Horrible H.264 decoding

I'm not sure that how many people at here know this fact.
Tegra 2's H.264 decoding is waaaay worse than Hummingbird(Galaxy S)
It cannot run any HD H.264 video HP.

Tegra2 can decode 720p at AVC HP and 1080p at AVC MP with reasonable/usually bitrates at 30p.
€dit: Just seen that u have the korean model, right? AFAIK the LG-Player isn't supporting the mkv-container,
allthough Tegra 2 would be up for the task (at 720p30 HP) as mentioned earlyer.

I think its the same issue as Adam had with the video/audio desync. Its not a hardware limitation.

I don't get it. I've tried various videos and none of them work properly. However, the demo video files that were on the device (1080p) run perfectly. No frame-skipping at all.
Is there something I'm missing?

I was kind of baffled by this too.
Brilliant playback on the included 1080p files.
So i thought yay lets grab some 1080p trailers from youtube with tubemate.
But alass. not very smooth! Think its indeed the profile that does the trick. or in this case, doesnt.
Next thought. Ok rockplayer will help me out here!.
But i wasnt too impressed with rock on my galaxy s either!.
Loaded rock. but also very crappy. Which is when u think of it, pretty logical.
Why? No hardware support! Rock doesnt even remotely know what a tegra2 soc is. and in fact, NONE of all the video apps do.
So in stead of funky tegra2 hardware decoding, you get software playback.
Ive heard some rumors about nvidia developing an android video player for tegra but i dont know if this is true or not at all.
so unless someone makes a proper video playback app (which in my opinion is way over due already! no offence but theyre all crap if u ask me!) which supports hardware playback AND tegra2 soc, it wont improve very much.

Ok some more info, apperently Tegra2 isnt very great with high profile encoded. baseline and main profiles should work. more testing to do. Also everything below 1080p high profile should kind of play properly. My eyes are on VLC for android and fingers crossed for them to bring tegra2 suppot and their own great codec sets

Check the Motorola Atrix forum, on XDA (sorry cant link from mobile app), they have basically given up on playing hd h264 files on tegra 2. Such a shame.

Yes indeed. It sucks ass. I have the same unit but then from T-Mobile Netherlands. Video included works like a charm (ofcourse) but own added videos look like they are in slowmotion. 720p, 1080p doesn't mattter same issue.
Extra added flaw? When your record video in Full HD it does not play back on Full HD TV's or BD players. I checked why and found that it actually records in 1920x1088p!!!! Yes 1088P people.
FOTA updates are also not working for the T-Mobile branded unit. Comes back with validation error.

Tegra 2 limitation
Some search on the internet revealed that Tegra 2 supports fully h.264 main profile, but for high profile, it is only 720p 6MB/s, which is then not suitable for a BD. Anyway, I don't have the intention to fill in my 32 GB of storage with just one movie...
Recording in 1088p instead of 1080p is a bit more annoying, you think there could be a solution for that?

Yeah MVK-files can be played with other videoplayers on Market but I've read in reviews that it's awfully "laggy". Saw a video where they tried to play mvk in RockPlayer, i think it was, and damn... looked like 1fps!

I tried to play a mkv file yesterday with the build-in player which crashed my phone.
I installed qqplayer and am pretty satisfied with the result.

What kind of mkv did you try? 1080p?

I keep saying its a software issue causing all these troubles, i have a Adam and since the latest update i saw a improvement on the video playback.
Once we get proper support for mkv it will be awsome

I can add that any file that i have MKV to be played has to have the extension changed to AVI and only QQPlayer can run them, if the sound quality is high more than 2 channels the fps rate will be low this happens with either 720p or 1080p. But if i try to run a MP4 file with 1080p it runs very smooth with audio and video sync, so for me its a issue with decoding of MKV.
Oh and the Adam is running froyo no multiprocessor support neither the video apps do.

[Q]Can the D3 stream YouTube 1080p with flash?

Hi guys, can anyone kindly help me test if the droid 3's CPU is capable of streaming yotube videos in 1080p in flash. i am thinking of getting the D4 which shares the same CPU as the D3 except with a higher clock.
i know Samsung's S2's CPU(the exynos, not the tegra 2 version) is capable of handling youtube's 1080p. i would really appreciate your help.
PS: i sympathize with those who purchased the D3.

I'm sure it has the ability to do it, but I've never done it before..

i need someone to do an actual test to confirm. the tegra 2 for instance, despite having 2 cortex a9 cores like the exynos, can't handle 1080p in flash.

Let me check.. but I don't see why you would play a 1080p youtube movie when the screen is only 960x540. 720p would make much more sense (1280x720)
edit: when I go to the desktop page of youtube it says I need to upgrade flash player but I have 11 installed.
Opening in youtube app only lets me choose between HQ and no HQ

perhaps you have not enabled plugin in the setting? maybe you can try another browser? i am aware that 720p is good enough on the phone's screen, but the ability to stream 1080p in flash will proof that the D3's CPU is just as capable as the exynos since the exynos is the only CPU that can handle 1080p in flash afaik. it will also be useful when i output it via HDMI onto my 65" full hd tv since 1080p looks much more clear on a such a big screen. i appreciate your effort anyways.

Its downscaling anything above its 960x540 resolution, but when I tested Flash player it was able to do 720p no problem. When the quality is switched to 1080p the video frame rate drops to nothing but the audio still plays. This is in Dolphin Browser HD with a desktop user agent.

Well flash works fine in mobile version. The desktop version probably looks for desktop flash. Btw just for the record my D3 plays 720p MKVs fine (2GB - 1hour), which probably has a higher bitrate than those youtube 1080p's

yeah i know, my xoom's tegra 2 can handle 8gb 1080p MKVs with no problem, but when it comes to flash 1080p it just stutters like mad. i am not sure why your flash doesn't work in desktop version, maybe you need to change your user agent to desktop. i have no problem with flash on desktop youtube on my phone. mind if i ask what browser did you use? i am currently using dolphin browser MINI with desktop user agent with plugin set to always on.
PS: the android flash is the same as desktop flash, they are just coded for different platforms unlike flash player LITE which is found on Nokia phones. i am very certain that youtube's mobile site does not use flash, it uses the phone's built in player instead to stream the content.

It's not about power but also about optimization.
I use Miren Browser, just set it to desktop user agent and still says I dont have flash. Now when I click on flash it points me to download desktop .dmg version. I doubt this will work?
Also tried default browser but no go

In this case it is about pure raw processing power the tegra 2 is a more optimized than the exynos at the moment due to its mature drivers, API and all that but it still loses to the exynos despite having the same structure as the exynos.
If you look at synthetic benchmarks, you will notice that the exymos is slower than both the omap4430 and the tegra 2, yet in real life, it is the fastest. I have tegra 2 overclocked to 1.6ghz and it still cannot handle 1080p flash. Even though flash claims to be GPU accelerated, it is extremely taxing on the CPU.
Samsung always seems to produce superior chips than its competitors, just take the Hummingbird CPU in the original galaxy s, it is still the fastest single core mobile CPU on the market.
As for your flash problem, have you tried reinstalling flash from the market? You might have to wipe your dalvik cache.

I just tested on my d3 to see.....it worked! I mean at times it wasn't butter smooth and hesitated occasionally but played just fine overall. 720p looks the same on the screen but is butter smooth constantly so yes....the d3..mine at least...can do 1080p youtube. Running cm7...init.d hack. Didn't even use my overclock haha

wow really? can the average fps hit 20(visually) when streaming 1080p? mind if i ask which 1080p video did you stream? personally i find VEVO's 1080p videos to be better quality. i appreciate your feedback

did you install mx player codecs for tegra 2? (you have them on play store as well)

yes i installed MX Player Codec (ARMv7) these are the ones anything else i can't believe that i am the only one who is experiencing this problem

Same problem... Codecs are installed for tegra 2 but video framerate is catastrophic.

you're not the only one... 1080p lags on my phone as well (MX Player too)... but i rarely play anything thats over 720p so i don't mind...

use software decoder in mx player an also install armv7 codec for mx player.

Try to clear memory, hold home button then 'stop all'.

Did you try with standard LG Fotocamera? I never had fullhd problems with froyo/GB/CM7/ICS

Nvidia tegra 2 cannot decode x264 or h264 formats @ 1080P resolution. Try converting the videos to MPEG-4 @ 1080 Resolution.

No one phone on its same 'league/level' had a worse problem this carp, ie SGS2

No problems with fullhd videos, recorded on camera. We are talking about movies downloaded to phone i.e. mkv or mp4 fullhd movies.

Yes, i do encode and decode movies. SO AFAIK, tegra 2 cannot decode h264 codec.

Tegra 2 can decode 1080p coded in low profile. Medium and commonly used high profile are not supported. You can google what choices you can set up to have low profile video. Very good SW for recoding videos is handbrake. I wish you good luck with searching best encode configuration.

i'm using mx player, temasek final build rom and stefan final symbiosis kernel
the video is sluggish to play and the sound is not matching when stark open his mouth for now i didn't using ICS rom or cm10
i also try to play the video in different decoder included on the mx player but it doesn't work

You can run 720p or 1080p fluid.. spawndk from the eepad transformer forum:
"The Tegra2 chipset are designed as a mobile sollution chipset - to support web 2 standards. The highest encoding profile used here (Youtube 1080p) are 1080p baseline and this the Tegra2 chipset will both record and play with no troubles. As well as 720p baseline and main profile - but only upto L3.1 with some limitations. It doesnt matter which container is used (mkv, mp4, m4v, avi etc) and it doesnt matter if resolution are 1080p - its only a matter of the encoding profile used to encode the supported video format H264
Tegra2 will NEVER be able to decode High profile L4.1 encodes - it's not a software issue, neither in terms of Honeycomb or Nvidia libs, its simply a limitation of the abilities of the hardwaredecoder in the Tegra2 chipset and this will never change. It is also not a limitation in the Transformer specifically, but a limitation in ALL Tegra2 based tablets and mobilephones.
This is the same reason why some mediaplayers like the Boxee Box that was originally intended to use the Tegra2 moved on to an Intel chipset before launch.
In short the Tegra2 chipset will support playback of videos encoded in 1080p or 720p resolution, using the H264 video codec and AAC audio codec - as long as the video are encoded after the baseline profile standard
It will not now or ever - play 1080p/720p encodes encoded after the high profile standard."
So basically, you have to reencode videos just like on ipad..

you should reencode to low profile, high profile is for blu-ray device or PC. don't know maybe exynos 5 can play high profile [email protected] with handheld.

Also, you can easily find countless of 720p 10-bit animes if you use google. So, please someone test it for me.

I doubt many of us are familiar with 10 bit video. Try asking the int'l One forum, they already have the phone available.

Yes, it works fine. I didn't see any stuttering, which happened on my Nexus 7.

Okay, I take it back. There are still some frame drops, mainly when panning, but in general it's pretty good.

4K Video player

Hi. I need a video player that can run 4k videos. Is there any? I have the exynos lte one. I know exynos kimits the video recording to 1080p but can it play 4K just like normal 1080p? If yes, any player which can do so? I have checked mx player pro it plays the video but its plays with too much stutter cant see nothing. Any player anyone can tell which can help??

thats the reason why i and millions of other people like Snapdragon chipsets. they at least work great with great battery life and everything optimized. not like samsung. i might sell this crap soon getting only 3 hours of screen on time. and its just box opened brand new tablet. SAMSUNG DISAPPOINTED ME AGAIN, AND ITS THE LAST TIME I GOT SAMMY ****!

Did you try changing it from HW to SW. May help.

As far as I know Exynos doesn't support hardware rendering of 4k video (only 2.5k).

How do you know which is which?

Use an app called CPUZ. It can tel you your device info and chipset.

So I have the Exynos Processor. How many different chipsets are there in the SM-T800? why would they make more than 1 kind under the same model? What are the main differences between them?

We only have 2K screen... 2560x1600... if you download your videos in 2560x1440 they work flawless... 4K video will give you stutter no matter which player you use on this device... I've tried a bunch of them.

I tried playing a few 4k videos on my SM-T800 galaxy tab s 10.5 (exynos) and for every file it stutters.
I've tried MX player - but it defaults to S/W decoding since H/W decoding isn't supported. Even though the format is H/W supported (H264), it just doesn't allow H/W decoding at these resolutions.
BS Player defaults to S/W too, as it shows 'S/W' when it displays the player properties.
Is there no current solution? Do we just sit and wait for H/W support to be enabled in the near future - or is it just too hardware intensive on the Exynos that no one will bother.

Can somebody explain why you are playing 4k video`s on a 2k+ tablet, is it just to see if they play correctly, are they just clips, a full 4k movie must be a big file.
I use the free handbrake software on my notebook, to convert and movies or series mostly animi to nHD which is 640x360 if i am going to keep them on my tablet, the higher the video resolution the more power the tablet needs to use to display them, so not only are 4k video are huge, they use a lot of battery life to play.

It's just to see if the device can actually play 4k, and to see if hardware encoding even makes a difference.
Given that 4k will be more prevalent in the future, it's just testing to see if it will be able to handle the larger bitrates/files.
Most of my 4k clips are only about 2-4 minutes in length.

I wish my 10.5" could play in hardware the new h.265 format, as the video files can be up to half the size of the current h.264 version for the same quality, but it cannot, so it will have to be played back in software mode, oh well you cannot have everything, maybe it will take a while for H.265 to catch on.
