[Q] Hard Brick G900A: How to boot from extSdCard? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

Is there a way to boot from the external sdcard without dismantling the phone and finding the strap?
Thanks!

Does the phone power on at all? Can you get into download mode or recovery? Also, everyone is going to want know how did you hard brick it, since your phone might be the first?

How i hard bricked my G900A
Well, i was using EFS Pro to backup my phone.
Everything went fine.
Afterwards i did a system + boot install from G900M so i could have it in my language. Went fine also.
I managed to save all stuff.
Then i reflashed to factory to restore the phone and wanted to check if my backups were fine.
But i forgot to uncheck the all partitions and when it started to flash cache it got stucked. Nothing works anymore.
Now phone is a total brick.
I managed to make a sdcard for recovery, but phone will not boot from the sd.

USB jig maybe?
The Gods Approve This Post, From The Ghost Of Sparta's S5 active.

USB jig should put you in download mode, and you could reflash whatever, or take out the battery, put it back in. Then put your USB cable in and try to go into recovery mode. Try doing it all at the same time, USB cable, and the recovery mode/download mode.

I do not think you are understanding.
I have a jig in my pocket alread for some years, this is NOT the problem.
Supose i did a nand erase, so there is nothing to boot from. Flash or Bios is BLANK, Gone, Kaput!
So i need to boot either from the USB or from the extSd.
I'm trying to find a solution for this, and may help all.
Please don't say to me to take the phone to repair... because i am the repair man.

I'm not sure but maybe there's a way to push the recovery and boot.img using adb. Hope you figure it out:what:

No one has made a debrick image yet for this phone, because almost no one has hard bricked. Unless you somehow create a debrick.img image for your sdcard yourself, then you are pretty much out of luck.

It is NOT hard bricked if it powers on, soft brick is what it is. If you can use the jiig and it gets into download mode, you can recover. Looks as if you have a corrupt bootloader, does ODIN see the device at all?

I am having some Soft brick issues. I have tried multiple versions of ODIN and Kies. I have even tried to update from the stock recovery mode in the phone from the exsdcard. nothing seems to work.
Odin only gets so far then tells me it failed. tried flashing stock and others. Bunked up my phone good i think.
Any Help?
is there a firmware update that I can apply from the exsdcard via the recovery mode? I get to the Samsung Galaxy S5 screen then it sits there. even let it sit over night to see if it just needed extra time.
I have been using the USB cable that came with the phone.

Reading through the XDA portal posts, I did see this solution. Not for our S5, but supposedly this method should work for most phones. Worth taking a look at anyway just to find out. Maybe someone could make it work.

I guess I'm soft-bricked by everyone's definition.
I have an att s5 g900a. Towelroot, safestrap, backed up to extSD, DLed the Nuclearfallout rom from the s5 att development forums, moved it to extSD(I moved it twice I think, because I didn't unzip one beforehand.) When I needed to boot from ext sd after wiping all data, I accidentally just "booted system" I believe. I'm stuck in a bootloop, but I can get into recovery and download mode. Admittedly, I'ma n00b. This is my first root, and everything else. In recovery mode, I can get into a bunch of stuff, but nothing does anything. nothing. I can get into DL mode. It just says downloading from source I think. Anyone know how I can even get my backup back on there? If I can learn that, I can try to get some custom roms myself afterward. I hope this is a good place to put this question, because I have been having a hell of a time even searching for my question. It could be that the answers aren't out there yet, but I was thinking maybe I don't know some of the jargon to ask my question correctly. If anyone has any questions, I can try and answer, but I don't know how much help i'll be. Here's a few pieces of info that I thought might help:
It is the ATT G900A, but I paid it in full as a GO phone up front, and switched it to straight talk after my first month.
It's possible that the 2nd Nuclearfallout was still zipped as well.
I made 2 backups with safestrap, and saved them to extSD. They were rooted and unlocked when I made them.(Leads me to think it's possible to get some program, script, or something to boot into my backup.
I literally clicked on every single thing in recovery mode. They all just took me to .__// or whatever it shows at the bottom of each folder stack. If it isn't there, DL mode is my only bet right?
Thanks for the help if you got it folks!!!

When in safestrap and ready to wipe did you check all the boxes?? By the way you are NOT in a hard brick if that was the case you'd not be able to get into Download or stock recovery. Hard brick are black screen with no action at all when pressing buttons. Basically a paperweight and worthless.

I did not check the external sd card box when I wiped. The problem I'm now having is that I can't get odin to recognize my phone. I'm about to redownload, and try again. I was going to just put a new rom on the internal, but I can't egt anywhere til I get through this odin issue.

The reason Odin doesn't recognize your phone is because you didn't have developer options open and debugging selected. when you boot SafeStrap screen doesn't come up? You don't try to get into recovery by the traditional method that's just stock recovery which won't do you any good

[q] help i messed up big time

Help!
I have 2.2 on Rogers, rooted. I also have Cognition 3.04 installed as well as CWM. I tried to install a battery mod .zip file using CWM, but all that is happening now is that I am stuck on the startup screen (Cognition) and my Captivate just vibrates! In recovery using CWM 'reboot now' and 'reboot recovery' doesn't work. Is there anyway to 'bypass' my last (failed) installed .zip and go back to the home screen?
WHAT DO I DO? I have tried to use the recovery_update.zip file from CWM to get my phone working again but still no luck.
I SWEAR IF SOMEONE CAN HELP ME I WILL NEVER EVER TAMPER WITH MY PHONE AGAIN EVER. I WILL ONLY EVER USE IT FOR PHONE CALLS AND TEXTING. I WILL DO ANYTHING. PLEASE HELP!!!!
Can you get it into download mode?
If you can get back into recovery which it sound like you can just reflash the original rom zip.

Edit....and calm down, just a boot loop from a bad flash, no biggie. Though you should understand how to recover before you start.

How do I flash the original ROM when I can't get past the recovery screen? Could you please provide instructions? I am so scared! AAAARGH!

I think it's 10.11. th eonly other numbers are the IMEI, s/n and upc numbers.

ok, 1011 means build date is Nov 2010. you should just follow the link below to restore your phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10056254&postcount=36
Since you can go into download mode, do not worry, you should be fine in just a few minutes.
You can either download Designgears Odin One Click where baiscally you put it into DOWNLOAD ** and click "flash" or w.e and it puts your phone back to stock or you can use a new tool http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=944418 < dont know how that is have never treid. Basically theyre both one click so shouldnt be too hard.
steps r put ur phone into DOWNLOAD MODE aka, shut off phone take of sim + microsd if you have any, then put battery back in, while holding both volume buttons pressed, plug in USB cable (MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ODIN OPENED FIRST), once your in the recovery screen you should see the COM:12 or something like that on odin (also make sure you have samsung usb drivers installed.)
press flash and should put it back to stock. IF THAT DOESNT WORK, you MIGHT have an internal SD card that is dead. then your phone is useless(never had this happen to me on captivate, just on vibrant i9000m)
Good luck.

Thanks so much for th ehelp so far, what I am worried about is flashing it to i897 (AT&T) instead of i896 (Rogers) which has happened before. When that happened the phoen refused to recognize my SIM card, etc and I had to bring it back into the store to be shipped back to the factory, etc.
Any idea if this will bring me to i897 or i896?

[Q] SS AT&T Captivate stuck on ATT Splash Screen

Hi, I have a SS/ATT Galaxy S. It was working fine. I made the mistake of running an update to change the ATT splash screen. The device boots to the ATT splash screens and stays there. You can hear the SS start up sounds as though the unit booted ok.
I've tried various Odins they all hang on file analysis. I've tried using different computers per the recommendations in the various threads. I've tried many of the one click and also separate file updaters. They all hang on file analysis.
I am able to use Droid explorer to view the device. I've also put a new update.zip on an sd card but nothing seems to change the splash screen.
I'm not sure how to tell what version the unit is currently on.
I can get to the 3 button state. It says Android System recovery <2e>.
I have the options to reboot, reinstall packages, delete all user data and delete cache data. I've tried each of them, no change.
I have tried to read many threads before bothering anyone. Your input would be appreciated.
Thanks
if you have the update.zip on your phone, in the root of your SD card.. then from 2eRecovery, select reinstall packages.. may have to do it twice. That will boot your phone into clockworkmod recovery.. and from there you should be able to mount storage- put a ROM on your device, flash and be good to go.
Reply to thread
Hi, Thanks for the fast response. I've tried update.zip on both an sd card and also via droid explorer, about 5 times. If I reboot, same thing, the ATT splash is there, and the Galaxy boot sound. I can get into recovery and droid explorer works. If I try Odin it hangs on file analysis. Anything else I can try? Thanks again.
Are you in dl mode when you try this, or recovery?
The phone is now bricked. I was in recovery mode as I saw the 3 button posts on holding the up/down and pwr. I just tried it with dl mode and odin3 and bricked it.(based on another forum's input to check repartition I think). Now it won't boot at all but I'm still able to get to dl mode but not sure what to run to fully recover.

If you can get to dl mode try using AIO Captivate to flash back to stock 2.1. I've had success as I flashed with the partition checked and had to go all the way back using ODIN contained in the AIO Captivate program. Found here

Yeah if you can get into download mode than you are not bricked. I would Odin or Heim back to JF6 and go from there. What happened when you tried reinstalling packages from 2e? I know you said everytime you reboot- but what did it say when selected reinstall packages?

Yeah, it was quite scary. I actually purchased some 100k resistors on Ebay but didn't need to make the jig.
Can you recommend a good set of f/w to load? Is it worth it to move to 2.3?

+1.
I had to make a jig when I soft bricked it. Not fun. Since then I purchased one and am glad I did.
Well, that means I won't have wasted my $2.00.
I saw this and thought it worth to try. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0aoabVtPJ8
In your footer, it says you're using mosaic.
e.g. ROM: Mosaic III, ¤Kernel: Xcal's #14, ¤Modem: JK4, ¤Launcher: ADW Ex
Can you point me to the correct files/process? I guess I'm scared of screwing it up again. when I look on the forum there's almost too much info for a noob to choose which is best. Cheers...

[Q] Possible Hard Brick

Was trying to flash to 2.3.3 from my Phoenix ROM. It froze at setup connection for about 30mins so I battery pulled and read about the disabled 3 button users should go back to stock 2.1 before flashing to GB, so I attempted to use OneClick Odin. It was stuck at sbl.bin(bootload file if im not mistaken). I waited and battery pulled again. When I press power nothing happens, however I can still get into DL mode. Should I keep trying to use oneclick, or is the phone shot?
Holy poop! You can get into download mode! That's, well not lucky I guess, cause its all F'ed up atm, but you are not bricked.
Make sure the chord is good, and its plugged into the back of the pc, if it already is switch ports, reboot and try again.
Use this package http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995143 it doesn't have any bootloaders so bricking is very very difficult.
Good luck.
Downloading it now, if it works, you're a genius. If it doesn't work...well, lets be serious, you're a member of Phoenix: you're still a genius
Will update in a bit.

Awww ... Warm and fuzzies! Thanks man, but I'm really nothing special learned everything by reading xda.
Ok back on topic. You got really lucky you're right sbl.bin is a bootloader your risk of brick was pretty high ... But you got into download mode after ... Any sign of life is not a brick. I'm 99% certain this will work. Only reason it won't is, your connection is faulty somewhere in the chain. But with that package it can't get any worse than it is.
Thank you very much! Got it to actually boot into recovery. I assume I can now insert my SD and apply the stock update.zip? Since it wont actually boot to the phone menu screen?
I'm not sure what's in the update.zip you still have the gb bootloaders if it has just one froyo bootloader and not both, you will brick the phone. Look in the update folder of that zip, if you see only boot.bin or only sbl.bin don't flash it. If you see both or neither its ok. Although I would just use that odin package I linked you to.
I did use the Odin package you linked. Thats how it was able to boot into recovery and also clockwork recovery, but it just wont full boot. I cant view anything thats on the internal memory card, so I cant see the update.zip files. Ive heard you can access the memory card from recovery by mounting it through CWM and accessing it through ADB however I have yet to be able to get my computer to recognize my phone during recovery mode.
Edit: After playing around a bit with uninstalling/reinstalling drivers, got odin to work and its back to stock! thanks again stud
Now to try to 2.3 it again lol

not good....

I think I might have done it, this time. I installed RebelROM on my phone, as I was curious if it would be more battery friendly. I decided that it wasn't, and went to reboot into recovery to reinstall the nandroid I had made earlier in the afternoon. Oops. My only available recovery was CWM, not TWRP. No problem, I thought, I will just reinstall with CWM. Give me a chance to learn the new recovery, I thought. But, CWM wasn't seeing my external SD card, so I went back and forth to move the nandroid I had made to the internal SD, so CWM could see it. I also installed TWRP to the internal SD, as CWM was proving to be a pain. Unfortunately, TWRP wasn't able to access my internal SD, where the nandroid was now stored, so I tried to recover into an older nandroid. Now, though, the phone won't boot at all, past the screen that describes the phone as an Exhibit from T-Mobile. I can't boot back into recovery. I can't access the drives through the USB cord, either. Any suggestions? Skyukillparanormal has disappeared. Ironically, I'm up in his neck of the woods. Any assistance would be appreciated.

I can't access the drives through the USB cord, either. Any suggestions? Skyukillparanormal has disappeared. Ironically, I'm up in his neck of the woods. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Pull the battery. After replacing, push down the power button and volume up at the same time. Hole them down for a few seconds. CWM should reappear. Either restore your recovery if it was CWM created or reflash the ROM.

Unfortunately, AD, CWM is not reappearing. I had been holding down the power and volume down keys to no avail. Now I know why. It seems, though, that the power/volume up combo has the same (lack of) effect. Am I screwed?

If that isn't working there are more serious problems. Try 2 or 3 times as it doesn't always work the first time. You can try ODIN but it's for advanced users. If you don't know how to use it probably not the best option. I hope you didn't brick your recovery because in that case that's the only option that will save you.

I tried multiple times. I was thinking ODIN might be my only option, but I would never do that myself. I will have to do some research to learn if there is someone near where I am now, or where I live. Thanks for your help. I thought we'd lost you to the S2 fora....

Well soon that will be the case but not yet! Anyway here the link to get ODIN: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2012979&d=1370213005
Instructions here:
2. With your phone powered off, go into the Download (or Odin) mode by pressing the volume down and power buttons. When the screen with the exclamation mark appears, select the volume up button. You should now be in download mode.
3. Connect your Galaxy Exhibit to your PC.
3. Open Odin Multi Downloader v4.43.exe on your PC.
4. click on the OPS-Button and navigate to the folder with the extracted files and select Ancora.ops file.
5. Select the options: One Package, Protect OPS. I did not touch the Auto Reboot, Reset Time options.
6.Click on the One Package-Button and select the md5 file in the extracted folder.
7. Click on the Start button. The flashing process took around 5 minutes for me, at which point the phone rebooted into recovery mode to finish the process. I selected reboot the system.
ODIN flashable CWM here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1962398&d=1368560948
If you do this, keep in mind I can't be responsible for the results. Otherwise then yes, seek assistance from somebody who can help you in person.

Thank you for the link, but I can already tell that there will be a problem with that solution, as well. I tried over and over to press the power volume down button. I never saw a screen with an exclamation point. I never see anything until I release both buttons, at which point it starts up normally, but like I said, freezes before the rom loads, or before loading any recovery. There seems to be no difference if I hold down the vol up or the vol down button.

Just like CWM, it can take a few tries. Yeah I know that gets old but sometimes it's taken me 4 or 5 attempts before I can get the phone into download mode. Don't give up until you're sure there is nothing to be done. It really just sounds like a soft brick to me.
Maybe if all else fails just say the hell with it, and if you can, get the Galaxy Light on HSN ($150). They'll let you pay in installments if you can't/don't want to pay all at once. You won't be able to root it just yet since it's new, but man maybe it's for the best. At least you will not be able to brick that phone! It has JB on it anyway.

Soft brick is what I was thinking, too.
Man, that Galaxy Light is perfect! I have been looking for exactly that phone for a while. When did it come out? And paying in installments makes it even better. Plus, I've now learned my lesson. When I do root that phone, I will be more careful about my flashaholic tendencies. If I get it, that is. We'll have to see.

Came out in just the past couple of months. The hardware is so much better than the Exhibit. Again keep in mind, there presently is no way to root it and there are no custom ROMs right now. Activity on XDA for this device has been pretty light, only downside to this phone and the main reason I passed on it.

I understand about there being no xda activity. That's a consideration. With 8 GB of internal storage _plus_ a removable SD card, though, I can't see bloatware being a problem for a bit. By then, the Slimroms guys will have gotten ahold of it and put together something, I am sure. Can I live with stock jb? Can I even pick this up? Hmmmmmm...... Food for thought.

sorry, AD. I have one more question. Once I reboot into recovery mode, can I just reflash a nandroid, or do I have to reload the rom and kernel again?

You should be able to restore the nandroid. Since you have CWM working again, you can always do a full wipe & flash the ROM again if that doesn't work.

I got everything going to the point where I was to select the md5 file. There was no md5 file in the Odin folder I downloaded and extracted. Where should I look for the md5 file to restart the phone? It also seems that ODIN doesn't recognize that the phone is connected. The phone says it's in ODIN mode, but the program isn't showing any indication that the phone is connected. Thanks.

Wow, then that means you don't have the Samsung drivers installed. This is getting more complicated. You'll have to have the drivers installed for this device. Unfortunately it might be too late because after you get them installed to your PC, you have to connect your phone and it would have to be in a usable state for the drivers to finish installing if I remember correctly.
Anyay you can still try it, here's the drivers you need: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SGH-T679DBBTMB?
it sure is nice being able to reach out and having people give assistance. thanks guys.

Actually, all is not lost. The drivers have been located and installed and the phone is now detected. Exactly which boxes are checked on the ODIN panel? You had mentioned that you didn't touch two of them (Protect OPS and Reset Time, I believe), but those were already selected when the program started. Right now, all 4 options are selected. Is the CWM .tar file all you need for the One Package link, or is there something else?

No the CWM file is all you need. After you flash that you're done.

Error message saying an unnamed file was not found and operation terminated...
edit-never mind. it's fine. it's doing its thing....
It says "pass" and the 5 min timer is done, but the phone has not rebooted. Is there something else I need to do? Auto-reboot is selected, but it doesn't seem to be booting. Thanks.

bricked....

Hi so I was trying to use CF to root my phone and ended up screwing it somehow and bricked. I thought I'd followed the instructions well enough but I obviously did something wrong. Now my phone is stuck saying it needs to recover with Kies. This is my first Samsung phone but I'm not new to Android.
I tried installing the stock firmware through ODIN but everytime I flash it gets to installing the system ext4 and fails. I also wasn't able to recover using Kies(not even sure how you use it tbh).
If anyone could help me it would be mucho appreciated. I'm pretty pissed at myself right now.

Your phone is NOT bricked. If it was the screen would not even go on.
Have you tried going into recovery mode (VolumeUP/VolDown/PowerButton)
and once in Recovery Mode do a factory reset or Data Reset forgot what the
exact wording is in the stock recovery.
If you flashed twrp recovery it's ok too, just select "factory reset".
After doing that the phone should no longer display anything about Kies.
If you get to the twrp recovery screen you should be able to flash a stock
rooted rom without any issues.
If all you get is the stock recovery screen then you should be able to odin
flash the official Samsung Note 4 kitkat 4.4.4 NJ7 firmware which you may
need to download the firmware from http://SamMobile.com if you don't
already have it. (be sure you have the correct firmware for the Note 4 N910T).
Be 100% sure that the phone is FULLY POWERED DOWN before going
into Download Mode to avoid odin errors and issues.
Good luck!
Thanks man. I had tried Odin at my office and nothing doing.
Got home took my time and was real calm about things and voila. May have been an md5 issue with the firmware file. Just relieved I didn't have to RMA it.

Can you check for the file with md5 before you flash from your phone? I forgot where to dig for this info.
All I I have done before is on my cook rom file, I just open it with WinRAR and test for error. If no error, then its good.
On my Home PC I have a program that will put a check mark next to a file if it matches the md5. I also have Winrar at home.
I was just using the default Windows zip program and I have had problems with that and installers/roms in the past.
The only other things I did different were I removed the SD card and installed the drivers before plugging my phone in instead of letting Windows download them automatically.
I also removed the battery after I left work so it was out of the phone for a couple of hours.
The final thing I did was calm down lol after the initial shock of seeing a softbricked screen on my brand new phone.
I'm all rooted now with TWRP and running Hyperdrive so it's all smooth sailing from this point forward.
You should check md5 on phone once you done transferred to phone from PC
