From what I see here, we are missing one thread for starters, to keep basic informations in one place. Yeah, it's all here (and on MoDaCo forum) but to find everything there is to know... pffft. A lot of searching and zillion tabs opened - there is a thread for everything, but scattered around. So, here is what I did with my Optimus, all in one place (SD card recommended for some steps) guide wanna-be:
1. install alternative launcher (ADW, GO Launcher, LauncherPro... search for reviews, try them out)
2. get root with SuperOneClick
3. install ClockworkMod Recovery because there is no other way to apply patches, updates or flash custom ROM's, and it's easy to make backup and restore too (system only, before some critical flashing I would suggest to create backup of internal memory or you could lose everything, like photos, music etc.)
4. from recovery install Paul's patches (copy zip file to phone/SD, shut down, boot to recovery with *hold power and vol- buttons*, select flash zip, reboot):
Stock Performance Pack
Stock Patch Pack - AOSP style lockscreen
there is also Stock Fix Pack - Camera with brightness fix + silent camcorder but looks like I don't need it
5. freeze and/or uninstall some of LG's apps like in this thread here. Most important ones I guess would be F-secure, LG Home (you have alternative one, right?), Car, and SNS.
Phone works like a charm . There are also custom ROM's that you could flash through ClockworkMod. While I flashed the hell out of my previous phone, I'm still on stock so no advices in that direction but it is really easy. Just be careful with wiping - everything on internal memory could be lost.
Also, tried to theme it using http://uot.dakra.lt/ but that didn't work well - got stuck on LG boot logo and phone was dead, nandroid restore didn't help. I downloaded a custom ROM (what the heck, stock one was destroyed anyway) but even flashing new ROM from recovery didn't help. There are few threads that go there and this is my humble guide how to fix this but remember - THIS WIPES INTERNAL MEMORY - and I learned it the hard way:
1. download stock ROM (Firmware) from LG Optimus 2x P990 Original ROM's, in my case it was BIN_LGP990AT-00-V10c-EUR-XX-APR-16-2011+0 (Euro open), unzip it
2. download SmartFlash from this thread on MoDaCo forum (just SmartFlash and drivers, baseband is not covered here) and follow instructions. Only difference is that you DON'T flash "fls", it is baseband. Other one, that big, fat .bin file (LGP990AT-00-V10c-EUR-XX-APR-16-2011+0_AP.bin) is the one needed
This is it, after 2-3 minutes Optimus wakes up and works again, completely stock, clean and un-rooted. If you had nandroid backup (from recovery) and it still is on your SD card, after rooting and installing ClockworkMod again you can apply it and OS will be the same as it was. Except for everything that was on internal memory.
Of course, I take no responsibility if anything of this breaks your phone
If you have some advices, please write.
Also, if someone could tell me how to get wifi auto reconnecting after sleep or coming back in range, that would be awesome.
Ok, wifi sorted!
My baseband was rather old, version 405. So I flashed baseband 622 with RIL from here: [Baseband+RIL] 1035.21_20110622 (latest at the moment)
Click on MoDaCo forum link for instructions. Create nandroid backup in recovery first, OS was reverted to original and internal memory wasn't wiped, but did complete backup anyway.
RIL is in zip file, so it's obvious - flash it from recovery after baseband is done.
After nandroid restore had to apply Paul's patches again and that was it
Now wifi reconnects, 3G seems like is waking up faster. Still to early to comment on battery life but for now I'm satisfied
edit: for some reason, maybe the problem was with WiFinder app and not baseband. Strange. Switched to WiFi Manager
I was messing around with some of the VERY FEW roms for my sprint tab, FUBAR'd it a few times using the alpha releases from various devs, and decided to wait until it gets more polished.
I successfully retrieved the base ea24 rom from the ea24 flasher tar file and flashed through heimdall. I screwed it up once( decided to fail on modem flash gg on emergency recovery), got it right the second time and now Im on ea 24. no FCs, etc.. BUT I cant get the ota update to eb28 so I can go to ef17. any reason why?
EDIT: and by cant "get" I mean the update notification NEVER shows.
also another question for the people passing through, anyone care to point me to a WORKING version of the beterthanlife GB roms for the sprint tab. I keep hearing about v1 being stable, but i cant find it anywhere( we all know for now v2 boot loops)
http://www.mediafire.com/file/6ea8mjwhcwxcco0/SPH-P100_EA24-EB28.zip
grab that file, save it to the root of your sd card as update.zip, reboot into stock recovery and flash update.zip then you'll be on EB28. From there, you'll want to do the same thing (if you want to get to stock GB) with this file
http://www.mediafire.com/file/cngx5e67dgbq04y/update_from_EB28_to_EF17.zip
As far as the Better than Life rom.. V1 works, with the Stock kernel, not the ext4/CWM kernel.
Here's a link to V1:

And the stock kernel:

Hi everyone,
I'm new here and this is my first post. First of all I would like to thanks pawitp and kasper_h for giving new life for our old device SGS i9000. I just wanted to share my experience installing Mackay ROM and wanted to know why my device freeze upon boot after flashing this ROM.
Steps done:
1. Coming from SlimBean (4.3), flashed CM 10.2
2. Do a factory data reset, wipe system/data/dalvik/cache
3. Flash Mackay ROM and GApps
4. Upon restart; freeze on Samsung device logo, waited for a long time but did not continue to kernel/boot/anim.
5. Tried to boot recovery, but still just freeze on Samsung device logo
6. Boot into Download Mode and flash Semaphore kernel from Cyanogen using heimdal tool
7. Flash Mackay ROM then Mackay Kernel then GApps
8. Successful boot!
I've been following Mackay ROM development and very satisfied with it, but every time I will flash/update Mackay ROM, I must remember to flash also the corresponding Mackay Kernel over it, otherwise I'll have to go through steps 4 to 7 above to fix the boot freeze.
Now, my question is, why my device freeze on boot? Isn't Mackay ROM already include the kernel?
I wanted to help in development even by just testing the ROM, but newbies are not allowed to post on development tread...

Hi, im new too
Which Mackay ROM are you taling about? Because i had the same problem flashing Mackay rom 3.99-the last one and i couldnt had flashed it unless i did a dirty flash but even then i had many problems. So i dont know. Currently im using OMNI Mackay -the latest build-and im very satisfied with it, there are only few issues... but in the end its way fastest rom for me before it i had been using Gamerzrom 4.0 for half a year and it was way the best for android 4.2.2

I'm using this Mackay ROM 4.1.7
I also wanted to try the OMNI build, but there's no separate kernel for it yet.
I've only successfully using Mackay ROM 4.1.7 by flashing the ROM then before I reboot I also flash the corresponding Mackay kernel 0.605, if I don't flash the separate kernel then when I restart, my phone freeze on Samsung device boot logo, which I'm wondering since as far as I know Mackay ROM package is already complete, I'm also sure that the ZIP file I downloaded is not corrupted cause I already downloaded it twice and tested it on WinRAR.

Have you tried going back to stock android 2.3.6? Maybe that would work for you
@c-droid
@lulek01
Guys, which was your last stock ROM installed before using custom ROMs?
Froyo or Gingerbread?
As I've said on my OP, step no.1 I came from SlimBean, then since its recommended on Mackay ROM development thread I flashed CM 10.2 first before finally going to Mackay ROM.
Even now that I'm on Mackay ROM, when updating to new version using Mackay's TWRP, I still have to flash the separate Mackay kernel after Mackay ROM before restarting, otherwise my phone will freeze on Samsung device logo upon boot.

OK, then we know at least that your phone has a proper bootloader.
For people who upgrade directly from Froyo is very important to flash a GB bootloader, as all newer custom ROMs suppose that GB bootloader was already installed.

You didn't get it mate.... I meant: which was your last stock ROM.... Froyo or Gingerbread?
Oh... sorry...
so... before I've flash the custom ROM SlimBean...
damn... I've already forgot, all I remember was I've waited for the phone's warranty to end before trying out custom ROMs, but I knew I've downloaded and installed all the OTAs before, just forgot the last version I've received...
Anyway, do you know how can I update ONLY the bootloader? without doing a factory data reset / wiping system/data...

Yep, probably you do have a Gingerbread bootloader then (2.3.x), after all the updates.
Froyo firmweres were 2.2.x
If not sure, here you can see it in my i9000 thread (also with video) how to flash only a bootloader and there you can download all the files.
Make sure to read whole the step-by-step guide for flashing with Odin under section 2 as flashing a bootloader shouldn't go wrong.
Thanks tetakpatak,
I've read your thread, specially the warning regarding flashing bootloader that one mistake could hard brick the phone.
So, I wanted to clarify some things before I proceed on flashing the bootloader...
1. The baseband of the bootloader attached on your thread is XWJVU while my phone is XXJVK, should I search for bootloader the same as mine or the one on your thread is fine?
2. On your thread, the text guide says to choose the bootloader file under "PDA", but on the video, you choose it under "BOOTLOADER", I assume the video is correct as I can see the phone successfully boots...
3. I couldn't see clearly on the video and also not specifically stated on your text guide if I have to choose on Odin the "i9000Boot_XWJVU.zip" file or I have to extract first the "i9000Boot_XWJVU.tar" inside it and choose that one...
Sorry if I asked too much, not that I'm skeptical with your giude, just following your warning...
I was about to try tetakpatak guide on flashing only the bootloader, but I don't know why my phone was not detected by Odin?
I run Odin as administrator, choose the bootloader file, tick the "Phone Bootloader Update" and uncheck "Auto Reboot", then turn-on the phone to download mode, connect to PC, Windows detected the phone as "Gadget Serial device", but did not appear on Odin...
Hello guys im new here and sorry if i post it wrong. I installed this UNOFFICIAL CyanogenMOD 12.1 for my Galaxy S3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/development/5-1-x-cyanogenmod-12-1-t3066864 . And yes i know its an unofficial rom to S3. But i have a question about this i installed it this night worked flawless only problem i have with it now atm and wondering if more of you S3 users use this custom rom. My Camera does not work if i start the camera that follows the CM its says just Camera has stopped working. If i open up google camera the rear/back camera just getting purpel/pink stripes over half the screen and it freeze. Like if i point the camera at my shoes it will just freeze there no matter where i point it.
When i then take picture nothing happens. But the selfie camera (front one) works but not the back one. So my question is should i just try to wipe the data and rom from my Clockworkmod recovery and reinstall the rom? I will point all the steps i did.
Step 1: Rooted stock rom jelly bean 4.3 android version with CF-Auto-Root-m0-m0xx-gti9300.zip through Odin.
Step 2: Made sure by my self the root was success full and it was downloaded the root checker and it told the phone is rooted did also check with SuperSU same there.
Step 3: I installed the CWM 6.0.4.4 through odin v3.09. booted the phone and see that it installed right and it did.
Step 4: Downloaded the CM rom from the first link and putted into my SDcard and gapps for Android 5.1.X from CM wikipedia.
Step 5: Installed ROM Manager from play store. Checked again if my root was succesfully on JB 4.3 it was.
Step 6: Opened ROM Manager and installed the CM 12.1 from the link in this post checked Backup this rom and checked Delete data and cache then restart and install.
Step 7: Install is done booted into recovery mode and installed GAPPS and then downloaded the camera but did not work.
So is it anyway to fix this or have an offical CM 12.1 for S3? And sorry again if i posted wrong
