It's now legal to unlock phones! - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

http://mobile.theverge.com/2014/7/16/5909337/senate-passes-phone-unlocking-bill
Don't know what this means for us but I figured it's a good read.
Sent from my Towel rooted S5

It's been legal to unlock phones for a long time. I don't know about this article, but people have been doing it for the S5 since it's release, buying from T-Mobile and unlocking to use with AT&T
It doesn't really have an effect since it was never really enforced.

The bill only passed the Senate, it still needs to pass the House and be signed by President Obama. A lot can change before he signs it.

Idk about anyone else but every time I've upgraded my ATT phones they have unlocked them all first call. I've never had an issue with them not wanting to unlock them. Not sure if its because I have a 4 line family plan and been with them for about 5 years. They base it on how many times per year you request an unlock code I believe.

Unlocking Focus S

to soon?
I really want to go to an ATT store and pick up a off contract Samsung Focus S... of course i'm not going to use ATT (ugh.. in NYC they are so bad.. and, we all know they have crazy $$ limited data plans).
Do we assume unlock code ppl will be able to take care of it or should i wait a bit?
I'm going with T-mobile edge (ugh) and i always carry around a clearwire hotspot (it zooms in manhattan and brooklyn.. always get 10mb+) for the data.
If there is no unlock now for it.. this thread will be useful when there is
There are no ways to unlock a Mango device without developer unlock. But you will probably able to install apps via ChevronWP7 but that remains to be seen.
You shouldn't need developer unlock to unlock the device... I'm sure there will be solutions posted on ebay soon for sale. My guess is within the week.
I think he means sim unlock, not developer. I plan to pick up Focus Flash and use it on T-Mobile as well. Also, I'll going back home to Thailand this winter break, so I do have a legitimate reason to ask for an unlock code. Not that AT&T seems to care, though. I tried email them before when I was using HTC pure and got no reply at all.

where are you going to pick it up? Will the ATT store sell it to you w/o being a ATT customer? Are you worried about sim unlocking?
(i also have a dev account to unlock the OS.. but i haven't seen a point in using it other than getting the mango beta 2 days before xda ppl got it to everyone's phone)

I'm not so sure since I've never done it myself. From my research around the internet, I think you can just buy the phone off-contract at retail store. I think you can also get one from AmazonWireless as well.
On the topic, I think all those simunlocking site will have Focus S/Flash available at some point, so I think I'm not too worry about that.
Hmm not sure, I remember what happened with the old Samsung Focus when it was released, it was very difficult to get an unlocking code, even months later of its releasing the codes were hard to find

Do you remember how long it took for the first unlocking code to appear from one of the unlocking sites?
Focus released in Novemeber 2010
Unlock codes available from AT&T May 2011.
It was unlockable via websites much earlier.

First unlocking (paid) last week of November 2010.
Shortly after Focus released.
Hmm.. Sounds hopeful. I saw one site list Omnia W (Unlocked Flash) for 400USD, which isn't too bad either. But I can wait until the end of this month. I've been phone-less for almost two months now (my mom took my Venue Pro). I think I can wait a little longer
Just unlocked my Focus S!
http://www.samsungimeiunlock.com/
Paid 29 Canadian.
Yeah. Saw the news on wpcentral. I can't find Focus flash from the list, but I can follow the link from their blog. Now the question is do I want to wait for something on Black Friday. It's pretty clear that there is almost no good deal for no-contract price though..
Got mine for 425$ from the Microsoft store...

Hi,
I'm reliably informed by a guy in the UK who has one from AT&T and got it unlocked by fastgsm dot com I also bought one from AT&T Florida, well I didn't a freind of mine who is on holiday in the USA did, and I get it on Tuesday when he's back. I will be using fastgsm dot com and will post the outcome
Hope this Helps
I bought the Focus S this weekend and got it unlocked from the Samsung unlock site mentioned earlier in the thread. I'm now using it on TELUS in Canada.
Only issues I've found so far is that both MMS and Internet Sharing don't work. Once the Cheveron unlocker is available again I'll dev unlock it and see if I can get those features working.

AT&T offered an Inspire to shut me up

I called AT&T to do my part in the campaign to unlock the bootloader of the Vivid. The CSA seemed to understand our issue (wanting root/not wanting CIQ). I told her that these were the issues that needed to be resolved before I would upgrade when I am due late 2012. She (out of nowhere) asked if there were any other devices that I was interested in that were capable of root and didn't have CIQ. When I mentioned that my wife had an Inspire, she quickly asked if I was interested in an upgrade today. (I am using a rooted Aria). I told her that I didn't want to pay the higher price for a device since I am not due for an upgrade for several months. She offered to send me an Inspire, to arrive in 2 weeks if I want. Renew the contract for 2 years and it's mine. "Free"
Wow...
Nice try...if I do this, I am going to miss out on great pricing for some of the better Android devices yet to come. Or is this my last chance to get an HTC device with an unlocked bootloader? Should I bite?
No way, wait for the G Nex to hit AT&T

Important to point out that I am in the middle of a 2 year contract. An upgrade so far from my contract end date typically makes one ineligible for discounts on new equipment, right?
Also...are we sure that the G Nex will have an unlocked bootloader and no CIQ?

nexus phones are specifically made with bootloaders you can unlock easily. since the verizon one comes with bloat we can assume, if at&t subsidizes it in their store, not through the nexus website, that it will have some at&T specific apps also.
but the phone will allow u to disable them just like u can on verizon
If they said that they'd send you an Inspire with no contractual obligation, I'd have been thinking "Wow, great!". Add the two-year wrinkle to it, and you are swiftly drop-kicked back to the reality that AT&T sucks.

Sprint SIM Unlock

So I need to unlock my One for a trip to Europe next month. I called Sprint, we started the process and they told me that the One is already unlocked and that only the iPhone is locked. Is this true? From what I have read this doesn't seem to be the case. I have a GiffGaf SIM I tried to put in my phone and it says SIMLock enabled and doesn't allow me to do anything with the SIM. Thank you.
EDIT: 8/2/13 Here is the step by step guide to disable SIMLock. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44143251#post44143251

Don't bother trying the sim is unlocked but the phones work out of a frequency that none of the carriers will pick up. If you're so interested in having an unlocked phone why you even with Sprint?

Because one vacation two week vacation isn't a valid reason to switch carriers. I have my old TP2, its not a big deal. I just figured it would be nice to use my new phone while on vacation... So you are saying the only frequency that the One supports is the frequency for LTE and not that of any GSM carriers?

I went through about 6 different reps before I got a supervisor who knows anything you have to talk to international tech and then then submit a claim for you which is then reviewed by another department who then contacts you with a yes or no. It will automatically be a no if your phone hasn't been active for 90 days. They gave me that BS even with me being a rep and getting my phone given to me by HTC free of cost. So its not like I paid a subsidized price or anything but yes long process

Thank you for your response. So did you ultimately get it approved, or am I wasting my time until it has been 90 days? Which by the way is the stupid rule I have ever heard. I have been a long time Sprint customer why should it matter how long I have owned my phone?

It is a CDMA/GSM phone it will work internationally, that is not the issue. The question at hand is if the SIM can be unlocked so I can use another carrier and not pay Sprints outrageous international fees. Dual CDMA/GSM phones are nothing new. I have my old Touch Pro2 from years ago if this doesn't work, which is also a CDMA phone. Unless you have something helpful to add feel free to overlook my thread.
WTF? Is Sprint now locking all GSM phones? That policy used to apply only to iPhones. In the past, all other Sprint GSM-capable equipment was shipped unlocked.
I actually think it it would be reasonable for them to ship everything locked as long as they let established subscribers in good standing remove the lock upon request. Having to wait 90 days from the phone being activated does seem ridiculous. I don't see what they gain by doing this besides aggravating their customers.
In a semi related matter... Note that I believe the Sprint HTC One only supports one UMTS frequency (2100). That could be a problem in some countries as far as data service is concerned.
The 90 day rule is only for new customers, not a new phone. If you are a long time customer, it will be no problem. Just call the international department and they can take care of it.

Props as I already got mine unlocked with this info on day one. Sprint basically said they are not requiring an international roaming plan with this phone and that the 90 day thing for new people is to prevent them from buying their phones and selling for profit internationally.

I finally got through the process enough that I am now pending approval since my device isn't 90 days old. Non of the reps I talked to knew anything, they said the iPhone was the only phone that needed to be unlocked, that my phone was already unlocked, that it wasn't possible to use an international SIM. Be persistent insist that you are correct and that your phone does indeed require an unlock. Now hopefully it comes back with no problems from the approval process, I will be raising hell if they deny my device since it is new. That is the most absurd thing I have ever heard in my life. Good luck!
HTC ONE is a World Phone
the HTC ONE supports all GSM frequencies making it a world phone capable of using local SIM in other countries. Thanks.

Bootloader is locked because:
A.) More secure for enterprise use
B.) idiots who Brick their phones and send them in for repairs or returns.
From a business standpoint, they are doing it right to lock it down. 90% of the people don't care, and when they are selling millions of phones a year, they don't care about the 447 (current amount of people that signed the petition) that do. Google is coming out with their own version of Knox soon too.

Ok, I have been a developer for a long time way back since the days on winmo5 on the Sammy Blackjack and have been a mobile device administrator in a 160,000+ employee international company. So I'm now going to call bunk on your theories.
A) locked BL's dont have anything to do with corporate enterprise security, thy have NIL effect in the scheme of enterprise mobile security.
What is important is whether or not the administrator can Wipe/reset or even actually disable the device completely locked BL or not it doesnt matter.
B) Considering the sales of mobile devices in comparison to the number of "Idiots" who brick there device and send in for warranty, millions of devices sold and probably less than 1% returns due to personal misuse.

Do I have A Paperweight?

So pretty sure I'm a victim of just being dumb. On Craigslist, yup Craigslist, a guy was looking to trade a Note 5 (t-mobile) for a iPad Air 2. I have an extra iPad laying around that I won so was I was interested in the trade. I had done something similar with the s6 Edge. I have AT&T but want it rooted so I know the only option is t-mobile. I didn't even think, but I get home but the Note is still being financed so I'm pretty sure it's not eligible to be unlocked. I haven't called t-mobile yet, but I don't think that's gonna matter. I'm kinda screwed
Pretty sure I have an awesome iPod touch. I sent for one of those unlock code things but from what I've read that's just not gonna work. The guy was really cool, he needed to go back to an iPhone for work. I haven't tried contacting him. I obviously can but I doubt that'll go over well. Any suggestions? At the end of the day I swapped a free iPad for an awesome Note 5, but just sucks that I don't think I'll be able to use it.
Thanks
BTW it's not blacklisted, just financed. I know I could use it on T-Mobile, but I don't have the service.
What is your question? Unlock it at www.cellunlocker.net
Sent from my Gorgeous Note5
Untill its blacklisted it should still work. T mobile wont unlock it themselves till its paid off im sure but if the guy u got it from has had the service for a while he may have every intention of continuing his account and paying the bill every month. I would have passed on it myself in your situation unless it was already unlocked. Try a cheap service and get a unlock code. If it doesnt work then contact the guy back and let him know what the deal is. 50/50 chance if u contact him quick he will be cool about it.

Cellunlocker.net usually sends the code between 3-6 hours. Although on the 10 or so codes I ordered, one or two took about 24 hours

Okay. I just I'll give this site a few more hours then if not I'll try your suggestion
Also if you film the unlock process and post it on YouTube you might get between 50% and 100% discount. Here is a vid i made just a few days ago

Beware of cellunlocker.net they have poor customer service and fight you hard if you need a refund. I would verify from them that they can unlock a Tmobile Note 5 b4 you pay them a dime. With tmobiles new unlock app codes don't work anymore.

I didn't actually try cellunlocker.net yet, however on their site it says my IMEI is unlockable and gives it the ol' green check mark. Again still waiting if "theunlockingcompany" is gonna come through before I try anything else.

Thats BS. Cellunlocker have great customer service. I've been dealing with them for almost 10 years, 2-3 times a year and always had the code withing 3-6 hours with 1 exception...even on weekends and holidays they deliver. What company refunds you at least 50% of your cost just by posting a video of the process? The only reason you would ask for a refund is if you've provided them with the wrong IMEI. It happened to me once, and their terms of service clearly state that no refund will be issued if its a user mistake. Which is totally understandable because they provided me with the service, why should they pay? I had one issue with the correct IMEI being sent but process froze my phone. I called them and were able to provide me with unfreeze code over the phone and help me through the process. Their codes are also some of the cheapest on the market.
It's not because you had a bad experience that they have bad customer service. I'm sure you haven't told us the entire story either.
T-Mobile uses a Device Unlock app on it's Note5 devices; traditional sim unlocking will not work. T-Mobile does something on their end to process the unlock without entering a SIM unlock code. here's a link to an S6 thread where the OP implies he can SIM unlock your S6/Note5 device if your phone is rooted. had i known of this, i would have tried it myself. fortunately, T-Mobile granted me a permanent unlock because i paid full price for my phone. Good luck.
