Okay, so here we go..
This is a thread we've all seen before 1000 times, except.. mines a little different.
So after having Verizon for a few years, and getting real tired of their ****.. I cancelled my contract, paid my fees and dipped. I work at a RadioShack and we get a real killer deal on AT&T plans, so I couldn't pass it up. Now as far as getting a new device, I decided to wait until the Moto X+1 drops in August to pick up a phone, and since the Verizon Moto X is Sim Unlocked, I grabbed a nano Sim out of the drawer, and went to town.
Believe it or not.. Everything turned out better than expected. I wasn't getting LTE, but I was getting HSPA+ at around 12-15mbps, which I could live with for the time being. Called AT&T just to see if there were any chance of me getting LTE. Found out, that the XT1060 (the Verizon Moto X) registers in their system as a Moto Droid Razr, which since that isn't a LTE phone, they won't try to send that associated SIM LTE. So between me, the customer service guy, and my AT&T Rep.. We figured if we threw any old XT1058 IMEI on my account, it would send the SIM LTE signal.. Got that done, and presto. LTE!
Now.. Hereeeeeee comes the fun part.
3-4 days later now.. I woke up this morning, and noticed my phone had -NO- service, whatsoever.. So I power cycle it, and it comes back up, gives me that bull**** "This Sim is from an unknown source" bull****.. and then proceeds to show me my LTE is back. I go to call my AT&T rep, and it comes up "Mobile Network Unavailable". Phone flickers black, sends me back to the home screen, and my service bar starts going berserk. It switches from No service, to 3 bars of H+, 1 bar of H, full bars of E, 2 bars of LTE, and everything in between. I'm standing still, and this thing is going craaaaaaaaaazy. Finally, it dies down and starts to even out at about 4 bars of H+. Any time it pops up with LTE, i get super awesome speeds, but cant make any kind of calls, or texts, and when I try to call/text, it does the service cycling thing again.
Any ideas?
I'm of course on 4.4.2, so I can't root.. So all the solutions need to be non-root capable.
inb4 just sell it and get an AT&T Moto X.
I plan on it, if all else fails. Why not try to breathe just a little bit of life into this one first.

This a known issue on 4.4.2 - it has been reported by many users. From what I understand, Verizon did -something- because they didn't want their devices being use on domestic U.S. carriers. From all reports, GSM works flawlessly on international carriers, but has issues on domestic.
Before I advise you that it would be best to sell your X and get another, I will see if any other users have suggestions for you.
Also, if you DO decide to sell, I highly suggest that you do NOT buy the AT&T Moto X. The AT&T variant is not bootloader-unlockable (so no root/write-protect-disable), AND it is SIM-Locked to AT&T. Instead, buy the T-Mobile variant! The T-Mobile variant comes with NO bloat, IS bootloader unlockable (hello root!), AND is SIM-Unlocked for ANY GSM carrier (including AT&T). The AT&T variant DOES support 2 additional LTE bands, but AT&T has not implemented these bands in the United States yet. They are only testing the new bands in a few select markets. This means that the T-Mobile variant will support all LTE frequencies currently used by AT&T, AND has the added benefit of supporting the AWS band that is used extensively by T-Mobile, should you ever have reason to switch.
Good Luck
the message of "This Sim is from an unknown source" is part of the Verizon ROM. It was introduced with the 4.4 update. It was not there in 4.2.2 and 4.2.2 with camera fix.
The issue of trying to use LTE and the phone rebooting is known. There is discussion in this thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/verizon-moto-x-t-mobile-t2578665 as well as work around and potential fixes. While its centered around T-Mobile as the network, the same tips/tricks could be modified for use on ATT.
Since the Verizon X supports LTE Band 4 and 13, and ATT is using Bands 2, 4, 5, 7 and 17, you're only going to get ATT LTE where they have Band 4, the easy way to fix is just force the X to NOT use LTE, or remove that XT1058 IMEI to go back to ATT thinking you have a GSM/GPRS/HSPA device.
Thanks for sharing that.
I found this:
These are the steps I used to turn off LTE and enable HSPA:
1) Download/install the app LTE OnOff
2) Change Mobile Network type in Settings to LTE / GSM / UMTS
3) On LTE OnOff, hit the Three-Dot menu in the top right, and select "Select radio band"
4) Select USA Band
5) Hit the Turn Off Radio button
6) Select GSM auto (PRL) under Preferred Network Type
7) Turn On Radio
The phone should show no data for a second, then 3G, then eventually an H for HSPA will be displayed.
You can also try GSM only or WCDMA preferred if GSM auto doesn't work.
Still trying to figure out how to get LTE to play nice with it.
From here:

I think HSPA+ with 6MB down is plenty for anything we use on a daily basis. I'm debating about picking Droid Ultra Maxx to use on AT&T as well but all the reading about these issues is making me nervous. Moto X + 1 isn't getting here fast enough and I need the extra .3 inches
Edit: I found another link with app and steps:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2591954
I'm curious....won't the phone be a hot mess if you sell it....and have the seller demand a refund?
Here is an interesting observation I made today... I have an xt1060 with a straight talk at&t sim in it...

I thought this was kind of interesting...
I bought my Nexus 5 from Tmobile (north america), found out that I have very little (read: zero) coverage between my home and work, so I had to cancel. I went ahead and paid off the N5 and switched to AT&T.
Oddly enough, the myAT&T screen shows me as having a LG 821, which, I believe, is the international version!
I found that concerning as I thought Tmobile might have worked better for me if I had the correct phone... but my bootloader shows D820.
Anyone else have the same quark on their myAT&T page?

Funny - never noticed this before either, but AT&T reports mine as the 821 also.
I have the 820 model.

My wife and I both have Nexus 5's on at&t. I bought her's from google and mine from tmobile. Ours both show 821 too, but they are 820's. If they were 821's, you would have no LTE. Im in atlanta with lte everywhere.
LG 821 too, bought it from the Google store. I can use the wap.cingular apn only. No LTE for me.
LG821 here as well. I have LTE using attphone APN. I had a Galaxy S4 (LTE) before it, just kept that plan so it all works. Have to have had a LTE capable phone before you get the N5 for it to work properly with your plan to access LTE>

Do any of you get throttled on AT&T with the Nexus 5? I have the Galaxy Nexus, but a cracked screen and now water damage is making me purchase a new phone, and I have yet to be throttled while regularly using over 5G/month.
Thanks!
You only get throttled (or more accurately, your usage is only metered in the throttling system) when using PHONE or PTA apn. Using a galaxy nexus without lte, you're most likely on wap.cingular (which you can do on a phone with no lte). Once their system detects you're imei and determines you have an lte capable device, you're blocked from using wap.cingular, and this your usage will be monitored (as you'll need to use phone or pta). I can trick the system by putting my sim in my old non lte GS2 (i9100), doing "restore apns" then sim swapping back to my nexus 5. THEN I can use wap.cingular, but unfortunately after a day or two they do an imei sweep and I get locked out again On the bright side tmo just announced they'll be eliminating edge and upgrading everything to lte by 2015 so I'm looking forward to dumping ATT very soon.

No throttle. On 6gb family share plan now. I can get over 50mbit/s in SpeedTest with full LTE signal. 95% of the time I'm on WiFi so to boot LTE speeds don't really matter. My data usage last month was a whole 500mb.
Not sure if the International has a different structure for the ESN/IMEI but its quite possible the 821 is what they have in their system as the Nexus 5. They do have traveling customers on the device but more likely prepaid customers. Interesting one indeed.

He's asking about the UNLIMITED plan being throttled I'm sure, and yes it will after 5gb, unless you're on the wap.cingular apn as I described above.
I should mention that the Nexus 4 will NOT be blocked from wap.cingular as it does not have LTE, so if true unlimited data is that important maybe the Nexus 4 might be a better choice.

ATT sent me a message saying I would be throttled at 3GB even though I have "unlimited data", and being throttled sucks, its awful.

Should be 5gb on an LTE device. I'd call in with your imei to get put on an LTE unlimited plan if you're not already (hspa plans throttle after 3gb.). Note that you don't need to be on LTE or even have an LTE device, you just need any att compatible imei to give them so you're on the right plan.

I got mine from Google, it's the unlocked version, and AT&T is also saying it's an LG 821.
How Do I Check The Model Number?
Hi,
Bought my phone from Google Play. How do I check the model number other then the boot loader?
I checked in 'About Phone', can't find it.
Edit. XDA really has to stop ads from playing with audio with while on the site, drives me nuts.
I tried to use the phone on PTA or Phone APN but it only accepts wap.cingular, because I switched from a 3G phone. The CS rep said my plan is not compatible with LTE, and nothing can be done. I am stuck with HSPA. Oh well, the plus side, I am not throttled.

This is true in some cases. It depends on the person that sets your phone up. Search. When they provision the phone, some AT&T workers, since the Nexus 5 is officially not in their provisioning software, have to select a generic template. If they are smart and do the right thing, you get set up with a LTE capable provisioning for your phone that works perfect. Some however don't know what they are doing and set the phone up with a plan that cannot access 3G for whatever reason. It completely depends on the person provisioning your phone. With phones that are in AT&T's system that might be unlocked but are in their system, such as Galaxy S4 Google Edition or something, it works no problem since the S4 is in their system. However with "oddball" phones like ours that AT&T doesn't officially support you run into issues as some workers may not know how to handle them.
The problem I am having is with my T-Mobile sim in the Sprint nexus I get very weak UMTS/HSPA signal where I normally get full signal. Constantly dropping signal and what have you.
I also cannot get LTE. In LTE only mode, when I am outside where I get good LTE signal on my google play nexus 5 (capable of 30 megs down), the sprint nexus 5 sees every network except t-mobile's. I'm talking about the search for network menu, it shows AT&T almost always, shows verizon and metropcs' old network (311 660) and also shows sprint's lte network. All but T-Mobile's
So I decided I would swap out the antenna (the piece at the bottom held in by 4 screws that also has the loudspeaker attached to it).
With the sprint nexus' antenna in my google play nexus, everything works just fine in my google play nexus. With the google play nexus' antenna in the sprint nexus, nothings different and I cannot get LTE at all and weak HSPA.
it says "HH.SKU.1.0905" on my google play nexus 5, on the sprint one it says "HH.SKU.1.0816"
both hardware version 11. the water sticker on the sprint nexus is slightly pink, but i havent noticed any other problems
once i get in touch with my buddy who has sprint im gonna test his sim in this and see if i can get full signal LTE or what

Maybe i am wrong. But how could you expect a Sprint device to get GSM LTE? They(sprint) use different band and different technology for LTE than T-Mobile's.
I already mod my sprint lg g2 and galaxy s4 to work on att 3g network. But there is no way they could get att LTE. No a chance. It is hardware difference.
You could unlock a att device to work on T-Mobile LTE. But not a sprint device. Physically can't dow

If everythings configured the same, probably some other fault in the device. I'm not entirely sure what antenna you removed but are you sure it's the right one?

I am extremely frustrated and fed up with ATT customer service on the phone and in the stores. I talked to 3 different persons and none was able to setup my phone for data neither HSPA nor LTE. The BS that I have to listen to is incredible and I am close to terminating my contract. I am pretty sure the issue is that the IMEI of my phone doesn't get recognized by the system and I asked them to change it to an ATT one but they don't do it.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
I remember having to do this when I purchased my Nexus 5; this is solved by simply "borrowing" the IMEI of one of the LTE smartphones in the showroom at the store. If there is a ATT Moto X 2014, even better. Just go to that phone's setting and take a photo of the IMEI, then go to the desk and give them that number. It will be recognized and you will be set.
No need to worry about borrowing the IMEI from another phone, it is just to look up the specs for their system. I haven't tested it myself with a Moto X though as I still have a Nexus 5 but you should have no trouble.
Found a fix!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just got my Pure Edition yesterday and wasn't able to get any AT&T data plan either, even after a half hour talk with customer support. Then I found a help article on the AT&T site for setting up unlocked phones. You have to set up a new access point. I can't post links, and one of the settings is a url, so I can't post that either. Google "Programming non-AT&T devices with the correct APN and MMS data settings" and hopefully it will work. If someone who can post links could post on to the article, that would be awesome!
Here is the standard ATT Phone apn

In my case I had to do more. I had to generate the new APN and I had to use an IMEI from an old LTE AT&T phone that I just still had. The problem was the switch to the new nanoSim in combiantion with the IMEI of my MotoX. Now everything is fine.
I'm hoping that I can take the SIM card out of my old Moto X and put it into the new 2014 moto X no strings Attached......*hoping*

I can say that I had this problem as well. Voice but no data. Added the custom APN, and that got me 4G, but no LTE. Apparently, ATT does not recognize this phone's IMEI as a LTE capable phone. Had to give them the IMEI off my HTC One M7, code it as LTE, reboot my phone twice, and then it came up as 4GLTE. Just FYI.

Had to give them the IMEI off my HTC One M7, code it as LTE, reboot my phone twice, and then it came up as 4GLTE. Just FYI.

That could explain why my data signal has been terrible. Sadly, I don't have a previous ATT phone.
Yep, I ended up creating a new APN and gave them my nexus 5 IMEI for LTE to connect. Not sure why the nexus 5 works since they don't sell that phone either...
Think moto needs to hand over all the IMEI for AT&Ts database... :/

I got a friends imei and registered it. I switched back to the original APN and am getting a better signal and speeds with the nxtgenphone APN.
AT&T now aware of the problem and working on solution. Switching IMEI number is not the long term solution.
There is a case number and we should all get LTE within a few days. Unfortunately, it is the weekend so will take longer for them to approve the Pure Edition (showing as Moto Victara in AT&T system) as non LTE.

I wouldn't get my hopes up on a quick resolution. When they initially opened a ticket for when I signed up for service yesterday, they told me not to worry about not having data and that they would resolve the ticket by the 30th.

Getting 4G is easy by manually setting APN. The hard part is getting LTE without giving them a different IMEI.

Yes, getting data was easy. Yet ATT support had no idea how to even get me data. They passed me up to tier 2 support while I was in the store with them and then told me to leave with the new phone and wait a few hours because it should fix itself. Thankfully, I found people mentioning the APN change to get the hspa+ and was able to get that temporarily as I've been with Verizon and Sprint in the past I didn't know about this offhand. My initial ticket for ATT to even get me data on my new service plan was set to be resolved in 5 days. If something as simple as that had that long of a time frame, I wouldn't count on a quick turn around for this issue.
Odd, I have not had any issues with the stock APN. I switch phones so often I can't even tell you what provisions they have me on at this point but data has worked fine on every phone I have had without changing anything on the phone or AT&T's end. I have been on a Nano sim for a long time though, I just used Sim adapters when I have non-nano slots. They set everything up on a new one for the iPhone 6 plus though, maybe its compatible?
I simply swapped the SIM from my old Moto X to my new Pure Edition Moto X on AT&T and everything works fine... Not sure why you guys are having issues.
Guys..
His issue is that ATT is using the imei from the pure edition moto x.
Since ATT doesn't really do byod (not an ATT branded device) he doesn't get lte.
So the AT&T Note 4 is locked down pretty good. Is the T-Mobile version the best version to get to use on AT&T for somebody who wants root? It looks like it has all of the HSPA and LTE bands, so it should work perfectly. Are any of the international versions better options than the T-Mobile version?
Or is T-Mobile the best one for AT&T? Thanks.
Tmo note 4 works great on AT&T. I buy all my phones from Tmo to use on AT&T.

How do you buy them? Can you just walk into a T-Mobile store and buy one even with no T-Mobile account?

From another thread in q&a:
I bought the phone. It was a bit of a process but easy. You have to have a service plan for them to sell you one. So I signed up for the phone and the cheapest plan they would get me. Then went home and called Tmobile customer care and paid the balance of the phone off. Then went to cellunlocker and got an unlock code. Then for the next day or so I used it on AT&T to make sure it had no problems. Then I called up Tmobile and canceled my plan with them.

I have both AT&T and t mobile note 4. If you want root, you already know what you have to do. The only issue I have ran into is my t mobile version shows up as a blackberry on AT&T network. Took multiple calls to get LTE working correctly. They had to switch my number to a tri band (there verbage not mine) to properly get LTE, even though it still shows up as a RIM device. The fastest LTE I've had in my area is 32mbs with a iPhone next to me getting 64mbs, but also that's not comparing apples to apples (pun intended). But the iPhone also had a stronger radio inside compared to samsung.

Hey Sandman7793, if you dont mind, could you please explain how exactly you got AT&T to make the changes in order for you to get LTE working on your Tmobile Note 4? I mean did you have to speak to multiple reps on the same phone call? Reason I ask is becuase I had a Tmobile Note 3 and was only getting HSPA using AT&T and when I called they gave me a hard time saying that I couldnt get LTE becuase I was using an unlocked device. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!

Well the trick was I bought the AT&T version of the note 4 before I bought the t-mobile one. So when I called I had my sim card in the AT&T one when I called. Lol. I have my spare note 4 in the drawer just lying around. When I called they was like, do you have a blackberry, I said no, do people actually use those anymore. Since I have my note on the next program they was like OK no problem. Then they said, is your phone for AT&T network, I said it better be because I bought it from you. Then I rebooted the phone so they could hear the AT&T boot up sound. They had me put in a new APN setting, still no LTE (on the AT&T phone at that) so they escalated the case over to someone else and changed a bunch of settings on there end. Then said maybe they had LTE issues in my area, I said nope I have a iPhone sitting next to me with full LTE. By the time I hung up, the AT&T note 4 had zero LTE and the t-mobile had full LTE, which still till this day I have no clue how that worked out. It still shows a blackberry on my account, but here was my speed earlier so it don't matter to me what the show.

Did you have a chance to test speeds in your area with both phones connected to both carriers? I am going through a dilemma right now as to which carrier I should choose to go with.

yes it is, Mine is on Tmobile( white) unlocked and it is rooted and i'm using it on ATT(sim card from work) i get full speed LTE and one of samsung best yet. other variants are not that great

I went to change my data plan today, finally giving up Unlimited because it was $50 cheaper to go Mobile Share route. In the process I noticed my new TM Note 4 showed up as a Blackberry 7100 and during the online plan change it wouldn't let me do it saying something about an incompatible phone. I reloaded the Sim back in my Note 2, called CS, had then change the plan and of course it now shows a "Smartphone" for my Note 2.
So, I suppose as soon as I change me SIM back to the Note 4 it'll send them the IMEI and change the phone designation back to Blackberry, thusly kicking me off LTE.
Can other enlighten me as what steps to take when/if that happens? Since it's a Note 2, not Note 4, I can't take the approach quite the same as the OP.
What to do? Anyone?

Mine shows as a blackberry also, but after they activated tri-band on my account for my line, all is good with full service.
AT&T used to have two places to store imei. One is dynamic and shows device that is currently on their network and the other is somewhere permanently in the database and is imei used to register account. Second (permanent) one determines whether you get LTE. It was like that year ago when I parted with post paid plans. May be they changed it since. So you must make them replace the permanent db imei to get LTE. Best way to do it is to call them with valid AT&T LTE capable device imei and tell them that it's what you use now.

My AT&T account shows a flip phone for my TMO Note 4! LOL! Everything is fine and working though so I dont care.
I run my T-Mobile Note 4 on "Cricket Wireless" which uses AT&T towers w/ a reduced cost (based on your needs of course).. Data, ect...
Very pleased & things work 100%!
I even figured out how to 'edit' build.prop per the "Root & Recovery" thread to give me official "cricket" initial confirmation readout in status upon waking phone along with AT&T tower indicators as opposed to T-Mobile's!
I bet Hotspot will not work on ATT when you use T-mobile phone.
I bet Wifi calling will not work on ATT network too.

Hotspot works great. Actually It works even better, becuase ATT can't track the usage on a Tmobile phone so even without root or doing anything special the wifi hotspot works right out of the box.

This Pixel 7 is the first 5G capable phone I have owned. The 5G is so slow as to be unusable. I am in middle Tennessee and RedPocket is my provider, using the AT&T network. I have disabled 5G and my speed/connection is very good.
When 5G is enabled I do have a strong signal according to the signal meter icon. But pages load in "spurts". The browser will take several seconds to make the initial connection and then as the page loads it will pause while more data is downloaded. Using 4G pages load very quickly.
Is this because I'm using a MVNO (RedPocket) or is something else going on?

It could be either or both. MVNOs are de-prioritized which, depending on the network traffic where you are, could mean terrible speeds or speeds just as good as the provider's tier one post-pay accounts.
I, too, am new to 5G and using Boost (an AT&T MVNO) until the trial period runs out and I move to Mint (TMO). My 5G performance is fine; it's not faster or slower than the exact same 4G service from my Pixel 3.
I'm going to give Tello Mobile a try. They use the Tmobile network. I will report back.
I got activated with Tello using an esim. I've only used them a few minutes but everything looks good so far.
The issue with AT&T is that they don't use all of their brands for 5G so LTE can be much faster than 5G. T-Mobile has crazy good 5G speeds if you live where they have midband. I have Tello as well as SafeLink on AT&T and I have found that AT&T has better latency, T-Mobile has much better speeds, and AT&T tends to have the stronger signal in the Denver area as well.
I use my SafeLink pSIM for data and the Tello eSIM for everything else usually.
This was on my drive home over the weekend, going through Joplin, MO. Not too bad in a larger city. My P6 didn't hit 100 down just 2 weeks ago at the same spot.

No problems here, with Cosmote carrier in Greece.
I would raise the issue of low speeds with my carrier
Apparently there was an update needed, my speed on the AT&T network is now as expected. I did not change anything (that I know of). I'm going to stick with RedPocket rather than Tello due to better coverage in my area with AT&T.

Indeed. But 1Gbit in the air, is fine for me.
Just got the pixel 7 and my 5G is all over the place. I get 1 bar 5G UC, indicating poor signal but will go to full bars from time to time. Whats weird is that if i make a call or receive a call it will jump to full bars. If i switch from wifi to mobile or restart the phone it will give me full bars and drop to 1 bar soon after.
I've called tmobile and they had me upgrade to a new 5G sim but it didnt fix anything. My previous phone was OnePlus 8t 5G and had no issues with 5G. All other 5g phones at home get full bars, the tmobile tower is about 50 yards from my home.
Thinking about returning the phone and keeping the One Plus until Pixel 8 or until Pixel 7 issues are sorted out. I might try to get another Pixel 7 sent to me try out. This P7 has a August build date, maybe a more recent build will not have this issue.
After my Tello experiment my AT&T started working reliably. I would say give it a day and see if it gets sorted out.

Is your service usable? Are your speeds acceptable? Bars mean nothing. We really should get rid of them in favor of something that just shows whether you have a network connection or not because these days with multiple carrier aggregation, bars are never correct.

Boost was Sprint, which has been swallowed up by T-Mobile and that CDMA network shut down. At this point Boost is T-Mobile, not ATT. If the phone you purchased was factory unlocked then you have been using 5G since day one, unless it defaults to 4G. If the phone is ATT phone then you would be better served by Cricket which uses the ATT network. Since you have a Google device why not go with Google Fi their plans are nominally priced. Although when they first started offering service they were trying to be something for everyone by using all gsm services. Most coverage is by T-MOBILE today.

Boost offers AT&T as well...
If you order from www.boostmobile.com it is T-Mobile. If you order from my.boostmobile.com or deals.boostmobile.com, it is AT&T. You can also tell by your SIM card - if it's orange or white, it's T-Mobile. If it's black, it's AT&T.
Boost's AT&T SIM even has one of the best deals around right now - 30GB for $25 a month with no need to buy multiple months and unlimited at 512kbps after that (which is actually usable). They even have an app that lets you watch ads and spin the prize wheel each day towards free service plus third party offers like installing and playing games. I've already racked up $38 worth of bill credits since I signed up on the 27th.

It's weird that so many have reported this while so many of us have reported we don't have that problem. I have tried the phone on three different networks and have been pleased with the modem. I have the Pro though, maybe there's something different with the reception although I've seen complaints about it too.
I'm pulling almost 1200 mbps on TMobile by my house on p7.
I turned off 5G altogether and just use LTE because I was having intermittent data connection issues. I haven't had any connection issues since turning 5G off. Sucks but it is what it is, I guess. I'm on T-Mobile in a high 5G area as well.
AT&T may throttle your provider speed during peak time...test the area at different time of the day and see...why own this phone and use 4G or LTE...it almost a sin
