I am running HD Revolution 71.1 on my M7 and can send text messages but if I attach a photo (selfie in this case) I get an error 'Unable to send message after multiple attempts'. This is the first time I have actually tried to use the phone for this function.
I am on Three in the UK and checked the APN MMS settings and they all seem correct. I can send text messages just not attached photos.

are you using any ads blocking software i.e. Adblock plus? These apps are known to also block MMS messages.

I am using AdFree. I tried disabling it, clearing the data and rebooting but still no go (unless it left something in the hosts file?).

Could try a dirty flash after the disable just to verify. All else fails, run a logcat while sending one and see what it throws out there.

I just spoke to Three. It's because I have a cap on my usage and picture messaging is charged at 35p each.I guess I will just have to find other methods to send the image.

You can use Wifi to activate voicemail. I have the same app on my Evo.
Also, try updating your data profile. Go to Settings -> System Updates -> Update Profile. See if that fixes it for you afterwards.

If you really want visual voicemail and don't care if it's Sprint or not, download Google Voice and activate voicemail on it. You need a Google account (it's free). It's nice because you can manage your voicemail online. You can download it, archive it, forward it, etc. Works just as well, if not better. You can set different greetings for different people, etc. Give it a try.
i tried this too
http://www.evo4gforum.net/troubleshooting-htc-evo-4g/visual-voicemail-isnt-working/
that wont work. just tells me that there are messages waiting to be delivered when i compose and attempt to send them.
I had a similar problem... what seemed to work to me was to press menu in VVM and compose a message to [email protected]. Make sure you have either wifi or 3g enabled and make the message over 25 seconds. Idk why your original activation message is not sending but this may help fix your problem.
edit... i just saw that you already tried this so the only other thing i can think of is to try to take it to a sprint store

it needs to be over 25 seconds?? i tried that method but not that duration...it just seems to me that the vvm app is not sending the activation messages...any messages.

ive got it rooted and junk, i really dont want to reset this thing to deal with those...'people that dont know', for lack of a better term.
there has to be a way to fix this. i just tried sending a longer message to [email protected] tells me there are two messages awaiting delivery.
Don't know if you are aware, but Sprint recently updated the VVM software to version T.5.1.0.48 (here in TX it was updated the last week of October). Note that Sprint CSR will not be able to help you reset it unless you are on a Sense ROM. Period.
Two options to fix on your non-Sense ROM... there is an updated .apk floating around on these boards (might need to PM someone for it). Get it and install via your file manager.
Or...
Other way is to nandroid your current ROM, then flash a Sense ROM like Fresh's most current. Then, update your PRL and Profile, then go into the VVM and press Menu and update Sprint VVM.
Then, either try to nandroid back to your original ROM and check to see if that does it (haven't tried that, but it might work)... or else... yes, you will need to pull the updated com.coremobility.app.vnotes from the Sense ROM and install the pulled .apk into your new ROM.
Hope this helps.
I have an idea. Try calling 408-970-0000 from your cell phone. It may ask you if you would like to receive sms voice messages. when i call from my phone it says "our records indicate that you are calling from an sms voice messaging enabled phone. if you would like to stop receiving messages press 2" If you changed from a phone that did not support this feature it may ask if you would like to receive messages instead. I am not sure if this will work but it is worth a try
none of this is working. in fact, I called that number and seemingly disabled the feature and there is no option to reenable.
well i did the same and i accidentally disabled but then re-enabled by sending another activation message to the visual voice-mail activation address. if that still does not work p.m me and i will send you the most recent version of VVM and you can flash it to your phone. if that still does not work you may just have to use Google Voice. it is free and i have used it before when i could not get sprint vvm installed and it works great.

ill take the latest version that you have...im willing to try anything. this is a new device and it wouldnt configure even on day one, before I rooted and rom'd it.
Well, i got it.
I thought, 'there has to be a reason Im not receiving these messages.'
I had 9016 included in the 'blocked texts' list. at sprint.com in my account. So my vvm wouldnt send me messages(i had a dozen sitting in there when i called) and I was unable to compose and send.
I removed 9016 from the blocked text list and tested. It worked. Then I added 9016 to the list, and it DID NOT work.
Days of frustration, something so simple.
Thank you, everyone, for your patience and assistance.
Fix
I deleted all the Sprint VM apk's and flashed the attached zip. No more stupid update notification!
EDIT - Opps, posted in wrong thread, but if you have that annoying Mandatory Update Notification, this should clear it.

Could anyone tell me what the visual voice mail activation address is? I've made this same mistake and can't seem to figure out how to re-enable the 9016 text messages and thus re-enable my visual voice mail. Thanks!

I have a Messaging problem and I am not sure if it just some setting I don't have correct or ROM Problem here goes. I am using Handcent App(I haven't tried the Messaging App that comes with Android) and I am on a Custom GB ROM .I can Send and Receive Text Messages and I can Send Messages with Pictures attached but if someone sends me a Picture via a message I don't get Message or Picture. Where should I start looking to Correct?
Thanks
start by making sure data connection is active,
then try downloading them again.
if not try deleting all the failed picutres.
Then open settings > manage apps > handcent > clear CACHE. REBOOT.
have a friend send a new pic,

I got it fixed. I had turned off the Build in Android Messaging App thinking I didn't need it since I had Handcent App running but it seems I do to Receive Text with Pictures.
Hey guys I just got an HTC Vivid a few days ago and I love the phone, the screen is such an upgrade from my iPhone 4(in usability).
I do have an issue where I cannot receive any MMS messages at all. I can send them just fine and I can sent receive regular texts, but picture messages just come up with a download button but once pressed it will say downloading and switch back to saying download.
I already called AT&T about it and they where unable to do anything about it. Any ideas? If I do not get this figured out by Monday, I will likely try to exchange my phone...
Make sure you have a LTE data plan provisioned and you have selected the default apn. Also you may want to go into a corp store and get a new sim.

i had this problem about 1.5 weeks ago and it was a network issue... it was resolved within a day or 2... what usually worked for me was to reboot the phone, after ATT fixed the problem then all was good.
It was indeed an issue with the default APN settings. After setting the APN to what is described in the link below my MMS works 100% perfectly! Thanks for the help.

I don't have Vivid in front of me ATM but maybe you can try and create a new APN instead of modifying the existing one.
Yes you can press the options button and create a new APN.
Sorry for the bump of a thread. This is what I get. "One or more of the message components have been deleted by MMS Adaptation. Either the message was too large or the components were unsuitable for your terminal".
Sender was using an iphone 4. I can receive other pictures from my friends 4s.
Would updating the AP fix this and would doing so effect anything with the network?
Sorry I am a noob.

I've had this same issue when I was sending a picture to a friend with an iPhone 4. That's the message they received when trying to open the MMS.
On T-Mobile... When someone receives my picture message, they receive a message instead of picture that says that the media is too large, etc. All of my other phones automatically downsize the picture to mms size. Does the Moto X not do this? Thanks.
There has been a previous documentation of this error where the hangouts or default messaging app won't resize if you don't use the attachment button in the message composition window

I think you are having the same problem as described in this thread.
So what's the work around? Always send by using the attachment button in the messaging app? Using the share via mms button in the gallery doesn't work?
Thanks for the info. Weird... Is this an android or motorola issue.?
The error occurred again and I tried sending directly from the gallery and by pressing the attachment button in the messaging app. Both failed and the receiver got the error message.
Any other ideas on what to try?

If you're using the default messaging app, try hangouts. I did and it worked but I didn't really like the app so I'm using 8sms instead.

Nope. The problem still happens even after updating to 4.4.2.
@_Arjen_ Not sure if this is right way to go about this but can you combine these this thread and the one below? they both address the same issue about MMS not compressing properly. I just wanna help clean all the duplicate threads going around here!

EDIT***
I found 1 more threads with the same compression issue using the stock app.

Hey guys i need some help. I've got a bootloader unlocked(30.B7) rooted, stock 4.4.4 Moto X and I'm having the hardest time trying to figure out why I cant send text messages but im somehow able to receive them. I can get sms and mms but cannot send. I've tried using different text message apps and none can send. I've tried factory resetting and that didn't help either. Anyone have a clue?

It's possible your message center (SMSC) number setting has been changed or reset somehow (maybe if you recently swapped sim cards or something). Try resetting it by following the guide in the link below (disregard the CyanogenMod branding, it's the same for stock ROM).
if you can't use *#*#4636#*#* then either make an activity shortcut to Phone Info or use one of the dedicated apps in the play store, like Radio Switcher (the apps don't do anything but open Phone Info menu).
link: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/SMSC_Updates
OK so i gave this a try and had no luck with the getting my carriers SMSC. I also found on one site that deleting my stock sms app may be the problem? sounds kinda lame since I've done that on other rooms but on other phones. Could that be it?
Yes, if you re-install the stock messaging app it will work.
I've tried different 'stock' sms apps form the play store with no luck still.
By 'stock' sms app I mean the system app 'Messenger" that came with the phone that you uninstalled. You will have to search around to find it since it is not in Play. Next time just disable a system app, do not uninstall it. That way if it breaks something you can re-enable it.
OK so I found the stock sms app and installed it, still a no go. I even tried converting it to a system app using Titanium backup. I've found that in that app and also Hangouts when I enter a thread the app FC's. I don't know what else it could be
Sent from my XT1056 using XDA Free mobile app
Did you set the stock SMS app to the correct permissions? Probably time to flash the system.
