same goes for these gestures.
Really nice app and "fluid". Been using since day 1 I got a2 lite, as I loved the full screen gesture on MIUI ROM.
Although I recently updated to Pie and this app (and others like this) are causing flickering issues.
EDIT
Turning on "disable HW overlays" in developer options fixes the flickering issue for now.
