Hi,
After having looked at tons of theads and many searches, perhaps you can help, please?
I'd like to unlock via HTCdev and go S-OFF.
As I have many apps with their individual settings, an extensive calendar and > 1500 contacts,
I wonder how to backup all that stuff as unlocking wipe everything.
Thank you very much in advance

you might want to have a look at an app called Helium by koush, download it from playstore, its able to backup without root, don't forget though, unlocking your bootloader will also erase your sdcard, so be sure to copy the backup off your phone once its complete to your computer.
This will however only backup apps and data etc, I use my google account to backup my contacts, as for the rom itself, you will have to create a backup manually after unlocking the bootloader with a custom recovery like twrp.
You may also be interested in doing an adb backup, as this is something you can do on a fully stock unrooted device. Here is a link to a guide here on XDA:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/general/guide-making-backups-adb-t2411965
and you can also just google "adb backup" for a wealth of info on this option.

Thanks for the suggestion. I remember to have tried backing up my HTC One S with adb a couple of years ago. At that time it would not restore the backup. However, I'll do the backup just in case...
Just a thought:
I understand it's possible to gain temporary root.
Isn't there a way to pull an image of the whole system and restore exactly that later?

You can actually boot cwm recovery from the fastboot folder on your computer, with your phone in the bootloader to do a full system. Data, sdcard backup including the stock recovery to your computer without actually installing the custom recovery, but I'm really sorry, I can't remember how to do it, it's been years since I've done it that way, a bit of googling and you may be able to find it, not to sure either if your bootloader needs to be already unlocked to do it.

it's "fastboot boot <name of recovery>.img"
however, this only works on hboot 1.44, after that (hboot 1.54+ it will just freeze, and not enter recovery)
and I think you need an unlocked bootloader for that anyway

I agree with this too. I've heard about people having trouble applying an adb backup.ab, so it would definitely be a good idea to use helium too. Just make sure to set it to save the .apks too so you wont have to hit the playstore for those. Also, do remember to move whatever backup you make off of the device and as far as contacts, make sure they are set to be backed up to your gmail account. They probably already are judging by the fact that you already have so many, unless you collected them all since you got the phone. I mean, 1500 contacts would mean you have added 5 unique contacts per day since the release of this particular phone which is unlikely.

You are right.
But I saved my first contacts in an HP-41CX and have migrated data since then.
Some of these phone numbers are still in use.
Since 1984.
Sorry for this off-topic post.

Download quickboot from the market. Open it up and select recovery. Should be pretty self explanatory from there.

"nandroid backup/restore"
To me, it sounds like you heard about this somewhere, and thus now want to perform a backup. But we need to take a step back if thats the case, because it sounds like you're missing key knowledge of how the android system works.
In order to perform a backup you need to have an unlocked phone. There's a few steps to get there, in both setup of your computer, unlocking, flashing, and then if you choose flashing a custom baked ROM, but a ROM is not required for backup/restore. How-to w/ video!
The unlock process requires you to agree that you are voiding your warranty, if this doesn't sound acceptable to you, stop and take heart that most of your data is backed up in the (google) cloud (provided you actually input your contacts into your gmail account).
Next you need to install Amon RA's Recovery (also described in the how-to above).
Nandroid backup is included in Amon RA's recovery, when you load into the recovery (accessible from fastboot, or by doing an adb reboot recovery). The option to do a backup/restore is there in the list and is as simple as following the on screen instructions.

Are you sure there are no way to backup or extract the firmware whithout voiding the warranty ?
someone says it is possible before root (on droid maybe?)
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8920841#post8920841
Ehow's howto is definitely wrong.
Nandroid is only provided with custom recoverys.
And custom recovery is only installable if you are root.
where to get 1.0-ERE27-nexusone-insecure.zip ?
ok thank for clarifying this ,
BTW i am looking for this file :
http://www.romraid.com/paul/nexusone/1.0-ERE27-nexusone-insecure.zip
can you help
I have downloaded a "1.1-nexusone-insecure.zip" last week but it is useless with a locked bootloader (operation not permitted when flashing).
The only aim of superboot is to get root on your current rom.
But the first step to do anything about root is to unlock the bootloader.
And void the warranty.
Hi everybody
I'm new to Android Mobile and I got my HTC ONE just recently. I have to say that I'm in love with it, finally something I can really use.
I would like to root my phone and I went through several doc/videos about how to unlock the boot loader and how to root it.
I feel quite confident to do that on my own (I know, I know... I'm a lady and usually this kind of stuff are for boys only... but I'll give it a try).
I have only few questions if you can help an not expert user as myself:
1. after root my HTC One, will my mobile able to receive software updates pushed from the vendor?
2. by reading the forum, my understanding is that some of the system apps will be removed (not big deal actually and I understand I can recover them in some way). However, will I be able to recover all the other apps installed, phone settings and the usual data from my backup? I do a daily backup of my phone via the system Backup & Restore utility which stored the data in DropBox.
Thanks a lot boys and I sorry for the silly questions. I did my best to search on my own but still a bit confused
When you unlock the bootloader, you eliminate all OTA updates. That is my understandin.
If you backup'd up with method X (whatever method that maybe), I dont see why you cant continue to use method X to restore your settings as well.
When i forgot got my phone, I unlocked and rooted immediately. I installed titanium backup (thats my method of choice), and transfered the content from my old phone and use titanium to restore everything.

1. Yes you will receive update notifications but depending on what recovery you have you might not be able to install the update until you go to stock recovery.
2. Yes you will be able to restore your data and it work rather well. Don't remember if it backed up the app data (settings for apps accounts save games etc....) and depending on your settings it may not backup pictures and videos so make a copy on a computer if you have pics you don't want to lose.

Let me start off by congratulating you on an excellent choice of phone!
In response to your questions, I havesome answers for you:
1. After unlocking the bootloader/rooting your phone, you will still be able to receive OTA updates. However, to actually install them you will have to relock the bootloader. Take care when installing OTA updates, as they may contain "fixes" that will disable re-unlocking the bootlader or rooting.
2. You should be able to recover all of your apps, settings, and data. Once rooted, I highly recommend Titanium backup for apps and data, and MyBackupPro for contacts, call logs, messages, and such.
Thank you guys, you are wonderful! I love u!!!
Last question then I promise I will not bothering anymore
I can see from the tutorial that once I've unlocked the boot loader I will need to use a recovery utility like TWRP.
I'm not going to install any custom ROM for now and I would like to keep the original one. The only thing that I really need is root privileges to rid off some apps that were installed by the carrier (which I hate), as well the carrier boot up logo animation.
So, for instance... I'm running at the moment the 1.29.841.2 software version.
Will the recovery process keep the phone on the same version or it will install a flat one without the updates?

Not bothering at all, that's what the forums are here for.
The recovery process will leave the phone on the same version that has been installed. All apps will need to be re-updated, but the system version will stay the same.

Very happy thx again guys!
So I picked up a Dev Edition XT1060 on swappa so I can get ARUnchained running on it, and was wondering what's the easiest way to clone my current locked, stock, unrooted XT1060 to the new one? I've had varying levels of success in the past with the Moto "Migrate" app, ADB backup/restore from the command line, and Helium, but was wondering if there is anything better out there now.
Don't think so, not on an unrooted device. Best you can do is helium for user apps and data.
And in my opinion....that's as far as you want to go. Restoring anything system related to a new device is asking for problems. ?

KJ is right if you are going to a different phone.
But if rooted only & going to the same phone, as in a boot unlock which wipes data. You can (I have not tested) use "Online back up" apk with root only. At least on paper it should work .

They are identical system images, AFAIK, so there shouldn't be anything different in the system files, and the DevEd has already been unlocked by the previous owner. So I don't think I need any of that stuff transferred anyway, which should cut down on the time involved. I haven't played around with trying to restore an ADB backup from a different device, so I'm not sure if there's going to be any issues there. The only time I've used that method was to backup my device before using RSD to flash a different factory image, and even then it wasn't a very smooth operation. I guess I'll just have to try it and find out

Edit: I'm wondering if maybe you misunderstood what I was talking about with the ADB backup/restore. Here's more information: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-nexus/general/guide-phone-backup-unlock-root-t1420351
From my early experience with Carbon (which is now called Helium) it was basically the same thing as the ADB backup/restore function, Carbon was just a user friendly wrapper for it. But I could be way off on that point, it just seemed like it was doing exactly the same thing in the background.

I only figure that on "paper" the online BACKUP should work with root only. Not restore, mind you, that needs custom recovery. Which one would have after the obligatory data wipe which moto enforces to unlock.

See my edited reply above. Also, the phone is already unlocked by the previous owner (bought it used on Swappa) so I only need to put custom recovery on it and root it, and whatever data transfer method I decide to use.
I thought I would post this also for those wanting a way to backup, while rooted, and then restore their nandroid when unlocked.
Hi, I am sure this is answered somewhere here, but there is so much cumulative information and half-answers to go through.
First the short version then some additional info.
Short;
How can I do a complete backup of a new TF701 so that I could restore it to the state it arrived in before I would unlock the bootloader, root, and install a recovery?
Info;
Although I am not an expert, I have rooted/put clockwork recovery on a few different phones and tablets. I am familiar with adb and know there are techniques to use that to do a backup.
A bit more info;
I have another TF701 that is rooted and works reasonably well, but I did something at some point that now it randomly reboots, as well as it will not install the update to go from JB to KK (I get a "not enough space" error that I assume is really a misleading error based on having encrypted the device).
On the new TF701, after turning it on, all I have done is apply the various system updates. I would like to capture the device in this state so that in the future I can restore to it. IE, that I would both be able to restore to this clean KK as well as stock recovery, and anything else (if there is) software-wise that might cause the device to misbehave. Having a re-locked bootloader isn't necessarily a requirement, as I'm not sure how hard that is, but if possible I would like the state captured to be with the device as it currently is with the locked bootloader.
If possible, I don't want to root, install a recovery, and only then be able to do a backup and have to rely on someone's post of a "Stock recovery" or image.
My main concern is not around returning the device and getting support or things like that; it is being able to return the device to a known, pristine state, since most backup methods don't seem to backup everything; they either only backup apks, or only backup the system rom, or only the "sdcard", etc.

The short answer is: You can't.
You can't do anything in terms of backing up anything system related with a locked bootloader
You cannot relock the bootloader
You cannot make a nandroid without a custom recovery installed.
What's wrong with the stock recovery image and the stock rom you can find on Droidbasement????
They are just that: Pure stock. If you flash those you're tablet is back to factory specs except for the BL unlock.
Try formatting /data on your old tablet, then reflash the rom. Most likely your problems are related to the encryption....

Well, I said I understand I might need to unlock the bootloader.
I don't understand why, for example;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-nexus/general/guide-phone-backup-unlock-root-t1420351

"You're back to normal, short of possibly some widgets on the home screen. [...] this will not back up SMS messages"
Why??? Is this a bug in adb? something about not being able to lock the file system? Those questions are rhetorical, but I don't understand why everything with Android seems to be "it works, ... except ..."

Probably nothing, but what is it's provenance? It was not posted by Asus, right? How do I know it was not posted by some hacker who has added three lines of code that captures every "keystroke" I make? Yes, you should only download from reputable sources. How do you find out if they are reputable? Google is your friend.
How could they do it? Because they know a whole lot more than you do.... or I for that matter.
But it's totally up to you to benefit or not from a boatload of work done for free in the spirit of sharing.

Hi everbody, I have a rooted phone which I wanted to unroot to be able to install the 5.1.1 update. But when I unrooted the phone without even doing a factory reset or cleaning the cache or all of those wiping the phone procedures, the phone got totally wiped and also the memory got completely wiped with all folders and whatever gone. Pictures are backed up to Google Drive and numbers are in Google Contacts but there are some folders and backed up apps that I wanted to have.
Is there any way this can be restored? I'm guessing there is not, but I still wanted to put the question out there if anybody knows a way?

Is there any way this can be restored? I'm guessing there is not, but I still wanted to put the question out there if anybody knows a way?

1) Not sure why your device got wiped...
2) Only way to restore is if you had a backup stored off line...
3) There is no reason to "unroot" if you intend to fastboot flash the factory image.
4) Using the "unroot" feature is NOT sufficient if you want to flash the OTA update. It still leaves a few modified files around, and the updater script will not install the OTA. You will need to fastboot flash the factory system.img. If you are going to do that, then just fastboot flash 5.1.1 and be done with it.

Op what "method" or steps did you take to "un-root"?
Manually, or some toolkit? Did you re-lock your bootloader, or check or forget to un-check some sort of reset my phone to factory settings setting?
