[Q] Worth Buying/How Long has your HD+ Lasted? - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm looking into purchasing a Nook HD+ tablet. I've played with it in store and it seems like a great buy, especially for the price. I'm a college student and would be using it mostly to view textbooks, take notes, and light game/movie usage. I'm looking for an under $200 tablet and I think the size is perfect (I'm not a fan of 7" tablets). Overall it seems almost too good to be true.
The reviews are mostly positive from what I've seen, but I'm really curious on the longevity of the tablet.
How long have you had yours, how do you feel about it/was it worth buying, and how well is it running after how long you've had it?
Thanks!

Longevity seems pretty good my wife's is a year old no issues still working great. My first one lasted about 7 months and then it lost a fight with a flight of concrete and steel stairs, any tablet would have failed believe me it was almost 20 feet of bouncing. My second one is a refurbished unit I have had it for about 6 months no idea how old it really is and it is working great still.
As far as light gaming and movie viewing it is awesome. I have the hdmi plug and use it to stream movies all the time. I read on it all the time I can't imaging you having an issue with text books as I read books, magazines, and comics all the time with no issues. There are faster devices out there but not at the same price.

Thanks for the prompt and helpful response! Have you noticed any sort of "lagginess" when you don't completely end a program (pull up the active program bar and swipe them away)? I was playing with one at Target and it was very laggy, but when I cleared out the dozens of apps that were currently open, it seemed to run more smoothly. Granted this thing has probably been abused for however long it's been on the display case and by many people, but I was just curious if you've had any sort of problem like this.

If you expect the same performance as an iPad you will be disappointed. It is about 90% in speed and polish for less than a third the price. I don't have much lag but I keep all my stuff (movies, books, music...) on the external card and I think this eliminates 90% of the lag others see.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using XDA Free mobile app

Lag is normal for this tablet due to chipset. If you're willing to root, lagfix application fixes the issue by using trim. I run the latest cyanogenmod on my tablet and I love it. I read comics on it daily! Rooting, changing from stock rom to cyanogenmod 4.4 and lagfix, if you have the appropriate chipset makes this tablet a lovable beast of a beauty. I use it for word processing with a Bluetooth keyboard as well. Had it for 9 months and I love it. Would only stop using it for a nexus 10 level screen with an intense graphic processor and expandable storage. But honestly not looking to spend $600 for a tablet, so this is my go to device. I have a nexus 7 2012 that I honestly use solely to read novels and play a few Tegra processor based games. I like the 7 inch for reading novels, but use my Nook hd+ for everything else!

Have had mine for about a year. I rooted and flashed a custom ROM immediately. It is an OK tablet for average use with some lag. A good deal at the price but far from being a top product on the market

Thank you for all of your responses! To go along with my original question, how is the responsiveness to using a stylus for notes? Someone was telling me they didn't care for the ability to write on it, but they didn't provide much more detail than that. What are your thoughts? Especially with google play compatability, I'd think there are some good note taking apps (recommendations possibly?). I'd mostly be taking notes on top of PDF versions of slides my professors put out. Thanks again!

Using a stylus is not great at least the one I tried. My Note 2 is much better but then again that was built to use a stylus. Typing is very doable on it I do that in meetings all the time.

I will echo what the previous post said. Not that great with a stylus but as far as bang for your buck goes you can't beat this thing.

Does that depend on the app as well or just not good in general? Even with a pointier stylus than one of those wider ballpoints?

I only tried the one it is one of those freebies Amazon gives out with other things. I actually got it free with a case for a tablet I gave to my daughter. Works ok for general navigation. My mother in law uses the same type for everything on her nook she doesn't like using her finger but she doesn't do any type of note taking just reading and light game playing.

I have a Nook HD+ running CM11 and an LG G Pad 8.3 GPE. The former has an 8.9" screen but is sluggish even with trim, and the latter has an 8.3" screen and is silky smooth. As of last week the G Pad GPE is $225, so it's only a bit more than the HD+ (assuming it's still $180). I use the HD+ to read comics and the G Pad for everything else. My $0.02 on the HD+ and something similar.

Did you get the G Pad on sale? I'm seeing it from $279 online (best buy). I'm nearly positive I'm going to go with the HD+ though. I've been doing app research and I think I've found apps that'll fit my need on it and I don't need it to be super powered.
I did hear from a different forum somebody talking about being able to buy it, play with it during the return period, and then returning it if i don't like it. Is this true? Where would allow that? I would have thought that once it's opened, it can't be returned.

Barnes and Noble and Amazon both have really good return policies. Just double check when you buy it.

I've had mine for a year now and I'm fairly happy with it. Like some, I rooted and put CM on immediately. Performance is okay, if laggy at times, but the 1920x1280 screen is great.

Thank you for all of the help you've provided. I appreciate it greatly. I was talking with a colleague of mine about this and he brought up a good point about B&N getting out of the tablet game. Will there still be support/will I notice they even got out of the game? He was saying to watch out for it to soon become obsolete and be careful of hopping on the train right before the final stop.
What are your (and everybody's) thoughts on that?
Thank you again!

Pretty sure you're going to install CM on it soon as you get it, so no I don't believe you'll even notice the B&N are out of the game, as you put it
As the others say, there is a teeny bit of lag but the screen/battery life/sheer functionality you get more than make up for it.
One thing I sometimes wish for is GPS, but for the price really you're getting so much more than you're paying for.

They will continue to provide support through the warranty period and after that well you still have the forums here. The product works well enough as is and they haven't stopped selling content so it should be good for a while.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using XDA Free mobile app

I bought 3 HD+ a year ago and all are still good running cm11. One is used as a DVR recording 2 cameras on motion to emmc. It's still alive but might break sooner (hope it doesn't).
The touchscreen is not that good, maybe because I use a screen protection.
Sometimes, alternating between apps (chrome, office) may be a bit slower. I used to use Swiftkey as custom keyboard, but aosps one is much lighter.

I've had my HD+ for a year and a half. Still loving it. Right now I'm running PAC-ROM on it and not having any real issues. I only update the ROM every month or so. But it's great for videos, surfing and reading. Still have no complaints about it and as long as trim keeps running, it doesn't lag too much.

[Q] Any 7" color ebook screen better than NC

I'm looking for a good screen 7" color ebook. After searching in the market, it seems that NC is the best at the moment, IPS, 1024x600...
I wonder if I missed anything else in the market?
For the cost and amount of things you can do with the nook, I would say it is most definitely the best buy.

I was considering getting the Samsung Galaxy Tab, mainly for the processor speed, looking for faster web page loading. Any thoughts from other NC owners appreciated.

If you want to pay twice as much then go for Galaxy tab. But I do not see any point to go for that just for processor speed. NC can go very well upto 1.1GHz.
Worth it.
I looked around and read a lot of reviews and for the price, you are not going to find something with the dev support and capability of the Nook color. The closest I found in the price range was the PocketBook IQ, which didn't have the dev support and was running less ram, plus could only handle smaller SD cards (8gb max IIRC)
I picked my NC up when B&N was having their $50 off coupon a couple of weeks ago. Rooted it right out of the box (after registering of course) and after a few days I flashed to Froyo custom and I honestly couldn't be happier (well maybe if OCing didn't make it so unstable). Rooting and Froyo install were both as easy as burning a microSD and rebooting. The devs here have done a great job making the process painless.
It is fast, responsive, and capable. It does just about everything I ask of it (except watch Hulu... stupid Hulu. I'd even settle for Netflix... stupid Netflix). And now that it looks like BT may have been unlocked, I will be able to get it to talk to hopefully a headset, GPS, Keyboard and tethered phone, and it will become the device I use most. And if they can unlock the USB, then it would be way too cool. The battery lasts me the whole day with light to medium use, and the screen is gorgeous. I don't care about not having a camera.
Bad side? Overclocking makes it unstable as hell (but I don't feel it needs it most of the time IMHO). It has trouble with my work's encrypted network (but then again, so do macs), and flash video can be quite choppy (games run fine). The controls with softkeys can take some getting used to, and I needed a bigger keyboard for my fat fingers (I thoroughly recommend the full version of 'Keyboard from Android 2.3' for $.99 from the market), and the screen can seem a bit unresponsive at times (a screen off and back on usually makes it better, but I wish I could adjust it). It also takes forever to charge off a normal miniUSB, so I will be buying a second cable as soon as I find one for a reasonable price. And the market took a little bit of trickiness to get working properly, but it was a 5 minute process, counting the time to find the solution here.
My advice: If you want a tablet and don't mind doing a bit of tinkering, buy one. It is small, portable and flexible, and you will not beat it for the price.
Edit: After updating my Kernel with Dalgrin's latest, overclocking is beautifully stable

Well my NC doesn't load pages as fast as my Atrix but considering the price point I don't expect it to. To be fair the Galaxy Tab and the NC aren't even in the same league/price point, in a head to head the Tab is obviously better but it's also like $600 with no contract vs $250. I personally don't feel I'd get my $600 out of the tab and I use my NC everyday, and the xoom is nuts on pricing ATM IMO. I feel that for $250 the NC is a steal for it's performance, it isn't the fastest tablet or have the best screen but it isn't like I'm slamming my head on the table waiting for web pages to load either.
+1

Thank you, ErroneousBosch, for yr detail comments.
In summary, NC got the best deal at the moment. NC also got the best screen too.
Decision pretty made!
However, it seems I just missed the $50 promotion
When you turn brightness all the way up to 100%, I swear, I think I have a Super AMOLED screen.
The Tab is obviously nicer, and having the actual hard key "back" and "menu" button rather than remapping the volume buttons or softkeys-type options, I beleive, can't be underestimated.
Otherwise for the price point? You can NOT go wrong with $250 or less. That is, if you are not afraid to tweak, root or ROM. If you want a great experience out of the box, the Tab and its huge price tag is the option for you. But if you have a little patience, CM7 and Honeycomb will both be wonderful on the Nook Color over the next few months.
I don't know how much you will use yours but I find that my NC is by no means a "need" like a smartphone. So I would never pay for a Tab or even a Xoom (and for sure) not an iPad.
Try the nook with cm7.... maybe it was the tab that I used, but the nook blew it out of the water in every way. Also, with CM7 and the stand by cell network disabled, I get a full 8 to 10 hrs of almost nonstop use... and more than a day of moderate use.

definitely the best one right now, until the android tablet market explodes.
(everyone has to always catch up to apple)
I was looking, but for the price you can't beat the NC. No doubt subsidized somewhat in expectation of book purchases (heh)
I enjoy mine a lot.
It's like any other cell phone/Tablet except without phone and camera (of which i have a separate devices that function better than an all in one for what i need)
the only other one i considered was the HTC flyer. not out yet and it's geared towards cell companies, IE ~600$ and up
Anyone else notice this trend of either catering to the BOOK or CELL DATA crowd?? bleh.
This video will give you the answer you are looking for...NC any day!

If you look at the thread for that, you'll see that controlled testing found no diference in battery life from disabling the phone apks, as those services never actually run due to the absence of the phone hardware.
While anecdotal reports continue to say this is the way to achieve battery nirvana, third-party testing never reports a measurable diference.
For me, I get the same life he's claiming the hack gives and I don't use it (I have tested it previously).
Disabling those apks has also been demonstrated to cause issues with the Market.

I don't quite agree with this. The current galaxy tab does not impress me in any way. The only true advantage it gas over the nc in any way is its additional hardware thats found in 99 percent of phonesthat no one truly needs on a tablet. (eg gps and camera.)
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Also, I never noticed any stability issues due to overclocking. My 1,1ghz NC is smooth and stable.
Oh and after seeing the video, I find the GT to be rather ugly. It always looked great on pictures, but compared with the nook, it's an ugly brick.
On the other hand, I'm a fan of the big bezel of the NC as it's very easy to hold with one hand. YMMV
I played with the Galaxy Tab at Best Buy on Monday and felt the same sentiments. It's smaller than the NC & cheaper feeling. For a faster processor, it was quite laggy. I wasn't impressed at all, especially with the high price tag!!!

Should I Get A Nook Color?

Hey guys,
I have a Droid Incredible (been rooted since root was available!) and love it. Anyway, my question is should I get one of these Nook Colors? They seem too good to be true, the price is cheap and it seems like a great tablet when paired with CM7 or other custom roms.
But I guess what I'm here to ask is, how do you guys use your Nook Color? If I already have a rooted smartphone that is with me at all times, what are some of the benefits of the Nook? What DON'T you like about the Nook?
Thanks for your time
I am sure that answer will ultimately come from you. After all, 10 years ago nobody needed a smartphone either!
The beauty of the Nook is that it is cheap enough to get and then discover its place in your digital life.

Well, as a rooted incredible owner, i feel safe in chiming in.
Frankly, since getting my Nook, my incredible has seen almost 0 use, short of kicking on WiFi tether. The nook with CM7 is amazing, and does everything my Inc did, but better. Its more fun to game on, work on, and browse on, but still small enough to take with me everywhere. I love it.
What don't i like about it? Bluetooth range could be better, but thats about it...
When I'm not at work on a computer already, it's my go-to browser, email client, news reader, and e-reader.
I'm moderately jealous of the browsing experience on an iPad, and its silky smooth responsiveness.
I wish the Nook had 3G and a mic, but I'm certainly not complaining @ $249.
My introduction to Android was my Thunderbolt which of course I rooted and played with for awhile. Then the NC caught my eye since I've used a Sony reader for a few years and with a little net research I just had to have the NC.
Primary use = ebook reader
Bonus uses = games, internet and the ability to play with the Android OS with the comfort of knowing that no matter how bad I screw up the NC will boot from the SD card and can be fixed.
My NC normally runs the latest CM7 stable release but I can experiment with other roms whenever I feel like playing around and know that I can always reflash my last stable rom with all my settings and apps.
Btw is 225$ in ebay already.
The nook color is the first "tablet" I've owned. I've played with my friend's iPad enough to feel that a *minimum* $500 price tag was not worth it. Even compared to other tabs like the Xoom and Galaxy, I still feel $500 is not worth it.
The $250 price point is what did it for me. It's got great functionality and I've learned SO MUCH from this site and playing with it. my only gripe is it can get a little laggy. I haven't learned how to overclock it yet but that is probably the key to a more responsive experience.
definitely worth it.

I got my NC on craigslist for $100.00 from a kid that didn't read one book on it, brought it home, rooted it, put cm7 on it and couldn't be happier. I also have a first Gen ipad that I don't even look at anymore. I actually have the ipad on craigslist for a trade for a Xoom. IMO the NC is the best bang for your Buck. Now that i have one I'm not sure what i did without it!
Also using Incredible, I consider the NC one of my best purchases. So much can be done.
Still rocking the Incredible with the XDA Premium App.
I am not using stock firm, but always used CM7 ROMs. I loved when I used Froyo, but with Gingerbread update i hated it due to battery bug. It won't go to sleep and drain the battery in 2-3 days without any use. But since CM7 nightly 82 build, they fixed this bug, and I love my Nook Color with Gingerbread.. You will love this toy. Its great!!!

Might be your stylus. I have one I got from best buy, soft rubber tip - forget the manufacturer, but it's all black. I can go find out in a few days if you'd like.
Works great, haven't had an issue with it. I prefer to use my finger most often, but it comes in handy in some games.
In regards to the thread purpose, the Nook is definitely worth it if you are already here in this forum ... you have all the tools in front of you to unlock it's potential.
I don't have a smart phone, can't compare to that, but like others have mentioned before - perfect size of portability vs. usability. I still prefer a real sized monitor if possible, but more often then not there is no real pc around.
It's big enough to make browsing the web worthwhile, and not squinting into a tiny smart phone. I used to have an ipod touch, which is about that size, and it just wasn't a good web experience.
It rides along in one of the cargo pockets of my pants, can't tell you how often i've been glad to have it (even before I rooted it)
The price point makes it. At half the cost of a 'tablet' you get all the functionality, and darn close the power.
I don't think you'll regret picking one up if you do.

I just overclocked it yesterday to 1100m and its awesome!! I love it even more!!!

I just can't let the Nook Color go! [Well, not really :D]

I've been enjoying my NC since February. I use it mainly for e-books, e-mail, web surfing, casual gaming and occasional Netflix streaming. I love tinkering with it using different ROMs, etc.
About 2 weeks ago, I purchased a XOOM and have been enjoying it as well. Initially, I thought that I would just sell the NC since it would be redundant to have two Android tablets, but I just can't let it go. The experience of using both devices is very different. While XOOM is great for surfing the web (native resolution webpages without zoom in/out), typing long e-mails or watching a movie, NC is very portable and perfect for reading (can't hold the XOOM -or any other 10.1" tab for that matter- in one hand for an extended period of time).
I guess I'm going to keep both. I was wondering if any of you were/are in the same situation? Did you end up keeping the NC?
Thanks!

I'm not quite in this position just yet. But I know exactly how you feel. I really enjoy the Community that the Nook Color has, I love the size and portability that comes with this device.
But I want more. Really, I want to be able to have a tablet media center on the go, and the Nook is really lacking without hdmi out.
So I find myself really pondering what to jump for next... And unfortunately few things are making me want to. Doesn't help that I promised the wife this Nook Color in fall for her classes... Hope Amazon hurries up with their Nook Killer a.k.a Coyote.
I'd like to pick up a 10" tab running android.
I can't see ever getting rid of the Nook Color, even when that happens. I'll own this device until the end of it's life.
I like the form factor, and the nature of it as an e-book reader means it will always have use for me.
I can't see being the avid reader I am on a 10" tab.
I've been looking at tablets with my lady, and she still wants a Nook Color. It's the size that does it for her, and the quality of the device.
The Nook Color hits a quality level in it's offering that hasn't been seen in quite some time on the regular retail market.

About 2 weeks ago, I purchased a XOOM and have been enjoying it as well.
I guess I'm going to keep both.

This is going to sound weird after stating this thread, but I sold the Nook Color today
Someone made an offer that I couldn't resist (came ahead at the end), and after seeing the upcoming 7" tablets, as well as the 8.9" Sammy and anticipated Amazon tablet, I decided to let the little guy go before its value stats to decrease due to competition.
I'll be definitely picking up a 7" tablet to accompany my XOOM in the future, but I don't know which one yet.
I guess this should be my good by post to the Nook community. It's been fun!

Does the Acer bring with it the end of the NC as a tablet?
I looked up what specs I could find and the features do look impressive, except for the battery. It appears this is the tradeoff that was made to cut down on weight so "it would be suitable for female users". 1530mah that will last up to 5 hours? That sounds a bit optomistic to me. To put it in perspective the NC has a 4000mah battery that is supposed to last up to 8 hours.
No tablet currently available can beat the nooks beautiful screen. You can all the specs in the world but if your screen sucks there really isn't any point to it.

Isn't it just an IPS screen with 1024 x 600 resolution? None of the tablets (not just 7" competitors)? Really?
There are many tablets in the market with similar -or better- screen compared to NC. Besides, my XOOM doesn't have an IPS screen and I'm perfectly happy with it.
When you look at the overall specs of the nook as compared to the other 7" tabs on the market, the nook just comes out on top. This takes into account the price and the screen. One of the most comfortable things about the nook IMO is the design which boots first from the sd card. It is almost impossible to brick this thing. The only feature the other tablets have that I would want is a functional webcam. With CM7 and host mode enabled, I have all the features the other tablets have except webcam. At present, HC, as an OS, leaves a lot to be desired, the other tabs have poor to average battery life and there are few tablet optimized apps. Yes, HC can run all the apps out there but the overall results are somewhat less than optimal. For my money, I'll wait till q4 when we should have ICS and the quadcore chips out there. Not trying to flame any other tablets but I have tried out most of the 10" tabs extensively and have not found one I would jump on right now. Just saying.....

I may be looking into selling my nook here. The new 7" Acer Iconia seems like a great deal @ ~$300, with all the dual core goodness and nook size, but I shall be waiting for reviews before making up my mind.

As already mentioned in this thread, the main category that NC lags behind is anything multimedia related. The speaker, headphone jack, lack of microphone, etc etc. Of course, these are not expected on a NC, because it was designed as an eReader. However, since you are putting it above other tablets -even the 10.1" ones- then the comparison will be valid (again, normally I wouldn't even compare it).

Actually, one of the reasons that I decided to sell the NC now was because it is pretty much alone in its segment (i.e., 7" tablet) and the price is its biggest strength. However, any 7" tablet that is around $300 may make it harder to sell the NC in the future.
As I mentioned, I am still in the market for a 7" tablet. I just need Staples to start carrying 7" models, so that I can get it for next to nothing

So, you're saying size really DOES matter... lol... just had to!
My situations with the Nook is this. I didnt need a tablet. Couldn't even try to make up an excuse as to why I needed to buy one. All I knew is after reading these threads is that I just wanted one. Now I couldn't live without it. Its totally replaced my laptop and put a serious dent in my main desktops use too. I will buy another tablet once one is released that's worthy but the Nook has earned its right to stay indefinitely.
I bought the Nook Color because it was cheap and hackable and I figured it'd keep me busy and avoid ay temptation to buy something fancy/expensive because there will be lots of movement in the field this year. But once CM7 came out for it I've just been a really happy camper. I think what it's going to take to get me to move is a 4x3 aspect IPS screen maybe running ice cream sandwich, and a "family" data plan so I don't have to think about tethering or wifi access. The 16x9 screen just doesn't fit web pages or book reading nicely when in portrait orientation which I seem to favor. Yeah I just described an iPad, but I'm not going there.

Goodbye Nooky, Hello Nexus 7

Wow this has been a great run with everyone in the nook community.
I have been with xda for sometime and seen a few theads and devices in my days. Lol. Out of all of them though the nook has had the best community. Great devs and some great nabs as well. Going for the plunge and getting a 16gb N7. Seems like the best bang for the Buck and has some great hardware in it. (ASUS) not Samsung lol. Mirage for the nook really is the greatest rom so far for the nook. I am going to keep the nooky for the wife to use. Thanks again everyone.
I'm all thumb's
Hope you enjoy your N7. I'm loving mine, but you never really leave the Nook community. I'm sure you'll be browsing to see what is new.
I also made the move to a Nexus 7. The Nook will be hanging around a while for the kids and as a play/dev device for myself. I will miss the Nook community as well. I plan to leave the N7 stock for as long as I can manage it.
I'm posting this from my N7, but I just can't bring myself to part with my NC. It's been my constant companion for almost 2 years. I even purchased a murse (man purse) to carry it.
It has been ballgames, several graduations, jury duty and even to church!!!

And does anyone here have one of the cases that has a Keyboard? Wondering cause I would like to know how it handles with typing. I do about 65- 90 wpm depending if I am checking spelling. Lol

That would still be great for school. If I am spending more time then 8 hours at school, better be getting my phd. Lol
I love the hdmi out part too. Hook it up to my tv with my drive of movies through the usb port on the dock and I am totally set. I was thinking of getting a mini pc for that but this kills 2 birds with 1 stone.

Got the N7 recently, but frankly I'm still using my NC. It has proven itself to be quite rugged whereas the N7 is a bit on the flimsy side. As proof - my 6-year-old has been using a NC for the past 6 months, and it's still good as new after rough treatment. Plus I love how I can just swap the SD out and I have a whole different device. I have 4 or 5 "personalities" on as many cards. That's somehing the N7 cannot do.
I keep waiting for the Memo370T, but I guess it will never show.
Anyway, I might getting the N7 soon.

I have had my N7 for about a month and it is still stock. New record for me! I did unlock it and root it right away. I guess that goes without saying. :silly:
I love my N7 but I wish I had not sold my NC a long time ago. The NC was so great that I thought a bigger tablet would be good so I got an Acer A500 which I didn't like so I bought a Nook Tablet which was also a bad idea. I think I am back on track with the N7, even if it is boring because it just works properly and I can't get inspired to put a ROM on it. I have been thinking about picking up a NC for cheap just to mess with and let the kids use for Netflix.
I'm going for the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 Student Edition Bundle. Better build quality and features and includes a keyboard and dock for $249. Oh yeah, 2 cameras and a micro-sd slot. Yummmmmm

I actually did hold off myself. I was going to get a tf300 or a 700 but the build quality was really bad. The wifey went and opened a closed one and the plastic on the keyboard popped apart from itself. The 700 screen was kind messed up. Glass wasn't flush on either of them. Then was reading a bunch of horror stories on the n7. I am going to put things on hold. Was able to pick a i3 Sony vaio for school for only $150 and got a wicked steamer. New Samsung blu-ray player that will steam videos from my server and it plays all my digital movies and seems every type so far from avi, mkv, mov, wmv. Plus I can use my nook as the remote.
I still want a quad core tablet though. They are super smooth. Just want one that is going to have a great material build quality.

Wouldn't be surprised if the Tablet #3 with its rumored "revolutionary display" is 1280x800 quad core ... I don't think they'd stick with a dual core if they up the display resolution, since that would make the T#3 perform slower than the current generation. And that would differentiate it with the existing NT8G and NT16G, after they phase out the Nook Color and the current generation of Nook Tablets take up the $150-$170 price point underneath the new device.
OTOH, depending on what is different about the "revolutionary new display", it might be 1024x600 to keep the cost down while the new technology ramps up production.

Touchpad still a good buy?

I'm looking for an on-the-cheap 9.7 - 10.1 tablet. I was looking at a variety of options, like the Le Pan II, but I've seen a couple Touchpad's floating around $100-$150, so this is certainly a viable option.
But do you guys think this is still a good buy?

I use phonearena.com to compare specs when I'm shopping for stuff like this... it isn't the end all be all, but it gives you a general idea.
I personally think a Touchpad for 100ish is still a great bargain.
It really depends on your use case. The TP is great, and for someone who is used to Android it's wonderful. A week ago I would have recommended it without hesitation. But I helped a friend who is MUCH more tech-savvy than myself install Android on a TP yesterday. I realized that just maintaining the thing is significantly more complicated than I, someone who has gotten used to TP Android's little quirks like it's second nature, realize.
TLDR; if you like tweaking and such, the TP is great; if you want it to just work, get something meant for Android.
Orphaned TP's a good deal?

What other year and a half old 10 inch tablet is still selling for its original, (discounted), price? What other ... is still being updated to the latest and greatest Android? There must be something to these orphaned tablets besides a perverse sense of humour in the geek community. PS - my family has three. I would recomend the 32GB models and check for no cracks in the plastic around the speakers. Craigs List is your friend.
At $100 even at $150 its a great buy. Given the ugly 100 tablets that off brand companies are releasing. I think hardware wise the touch pad is better than the Kindle fire. Some one correct me on that if I'm wrong.
Posted from my Verizon Employee Edition DROID DNA #01749.
Bought mine for $150 with 2 cases, charger, fancy wireless charger and sweet Pelican case for $150 and I am happy. Would I be more happy with a rear 5-8 megapixel camera, SIM card slot and GPS? Sure. But my phone works just as well for that.
I spent $75 for mine(because of a bad charger), picked up the charger, case and TouchStone for a extra $50, and have JB running. It runs fantastic! Only issues I don't care for, No ext SD, GPS and the DPI for the TP is a bit low, so the display is not as good as some of the newer devices. But for the money, you cant get better(IMO)
I have one with the latest CM9 release directly from CM. It runs perfectly. Video is blazing fast and looks great (e.g. Youtube app). The low priced tablets out there are garbage. This is fast, runs CM perfectly, and is a bargain. I think the screen looks better than my Nexus 7.
I've got two, a 16GB with Jellybean I've been using for over a year and a new 32GB still with plastic one, good little tablets.
Yes! I'm so tempted to purchase another from Craigslist. Its so cheap!

I was lucky to buy mine during the original $99 firesale. And I was pretty happy with it when it was webOS only (only gripe was the lack of apps) especially back when they offered free apps in their monthly newsletter emailed out. And I have been even happier with it having gone through the transition through different Android ROMs (initially the CM9 nightlies, then RandonROM Falcon 1.2, then SGA's Fat 'n Creamy CM9 and now OaT's Light 'n Tasty Jelly Bean) that have been stable, fast, and added the extensive Android app market. Dual-booting between webOS and Android added unique capabilities that even iPad users didn't ave, and finally with the latest CM9 and new CM10 ROMs the working cameras completed the Android experience on TouchPads.
That all said... I don't know if I would always recommend going the TouchPad route to others. I'd only recommend it with a caveat... that you are somewhat comfortable working on computers and able to follow directions, at the risk of bricking your investment. I am not the most technically savvy person, but I am somewhat comfortable with computers and I do have the ability to follow directions and stay calm when something out of the ordinary happens. And... I am very comfortable asking questions and asking for help. I have rooted my cellphone as well (invoking a bit more risk... since if I brick the tablet I am out $100, the phone costs more to replace plus I lose cellphone access for a while). In fact, some times I actually enjoy the process (uh oh... am I becoming a "flashaholic?" ).
If you aren't (comfortable with computers, able to follow directions, willing to ask questions and get help)... I'd suggest spending a bit more (eg $200) and getting the Nexus7, or a sale on a current name brand Android tablet, or a IPad Mini. That way you get a currently supported product and still have all the positives without risk. My wife has an old Apple tablet and it simply works (and works simply). My daughters can help her if she needs to download an app, or figure out how to reset something. She doesn't have to search through different web sites, bulletin boards, and exchanges postings to get info, answers, or help. She doesn't have to reboot, reflash ROMs or Nandroids, or download app tools to resolve issues. Sure, there are things she can't do... but most of the time, she gives me a look and asks "Why would I want to do that anyway?".
Sorry if this was a babble... but I sometimes take the different view... hopefully it helps.
Just pickup a second one 32G Mint condition for my Mom $125 4 hours ago. It's still a great buy for a cheap tablet. I picked up from a daddy selling for his lil girl to exchange the Ipad Mini, there is no Android on it and like brand new, no cracked around speakers. Just put in CM9 Nightlife and running so smooth.
in my opinion, if you know how to update and maintain your Hp touchpad, it's a great bargain. Otherwise, you will be stuck at some points. I'm a read and follow person, I read and do carefully what the instructions tell me to do so all of my android devices are great , thanks to XDA
For $100-150,touchpad is the best choice for tablet.
But you really need to spend time on it. Search, post, download , flash...you have to send quite some time on it and may also encounter issues. But it is smooth , elegant, and full of support from best developers in the world!
Thanks to all developers , you make life with touchpad different!
