Hi, I've been using my S3 4G for quite some time now and on a mobile plan which gives me 2GB per month for free. I've never exceeded this 2GB and usually don't even reach 1.5GB. However, this month there has been an unusual spike in my mobile data and my apps are taking up so much more. The only reason I can think of is that there were a few days where I used data at home (I usually only use it when I'm outside) because my Wifi was down. Other than that my usage is roughly the same. So could anyone please help me fix this? Thanks!
My data cycle starts on the 8th of each month. Will include screen shots of my mobile data screen below.
the reason for me is quite obvious...you used your mobile connection while your wireless was down....and used it for some time...i did the same once(didn't lost wi-fi, lost power all together for 1 night)...

Nothing suprising here mate, the apps data usage on the pictures tell everything, there is nothing to fix here! just be careful with your mobile data usage and try to avoid apps using a lot of data while youre on mobile data

Just checked my monthly bills and seems I'm using around 1.5GB a month in data. That seems high to me, so I thought I'd see how you all were doing.
I leave my wifi on, so whenever I'm in range, my phone connects to my wifi network and stays on it while I'm at home. Only time I really use data is at work or school, though I don't do much web surfing on my phone then. Primary uses are Gmail, Gtalk, and web surfing. I've occasionally used it for navigation with Maps. No tethering at all. I'm not even rooted.
In February I only used 500mbs but in January I used nearly 4GB
Do you have a limit or are you just interested in what other people use? lol
How do we check?

Just interested... I thought most people were using around 500ish mb, so I thought mine was excessive though I don't think I use it that much.

Log into your account on T-mobile.com, drill down to a specific month's bill, along the left click on See Call Records. That will show your specific monthly usage, and you can then click on the Data tab and it will show you a total data usage number.
Edit: Just checking the older bills, when I had the G1, I average 300-400mb per month of usage. When I got the Nexus One is when that jumped by 400-500%.
Get either of these apps
3G Watchdog or NetCounter
They will watch your usage and let you know when u reach ure data plan limit, (you put ure data plan limit in so it knows what it is )
i used 700MB last month with 1GB data allowance
Just over 500mb over Feb (only had nexus from 12th so it's actually only 16 days)
Average per day is 40-50mb or so of standard use and that jumps to 200+ using spotify (streamed music). Most heavy use is at home on wifi - syncing offline playlists etc.
Wow, that is crazy. I'm on AT&T with an unlocked Roger's Dream to get 3G signal (soon upgrading to a Nexus on T-Mo) and I use my phone & 3G excessively for streaming, tethering, internet, everything basically. In January I used 12.5 gigs In february I think I only used about 4.5 gigs, but I'm ALWAYS over at least 4 gigs. Wow lol
I have a very fast internet connection at home, so I only used 646MB of data last month. But, I expect that to go up since using Subsonic on my Nexus One does not destroy my battery as much as it did on my G1. But, now my wife has the G1, I wonder what our total data usage is going to be for this month (especially since we are travelling next weekend)...
I use about 5-10 gigs monthly for downloads and everything..but i do have a 50 gigs plan at ridiculously cheap price so i don't mind using data 24/7
I only signed 200MB/month plan, is there any good tool to monitor daily data usage? Thanks in advance.
3G watchdog seems to have good rating in the market. D/l'd it, but I haven't really used it. Give that a try.
I use Netcounter seems to work fine and is does not have a whole lot of "bling" to it. It just does what you got it for watch how much data you are using.
I use 3g watchdog along with APNdroid. 3g watchdog counts all your usage for the month, and you can set warnings and to shut it off if it goes over a certain usage with APNdroid.
I have my 3G watchdog set to turn off all my data automatically if I get to 99% of my usage using APNdroid. It then turns it back on automatically after the new month starts.
P.S. You can use 'AT&T myWireless' to check your data usage straight from at&t.
I use the AT&T app - it isn't that great.
But.. the AT&T website actually has something useful for those that are curious about their data usage. You can check your past data usage over the past year and gives you a pretty bar graph.
Thankfully mine was well below the 2 gig limit I have for my current plan. Got screwed with my grandfathered data plan since I switched from iPhone to Android

Hi,
I use New Zealand Vodafone, and prepay plan for 3g,
it is only 100mb per month, and when I turned on my 3g about 2 hours, and my vodafone widget showed me 10mb used.
however, I did not touch my phone at all, and 10mb internet usage gone.
I know there are little bit traffic even if I don't use, but 10mb is a lot.
When I used Nexus S there was no issue with 3g, and 100mb was enough..!!!
So, I would ask any guys have had measure 3g usage?
all depends on what apps you are running etc
yeah.. main thing is the background apps. i hope there is some way to find out which apps are using internet at the background.
what you can do is press the power button for a second and you'll get a menu. just deactivate data connection. activate it only when you need something. but obviously, this means you wont get any real time incoming messages from messenger apps. but still you save a lot of data usage.. and battery
There is 3g watch dog or something application is there, you can get idea which application consuming how much data.
100MB is enough??
I'm on a 1GB 3G plan and its been 10 days or so 300mb is already gone and i'm not using the fone for youtube or something. Its just emails, Latitude social networking and whatspping.
I barely use my wifi now as 3G is much faster
This must be a joke right? 2gb a months i have which is quite terrible. Switching to unlimited network soon.
100mb/month? Get a different phone. Without proper internet you disrespect 80% of Note's great functionality!!
Seriously, get some internet

In that case just disable data network and use only wifi :/
You can install some network tracker to see which apps use net. Turn off auto updating in abdroid market for all apps

Wow only 100mb!
I have a limit of 1000mb, which can be a pain in the ass sometimes, but if you use WiFi at home, it is not a big issue.
Anyways, as the others said, use an app to track what uses the data.
I use sometimes only 2-5MB per day with normal use.
I use My Data Manager to keep track of my use , it is a great program, it shows the usage in the drop down menu
Try netcounter or 3g watch dog apps, you can set your own daily weekly monthly alerts, think 3g watch dog can be linked to app called apndroid to cut off usage when limits crossed. But in your situation best to switch off mobile network from settings menu to avoid excessive data charges.
For example I crossed 500 Mb today in less than half hour downloading some games and additional files from gameloft.
Use opera mini browser for decreasing data use when browsing and don't use stock browser when using mobile network.use stock browser only when on wifi in your scenario.switch off all synching in settings menu.switch off roaming in menu as well.but then doing all this you limit the devices capabilities but you have got to do what you need to do to suit your predicament
We have 2gb for 10$/month and 10gb for 20$/month, I think I'm switching to 10gb because I still feel like I limit myself

Yes 100 MB is quite less, n difficult to manage, when you have lovely G-Note on your Hand.
I am using 500MB/month plan. but actually i do have wifi access at both Home n Work place. I simply managed it with app phoneweaver. It turns on wifi n turns off when i am reaching n leaving from these places. In addition it swithoff data + wifi both just after few min of my sleeping time, as well turns on just before i wakeup.

It might be useful to consider a COMBINATION of options:
1. Consider switing to a 2G network connection if available, as the same is much cheaper than a 3G in your area. Needless to mention, u will have to compromise the speed while on 2G
2. Use Wifi, is appropriate places, and as suggested by Dr.Ketan, u may use apps like phoneweaver etc. to manage the location based switing of wifi/ data network
3. Use apps like 3Gwatchdog to monitor your apps and kill unnecessary data hogers
4. and yes, if u love your note, U MUST HAVE DATA NETWORK or WIFI connection always ON, as or else... u know u are not optimizing you investment on note
5: Last but not the least: I believe, if u can afford a superb device like note, then I am sure its just a matter of "state of mind" to UPGRADE and get ADAPTED to a good 3G scheme. (am based in India, and I am on Vodafone 3G plan of 3GB per month, and I pay INR 850 (thats about USD 16.7 per month), and initially I thought this was too much I am used to this "state of mind"..... just give this a thought my friend
Power Button and Switch "Data Network Mode" off. Forever.
I don't know how you guys survive with 100MB per month. They shouldn't even have a plan like that.
I was able to adapt my non-smartphone data plan to the gNote on ATT
So unlimited costs me 15$/month
I use at least 15GB a month.
I have activated 3G service on my note. Got the 2gb for Rs 450 plan. I have noticed that there is a huge difference between the usage shown my 3g watchdog (and settings>data usage) and Airtel records (by *123*11#). If I use "Internet" browser just for a minute of casual browsing and close the browser, then upon checking the balance on airtel it shows I've used 9-15mb within a minute whereas 3g watchdog reports a much realistic usage. The difference is nearly 10 times.
I have tried searching a lot online. Have got tips like restricting background usage of apps to wifi only and disabling automatic backup and restore. Have done all that and yet the problem continues.
What could be he problem? I'm totally at a loss. Its been just 3 days and I've hardly used 3g since I have wifi at home and yet as pet airtel records I have used more than 400mb. No videos or songs were downloaded and no YouTube.
Have any of you guys noticed such a huge difference between the usage reported by your device and operator? A few kb here and there is fine but 4mb cannot be reported as 40mb! Please help.

Same problem with me here in Delhi. Casually use internet just for browsing. But, the data usage is always way too high. I think it is a problem with the Airtel servers not the galaxy note.

I use 3g on my note in Mumbai(Airtel) with the same plan that you have mentioned. I have tried many data counters apps and settled on onavo because it gives me the closest value that you get on *121*11#. Still when onavo reaches 80-85% my plan gets over and they start charging per kb. But your case sounds too extreme. If as you say u don't have many apps and have no mods or custom rom then its Airtel to blame.

What about the inbuilt data usage counter in ICS? Does it show the correct usage?
Thats way too extreme bro even I'm from Calcutta although I don't use Airtel cos their network sucks at my place.
It seems the apps are eating up all your bandwidth. I am on Aircel 3G and don't have problem like yours.
Since you tried all the possible methods all I can suggest you to keep Data Network Mode deactivated when you not using it and also switch to GSM mode.
Use 3G mode only when you plan to use it because androids are way to net savvy
Atleast that way it won't be able to use the high speed network and you can still save a lot of your data.
I too noted the difference between the third party app and the stock one. As soon as i installed a third party one the stock showed very little activity. Just use the stock data monitory and track your usage and also switch to 2G when u dont need 3G to save battery and usage. Also the *121*11# dosnt seem to be working for me? I am too on Airtel (postpaid)

in my case a third party data monitor app 3g watchdog and stock ics data monitor show nearly the same usage.. difference of .01-.10 KB maybe. Try *123*11#. That shows very very high usage.

I don't gave that many apps.. lol.. what will eat bandwidth? Haha.. surprisingly in 2g mode on a 2g plan the data usage reported is somewhat believable.
Any kolkata users using 3g on operators besides airtel and aircel? Vodafone maybe? I'm thinking of porting out to vodafone.
I talked to an airtel representative and he's like go to a relationship centre and prove it first and only then we will check. I really don't think I have the time for that.

People actually use the 3g data plans?? there are other ways to get 3g .
Sent from my GT-N7000 using free xda app-developers app for poor people
I recommend to root your phone and get LBE Privacy Guard or even LBE Security Manager from the corresponding xda thread. It let's you restrict internet acces for every app. I use Security Manager since it offers an option to set up certain apps so you are asked if they should be allowed to access internet. Privacy Guard only offers the possinility to allow or deny internet access permanently.
Sent from my Galaxy Note running ICS
I'm a little wary about rooting. What I'm planning to do is to try our sim cards of different networks in kolkata and see whether the problem persists or not. If yes then obviously something is wrong with my note. If not then its Airtel's mistake and I'd port out to that operator which does fairbl billing, retaining my existing number. I dont really see any other option left.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
OK. I tried his. On my 3g plan, I started using GSM ONLY mode from network options. Now I believe the note will connect only to EDGE and not 3g, right?
With this in mind I browsed 3-4 pages on tumblr for about a minute and disconnected. My operator shows 9.5mb of usage in a minute of browsing! Is that even possible on EDGE? Can I use 9.5mb of data in one minute with speeds offered on Edge?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
No it's not possible. Edge offers a data rate of 384 kbit/s. 384 * 60 /1000 / 8 = 2.88 MB. You should definitely contact your provider.

I have a Galaxy Note with 4.0.4 rooted. Life mobile (EE)
I have a 1gb data plan, I have had a problem with this for the last 4 months, I only use my data plan when away from home and no access to wifi, but all other times i turn it OFF, but lately at 2400hr or 0:00hr midnight something turns on my data plan and upload/download data, no way of telling large amounts of data sometimes as big as 199mg at one time..
I have gone through 1gb of data within 1wk of limited data use, facebook, mail, whatsapp, most of the time using Wifi.
It seem i am not the only one this is happening to (check your data usage via your provider phone account),there are many cases on the internet, but no one has found the real reason,a lot has pointed to the sim provider ???
Can someone throw some light on this..
I never knew that Data plan can be automatically be turn on then off by app on a phone...
Data conection always OFF
WiFi when I can get it On
thanks you
I'd guess a rogue app, turning on data
Not sure if this will work as don't have the N7000 in front of me & not even 100% sure "data" will show in Android 6 due to app permission changes in Marshmallow, it might be under device or something.......
Go to settings>apps>gear wheel>app permissions
then look for data permission touch it to see & change which apps have premission to turn data on & off
