[Q] How to do a stock MJ5 upgrade to NC2 ? - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys
I have a SM-900A on MJ5, not rooted, on ultra mobile (t-mobile)
1. software update says there is no update available.
2. i tried 240258.zip (or something - renamed to update.zip) in sd card...Install from external storage...gives me some error about keys not matching, wipes /data and reboots
The guide to go up to 4.4.2 over here uses a UrDroid rooted 4.4.2 after safestrap. But that was back in Apr 2014 when towelroot was not available.
Where can i just download the correct update.zip and do a stock upgrade to 4.4.2? i do want to root after it but i am assuming towelroot should work without a hiccup. Am i missing something here?
Thanks

I JUST did this same dance. Don't follow any other instructions except for the "Ready to update to KK from JB" guide laid out here. You'll be incredibly pleased ha. So easy and hiccup free. Use Geohot's root toolbar to get you started! Good luck! PM me if you have problems

From what I've read, everyone who deviates from that guide has problems. You might Hey lucky and not, but I'd just go roti the easy method. Took me all of five minutes

What version of Kingo did you try? Use 1.1.5 or 1.1.8. People have had success with that. 1.1.8 worked for me. Just Google around and you will find the download on the net somewhere.

that sucks. factory reset? ill most likely still have the issue but maybe not. isnt there a way to completely wipe the phone from the boot screen? id rather not if i dont have to.
You can try a factory reset and then root. If not there is a thread in the general section to go back to stock. Works great. I used it.

You are but we can't figure out why you can't root when others in your situation can. There is Kingo thread you can check out. Maybe you can find some answers there.

Factory Reset after the update to NB4, also go to recovery wipe cache, then try the 1.18, during the rooting process, look your phone screen, you need to click accept something twice,
I don't know how it all works terribly well but you said you still have Safestrap? Can you still install ROMs and can they have root?
Also, for when you eventually do get it working again. I recommend freezing the ATT updater. It can be awful when it eventually FORCES an update.
I got a free app called App Quarantine and froze "AT&T Software Update".

You will just have to follow the restore to MJ5 thread. The instructions are simple and very easy to follow. Go slow and follow them to the T.
What they do not mention however is do not use a 3.0 USB port. Only 2.0 will work.
Just follow that.
It is literally impossible to brick this phone to the point of it being unrecoverable. There is a tutorial to restore from hard bricks without J-Tag.

Hey graydiggy, I did the restore back to MJ5, but can't seem to get the last step for rooting to work. I tried every way with putting the rdlv on internal...unzipped and zipped. I even tried doing the same on the external sd as well. When I reboot supersu doesn't do anything. Any suggestion on how to get the last step to work?
Thanks in advance for your help.

It has to be unzipped and on the internal. You have to reboot a few times for it to activate. After the first reboot, let the phone sit for a few minutes and then reboot again. You should be good to go after that.

How to fix return to official stock 4.3 att

Problems
what ive done to phone since ive had it.
Ive Kingo rooted
I deleted att bloatware
backed up first to TB
Have TB for 2 years so im not new to it.
I made back up on TB
did a factory data reset
tried to do the OTA update for the first 38mb file that gets you ready for 4.4
it never makes it past 25% install then fails
on a sidenote my phone says my phone stop a preventive download for safety reasons it shows a shield on notification tray hope that sounds familiar
Went to kingo to re root to install TB again to restore files all lost blank saves
So my phone works but its not updatable and I can reinstall all my apps i just cant update

Is it a modded rom like original. Theres over 300+ pages to go over if I new what key word to search that thread to find faster would be great.
Im partically looking for stock firmware 4.3 mj5 if its out there. Maybe Odin it then i could hopefully update then.T
Thanks
Well... That is where the problem is. We have a "revert to MJ5" thread, but it is modified stock to allow root. The OTA will fail with that. There are multiple fixes available for many circumstances... There really is now key word to use... Just read over the pages that start at around noon yesterday. That will greatly reduce what you are digging through.

If you installed the leaked kk and reverted back to 4.3 like many of us. You succeeded corrupting system files. Revert back to mj5. Without touching anything check for an update. Go the the original thread and look to a tutorial that asrael can't remember what the second part of his user name was. But replace all the Knox apps and a system file he talks about on his post. Then you should be able to get kk installed. It worked for me.

No its a factory update to 4.3 no Mods on rom just rooted
Unrooting seems to leave some junk behind that prevents the update.
Search for megalomaniac's threads. He has one with a Safestrap backup of a stock MJ5. Install Safestrap (you'll have to be rooted), install the MJ5 backup to the stock slot (it's 5 files - download them and put them into a folder on your SD card named MJ5 or something that makes sense to you). When you reboot, you'll be booting to a new installation of MJ5. Set it up, google account, at least, and you'll almost immediately get the NB4 update. (If Safestrap is still installed, clear data and cache and uninstall it - I can't recall if it is.) After that it should accept the 4.4.2 update.
If not, you can bring it to a Best Buy Samsung kiosk. The phone will look just like a normal untouched NB4 phone. They can flash NB4 to it, and theirs will accept the 4.4.2 update. They know there have been problems (even with totally stock phones), so there shouldn't be any problem - as long as you play dumb. "Why can't I get Kit Kat on my phone?"
I'll try best buy till easy solutions come available. My biggest concern is gps sucking and it's not worth to have a molded rom

I'm experiencing the same issue, and no - since the phone thinks it's a system app, it will not let you completely uninstall it. It will however give you the option to uninstall any updates.

Has this been done? I mean re-flash a stock NC2 over NC2 with the upgraded bootloader? If so, this will definitely get rid of that pesky SU app! Also, if it can be done, what do I say to the Samsung tech nerds about why i want it flashed?
Just asking.
Sounds like you're stuck with even more useless bloat then most.
Go to your nearest Samsung kiosk at your best buy and they will redo the update and that will get rid of the superuser files and all files associated with root. I just went and I'm root anything free. How I know is I used isis and didn't get the your phone is rooted message. Good Luck. O PS you won't loose anything meaning their update don't wipe your phone back to factory. But just in case do a BACKUP.

Thanks guys for all you replies. Will try going to best buy soon to see if they can do it for me.

Going bestbuy in your current state won't work. They are only able to do a update or emergency recovery to NC2, so you will still be stuck with non-working SuperSU still under /system/app even after reflashing. Unfortunately they don't have full factory reset image for 4.4.2 NC2 yet as of 5/17/2014.
What I did to remove that is to flash leaked Kitkat MLG with NC2 bootloader (look for the thread posted by Carl) using Odin, and this will wipe everything out. Then go to Bestbuy Samsung and update to NC2. This is the only way to remove SuperSU or any junk left behind.
As a precaution I did factory reset after I got mine updated to NC2 and after installing some stuff my PlayStore dissappeared so I had to do a factory reset another time. Now I think everything is pure stock.
And you don't have to make up any excuses about why you want it reflashed. Just tell them you had it rooted and now because att MFs locked down everything so bad you couldn't even get rid of it without flashing with leaked Kitkat. Samsung guys are there to help you.
I'm never going to buy another At&t crap again.

I'm going to have to disagree with you since I was in the same boat as the OP. I went to Best Buy Samsung and they did the update from Samsung site and it wiped out all traces of root files and supersu. They first had to download the update from Samsung site and then they connected my note 3 on nc2 with superus still there. Once they finished I checked my disabled apps and superus was no longer listed. I did a complete factory restore to verify it worked and superus was nowhere to be found. Not sure what is different from AT&T update and Samsung but Samsung version completely wipes out root.

[Q] Root for VS980 on KitKat 4.4.2?

Is there a method to root the Verizon LG G2 (VS980) on the stock OTA Kit Kat 4.4.2 build yet?
I bought the phone used, already had the OTA on it...now I just need root.
Not interested in Rom'ing, just need tethering without the $30/month charge for the few times I use it and need root to do it.
Thanks!

I'm considering a G2 also and have been wondering the same. From what I gathered you would have to go back to 4.2.2 first, gain root, and then flash back to 4.4.2. Someone correct me if I'm wrong please.

As far as that goes, how is installing the LG G2 unified drivers supposed to go? I found the download link for them in the main 200 page thread for this. Extracted the zip, but none of the .exe files do anything when run. Is that normal or is something wrong? For example I tried running InstallUSB64.exe but absolutely nothing happens.
Another more recent post on like page 185 of the thread had another download link, but that just leads to a file called "LG" with no extension and it doesn't appear to be a .zip

No you will need to root and then install custom recovery. Depending on what you are on. If you are on kitkat you can use autorec, and anything earlier you can use flashify.

I am not sure about the question but I know when you root this phone there is a trip where it will show in the lg menu that it is rooted. In order to get rid of that you will have to return to stock. I'm having a hell of a time trying to get this thing to root. I followed all of the instructions for installing the LG device drivers and when I go to run the IOroot25 it flashes really quickly and then goes away. USB debugging is enabled and I have tried it in ethernet mode and charging mode. Both produce the same result. Do I need to remove any other drives I might have on my computer in order to get it to work? Any other ideas?

Once it boots into recovery, did you scroll down and select "install from adb"?

Im having problems rooting it as well. I installed the latest drivers 1.14 I believe, and when trying to root it using ioroot25 it says downgrade to a previous version.
I do have it on Ethernet mode, and it reboots it into recovery, but that's it. I select apply update from adb but again, on ioroot it does nothing after the suggestion to downgrade.
any suggestions?
Make sure your phone is setup. Debugging mode is set. Unknown sources is set. Phone is on airplane mode. Plug into computer and start ioroot25 and follow steps

NEXUS 6 OTA Question

Hello XDA, I recently rooted / unlocked my N6. I used WugFresh NRT to do so. However, I did not like the process of rooting so I (using NRT) flashed stock + unrooted and then factory reset followed by an OEM lock. Reading about lollipops new way of OTA, can I perform OTAs? Or is it too late?

Hi,
As long as you are now stock, no system partition changes and Stock recovery, you should get and be able to install an OTA.
But, I don't own the device, so I'll have your thread moved to your device section in case there's something I don't know about the N6 in particular.
Good luck!
Thanks! I'm a newb to this whole technology stuff. My first nexus device as well. I soft bricked it too while attempting to remove a ROM.

Not sure if this is of any value to you but considering the device apps are similar it may be used.

Oh to be honest I'm done with rooting for now. Ill wait till 5.0.2 comes out if I OTA good then great but if it fails (hopefully ill still be able to access phone if it does) I'll then flash and root. Hopefully its not the latter

If your completely stock and unrooted their is nothing to worry about. You will indeed get updates.
Even with lollipops new way of checking?
They check blocks

if you are rooted and on TWRP. Just download the 5.0.1 image. Extract it till you see the system.img and boot.img. Also download twrp and run
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
I then reboot and then run
fastboot flash recovery whateverthefilefortwrpis.img
after that restart to system and twrp will ask if you want to install supersu. I let it install and now i'm on 5.0.1. Everything is intact and no wipe is required.
I don't think you quite understand what I am asking... I had 5.0.1 , I rooted and unlocked using NRT. I installed a ROM, didn't like it and attempted to remove. At the attempt to remove it, I screwed up and the setup wizard wouldn't start, so I FORCE FLASHED USING NRT Stock and unrooted. This allowed me to start the phone and use it, I factory reset then relocked the OEM. I do not want to root nor unlock, I am asking if that, after these events, and lollipops new way of OTA, will I be able to update via OTAs?

What is the new way lollipop handles OTA's?

Back then, it used to check file by file which was easily avoidable. Now, it checks a whole block of a partition, if it sees something as small a byte changed, it aborts. You can read more NY just googling Nexus 6 OTA root.

It's not hard to understand, actually quite simple. If you have flashed the stock image then there is nothing to worry about and there is no need for assumptions. Yes, you will receive OTAs. No need for the "what if" and "how about," if you aren't willing to accept an answer, don't ask a question.
If you're 100% stock then you will get ota.
Oh okay, thanks for the help! Once 5.0.2 rolls out, if it does not work, I'll just have to do it within NRT
