TL ; DR: Splash stuck on restart, "Mount attempt 1/2/3/4/5... Unable to mount SD card message" in recovery mode, need to access storage to retrieve files I'd rather not lose, is there any way to plug into a computer with the device in boot or recovery mode to access my files?
Long verson:
I haven't rooted my phone or downloaded any weird or strange apps. I didn't recently update or load or add or install anything new to my phone, nor did I drop it hard. Nothing new or different happened, I just decided to restart my phone before bed, and now it doesn't work. The HTC ONE splash pops up, then the AT&T logo appears: Typically it goes through a small animation, but now instead it's just the logo and an animated glare practically indiscernibly moves a couple of pixels across the logo (like it's a lagging GIF). Before the glare moves completely across the logo, the phone restarts and the so does the process.
I can access recovery mode and when I do I get the "Mount attempt 1/2/3/4/5... Unable to mount SD card message". So I guess the only thing left for me to do is try factory reset, but there are a couple files I want off the device if I can manage that. I was hoping to be able to USB plug into my computer into recovery mode and access the storage like a portable hdd but I can't figure out which mode to go into or if its even possible.
Suggestions?

do you have a custom recovery installed? If yes you can use adb pull to copy your file to your pc.

nope, he doesn't the message "Mount attempt 1/2/3/4/5... Unable to mount SD card message" is stock recovery
EDIT: and if he unlocks bootloader using HTCdev, that will completely wipe his phone, I know you know, but the OP probably doesnt

You're right, I didn't know that.
I just finished going into recovery mode and wiping data/factory reset option anyway, giving up accessing the files I needed, and the same thing is happening. HTC ONE logo, switch to AT&T logo with a laggy glare animation, auto restart and the process restarts again. Is there anything I can do to allievate this problem?

First, some background:
I've had the S for 2 months now and about a month ago I applied JG5/Modaco r2 and Mimocam lag fix. All was well, 1800+ benchmark figures and no lag at all. That was until a few days ago....
As I was reading on the device, a number of errors started to pop up, force closes, etc. It stopped responding completely so I took the battery out and rebooted. Straight away I was hit with multiple force close and 'process stopped unexpectedly' messages. Basically, it was an unusable brick.
When I took the SD card out the errors were different so, figuring it was related to the Mimocam fix, I decided to undo it. I removed the symlink to the sd card and copied everything to the local data directory.
That didn't work, so I did a hard reset. Which also didn't work. Worse than that, I now can't get the phone to connect in any way to the PC so can't reflash and I can't access any settings on the phone because the error messages keep appearing and obscuring the screen.
Last thing I tried was repartitioning the SD card to see if the ext3 partition was corrupt and that hasn't helped either.
Which is where I am now. What I really want to do is wipe the internal SD and effect a total factory reset but I can't think of any way to do it. I can't access the phone through adb (device not found), Kies (keeps trying to connect but never does) and I can't do it through the phone. I also can't send it back because it has 'flashed rom' written all over it, especially when a root request pops up in the background.
I'm all out of ideas, short of trying to degauss it somehow.
Help! Please!

Or recovery mode: format sd card, clear cache etc ?
Turn the phone off, hold Home + Vol -, then press Power.
I don't see how you can get error messages there...
Doesn't work, I can't get it in to recovery mode. Neither vol up or down work using the 3 button hold. I've tried repeatedly and it just boots as normal, although the animation doesn't display while it boots but it does play the audio.
So I take it I'm f***ed then?
bumping this up and subscribing. I hope you find a solution soon, man.
if you know what your firmware was, get it from samsung-firmwares, get odin, and flash your phone. maybe that will solve your problem.
Keep in mind that I wont be responsible if your phone gets bricked if you mess up the procedure (however the chances of it being bricked is very less if you follow the instructions properly).
search the forum for flashing via odin.

He said he cant get it into download mode so would be quite hard to flash with odin then...
No, I've tried over and over and d/l mode doesn't work. The phone just reboots.

Try the Vol + Recovery mode. The timing is a bit tricky.
On my phone, if I keep Vol+, Home and Power button held down, the phone goes into a reboot loop (it keeps showing the logo, blank, logo, blank). After the logo appears the 2nd time, wait 1 second then release the Power button. Then it goes into the Recovery mode.
If you can't get it to work, try it without the USB/power plugged in as well.
Tried settings/sd card and phone storage/unmount internal sd/format? Or u could do settings/security/factory reset
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
I can't really try that because, as I said, I can't get past any of the error messages that pop up on the phone.
Have had to bite the bullet and take it in to T-mo for a repair and hope they don't notice
Will find out in 28 days.
I had a similar problem with JPC. After a while both the internal and external sd cards crapped out. After pulling the external sd and many tries I was able to boot into recovery mode where it says something like E: cant mount etc.
After pulling the ext sd card I was able to get into download mode and downgrade to JM7 with odin. After formatting with odin. It took two tries.
I still don't have access or storage on both the int and ext sd. I have roughly 2gb storage on the internal non-sd memory of the phone (i am not sure what it is but its enough to run android and I can make calls).
I can't install apps use the camera or anything that uses either of the sd cards for storage.
I did try a new sd card that was installed on the phone when it was stock FW but it doesnt work either.
I have a thread posted about it.

am wondering, did your phone ever work with the three button mode to enter download/recovery ? or did you always flash using "adb reboot recovery" ?

it would be nice if there was a way.
I agree with Electroz.
there is a new software out by Samsung
new PC Studio, it comes with a feature to "Emergency Restore"
you can try that, and see if that does anything to the internal SD
links are on the SGS wiki, click my link

I'll give it a shot, downloading now.
I'm not sure where to send my phone in, I called samsung, they sent me to bell, but I bought my phone from best buy and I'm with fido...
It sees both drives, but that's about it, when I try to click on them it just says "insert the disk into drive ..."
There has to be a way to format the internal card with a third party application. I'm gonna keep looking.
Hi all,
I have a problem and can't seem to find a solution. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.
I was running my I9000M on UGJK3 and just today I installed Kies onto my pc. Also inserted a fresh formated mirco sd card into the phone. I began using Kies to transfer some movies. I tried to send over a .avi clip that was only 2 mbs but it would freeze the transfer when the bar was nearly done. I ended up closing the application via. ctrl/alt/delete. I tried it about 2 or 3 times and no luck so I was going to try it again some other time. Now normally I would close kies by hitting the home button on my phone or disconnecting first with Kies on pc but this time I accidentally pulled the USB out before any of it. My phone is pattern locked and when i was pulling out my USB my finger touched the screen and even though it was the incorrect pattern, it still let me in. Mind you it was still scanning media. I thought it was weird so I pressed the power to off screen and tried to input my pattern to see if it would let me in. This time no luck and after a numorous attempts, still no luck. It asked for my google account info. which i put in and it would only be stuck on "checking" and the screen would fade and return to the pattern lock. With no luck, i tried turning the phone off and removing my ext. sd card, battery pull and rebooting. Now the screen will just go black after the fancy S symbol galaxy S intro screen. the back button and menu button light up but doesn't boot into home screen.
My 3 button still works and i tried to wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache...no luck. I used odin and booted up download mode and flashed JK3 in again and wiped data, wiped cache before even rebooting. Still nothing after the S screen. I noticed that in recovery screen, the bottom has yellow and red text saying
update media, please wait
E:Can't mount / dev/block/mmcblk0p1
(I/0 error)
E:copy_dbdata_media:Can't mount SDCARD:
your storage not prepared yet. please use UI menu for format and reboot actions.
copy default media content failed.
Does anyone know what may be wrong with my phone? Please help...
Thanks

you haven't told everybody the whole truth. if i understand what you say,you installed samsung kies today for the first time.
but how did you get jk3? odin right?
answer this survey as honestly as possible.

and here is the survey so far, notice how odin seems to screw up most i9000m sd cards? coincidence?

Captivate... Rooted, ROM'd, Kernel'd, etc. I would consider myself a medium skilled user, decent in adb/sdk, and have flashed numerous ROMs, kernels, etc.
So, here is the problem...
Customized a ROM, and a theme, plug phone in, move files, unplug, ready to install from .zip in recovery, open "choose from sdcard", nothing there. Reboot, ATT screen opens, boot screen flashes completely, once, and vibrates. A second time, vibrates twice. Finally a third time, vibrates three times, then shows screen as it is off, and charging (battery icon).
Any ideas? Phone will not register in Odin, nor can I flash from Update.zip.
Any help is appreciated, possible bounty. Thanks in advance!
Make a jig and get back to download mode
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I can get into download mode through recovery, but it's not readable via Odin, and I have full access to recovery, just no data at all... That's why I'm so confused, it goes through the boot screen, but just doesn't load anything. Thanks.
try toggling r/w r/o in Root Explorer. or boot into clockwork recovery with speedmod options and unmount / mount your internal sd card.
sounds like it isnt remounting. also when it boots into your launcher do you se "mounting card" "preparing card" "media scanning""media scanning complete" ect? twice? once for internal and once for external?
did you enable lagfix options? did you set them right? did you re-root after?
So which recovery are you able to boot into? Is it clockwork? If so, can you send adb commands? If you have adb connectivity then I would format the sdcard and push a cwm flashable ROM to /sdcard and install.
If the above is no good then I suppose you'll need to use download mode. Remove the battery and sim for a few minutes, try different USB ports, run odin as administrator or try a different PC.
Hi guys,
So I've already posted a few times.
I have the new Butterfly S. I tried to root it, but I installed the wrong recovery, which was clockwork. As you know, with this recovery, you can't mount SD card.
So I wiped it, remounted it, and then when the phone booted again, the only thing I saw was a black screen with the internet logos on the top right of the screen. The rest is totally unresponsive. I can only access my bootloader and my recovery.
I installed now TWRP, and it recognizes the sdcard and the device.
I tried to install the stock ROM posted on this forum but no change. No result. Black screen.
I have a backup in .ab format, I have Droid explorer and all. When I try to restore using ADB it asks me to unlock my phone (type the password). Unfortunately, my phone doesn't prompt anything anymore. I am not asked for a password, and therefore I am stuck.
Any idea how I could do it differently?
Thanks a lot, I am desperate.
ok i'm making progress
i can now access the android from the NOS Rom.
I then try to restore the data but then I can't type the password as i don't have any keyboard appearing...
besides, no internet, no sim card detected... any idea?
Hi all,
been a while since upgrading and always seemed to get help, so now im stuck i thought id bob back and ask again.
my friends father passed away recently, leaving his mobile locked with all family photos stored on the device, the device has no sim card as this has been cancelled and no memory card, the photos are on the actual phone.
the phone works but when powered on it prompts for the pin code. i dont want to try too many attempts and lock the phone. ive tried download mode, then connecting to PC, i can see the memory card but says please insert when i click it.
on my older phone i had CWM recovery installed and could mount the the storage card, will this work for the internal storage too ??
i dont need the phone, i just cant risk loosing precious photos...is installing CWM an option or is there another way of accessing the memory card while still locked.
the only information i have is that is a Galaxy s I9000, i have no idea which version of andriod is running
thanks for reading and hopefully someone can help
cheers craig

Thanks pryerlee
ive been reading and trying to get the adb method 2 to work but i either get unable to CD system or device offline when i type adb devices ive used linux mint 15
ive also tried window 7 but cannot connect or get same. i read further down and one member stated the USB debugging has to be ticked. i obviously cannot do this.
the only way i can get a connection is through the android recovery by hol vol up, menu and power it on. i can list files but i cant access the system directory or the sdcard.
i would like to be able to install CWM then i can try method one to unlock the phone or just mount the storage and hopefully recover the photos that way.
any advice on which update.zip i need to install CWM
thanks in advance...
you could try aroma file manager as it works from recovery, just download the file to the sdcard then install it from recovery that way you can get into system files, but saying that if you can't access the sdcard from recovery then I can't see it working, but no harm in trying. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646108
