Battery Drain - Moto X Q&A

Can anyone help me? Starting yesterday my son's phone started running really hot and the battery had been draining at a rapid rate. The battery info shows Motorola Services using most battery. This has never been the case. Here's a screen shot to show what I'm talking about. Can anyone tell me what to do to resolve this?

Something with Motorola Services is causing a really nasty wakelock. I would suggest clearing the app data/cache for all Moto apps, reboot, and seeing if the wakelock goes away. You can see if there's any gaps in the phone being awakle in the expanded battery settings.

I cleared everything and problem persists. In the last half hour I've lost 28% of my battery. This sucks. I have a feeling I'm going to have to restore everything to defaults

You can try flashing the firmware again (if a flashable 4.4.3 firmware for your device is out.....don't downgrade!!!!....or just try a factory reset first.
You did reboot? That will usually clear stuck apps.
Either above scenario, all your apps and data will be gone.
Are you rooted? If so, backup with titanium backup. If not, you can try helium. I've never used it...but apparently it doesn't need root.
Alternatively.... Try going into the moto apps and turning them off. Or, if rooted....freeze them in titanium backup.

[Q] How to FULLY reset phone?

I notice now when when I factory reset my phone, it doesn't fully restore to factory default settings. Some of my carrier apps are already preinstalled right after I factory reset.
In the past, when I do a factory reset, I will receive a personalisation update which after that will install the carrier apps.
I believe this is what is causing a huge battery drain on my phone with high android system usage.
Anyway, if needed
I tried resetting on both within the os and through bootloader.
I'm on full stock 4.2.2 and have not tampered with any modification.

Whats the problem with that?
I think its normal that your carrier apps are already being installed after doing a factory reset.
Can you probably explain your problem with a bit more details?
If you have carrier-branded phone then they are built into the ROM itself so a factory reset will still include them
The issue I'm having is, I have High battery usage by Android system. I thought a factory reset could solve this issue. But right after I have done the reset, Android system starts having high battery consumption even before I sign in to any services.
Right after I updated to 4.2.2, I get around 3-5% of Android system usage in the stock battery usage details, and around 30-40% of idle times. Battery drain around 1% overnight. This continued for a few day.
But now, Android system usage contributes around 50-80% of battery usage and I have only ~5% of idle times. And battery drained 7% overnight.
I thought it was something I have downloaded that caused the issue so I did a factory reset, but the problem persists even before I downloaded or updated any apps. So I'm wondering if there are still some old cache remaining after the reset.
Here are my screen shots from GSAMbattery

Try flashing a non-carrier branded RUU. To do this, you might need to "trick" the android info.txt file in it to accept your MID and CID. It depends on which MID and CID you have. There are threads around that show you how to do this. The only possible downside to this is you might not get your carrier specific OTA's, but it sounds like you're having issues with those anyway. A lot of bloatware (carrier apps) can really drain sometimes. I hope this helps.

Input the specs you need, and the RUU should come up. Your Hboot shouldn't matter. It might be a little smoother process if you were s-off, but since you've already crossed that bridge, you just have to make do (or re-flash hboot 1.44). Hope this helps.

You have 2.25/22.5 screen/standby.

That's awesome. Don't know what you are complaining about unless you are running a custom kernel.

I'm assuming you're asking me how do I see those numbers...
I'm probably wrong.
There's the 22 and change up there in the top left.
There's the 2 and change in the center.
If you're asking me why I think you are getting better battery life than I am, then I would say it is because your phone has excellent standby, and anybody using there phone continuously can get cool screen in times. It takes more to get that and good standby.

Help me figure this out!

My phone has not always been this way. Its started in the past week. The battery seems to dive at the end of the day when I quit using it.

I'm not sure the cause or a permanent solution. But if you see the battery dropping fast... Whether it's from "phone" or anything else.... A reboot should clear it up and you won't lose so much battery life.
That is, if you notice it dropping too fast. Sometimes you might not catch it till it's too late and you're running for a charger. Lol

It's pretty obvious some app is keeping your phone awake once you have solid mobile network signal. Time for you to find out what it is.
I have Gravity box installed. That's it. last night I charged it all the way up before I went to bed. I woke up with a 50℅ loss! This time it was the media server. Whatever that is......if I look on the wakelock detector there are 1000 little things but nothing stands out. Tonight I'll do the same thing but do a reboot before I lay it to rest.
What's weird is I only get this problem when the phone is not being used. If its of any relevance I leave the WiFi on all night. And have it set to turn off when the phone sleeps.

you should know the drill. start getting rid of apps to see if it improves. or, go reverse and start over, installing one app at a time. other posters above are right. you've got something else polling, that's causing the wake lock.

Making progress. It was some app left running that kept it awake. Not sure what though.

How long have you had the rom? If you recently flashed then you need to let it sit for a day for the rom to settle. Learned that with the Dynamic Kat ROM.
If not, open the battery graph and check your wake time vs screen on time. A friend of mine had this issue on his S4 a while back. Clearing the cache and rebooting the phone worked for me. Worst case is you reflash the ROM.

That really sounds like a bit of voodoo. A ROM doesn't need to "settle" with regard to power usage.
Hey, that's what I was told in the DK thread, they said to let the rom settle for a couple of days. The first day I flashed the rom I was getting 4 hours of screen on time, three days later I started getting 6 hours of s.o.t. They had an explanation as to why this occurs but I forget what they said.
If you don't trust that, try recalibrating the rom by downloading an app that deletes the battery stats file.
Sent from my SM-N900A using XDA Free mobile app
I have heard that ROMs need time to settle many times. That is a myth. Resetting battery stats does nothing except erase battery stats. There is no calibration.
On your battery settings click on the graph this time. See how your network connection is. Could be an issue where you lose your connection and the phone consumes the battery searching for a network connection.
Also did you add anything new lately like an app or an email account?

Something's running keeping your phone awake. Try Wakelock detector to track that down. Also try the carrier iq thread idk what it does seems it fixed stuff for people and made their phone sleep better. Most of the time it's an app. I dont use greenify but people use it to hibernate user apps that run in background.

What could be killing my battery so quickly?

It seems that Android System uses a really high amount of battery, and I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas, or would know how to find out.
My battery lasts around 5 hours anymore, doing the same thing I used to do when it lasted 17+.

I noticed that on 4.3, yeah, the phone radio was the biggest consumer of battery, butconsidering your usage, perhaps screen usage should be greater. Regardless, you're getting 4SOT/23.5SBY which is far better than I'm getting (2.5/14) on KK. lol
If you think about it, if nothing is waking your device, the phone radio is the only thing using power during sleep. So I guess it makes sense.
How about this? Supposing it has to do with the end of charge mechanic of the cpu, but it's worth a check.
Perhaps the battery is just going bad, after a year?
Sent from my HTC One using XDA Premium 4 mobile app.
Any other ways I could see what's causing such a drain on the battery? I fear pretty soon keeping it plugged in won't even give it charge enough to stay on.
Sent from my HTC One using XDA Premium 4 mobile app.
Or maybe something about this may help figure it out? I put it in Airplane Mode while charging and it didn't seem to make a difference in the rate at which it charged.
Could that possibly narrow down the cause?

Well that's a bit extreme. You need Google Services for a lot of things, and that app is central to the android experience.

tbh it's hard to tell. I would say do a TI backup and flash something fresh. If you like JB, I think viper 3.5 is good for you.
You could also try calibrating your battery. I did it, and it seems to have had, at the very least, a slight placebo effect .
